Semi Precious Weapons: ‘We Owe Our Lives To Lady Gaga’

‘We’ve been playing shows with Gaga since 2006,’ frontman Justin Tranter says. By Matt Harper Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter in the music video for “Semi Precious Weapons” Photo: Razor & Tie Music Lady Gaga may be busy prepping the release of her eagerly anticipated new video “Telephone,” but it seems she still has time to help out a band of fellow New Yorkers — the fashionista superstar has been quietly working to introduce the world to Semi Precious Weapons. However, these dirty rockers are not new to the game — Semi Precious Weapons have been a staple of the New York party scene for a few years now, bringing their unique formula of rock music, high fashion and “good old-fashioned filth.” Now the guys find themselves playing to different sort of crowd. “The last four months for us have been insane,” lead singer Justin Tranter told MTV News recently. “We’ve gone from a band that plays in bars, driving ourselves to every show, selling our own merch … to opening for [Lady Gaga] all over the world.” It doesn’t stop at opening for Lady Gaga — the current first lady of pop also helped the boys get signed to a major label and is providing an assist on their upcoming album as an executive producer. So why all the goodwill from Gaga? Well, not too long ago the roles were reversed. “We’ve been playing shows with Gaga since 2006,” Justin recalled. “Her first couple of shows as Lady Gaga in NYC were opening for us .” Although the tables have now clearly turned, the boys from Semi Precious Weapons couldn’t be more appreciative of the opportunity that they’ve been given. “We pretty much owe our lives to Lady Gaga!” But just because SPW are opening for Gaga and now have a major label deal, don’t expect their raw rock sound to be tempered — they promise to keep their edge plenty sharp. “People don’t really know what rock and roll is anymore,” the band stated plainly. “You can’t call it rock and roll unless it’s dangerous, unless it’s offensive.”

Gorillaz Plastic Beach Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Here’s a little of what you can expect from the latest offering from Damon Albarn and crew. By James Montgomery Gorillaz Photo: EMI Music / Jamie Hewlett Much like Lazarus, Superman and, uh, Sayid from “Lost,” Gorillaz are back from the dead with their first new album in nearly five years, a post-apocalyptic parable called Plastic Beach. Of course, not everyone in the band bit the bullet at the end of the promotional cycle for their last album, 2005’s massive Demon Days — just guitarist Noodle, who perished at the conclusion of the band’s “El Ma

‘American Idol’ Top 10 Women: What They Need To Do

We have some advice for Katelyn Epperly, Didi Benami and the rest of the ladies. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” top ten females Photo: FOX By many accounts, it was a rough first week for the top 24 on “American Idol” last week. And while the guys had it a bit tougher than the girls when it came to harsh comments from the judges, it’s not like the ladies got off scot-free. From multiple slags about wrong song choices to the usual litany of complaints about young singers acting too old and pitchy performances, Simon, Ellen, Kara and Randy gave the dozen female contenders plenty to think about. The remaining 10 women got a rare one-day reprieve on Tuesday when leading contender Crystal Bowersox fell ill and caused a one-time-only switcheroo , forcing the boys to perform a day earlier than scheduled. At press time, there was no update on Bowersox’s condition. So what do the girls have to do Wednesday night (March 3) to make sure they’re not in the bottom two come Thursday? Lilly Scott Last week’s breakout performer moved near the front of the line with a quirky acoustic-guitar-driven take on the Beatles’ “Fixing a Hole,” which drew praise from the judges. As long as the 20-year-old platinum blonde keeps mixing it up and surprising the panel — but not too much — she should keep skating along. Michelle Delamor The little-known singer took a chance tackling Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’,” throwing in some bluesy runs that made for a solid live debut. Ellen loved it, and Simon said it was solid, if predictable. Delamor needs to explain to America why they should care and stretch outside her comfort zone to keep the dream alive. Crystal Bowersox The early front-runner among the ladies stumbled a bit last week, landing accusations from Simon that her strummy, harmonica-assisted cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket” was a bit too similar to the work of countless subway buskers. Then she fell ill on Monday and forced the postponement of ladies night. Will she pull a Megan Joy and rebound from sickness stronger than ever? She can’t bust out an original, but Bowersox might want to consider showing off something other than her folky credentials to remind the judges why they chose her to begin with. Paige Miles Another virtual stranger to viewers did pretty well in her live debut, kicking off the show with a growling take on Free’s classic-rock staple “All Right Now.” Cowell praised her for having the best voice of all the girls but said her song choice was hacky and cheap. The preschool teacher does indeed have a strong voice, and she, too, needs to use the new “personality snapshot” section unveiled on Tuesday night to give us some clue as to why she should get our vote. Maybe she juggles flaming knives or helped raise a baby seal as a child or speaks Esperanto. Mostly, though, she should really focus on picking the right song to prove it this week. Siobhan Magnus Magnus, 19, went a bit dark with her brooding take on Chris Isaak’s hard-to-sing “Wicked Game,” and Cowell lamented that the glassblowing apprentice didn’t live up to her previous fire. Kara liked the oddball song choice, and Ellen said she was so blown away that she forgot she was watching a reality show for a moment. We didn’t, so for Magnus to keep her spot, she should keep driving the oddball lane even harder and focus on showing the judges some hidden commercial appeal. Katie Stevens The high-schooler nearly blew it with her old-fashioned-sounding Michael Bubl

Britney Spears, Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen Are Billboard Top Money Makers

Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Pink and Kings of Leon also make the top 40 list for 2009. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage Billboard magazine’s fourth-annual Top 40 Money Makers list is topped by U2 this year. The Irish superstars raked in more than $108 million in 2009, mostly through their gigantic 360-degree tour — the most expensive rock production to ever hit the road — which is also destined to be the highest-grossing tour of all time. In addition to being topped by the big three from the ’80s — U2, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen — the list also features a number of younger acts banking major cash, among them Miley Cyrus , the Jonas Brothers , Kings of Leon and Taylor Swift . Among the variables figured into the list were money earned from CD and digital sales, publishing royalties and all forms of streaming media, as well as touring from the first week of 2009 through January 3, 2010. The top three included Madonna, who piled up $47.2 million from her Sticky and Sweet stadium/arena tour, licensing and merchandise as well as a lucrative 360 deal with Live Nation. Veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen took the #2 spot with $57.6 million through a combination of touring, more than 2 million digital downloads and hefty publishing revenues thanks to the fact that he writes all his own songs. Britney Spears proved that touring is a girl’s best friend by surging in at #5 ($38.8 million), raking in more than $36.4 million for her worldwide arena tour in support of 2008’s Circus album, as well as money from more than 7.5 million downloads. The road was very, very kind to Pink as well, earning her the #6 spot ($36.3 million), with all but $1 million of that rolling in courtesy of her acrobatic Funhouse world tour. The Jonas Brothers did all right for themselves, landing at #7 on proceeds of $33.5 million, $31.4 million of which came from their world tour in support of Lives, Vines and Trying Times. Miley Cyrus hit #15 with $21.2 million, with more than $4.3 million from CD royalties and $15 million from her “Wonder World” tour, while Beyonc

Jayde Nicole In Her Slutty Eighties Outfit

I don’t know why I keep posting pictures of Playboy playmate Jayde Nicole . Actually that’s not true, I know exactly why I post pictures of her, because she’s got nice set of big boobs and she tends to dress in outfit’s you’d commonly associate with sluts from the eighties. The other day she was out in an old school Madonna inspired slutty lingerie combo and now she’s in some strategically torn leggings on her way to some douche club… Take me with you princess.

Madonna’s Photo Shoot

Madonna is ready for her close up. We caught the Queen of Pop on her way to a photo shoot in New York City looking dandy as ever, and she even offered up a smile. Maybe she was happy to see us. Then again, maybe she was just practicing for the shoot.

Anatomy of an Oscar luncheon

The Academy held its traditional luncheon for this year’s Oscar nominees at the Beverly Hilton – and what better opportunity for this sometime-actress to ask the world’s best actors about… acting. Unlike Brett’s experience at the Oscar Nominations ceremony, it was pretty easy for me to snag a third row seat between a Japanese reporter and a freelancer for BET. Yes! At my very first Oscar luncheon press conference, I, Ellen Fox, was going to geek out and gather the pearls of wisdom from what I saw as an impromptu Master Class – and for that, Woody Harrelson, I do apologize. First up was Gabourey Sidibe, who immediately loosened thing up by sassing: After sharing that her role as a sexually-abused teen in Precious has inspired many people to confide in her, she was asked which of her scenes from the film she’d like shown at the Oscars: Ah! Proof that Sidibe’s knack for humor is what saved Precious from becoming the downer we were expecting it to be. Then we swung from Sidibe's charm to the arrival of Certified Movie Star, Sandra Bullock. In person, she comes across way more savvy and Type-A (like her character in The Proposal) than America’s Sweetheart. I was surprised how candid she was talking about the business end of show biz: Lee Daniels, director of Precious, was a love: emotional when fielding Frenchy questions about the power of art and ebullient when lauding the “bad-ass” actresses who brought the film’s classroom scenes to life: Vera Farmiga looked the frickin’ Hollywood knockout in a blue dress, updo and red lipstick! There's talk of Madonna directing her in the role of Wallis Simpson. Here’s how she responded to my question about playing Up in the Air’s frequently frisky flyer, Alex: Carey Mulligan popped in with a golden pixie cut a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby. She seemed relaxed but kept herself in check: Jeff Bridges strolled in and the room, and probably the world, smiled. When I asked how he was able to make Crazy Heart’s country singer Bad Blake so toxic but so likeable, the word “adorable” just popped out, I swear! Now, here’s what happened to Woody Harrelson when I decided to ask him about craft. Now who wants Burrito? (Image) added by: Ellen_Fox

Madonna’s New Clothing Line

Madonna is reportedly in talks to design a clothing line for Macy’s. The 51-year-old singer, who has already created a range for H&M, is looking to do a contemporary women’s collection, which would include apparel, accessories, intimates and footwear. Madge recently became the face of Dolce & Gabbana’s spring ad campaign and has also modelled for Louis Vuitton, Gap and Versace. When ya got it, ya got it!
