Lady Gaga Joins Bruce Springsteen, Elton John At Sting’s Rainforest Benefit

Gaga performed duets of ‘Speechless’ and ‘Your Song’ with John at New York show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen perform in New York on Thursday Photo: Kevin Kane/ Getty Images In the past year Lady Gaga has risen from little-known dance act to one of today’s major international superstars. But how do you know you’ve really arrived? It’s when you get invited to perform at Sting’s annual Rainforest Fund benefit show. On Thursday night (May 13) Gaga was on-hand for the star-studded show at New York’s Carnegie Hall, which also featured performances by Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, host Sting, Mary J. Blige and Blondie’s Debbie Harry. Wearing a frumpy gray old-lady wig, a white mini-hoop skirt and matching leggings that looked like they were made out of Ace bandages, Gaga sat down at the piano for what the New York Daily News described as a “sober version of one of the most earnest pop songs of all time,” Ben E. King’s timeless “Stand by Me.” She also hooked up with pop icon John again for a run through her song “Speechless,” which segued into his hit “Your Song” in what the paper described as a seamless collaboration between two stars who seemed “made for each other.” The 21st annual show opened with Sting singing “Englishman in New York.” He later hooked up with Mary J. for their duet, “Whenever I Say Your Name.” Springsteen belted out Bryan Adams’ “Cuts Like a Knife” and “Dancing in the Dark.” Though he played such classics as “Philadelphia Freedom,” John also got in on the cover action, taking on the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and “Material Girl,” accompanied by a kick line of male go-go dancers wearing Speedos. Harry performed the Blondie classic “The Tide Is High,” while Dame Shirley Bassey busted out two of her iconic James Bond themes, “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever,” as well as her hit “Big Spender.” Chic leader Nile Rodgers served up “Le Freak” and Sting returned later in the show for a cover of the Fine Young Cannibals’ 1989 hit “She Drives Me Crazy.” The whole gang ended the night by taking on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Related Artists Lady Gaga Elton John Bruce Springsteen

More Christina Aguilera GQ Magazine Pictures

Here are some more pictures of Christina Aguilera from her nude picture spread for German GQ . I use the term nude loosely because we don’t get to see any of the naughty bits. How do the Germans always convince these chicks to pose naked? They’re a sneaky bunch those Germans. Anyhow, I get that she’s trying to reference Madonna in these pictures, but enough already, show us the real Xtina. And by that I mean her lady parts. Enjoy.

M.I.A. Says Justin Bieber’s Videos Are ‘More Offensive’ Than Her ‘Born Free’

‘I find the new Justin Bieber video more violent and more of an assault to my eyes …,’ M.I.A. told a British magazine. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images In the past month, M.I.A. has taken shots at Lady Gaga and, uh, the U.S. government . And now, she’s moved on to the next logical target: Justin Bieber. In the current issue of British music magazine NME , M.I.A. was asked about the meaning behind the controversial clip she made for her song “Born Free.” And rather than reveal her motivations, she seized the opportunity to rip the pint-size prince of pop, saying that the Bieb’s videos are “more offensive” than anything she’s ever done. “I find the new Justin Bieber video more violent and more of an assault to my eyes and senses than what I’ve made,” she joked to the mag. Perhaps not wanting to further draw the ire of Bieber Nation — which, truth be told, might be more powerful than the U.S. government at this point — she then changed the subject, saying that most people’s reactions to the “Born Free” video actually mystifies her … though, to be honest, she’s not exactly spending a lot of time thinking about it. “It baffles me that everyone seems to be obsessed with deciphering the meaning to it,” she said. “It baffles me in the same way as the Brick Lane riot for American Apparel leggings baffled me. We don’t know what the process is for this one is yet. I haven’t thought about it yet and I don’t want to have to.” In April, M.I.A. rankled another fervent fanbase — Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters — when she accused the pop star of stealing her looks from Grace Jones and Madonna and called her “a good mimic.” Related Artists M.I.A. Glee Creator Urges: Boycott Newsweek!

In last week’s edition of Newsweek , Ramin Setoodeh wrote an article that made one controversial statement and asked one controversial question: First, he said, gay actors cannot pull of straight roles. Then, he asked: Why is there no A-list gay movie star? Kristin Chenoweth fired back at the essay, citing Setoodeh’s examples of failed straight roles (e.g. Cynthia Nixon as Miranda in Sex and the City ) as “sloppy,” and referring to the entire piece as “bigoted and factually inaccurate.” Now, Glee creator Ryan Murphy has taken his critique of the article even further: he’s written an open letter, asking everyone to boycott Newsweek. In it, he says: This article is as misguided as it is shocking and hurtful. It shocks me because Mr. Setoodeh is himself gay. But what is the most shocking of all is that Newsweek went ahead and published such a blatantly homophobic article in the first place…and has remained silent in the face of ongoing (and justified) criticism. Would the magazine have published an article where the author makes a thesis statement that minority actors should only be allowed and encouraged to play domestics? I think not. Today, I have asked GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios to stand with me and others and ask for an immediate boycott of Newsweek magazine until an apology is issued to Sean Hayes and other brave out actors who were cruelly singled out in this damaging, needlessly cruel, and mind-blowingly bigoted piece. An apology should also be issued to all gay readers of the magazine…steelworkers, parents, accountants, doctors, etc…proud hardworking Americans who, if this article is to be believed, should only identify themselves as “queeny” people (a word used by Setoodeh in the article) who stand at the back of the bus and embrace an outdated decades old stereotype. Give me a call, Ramin… I’d love to hear from you. I’ll even give you a free copy of our Madonna CD, on which we cover “Open Your Heart,” a song you should play in your house and car on repeat. Our take on Setoodeh’s viewpoint? Putting aside homophobic rhetoric and anythong of that nature, it’s simply incorrect. Off the top of our heads, we can come up with numerous gay actors that are widely accepted in straight roles (Nixon, Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother, Cherry Jones on 24 , Lily Tomlin on Damages ). It’s difficult to make a serious point of any kind when your thesis is misguided. What do you think about gay actors in straight roles? Do you have any problem taking them seriously?

Dancing with the Stars Bruno Tonioli Heart Attack Meter: Waltz Week

Waltzes and quicksteps! So… horribly dorky. Luckily, Dancing with the Stars countered the schmaltz by sticking Lady Gaga karaoke and disco-stick rides at the end of the show. And of course, Bruno Tonioli almost suffered massive heart attacks after every performance. Time to revisit the six couples’ routines, two cha-cha medleys (set to the music of Lady Gaga and Madonna), and our interpretations of Bruno’s mad-horny comments. We also included our own opinions in case you’re desperately seeking sanity.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 10’s First Perfect Score Goes To Evan Lysacek

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba calls Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya’s tango ‘so sexy, so refined.’ By Kelley L. Carter Anna Trebunskaya and Evan Lysacek on “Dancing with the Stars” Monday Photo: ABC After feeling like he let partner Anna Trebunskaya down in their samba last week, Olympian Evan Lysacek made it up to her and then some on Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” The couple earned the first perfect score of season 10 with their Argentine tango. “Evan Lysacek has the eye of the tiger!” Carrie Ann Inaba exclaimed before the judges awarded them with 30 points. “It was so sexy, so refined. Just the perfect combination of power and control.” Up first was ESPN reporter Erin Andrews and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who did a quickstep that the judges raved over. Last week, Chmerkovskiy was criticized for taking his clothes off, so they had a bit of fun with it and had him ripping off his pants and her skirt to reveal another dancing costume. “Erin, without doubt, your best dance. I loved your performance. Well done,” Len Goodman said. Score: 27 out of 30. The second pair to dance was Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke, who did the Viennese waltz. “The pressure is on when you gotta be perfect,” the football player groaned during a rehearsal. The judges were impressed, saying that this was the night Chad became a contender. “Chad, I can’t believe you can be so graceful and so gentle; truly a gentle giant,” Bruno Tonioli said. Score: 25. Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough said they wanted to do a pure waltz, with no hodgepodge. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called the pop singer by far the best dancer they have ever had on the show. “You’re so good that you dance almost as Derek’s equal. You still were side-by-side, next to each other. The connection was lacking, but the movements were gorgeous,” Inaba said. Score: 27. Pamela Anderson said she wanted to refine her technique, and her partner Damian Whitewood was determined to make it happen. Goodman called her waltz understated, and said that Anderson needs to “firm up” her upper body. “It’s a very tough dance,” Goodman added. Tonioli said she always gets the character right, but she “had to check the top line, which is very hard to hold constantly in these … dances.” Score: 24. Niecy Nash and Louis van Amstel did a quickstep, but before they performed, had a rather funny exchange in their rehearsal footage. “We’re like a couple who got divorced and still have to tolerate each other for the sake of the kids,” Nash joked. That oddball chemistry appeared to work for the judges. “Niecy, you never looked more gorgeous,” Tonioli said. “Your footwork was better than ever; your best dance to date.” Score: 25. In addition to the individual routines, the celebrities had to set aside their rivalries to do a group cha-cha, in a Madonna vs. Lady Gaga challenge. Team Gaga (Anderson and Whitewood, Scherzinger and Hough, and Burke and Ochocinco) beat Team Madonna (Nash and Van Amstel, Lysacek and Trebunskaya, and Andrews and Chmerkovskiy), earning 27 points to Madonna’s 24. Which couple do you think was the best on last night’s “Dancing With the Stars”? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Photos The 2010 Cast Of ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Perez Hilton As A Clerk? Hear About It On ‘When I Was 17’!

New MTV show premieres Saturday at 11 a.m.! By Eric Ditzian Photo: MTV News How does one train to become the face behind one of the most popular celebrity gossip sites on the Web? Where does one go to pick up the skills necessary to score scoops, start feuds and become a celeb in ones own right? Apparently, one heads straight to … the department store? That’s what Perez Hilton did in his teenage years, as he reveals in this Saturday’s premiere of MTV’s new show, “When I Was 17.” “All throughout high school, I always had summer jobs,” he explains. “So when I was 17, I got this job working at a department store. It was called Byrons, and I was a clerk. It was my job to separate the hangers.” How hard could that be? Well, try doing it all day, every day, for an entire summer. That is dedication. “At department stores, they must have 10 different types of hangers,” he says. “They have kid hangers, adult hangers, lingerie hangers, transparent hangers, solid hangers. I would just be there separating hangers for hours and hours and hours.” OK, so maybe that’s not where Hilton picked up his nose for fresh gossip. But now that he has become a celebrity himself, he follows the example of just one person. “Madonna is my ultimate icon,” he says. “Some people ask themselves, ‘What would Jesus do?’ I say, ‘F— that! What would Madonna do?’ ” That’s the sort of insight into today’s celebs that you’ll get on “When I Was 17.” The premiere episode — featuring Trey Songz , Khloe Kardashian and Hilton — airs Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. on MTV.
