Nas Serves Christmas Dinner To Families Affected By HIV/AIDS

‘The community is in me so giving back is important,’ MC says of helping out during the holidays. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nas Photo: MTV News Nas is in the giving spirit for the holidays. The renowned Queens lyricist headed to Harlem on Wednesday (December 22) to serve Christmas dinner to families affected by HIV/AIDS as part of an event run by music industry professional turned activist Maria Davis. And the Illmatic MC was more than willing to lend a hand, and his celebrity, to help the cause. “This event is Maria Davis’ thing. She’s HIV-positive, a part of the community of Harlem, so she does her thing for [the] holiday season for the people who are infected by AIDS or affected by AIDS,” he explained to MTV News. “I came through [on the] strength of her friend Melba, who owns Melba’s Restaurant — great soul food on 114th street here in Harlem. She called me [and] I came through just for the support.” Esco maintained that despite his status as an influential hip-hop lyricist and hitmaker, showing support to those who are less fortunate continues to remain a top priority. “For me, it’s like I can’t get away from the community. The community is in me so giving back is important,” he said. Nas also added that helping others doesn’t have to include logging hours at charity events, but said people can inspire by being successful game-changers in their own right. “I think when you give back, you just do your thing. You come from a neighborhood like I came from and you just do your thing, that’s all you gotta do [to inspire],” he said. ” ‘Cause every kid that sees you doing your thing, you can’t even imagine what you’re doing for that kid or that grown up. They see you doing your thing, that’s inspiration. There’s kids that went to school with me who are grown men now. There’s dudes that’s been listening to my music for a long time and the more they see me continue, that’s enough. That’s all they need to say ‘Yo, I could do it.’ ” The Distant Relatives MC admitted that he has plenty to learn when it comes to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and noted that social stigma surrounding the disease has often stymied the public’s informed awareness of the issue. “The thing about AIDS is you start to raise your eyebrow at how it affects certain communities. [The] homosexual community [and] African-American community was really the first [to report cases of HIV infection], right, so, kinda, those two communities got blamed for it — even almost like they invented it. That’s not the truth. So it’s affected everybody now, every community. It makes you want to learn about it,” he said. “When Eazy-E caught it … and my man Magic Johnson, it touched us. But then we waiting, like, to see what’s next [and] that’s not cool. So my whole thing is to learn more about it.” What do you think about Nas’ comments about HIV/AIDS? Let us know in the comments! NBA Finals Game 7 Live Blog: Rajon Rondo Leads Celtics To 11-Point Lead

-Four quick halftime thoughts: it was nice of Magic Johnson to finally admit he couldn’t make sense of a basketball game; it was fitting that everyone used the wrestling analogy for their analysis; we need more stories from Bill Walton in the future, even if the events he describes are kind of boring; and this Kobe legacy talk is boring, as expected. On the bright side, it was nice of Jon Barry to say the legacy won’t change if Kobe wins “4, 5, or 7 championships” instead of “4, 6 or 8 championships” like he did in the pregame. -It’s a good thing the jerseys on the front say “Lakers” and “Celtics.” If they instead said “Spurs” and “Nets,” there would be more complaining. Or, more accurately,

The Only Thing Crazier Than Mike Tyson? Mike Tyson And Tupac

You know how there are moments in life that are so incredible, they defy our understanding at the time? From MTV News , Mike Tyson describes his first meeting with Tupac Shakur: “Magic Johnson had a party at the Palladium in Los Angeles. … I came outside. I was talking to the people running the door. They were friends of mine. They wouldn’t let these guys in, Tupac and them. I said, ‘Man, let these guys in. You remember how it was with us.’ “So they let him in. ‘Pac had said, ‘Hold up for one minute,’ and he brought back 200 more people. Next thing I knew, it was over. I hear somebody on the mic — he took the mic. Him and his guys got the mic somehow and started rapping. The whole crowd started going crazy. They loved him. The guys from Digital Underground introduced him to me. They said, ‘This is Tupac.’ I met him, he was very young. He was very happy, vivacious. While we pause before the jump, imagine Mike Tyson’s pronunciation of “vivacious.” As for the story of Tyson and Tupac, I’m shocked the world didn’t split in half with those two in the same place. Listen to Tyson’s description of Tupac . It’s eerie: He had a lot of hostility. I think it was just misguided and misdirected. It was obvious he was a genius, he was a prodigy. Whoa! He was just amazing as far as his energy was concerned. He was explosive. … His presence and his energy … the word I’m looking for is fearless. He came across as fearless. When you come across somebody that’s fearless, you’re a little bit in awe. You’re like. ‘Whoa!’ He’s ready to blow, too, at any moment; very volatile. Doesn’t that sound like someone describing Mike Tyson? Without getting too abstract over all this, we’re talking about two of the most complex and polarizing individuals of the past 20 years, both of whom seemed to send ripples through society just by sheer force of nature. Here’s Tyson recounting Tupac’s visit to him in jail: He was standing on the table, started talking. All the people in the prison started going crazy. … The white prisoners, the guards, everybody went crazy in this redneck prison. They went nuts when he came in there. … He was prolific. He was talking, having a ball. … He was very territorial. He was an interesting guy. He was different than any other rapper I had ever met from a philosophical perspective.” Really, there were layers to both men that were beyond our comprehension when they were at the height of their powers. Not until Tupac’s death in 1996 and Tyson’s fall from grace shortly thereafter did we realize just how unique they both were. Powerful, paranoid, and profane. Vilified, venerated, and vulnerable. But most of all, they were impossibly magnetic . Like no boxer or rapper that we’d seen before or since. Humans like Mike Tyson and Tupac Shakur just don’t come along very often. My less abstract reaction? People always talk about their “dream golf foursome.” One of those fun hypotheticals at dinner parties. But I defy you think of a more entertaining trio to hit the links with than these three. In 1993, Tupac Shakur, Mike Tyson, and Eazy-E. Now that would make for an entertaining trip to the country club.

Disappointed That The Celtics Lost Game 6? Blame Dane Cook

Some people in life just have a tendency to make people hate them. Comedian Dane Cook is one such person. So when he showed up with a gorgeous model as his date to Game 5 of the Celtics-Lakers series, we had all the ammo we needed. But now we come to find out the model in question was distracting the Celtics players? From the Boston Herald : Cook told us … that the woman in question is Jessica Caban, an aspiring actress and a former Miss Model Latina, whom he’s been dating for a few months. “It’s casual,” said the comedian, who looked rather proud. “I actually saw some of the guys looking at her,” Cook laughed. “And I thought, if they lose this game, I’m gonna get blamed.” And sure, this happened in Game 5, which the Celtics won, so it’s tough to blame Dane Cook and his “distraction” for the Celtics woes in L.A. two days later. But, “It’s casual,” he said, looking rather proud. What an unremitting douche. For my money, anything bad that happens, ever, should be blamed on Dane Cook. And Jessica. Jessica, Jessica, Jessica. Go rent Employee of the Month . You can do better.

Celtics’ Big 3 may be making last stand (AP)

Two NBA finals meetings in three years used to mean the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers were just getting warmed up. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson did this three times from 1984-87. Boston won all three when the teams squared off in 1962, ’63 and ’65; and repeated the feat three times in four years at the end of that decade.
