Despite (nay, thanks largely to) its $12.76 budget, Steven Spielberg’s contribution to the ‘Laser Cats’ canon last night on SNL — featuring callouts to most of his major films and/or franchises — was arguably his most entertaining work since Catch Me If You Can . I liked it a lot more than War Horse , anyway. This is a man turning a creative corner! When he rolls the TV in and rocks the VHS tape? I pretty much die. Needs more Jaws , though.

Kate Major Charged With Battery in Drunken Melee

Kate Major is looking at some serious jail time. Michael Lohan’s unstable ex-girlfriend has been charged with battery for allegedly attacking three people on a boozy tirade in Florida earlier this winter. The laundry list of criminal charges does not end there. Major was arrested for allegedly beating up a Latino couple in a parking lot and berating them with racist epithets, then calling the arresting officer a “fat f**k. When cops tried to arrest Major, police say that she resisted arrest and tried to kick the officers. After she was arrested, she continued to act belligerently. Major is charged with three counts of battery, one count of resisting arrest and one count of disorderly intoxication … all misdemeanors on top of the felony. If convicted on all counts, Major could face more than four years behind bars. Hope she has a good lawyer. She makes MiLo look like a model citizen! Almost.

David Archuleta broke down in tears last night following a major announcement: he’s leaving the music scene for a couple years to pursue a higher calling. Harry Morgan, MASH Star, Passes Away at 96

Harry Morgan, who played Col. Sherman Potter on TV’s legendary war series M*A*S*H and Jack Webb’s detective partner in Dragnet , died Wednesday at age 96. He and the show became staples of CBS from 1972-1983. The satirical dark comedy was one of TV’s best shows and its finale one of the most-watched events ever. The veteran actor died in his home in Los Angeles, Calif., after suffering from pneumonia, daughter-in-law Beth Morgan told the Associated Press yesterday. “He was side-splittingly funny, a very gentle and loving father-in-law,” Beth Morgan said. “He was very humble about having such a successful career.” Morgan became interested in acting while taking public speaking at the University of Chicago. Local theater stints led to a Broadway production of Golden Boy . After appearing in dramatic films The Ox Box Incident and High Noon , he began a TV career in December Bride and Dragnet , before appearing in M*A*S*H .

Albert Pujols Signs $250 Million Deal with Angels

Albert Pujols shocked the Major League Baseball universe today, spurning a nine-year, $200 million offer from the only team for which he’s ever played – the St. Louis Cardinals – and signing a 10-year, $250 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A three-time MVP, who batted .299 and blasted 37 homers last season, Pujols will join an Angels squad that also inked start C.J. Wilson to a contract today. He was expected to remain in St. Louis, or possibly sign with Miami, until Anaheim swooped in at the last moment. Pujols won the Rookie of the Year award in 2001 and has a lifetime .328 batting average. The 31-year old has also hit 445 home runs.

We had no idea Vybz Kartel was about that life. Not like THIS! via JamaicaObserver.com : Investigators from the Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT) yesterday evening charged dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of firearm. A news release from the police said that the charges against the deejay, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, were made following the conduct of an interview yesterday afternoon by detectives from the MIT in the presence of his attorneys. “The allegation is that on Monday, July 11, 2011, Palmer, along with other men, conspired to murder Barrington Burton o/c ‘Bossie’, a 27-year-old businessman/promoter of a Gregory Park address in St Catherine. Burton was murdered while he was standing with friends along Walkers Avenue in Gregory Park,” the police release said. Oh, there were witnesses? It’s a wrap. This was the scene when they picked him up… What could have possibly been that serious for him to throw his whole life and career away?

REVIEW: Brad Pitt Puts a Golden Spin on Moneyball

Young actors are wonderful creatures, breezing — or busting — on to the landscape as if from nowhere, indulging us in the delight of discovery. But the twin pleasure of finding a new actor is watching an older one sidestep into territory you don’t expect, becoming someone you’d never have thought he could be. That’s where we’re at with Brad Pitt, who has never been better than he is in Bennett Miller’s Moneyball . As Billy Beane, the beleaguered Oakland A’s general manager who turned his team around by thinking outside the Major League Baseball box, Pitt works wonders by seeming to do nothing at all.
