Sandra Bullock Shares Love For New Orleans On ‘Today’

Actress talked about son Louis’ hometown and the school she helped rebuild. By Gil Kaufman Sandra Bullock on the “Today” show Tuesday Photo: NBC Much has been made about Oscar winner Sandra Bullock ‘s ties to the college town of Austin, Texas, where the star has retreated to avoid the paparazzi’s glare since her divorce from Jesse James . But on Tuesday (August 31), Bullock appeared on the “Today” show to discuss her love for New Orleans, where she has found another home. Bullock , in her first televised interview since her split with James, told host Matt Lauer that the Big Easy has always been a comfortable place for her, somewhere she has gone often to visit, ring in the new year and most recently, the place where she finalized her adoption of son Louis. But the reason she was there this week was to celebrate the successful rebuilding of the Warren Easton Charter High School, which suffered more than $4 million in damage five years ago this week during Hurricane Katrina . She sat next to Arthur Hardy, a New Orleans Mardi Gras expert and Easton board member, who said he laughed when Bullock called with an offer to help help, thinking someone was pulling his leg. “She found us … [and] called me on a Sunday afternoon,” he said, laughing. “I like to cold-call people, people who I think are outstanding community members … how you doin’?” Bullock joked. Hardy said because he’s in the Mardi Gras business, “I deal with crazy people every day. So when she said, ‘This is Sandra Bullock,’ I said, ‘This is Clark Gable,’ and I was about to hang up.” Hardy said once Bullock met the kids of the school, it cemented her decision to help out however she could. Bullock helped raise funds to rebuild the school, which has its own health clinic and close to a 100 percent graduation rate, and she spoke about how Katrina exposed the cracks in New Orleans society around the issue of poverty. “It opened up something that I don’t think people knew about or maybe didn’t want to see,” she said. “But right here under this roof, there are souls and spirits and young people who don’t come from any money but carry this extraordinary spirit to override that, suck in every ounce of education that the school provides and get out of here and create a life for them that is beautiful and fulfilling … let this school be an example of how we don’t need to leave anyone behind.” With her adoption of Nola-born Louie, whom she calls her “little Cajun cookie,” finalized, Bullock explained the relief she felt to finally have him all to herself. “It felt like it was time,” she said of the long process of adoption, noting that she did not cut any corners or ask for favors based on her fame. “It was nice to have someone say, ‘I think you’re a fit parent.’ ” She also talked about his “healthy” poop schedules, the shift in priorities a child brings to a parent’s life and the secret of how she kept Louie’s adoption, well, a secret. “It takes good people with integrity,” she said, explaining how she was able to hide the bombshell from the prying press even as she was basking in an Oscar win for “The Blind Side.” “Human beings exist that have integrity, that know how to keep their mouth shut. That know the bigger picture, that don’t sell out their friends,” she said. “Everything passes, they know if they screw up, they’re not coming up on the next vacation, I’m not gonna babysit their kids … I will cut them. I will take them down … I have friends and family that are filled with massive amounts of integrity. It shouldn’t be an oddity.” Though Jesse James and the divorce did not come up and Lauer kept the questions mostly benign, Bullock pointedly used the word “integrity” several times in the interview, perhaps as a not-so-coded statement on her feelings of betrayal in the messy divorce caused by James’ multiple infidelities. MSNBC Fill-In Host: Conservative Liberal Media Claims Based On Racism

Cenk Uygur, host of the left-wing internet talk show ‘The Young Turks,’ filled in for MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan during the 4PM ET hour on Wednesday and decried the nation’s “shift to the Right.” He lamented: “…when I started out I was a liberal Republican. No such thing exists anymore.” [Audio available here ] He wondered why the media hadn’t reported on the supposed radical shift in American politics and quickly came up with this explanation: “Why the media didn’t challenge it is because they [conservatives] kept calling them the liberal media, and why did they call them that? Because during civil rights, they [the media] said ‘yeah, black people and white people are the same’ and the conservatives at the time said ‘damn liberal media,’ and, you know, that intimidated the media into not recognizing this trend.” Uygur’s liberal guests, author Linda Monk and Wesleyen University professor Claire Potter did not disagree. In fact, Monk made sure to criticize President Eisenhower for his views on civil rights: “…let’s not be too celebratory of Eisenhower. He did stand up for the desegregation decisions. He did his job as president. But privately he was known for saying that racial desegregation was social disintegration, so he perhaps wasn’t as progressive on the race issue as some would interpret his actions to be.” Here is a transcript of the July 7 exchange: 4:43PM CENK UYGUR: And Claire, why do you think the spectrum has shifted so much, and another question is why is the media apparently not noticed it at all? CLAIRE POTTER [PROFESSOR, WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY]: Well, I think one of the things you have to look at is the context. A figure like Eisenhower, for example, was a politician during a period in which the Republicans and the Democrats had a horror of extremism. I think in the 15 or 20 years after World War II, there was a kind of centrist consensus that both extremes were to be avoided and that cooperation should be the norm. Now the only place that didn’t really work is race, until the Johnson administration. But for- LINDA MONK [AUTHOR, THE WORDS WE LIVE BY]: I think you’ve got McCarthy, though, coming along in the Eisenhower time, and certainly that was within the Republican Party, and that was a strong ideological bent, so I hear what you’re saying about there’s a concern about extremism, but certainly it had a place during the Republican Party at that time. POTTER: Sure. I mean, I don’t think you’re wrong about that, but I think one of the things that you see between 1948 and 1970 is a seismic shift in relation to who is a Democrat and who is a Republican. MONK: Right. POTTER: So that there is an enormous liberal block in the Republican Party the Democratic northern liberals are working with. MONK: Right. POTTER: And that southern Democrats, who are conservatives and can be brought along with a variety of Democratic initiatives, eventually moved to the Republican Party. MONK: Right. POTTER: Over desegregation and busing. UYGUR: Linda and Claire, I agree with both of you, and by the end of it, you know, I remember, even in my lifetime, when I started out I was a liberal Republican. No such thing exists anymore. POTTER: You and Nelson Rockefeller. UYGUR: Yeah. That’s wiped off the face of the earth, and so we see how – and part of the movement I think is because – and why the media didn’t challenge it – is because they kept calling them the liberal media, and why did they call them that? Because during civil rights, they said ‘yeah, black people and white people are the same’ and the conservatives at the time said ‘damn liberal media,’ and, you know, that intimidated the media into not recognizing this trend, I think. MONK: Well, and let’s not – let’s not be too celebratory of Eisenhower. He did stand up for the desegregation decisions. He did his job as president. But privately he was known for saying that racial desegregation was social disintegration, so he perhaps wasn’t as progressive on the race issue as some would interpret his actions to be. POTTER: Well- UYGUR: That’s a very fair point. We got to wrap it up right there. Linda and Claire, thank you, both of you, for joining us. Really appreciate it. MONK: Thanks, Cenk. POTTER: Thank you.

Jimmy Buffet Blames Bush’s Oil Ties for BP Spill: “It was like Dracula Running a Blood Bank”

Jimmy Buffett, a singer famed for his laid-back island tunes, had some harsh words for the people he claims are responsible for the BP oil spill – the administration of former President George W. Bush. The Obama-supporting musician told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he believed the Bush administration was responsible for the crisis, due to their alleged ties to oil companies. “To me it was more about eight years of bad policy before [Obama] got there that let this happen,” said Buffett. “It was Dracula running the blood bank in terms of oil and leases.” While celebrities from Larry King to James Cameron have already lined up to offer aid to people impacted by the oil spill, Buffett says he also hopes that his sea-side concert next Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama will soothe people’s anger over the crisis. Buffett will be playing a sea-side concert next Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama. “People were going, ‘What are you going to do about things?’ I mean, hell, I can’t stick my finger in that hole. Everybody wishes they could,” Buffett told the Associated Press on Tuesday. “What I’m best at is two hours of escapism for people that have to go back and either live jobs that they don’t like or whatever…it’s that Mardi Gras mentality.” But Buffett’s attempt to cheer up Gulf Coast residents may have backfired. According to Alabama news website Al.com, the Margaritaville-singer’s comments sparked anger among some readers who said Buffett should stick to music and stay out of partisan politics. Al.com is a site owned by The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and The Mobile Press-Register. In an article published by the site’s staff titled, “What you’re saying: Jimmy Buffett should leave out politics,” the writers noted that Buffett’s comments sent readers “into a frenzy of discussion over the singer-songwriter’s political affiliations.” “When is this administration going to grow up and start taking responsibility for anything?” wrote one commenter cited in the article. “I hope the people of Alabama boycott his sister’s restuarant in Gulf Shores. I will never eat there again.” “I have tickets for the concert and plan to attend. However, if Jimmy starts with the Bush bashing and Obama praising, I won’t boo, but I will yell, “shut up and sing,'” wrote another.

Lenny Kravitz Headlining Gulf Aid To Benefit Gulf Coast

Show aimed at putting spotlight on devastating oil spill also features Mos Def, Ani DiFranco. By Gil Kaufman Lenny Kravitz Photo: Jo Hale/ Getty Images With much of the music world’s attention focused on the devastating flooding in Nashville , Lenny Kravitz is hoping to put some of that focus on the environmental disaster that continues to unfold on the Gulf Coast as a result of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Kravitz, who is a part-time New Orleans resident, is the latest name added to an all-star benefit show, Gulf Aid , slated to take place on May 16 at Mardi Gras World River City. The concert will feature the rocker performing alongside Mos Def, Ani DiFranco, New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, environmental activist/ poet/ singer Zachary Richard, New Orleans trumpeter Jeremy Davenport and the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars, which features Crescent City legends Dr. John, Tab Benoit, George Porter Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and Cyril Neville. Also participating are the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse Revue, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band, and others. Tickets are $50 and available exclusively at Elevate.com . Proceeds will be distributed to groups addressing wetlands/coastal environmental issues and the well-being of fishermen and the regional seafood industry, a vital part of the local economy. “I’ve come home to New Orleans to lend my support to fishermen & wildlife,” Kravitz tweeted on Monday. The show will come almost three weeks after an explosion on an oil-drilling rig off the Louisiana coast burst into flames and sank, setting off one of the biggest oil spills in the history of the Gulf of Mexico. So far, efforts to contain the leak have failed, as more than 210,000 gallons of light crude spew into the water daily, threatening vital wetland ecosystems off the Louisiana coast as well as one of the nation’s most fertile fishing regions. On Tuesday, organizers of the upcoming Hangout Beach Music & Arts Festival (May 14-16) in Gulf Shores, Alabama, announced that all profits from the three-day event will benefit coastal conservation and restoration. Hangout will feature sets from Phish’s Trey Anastasio and TAB, Zac Brown Band, John Legend, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Black Crowes, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Gov’t Mule, the Roots, Ray LaMontagne, Jakob Dylan, Spearhead, Matisyahu, Girl Talk, and OK Go. T-Pain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross ‘Re-Create’ Atlanta Block Party In ‘Freaknik’

Cartoon premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. By Hillary Crosley “Freaknik: The Musical” Photo: Adult Swim T-Pain has a cartoon on the way called “Freaknik: The Musical,” but it’s probably not for kids. The show, airing March 7 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, will be an hour-long extravaganza detailing a group’s quest to “successfully resurrect the spirit of Freaknik … the biggest spring-break party known to man.” On Wednesday morning (February 24), T-Pain tweeted a trailer including castmembers like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg discussing the show and remembering their experiences at the original Freaknik. “Back in the ’90s, Freaknik was Atlanta’s version of the ultimate block party. It was Mardi Gras meets spring break, at your crazy cousin’s bachelor party, and anything could happen,” T-Pain said in a statement last month. “A decade later, I’m bringing it back for people like me, who didn’t get to experience it the first time around. We’ve re-created Freaknik’s vibe and energy with amazing animation, new music and an all-star cast of characters.” The Adult Swim cartoon has long been in the works, and T-Pain has recruited everyone from comedians Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Charlie Murphy to musicians Cee-Lo, Big Boi and George Clinton to lend their voices to the show. Still, with all the good-time nostalgia flying around, some participants like Rick Ross had to be coaxed into joining the “Freaknik” cast. “If it was for anybody else, I wouldn’t even be part of a cartoon,” Ross said. “But because of what Pain told me, he told me we’re doing it uncut, we’re doing it. It turned out to be fun, man, so it’s me, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, the list goes on.” Others were more than happy to relive the glory. “I was at the first Freaknik back when it first started in, like, the early ’90s, when it was poppin’. … I was a young rapper, selling CDs and tapes and posters,” Snoop Dogg recalled with a smile. Pain isn’t the first hip-hop star to team up with Cartoon Network. In 2006, Outkast’s Andre 3000 produced “Class of 3000,” an animated series set in Atlanta’s Westley School of Performing Arts. And Danger Mouse and MF Doom released an album and EP — 2005’s The Mouse and the Mask and ’06’s Occult Hymn — that featured beats taken from Adult Swim programming (and more than a few cameos by Adult Swim stars). “Freaknik: The Musical” premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network.
