Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, a hugely popular Spanish radio personality, has been accused of sexual harassment last week by a performer on his nationally syndicated program. His show has been yanked by Univision as a result. Alberto “Beto” Cortez, a writer, producer and performer on the popular “Piolin por la Manana” radio program, made the claims against his boss Sotelo. According to Cortez (via the L.A. Times ), Sotelo was “physically, sexually and emotionally harassing” him for a three-year period ending last January. Beto does not appear to have has filed a lawsuit at this point, but has made several surprising allegations in a letter to the bosses at Univision. In the letter, Beto specifically claims Piolin would grab his rear end and genitals when he would arrive to the Glendale, Calif., office in the mornings. Beto also claims Piolin would berate him with gay slurs, even though Beto is straight and has a girlfriend, and says witnesses will corroborate this. As for Piolin, the radio star adamantly denies the claims , and said through his lawyer that Beto concocted the story in an attempt at a shakedown. Piolin Sexual Harassment Scandal “A disgruntled, troubled employee has made malicious, false claims about Eddie Sotelo,” the statement reads. “This was done as part of a demand for money.” “The employee worked with Eddie for more than a decade. The employee’s allegations of harassment … are pure fiction intended to gain a financial settlement.” Piolin’s was regarded by many as the Howard Stern of Spanish radio – he’s been on 10 years and is that popular – before his show was pulled. Univision issued a statement saying, “Sotelo and Univision have agreed to part company.” “It’s been a great run with Univision,” Piolin said in the statement.
