Ellen DeGeneres Signs Internet Sensation Greyson Chance To New Label

Twelve-year-old who covered Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ helps launch Ellen’s eleveneleven. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. No one’s life is moving faster than that of 12-year-old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance , who has gone from an unknown middle-schooler to a worldwide sensation in just a few weeks thanks to his masterful viral cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” On Wednesday (May 26), “American Idol” judge and talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she’s launching a new record label, eleveneleven, and her first signing will be Chance. According to an announcement from her spokesperson, the musical prodigy from Edmond, Oklahoma will join Ellen on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where just a few weeks ago he got props from Gaga herself for his emotional solo piano cover of her hit single. Like his 20 million other fans, DeGeneres spotted Chance on YouTube performing the song at a sixth grade music festival (back when it only had 10,000 views) and then invited him to reprise the performance on her May 13 show, when he got a special call from Gaga. “Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven. He is my first artist and we are making a record together,” said DeGeneres in the announcement. Chance will perform one of his original songs, “Broken Hearts,” on Wednesday’s show. The preteen has already secured one of the most high-profile management teams in the music business in Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, and Troy Carter, Gaga’s handler, who have agreed to co-manage the sixth grader. DeGeneres, an avowed music (and dance) fan who started her first year on the “Idol” panel amid questions about her musical expertise, said she will continue to use her daytime talker as a platform to discover new artists for the label. The move comes at a pivotal time, as Wednesday night’s “Idol” finale marks the final appearance by original panelist and lead judge Simon Cowell, whose long tenure as a music executive and label runner will leave the judges’ table lacking someone with that experience. On Wednesday’s show, both Chance and DeGeneres will talk about how quickly the record deal and signing have come about. “I’m so excited to have you back,” the host said in the pretaped interview, according to a transcript released as part of the announcement. “This is moving so fast. When I first met you, I said things are going to change. Now [the hits] are over 30 million views. How are you feeling about it all?” Chance responds, “It’s crazy thinking about 30 million people. It just makes me happy. It really just hasn’t sunken in yet.

Kris Allen Recalls Dumping His Now-Wife On ‘When I Was 17’

‘She was awesome, but I was a jerk,’ he says on the show, which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. By Eric Ditzian Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Listen up, all you heartbroken souls! Just because you broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t mean you won’t someday get back together. And get married. And see your spouse go on to win “American Idol.” That’s the takeaway from Kris Allen’s romance with his high school sweetheart, as the singer explains in the upcoming episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. “When I was 17, I broke up with my future wife,” he admitted. Arkansas native Allen and future wife Katie had been dating for about a year when their final year of high school rolled around and Kris decided he needed space to rock out like a true senior. “She was awesome, but I was a jerk. I was like, ‘Aw, it’s my senior year. I’ve got to be free like a bird. Can’t have this ball and chain on me,’ ” he explained. He probably should’ve realized it before, but Allen was not exactly the type of guy who could move on from one girl and embrace countless others. “I had no game with the ladies, but with her, it was really easy to go up and talk to her, and everything just always clicked,” he said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to end up together forever.’ ” Nonetheless, they split, first for a two-week break and then for what both thought would be a permanent separation. “She had a hard time dealing with it,” Allen said. “Actually, our lockers were right next to each other, so that was pretty tough.” But eventually they got back together and ended up getting hitched shortly before Allen debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol,” which he went on to win. But the guy still feels bad about how he treated his sweetheart back in the day. “I was more worried about my senior year and having fun than being a boyfriend,” he said. “I’m sorry, Katie. I was being a jerk!” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Allen, Kourtney Kardashian and Travie McCoy — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’: The Summer Jam Of 2010?

Song came out last fall, but video is on the way — and who would bet against Gaga? By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Interscope Records Sure, it’s from an album that came out last year, but that doesn’t mean you should bet against Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” in the Summer Jam Sweepstakes . After all, there are about a million compelling reasons why it could very well be the biggest song on the beaches, chief among them this one: At this point, why bet against her? Yes, in her meteoric rise to the top of the pop world, there’s not much Gaga hasn’t accomplished, though a surefire summertime smash may be one of them. “Paparazzi” started picking up steam in the summer of 2009, but due mostly to scheduling, LG has yet to release a single during tanning season. Until now, that is. Because “Alejandro” is primed and ready as the third single from her massive Fame Monster album, and thanks to a high-profile (and slightly controversial) performance of the tune on “American Idol” and sure-to-be discussed video in the works (it’s due next month), it wouldn’t surprise us to see Gaga topping the charts this summer, which, by proxy, would all but cement the song as the official soundtrack to the bikini months. There’s plenty to love about the song, too: From the sparkling, slightly Spanish production work of frequent collaborator RedOne to the goofy accent Gaga adopts for the tune, it’s very much an over-the-top delight, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out just how much it reminds us of Madonna’s easy, breezy “La Isla Bonita,” which was a hit way back in the summer of ’87. And let’s face it: If there’s one song that will serve as the score to your summer-long fling with a dreamy-yet-slightly-distant exchange student (“I know that we are young, and I know that you may love me/ But I just can’t be with you like this anymore, Alejandro “), well, this is probably it. So while it faces some stiff competition — from the likes of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and the B.o.B/ Hayley Williams team-up “Airplanes” to name just two — “Alejandro” feels like a strong contender to become the song of summer 2010. And if/when it does, it’ll only further illustrate the fact that Lady Gaga can basically do anything. Like we said, why would you bet against her? Vote for the summer jam of 2010 in the MTV Newsroom now, and stay tuned all week for more on the hottest songs of the season. Related Videos Who Will Have The Song Of The Summer?

‘Glee’ Gets Picked Up For Third Season

The hit Fox series gets big vote of confidence before the end of season one. By Jocelyn Vena Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Chris Colfer on “Glee” Photo: FOX As the first season of “Glee” nears its June 8 season finale, Gleeks will be happy to hear that the show will be around for at least another two seasons. On Monday (May 24), it was announced that Fox has picked up the show for a third season. Variety reports that the show will be back for more musical filled laughs and drama for the next two years. “Glee” was the highest-rated show of the new season, following a special launch after the “American Idol” finale last May. In the year it’s been on the air, it has garnered critical acclaim and a rabid fanbase. Ratings continued to thrive in the second half of the season, when the show has aired in the plum post-“Idol” spot. Guest stars have included everyone from Neil Patrick Harris and Olivia Newton-John to Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, and the show has paid homage to Madonna and, in this week’s episode, Lady Gaga . “I never thought the show would even last,” show creator Ryan Murphy recently said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly . “I just didn’t think people would get it. It truly is a show that the fans think is theirs, that they discovered it.” Murphy remains wary of backlash in the face of his show’s success. “I told [the kids] at the beginning, ‘When you burn hot, there will always be a moment when they turn on you, and then they’ll come back around. You just have to learn how to navigate it,’ ” he told the magazine. “Now you can feel we’ve gone from sort of America’s squeaky-clean sweetheart to ‘Lea Michele snubs photographer!’ Like, really?” What do you hope to see in the season finale of “Glee” next month? ‘American Idol’ Top Three: What Should They Sing?

The judges’ picks for the finalists have been revealed, but we have a few suggestions for their choices. By Eric Ditzian “American Idol” top 3 Photo: FOX Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze and Casey James are back in Los Angeles after jetting off to their hometowns last week. Come Tuesday night (May 18), though, it will be time to shut out those memories of parades and concerts and instead concentrate on the task at hand: convincing America they deserve the chance to transition from famous names to successful recording artists. It’s a task for which the “Idol” top three and the judges will be sharing responsibility, as each crooner is set to perform two tunes: one selected by the judges and one picked by the contestants themselves. We already know what Simon Cowell and his pals have decided on; what we don’t know is what the contestants, freed from any theme-week requirements, have lined up. Here’s what we’d like to hear from the finalists. Crystal Bowersox The first thing MamaSox should do is thank Ellen DeGeneres for choosing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” a tune that could be all sorts of awesome when shot through with a bit of Crystal’s bluesy soul. We have visions of a performance akin to what we heard earlier this season during “Long as I Can See the Light” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” So what should Bowersox choose for herself? After covering McCartney’s classic-rock territory, we encourage the singer to go gonzo and pick something contemporary to show she’s not just an oldies singer. A stripped-down, acoustic-guitar-driven take on Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” would simply be amazing. Another killer choice would be Madonna’s “Music,” taken in a funky, country-fied direction. Lee DeWyze The 24-year-old singer’s sweet spot all season has been slow tunes that allow him to concentrate on nailing (or attempting to nail) his vocals. When it really works — as during “The Boxer” — we begin to see why DeWyze has made it this far in the season-nine competition. Leave it to Cowell to understand Lee’s strengths and weaknesses, as the Brit judge has picked “Hallelujah” for the singer. The Leonard Cohen song has been covered countless times and with diverse arrangements — including Jason Castro’s take on Jeff Buckley’s version in season seven and Tim Urban’s version earlier this season. That arrangement seems like the best fit for DeWyze. For his second song, DeWyze might be thinking that he should delve into a hard-charging rock song. That’d be a mistake. The original version of his melodious new single, “Princess (Reprise),” however, gives us hint of another style that works well for him. The original song reminds us a lot of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” And that’s exactly what we want to hear from DeWyze on Tuesday. Casey James The most predictable and least interesting of the judges’ picks comes by way of Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson, who selected “Daughters” for Casey. Among the many problems with this tune, we fear, is that James will be accused of doing very little by way of rearrangement. And when it comes to a straight-up comparison between James and John Mayer, the “Idol” contestant is not going to come off on the winning end. Thus, the 27-year-old singer is faced with the biggest challenge on Tuesday. His best bet is to return to terrain he plumped so successfully with John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy.” James essentially turned that song into a Bob Seger tune, and it worked. This time around, he should just go all the way and bust out Seger’s “Night Moves.” What do you think the contestants should sing? Share your suggestions in the comments! Kevin McHale on Glee’s Wheelchair Controversy, His Dream TV Role and Celebrity Gleeks

Although Glee ‘s ensemble cast sometimes prevents characters from getting their fair share of Ryan Murphy’s spotlight, every now and then an episode airs that manages to tenderly chronicle the plight of one glee club member. In tonight’s episode, “Dream On,” Artie — the white-rapping, wheelchair-bound character played by Kevin McHale — supports one of the most emotionally gratifying storylines of the season. In anticipation of tonight’s episode, which was directed by Joss Whedon and guest stars Neil Patrick Harris, McHale phoned Movieline to discuss his questionable guitar skills, his boy band days and the one fan anecdote that made him appreciate Glee even more than he already did.

Madonna’s Husband Guy Ritchie Thinks Sugar Is More Dangerous Than Cocaine

Madonna’s husband Guy Ritchie says sugar is more dangerous than cocaine. Guy — who found fame with his 1998 movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels — believes the sweet substance kills more people than the celebrity drug. He says, “Sugar kills. Think of the calories in sugar. Fat kills more people than anything else. Sugar is responsible for a lot of deaths, arguably more than crack cocaine” Guy, 39, also gave his opinion on British rocker Pete Doherty’s drug habit, telling Empire magazine, “It’s either genius marketing or a happy — or unhappy — accident. It’s creative self-destruction in the sense that he’s doing it creatively.” Guy recently dismissed claims he and Madonna are headed for divorce. At a screening for his new movie RocknRolla last week, he said, “My marriage is fine as far as I’m aware of.”
