Robert Pattinson’s ‘Cosmopolis’: The Cannes Reviews Are In!

Critics are split on whether the ‘Twilight’ actor was the right casting choice. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson at Cannes Film Fest Photo: AFP After supporting his girlfriend Kristen Stewart as she debuted “On the Road,” Robert Pattinson hit the Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25) to premiere his film “Cosmopolis.” Directed by David Cronenberg, the film follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut. His entire world is falling apart — his marriage is failing, his financial status is slipping and even his very life is being threatened. As reviews of the film pour in, it’s apparent that critics agree the film has its odd moments, but they’re split on whether Pattinson is the perfect choice for the lead role. Here’s what the critics had to say about “Cosmopolis.” The Story ” ‘Cosmopolis,’ an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s typically provocative novel of the same name, is the first feature film since 1999’s ‘eXistenZ’ that filmmaker David Cronenberg has directed and scripted. This in part explains why ‘Cosmopolis’ is such a triumph: it’s both an exceptional adaptation and a remarkable work unto itself. Cronenberg makes slight but salient changes to DeLillo’s source narrative. These changes, which are best described by one character as ‘slight variation[s],’ prove that Cronenberg’s given serious consideration to what should and shouldn’t be represented in his adaptation of the author’s ruminative, conversation-driven narrative. For example, in Cronenberg’s film, Eric Packer (a surprisingly adequate Robert Pattinson), an ambivalent and self-destructive power broker, does not get to have sex with his wife like he’s wanted to do throughout DeLillo’s book. Other changes, like the fact that Packer is investing and studying the steady rise in the Chinese yuan in the film and not the Japanese yen, as in the book, are equally striking. These differences noticeably enrich DeLillo’s original story, making Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’ that much more rewarding in its own dizzying way.” — Simon Abrams, Indiewire Robert Pattinson “On the page and on film, Eric is a controlled and controlling figure, a man impervious to society’s norms who one must feel has a mind operating well beyond the capacities of mere mortals. He’s utterly humorless and without detectable compassion or accessible humanity, which makes him less than companionable as a character. Pattinson doesn’t help matters by revealing nothing behind the eyes and delivering nearly all his lines with the same rhythm and intonations, plus repetitive head nods in the bargain. It’s a tough character that perhaps a young Jeremy Irons could have made riveting, but Pattinson is too bland and monotonous to hold the interest.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter “After ‘Water for Elephants’ it remains to be seen whether Pattinson’s teen following really is willing to follow him anywhere. But ‘Cosmopolis’ does prove that he has the chops, and he parlays his cult persona beautifully into the spoiled, demanding Packer, a man so controlling and ruthless that only he has the power to ruin himself. Lean and spiky — with his clean white shirt he resembles a groomed Sid Vicious — Pattinson nails a difficult part almost perfectly.” — Damon Wise, Empire Online The Details “There are other cast members who do an excellent idea of wrapping their heads around DeLillo’s big ideas and Cronenberg’s indirect dialogue — Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton, Mathieu Almaric and Paul Giamatti — and the music, by Metric, supplies the right kind of spiky, sensuous unease for a man driven across town and driven to self-destruction. The film’s cynicism is both majestic and well-earned; at one point, Eric notes ‘… nobody hates the rich … everybody thinks they’re ten seconds away from being rich.’ A chilly, crisp and crystal-shard sharp satire of our money-crazed world, ‘Cosmopolis’ takes us on a limo ride through the collapse of modern society: We’re not behind the wheel for this ride, but rest assured, in the end, we’re going to have to get out and pay for it.” — James Rocchi, MSN.com The Final Word “[R]ather than a thriller, ‘Cosmopolis’ plays more like a wispy film of ideas, with conversations in the limo about society, wealth and humanity dominating most of the screen time. Almost all of these feel detached and meticulously unfocused. Characters toss around ideas or questions, which their conversation partner then promptly ignores or responds to with a non-sequitur. It’s often reminiscent of work by playwright/screenwriter Harold Pinter, but never quite as fun, nor nearly as humorous as it should be. … Cronenberg has still made an odd, uncompromising and occasionally brilliant film of his own, one which is well worth seeing if only for the deft way Cronenberg finds an emotional arc in such an inhuman world. Or else to see how perfectly Pattinson’s performance suits the director.” — Brian Clark, Twitch Check out everything we’ve got on “Cosmopolis.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Robert Pattinson: Working With ‘Cosmopolis’ Director Was ‘A Relief’

Actor reveals how he prepared for his role in the David Cronenberg film at a Cannes Film Festival press conference. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Photo: AFP Director David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” received mixed reviews after its debut at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25). Critics were split on whether they felt Robert Pattinson was right for the lead role. Some felt his performance was bland, but others thought he nailed the part, fitting well into the director’s vision. During a press conference for the film, Pattinson explained why he and Cronenberg work well together, chalking it up to Cronenberg’s careful direction. “If [a director’s] sitting on the set, a bunch of people will ask you questions all the time,” he said. “And then a lot of directors, I find, are kind of exhausted by the time they’re actually supposed to do their job with the actors. They’re not really listening anymore. I think David is listening so intently when you’re doing a scene. … When you feel something in a scene, you know that he’s seen it, which is such a relief. And it makes you actually pay attention to what you’re doing as well.” Cronenberg also made Pattinson aware of different camera angles and how the placement of cameras can greatly affect his performance. “I think a lot of directors and actors refuse to accept anything about camera technique,” Pattinson continued. “[Cronenberg was] completely frank about it and [said], ‘Listen, if I put a camera here, it’s going to totally affect the way you perform.’ And it really did, the blocking was like direction, which I never really experienced before.” “Cosmopolis” follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in a futuristic New York City. As he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut, the world is falling apart around him — protestors are rioting, his marriage is failing, his vast financial status is declining and he soon discovers clues that reveal an attempt on his life. When asked how he prepared for the taxing role, Pattinson told the audience he spent a lot of the time concerned over how his performance would come together. “I kind of spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying and confusing myself. And I remember the weekend before shooting, I called David — because we had no rehearsals — to talk to him about it. [I said,] ‘I just wanted to sort of ask one question,’ ” he recalled, mimicking his timid tone. “He said, ‘Do you want to talk about the movie for a second?’ So I went to his house and I think he just said that it doesn’t really matter: ‘Let’s just start and something will happen.’ ” Worrying aside, Pattinson found a way to bring his character to life. He didn’t improvise scenes and he didn’t change any of the lines. He stuck to the script and followed Cronenberg’s vision for his character as it was laid out in front of him. “I think [Eric Packer’s] impossible to approach like you would a normal character,” he said. “What I liked about the script initially was its lyricism and just the rhythms of it. Normally when you do a movie, you can kind of blur the lines and make it your own. But with this, I didn’t want to change a single word, even the punctuation. That made it easier, it’s like you’re doing a song instead of a movie. It freed you up. If you’re trying to do something in a cerebral way, it becomes about ego and it’s silly at that point.” Did Pattinson find similarities between himself and his character? “I do think people are trying to kill me all the time,” he joked. Cannes: Brad Pitt Talks Killing Them Softly, Politics, Violence and Marriage

Politics lurched to the forefront Tuesday in Cannes as director Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly took its turn as the spotlighted world premiere here. But this isn’t just any world premiere: This one featured Brad Pitt, who manages to still excite even some otherwise jaded festival attendees. Mobs climbed over each other as the actor entered and exited the morning press conference for his new film about a group of criminals and mobsters vying for self-interest. One can only choose which bad guy to root for. Based on George V. Higgins’ ’70s-era novel Cogan’s Trade , Dominik adapted the story, setting his mob-infused drama against the backdrop of the economic crisis and the election of President Obama in 2008. “What I liked about the book was that it had great characters,” said Dominik, who previously directed Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007. “But when I was adapting it, I realized it was a book about economic crisis. I always feel crime films are about capitalism. All the characters are motivated by money only, and I realized also that people in America are concerned about money – and people in Hollywood are motivated by that… I was.” Brad Pitt plays Cogan, a pragmatic hit man whose job is to whack armed robbers who held up a gambling session packed with mobsters. Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Johnny (Vincent Curatola) pull off the heist in a dingy back room brimming with scowling gangsters. Though a messy job, they manage to take off with the loot, humiliating their otherwise intimidating victims. “[While] reading this story, I realized it is a commentary on the times now, the foreclosure debacle and the economic crisis,” said Pitt, who also serves as a producer on the film. “It wasn’t until the end of the story that I saw it was in fact a microcosm of what’s happening now as a [manifestation] of the macro world.” As with John Hillcoat’s Lawless , which premiered here Saturday, the use of violence – and there certainly is a good amount of it in Killing Them Softly – became a momentary hot topic in the packed press conference with both Dominik and Pitt defending it as necessary and a reflection of society generally. “I don’t understand the obsession with violence,” Dominik said. “It’s like people who don’t want to show children fairy tales. But fairy tales dramatize children’s concerns and emotions.” Added Pitt: “Violence is an accepted part of the gangster world. It’s an accepted possibility when dealing in crime. I’d have a much harder problem playing a racist for instance than, say, shooting someone right in the face.” Continuing, Pitt related violence to everyday life and perhaps inadvertently ushered in 10 minutes of conversation about politics and even his personal life — some of which is bound to generate standalone headlines including rumors about his marriage, how he is likely to vote and even gay marriage. “We live in such a violent world,” he said. “I grew up hunting. If you have a hamburger… Have you seen how they butcher a cow? It’s so violent, it’s morbid. It’s part of the everyday. So violence has a place in film. I don’t see a world without it.” Pitt’s character in the film, which drew early mixed reactions here today, is centered on self-interest. He doesn’t particularly crave violence, but uses it as a means to an end. He’s not bloodthirsty nor does he particularly find murder palatable, but he’s willing to do it as painlessly as possible in order to get ahead. “It’s a metaphor for business — it’s cutthroat but has to be done,” he said. “I’d love someone to develop a documentary about what makes a Democrat or a Republican,” Pitt added. “How do people vote against their own self-interest? I lean Democrat and to the left, but I am interested in how all people think.” At one point, the conversation meandered way off the Killing Them Softly script and the titillating subject of Pitt’s pending marriage to Angelina Jolie came out. He said there is no truth to the rumors that they’ve set a date, but a wedding is in the future, but added, “I’m still hoping we’ll figure out the marriage equality situation in the States before that happens.” Pitt had said some years ago he and Jolie would marry once gays were allowed to be married. He also said they’d “love to do a movie together again sometime.” Despite the film’s not-so-subtle metaphors about the economic crisis and President Obama’s election, Dominik and Pitt said its planned Stateside rollout this September had nothing to do with the pending fall presidential campaign in the US. Pitt did, however, take a jab at the financial fallout that began in ’08 — as well as those responsible: “The economic crisis was criminal, by the way, and there have been no repercussions from that criminality.” Read more of Movieline’s Cannes 2012 coverage here .

Trapped In The Closet: Did Obama Accidentally Out ABC’s Robin Roberts With Gay Marriage Interview???

Obama Unintentionally Brought Attention To Robin Roberts’ Sexuality With Gay Marriage Interview Is “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts trapped in the closet? And did her historic interview with Barack Obama just bring more attention to rumors about her own sexuality? That’s what some folks are saying: President Obama may have unintentionally “outed” ABC newswoman Robin Roberts by giving the “Good Morning America” host his historic gay-marriage interview. Insiders say the president had no idea that the 51-year-old had long been at the center of gay rumors. And while the unmarried “GMA” star knew that taking on the assignment would shine a spotlight on her personal life, insiders say there was no way she was “going to turn down a career-making interview,” said a friend. “It was the first time a sitting president declared his support for same-sex marriage. “When Robin was told by ABC bosses that she was handpicked for the interview, she immediately put her personal issues to the side and said she’d do it. “But it appears Obama knew nothing of the rumors, and in some respects he may have unintentionally outed her by making her Robin has never been linked romantically to a man, and Internet bloggers have been buzzing for years that she may “play for the same team.” After the May 9 interview at the White House, the gay website Queerty.com questioned whether Obama chose Robin for the interview because he’d heard the rumors that she was a lesbian. Throughout her career, Robin has tried to steer clear of discussing her sexuality. A breast cancer survivor, she lives on New York’s Upper West Side with her Jack Russell terrier, K.J. “The White House never told ABC or Robin why she was chosen,” noted a source. “She wants to believe it was because she’s a fair and accurate TV journalist. “But if she is gay, it’s certainly going to make her even more popular in that community than she already is.” SMH @ 51-years-old living on Upper West Side with her Jack Russell terrier K.J… Poor thang! Not that there is anything wrong with being single at any age, it’s just the way they painted her all “pitiful”. We weren’t even thinking about whether or not Robin was gay when Obama was talking to her, but now that they mention it… What do you think? Source Getty Images Continue reading

Kanye West Most Definetely Going To Be On Keeping Up With The Kardashians Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are going to be as big as Bey & Jay… financially: As we’ve already told you, Kim Kardashian’s boyfriend Kanye West was at big sister Kourtney Kardashian’s baby shower on Saturday. And yup, the reality show cameras were rolling. So does this mean Mr. West is going to be appearing on Keeping Up With the Kardashians? He will…at least a little bit. Not only is he in the just released television spot promoting the new season of KUWTK, but Kim, 31, tells me he will appear in a few episodes. “I want to show my life,” she told me earlier today. While Kim says she’s not ready to talk about her relationship with West, 34, she did say, “If we are having dinner and he does show up, I’m sure we’re not going to go, ‘Stop the cameras!’” In other words, we won’t be seeing Keeping Up With Kim and Kanye or Kim and Kanye Take the World anytime soon. “I’m not going to be taking a bubble bath and drinking champagne or on a sex swing [on camera] like Khloé [Kardashian Odom] and Lamar [Odom] do,” Kim said. “It’s not going to be like that.” Kim admits her marriage to Kris Humphries leaves her a bit weary of sharing as much as she once did. “My heart’s a little more guarded,” she said. “I showed so much of myself in the past. You almost get embarrassed showing this big wedding, which I would have had cameras or not. So I think you want to just guard yourself.” Meanwhile, the family may be heading to London for the Olympics this summer. Khloé’s hubby, 32, is hoping to be on the U.S. basketball team. He’ll find out the he made the cut in early July. “I’ve never been to London,” said Khloé, 27. “I’m just going to stand in front of Buckingham Palace and screaming, ‘Let me in!’” Turn the page for the video of Kim channeling her mother and Kanye accompanying her.

John Cena and Wife: It’s Over!

John Cena will soon be free to pile drive any woman he wants… if you know what we mean! The WWE Superstar has filed for divorce from his wife of three years, Liz Huberdeau. In the documents, Cena says the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” The couple signed a prenuptial agreement in 2009, TMZ reports, but Liz has hired the same attorney (Raymond Rafool) used by Linda Hogan when she recently fleeced Hulk Hogan after their union dissolved. “Although it is indeed unfortunate that John Cena decided to divorce his high school sweetheart Liz Cena; particularly, after they have come so far in their lives and in his career together, Liz will and really has no choice but to pursue all of her rights and entitlements,” Rafool said in a statement. “Sadly, divorce is not the way Liz thought her perfect love story would end.” Blah… blah. Whatever. Here is the important question: John Cena, would you hit it?
