‘The Hobbit’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Much-anticipated return to Middle-earth appeals to loyal ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans. By Kevin P. Sullivan Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Just days after the 10th anniversary of the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” we have our first look at director Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth. The first trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” packs in a ton of action and gives fans a peek at what they can expect when the first of the two films opens next December. We took some time off from watching the trailer on repeat to give you the rundown on the five key things you should pay attention to in the trailer. The Hobbit(s) It wouldn’t be “The Hobbit” without a strong member of the Shire folk to rally behind. Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, and he jumps right into Jackson’s Middle-earth and feels right at home. He also fits in with the two returning hobbits, Elijah Wood and Ian Holm . Both make welcome returns in the trailer and draw in fans of the original films almost effortlessly. The Dwarves Almost as important as Bilbo in “The Hobbit,” all 13 dwarves play key roles in the story. Fans who feared that the dwarves would look too cartoonish should find some peace of mind with the trailer. They completely worked (especially Richard Armitage as Thorin), with a balance between the child-oriented aspects of the book and the grittier look of the “Lord of the Rings” movies. The Song Nothing shows off that balance better than the dwarves’ song. J.R.R. Tolkien featured many songs in the novel, and Jackson and co. incorporated this one in a natural way. It’s a cool and ominous part of the trailer that sets the tone and shows the film’s close adherence to the novel. However, the films do diverge from the novel to cover new material in a few instances. The White Council Because the book does not offer enough action for two complete movies, the films have been padded out with tales from the appendixes and other Tolkien books. The main addition is the story of the White Council. For those unfamiliar with the books, during the journey to Lonely Mountain, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves to fight a mysterious enemy alongside Galadriel and Elrond. Jackson confirmed the story line’s presence in the movie, but Cate Blanchett ‘s appearance in the trailer is our only hint of what’s to come. Gollum The trailer’s big reveal comes at the end as the camera cranes down to the One Ring in the foreground. Next thing we know, Bilbo is chatting up Gollum in the dark, and Andy Serkis crawls down to make his welcome return to the character. The ring and Gollum are the two biggest connections between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” so their presence here is a near guarantee to rope in any fans of the first films. ‘Hobbit’ Trailer Goes Back To Middle-earth

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ teaser features Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and other ‘Lord of the Rings’ characters. By Kara Warner Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: Warner Bros. What a week of 2012 movie trailers and teasers! We’ve had looks at “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Wrath of the Titans,” and now, the first official trailer for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” part one of his two-film treatment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book. The trailer opens with an elderly Bilbo (Ian Holm) explaining to Frodo (Elijah Wood) that he might not have shared all there was to know about his adventures, followed by a quick cut to young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) being recruited to come on a new journey with Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). It then introduces a slew of Dwarves and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), who begin an eerie foreshadowing chant that provides backing for quick clips of this new fellowship on their journey. After that, it shows brief glimpses of Cate Blanchett reprising her role as ethereal Galadriel and a shadowy appearance of Andy Serkis as Gollum muttering about his “precious.” While “The Hobbit” is a return to Tolkien’s famous Middle-earth for Jackson, whose critically acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy won millions of fans around the world and 17 Oscars, this film has a slightly different tone and look to it. “The Hobbit” takes place 60 years before the events that unfold in “The Fellowship of the Ring” and follows Bilbo Baggins’ journey to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the treacherous dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo and the brave warrior Thorin Oakenshield have run-ins with Goblins, Orcs, Wargs and giant spiders — and a chance meeting with Gollum that will change the course of Bilbo’s life forever and leads to the discovery of the “one ring to rule them all.” Much to the delight of the “Lord of the Rings” dedicated fanbase, many of the actors from Jackson’s first three films are reprising their roles: Andy Serkis is back as Gollum, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Christopher Lee as Saruman. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is set to arrive in theaters December 14, 2012. The first trailer for the World War I drama about a boy (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse has arrived online, and you might want to bring a tissue to watch it ahead.

Bad Movies We Love: Punchline

Before you watch Tom Hanks cling to Julia Roberts and a deplorable moped in Larry Crowne this weekend, please take a moment to remember when he clung to Sally Field and a mic stand in the 1988 riot of confusion called Punchline . It’s about standup comedy. Which is funny! When it is funny. And Punchline ? Is not that word, which is repeated repeatedly in Punchline . That’s what qualifies it as a lovably bad movie, not to mention the most appropriately titled one of all time. Because it is not funny. But it is a joke. And I doubt you’ve heard this one before.

Check Out Two New Photos From The Hobbit: Bilbo and Gandalf Face Off

Thanks to a couple of new stills in Empire magazine, the latest pictures of Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman’s sepia-hued prestige in The Hobbit are upon us! And they look… so shadowy. Like a Middle-earth version of There Will Be Blood , where Martin Freeman plays H.W. and McKellen plays a post-apocalyptic version of Daniel Plainview (whose Pringles mustache is replaced with a fibrous beard). Get a load of “young” Gandalf and a new quote from Peter Jackson.

‘The Hobbit’: First-Look Photos Of Bilbo, Gandalf Hit Net

Martin Freeman’s eagerly anticipated prequel Bilbo Baggins turns up in character, complete with hairy feet and pointy ears. By Eric Ditzian Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit” Photo: New Line Cinema via Entertainment Weekly Although he’s busy once again creating a Middle Earth-like world in the wilds of New Zealand, “Hobbit” director Peter Jackson has done an excellent job keeping fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantastical creations looped into the production. He’s been posting photos, videos and updates on his Facebook page for months — including a few pics of himself in what appears to be Bilbo Baggins’ home . But what we haven’t seen until now are official photos of the stars in character and on set. That’s all changing, thanks to three pics posted by Entertainment Weekly . One image features Martin Freeman as Bilbo, another focuses on Ian McKellan as Gandalf, and the last captures both Freeman and Jackson in that familiar home. The first photo is the one fans have been waiting years to see: a real-life representation of Bilbo himself. After all the production delays, the speculation and the rumors about the casting of the central character (James McAvoy? Daniel Radcliffe?), we finally are getting a look at Freeman (perhaps best known from the British version of “The Office”) in character, complete with hairy feet, pointy ears and shaggy hair. ”He fits the ears and he’s got some very nice feet,” Jackson told EW about Freeman’s portrayal of Bilbo. ”I think he’s got the biggest hobbit feet we’ve had so far. They’re a little bit hard to walk in, but he’s managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait.” The second pic captures, in Gandalf, someone we’re very familiar with from the “Lord of the Rings” series but who will be surrounded by a new cast of characters in this prequel story, the first part of which hits theaters in December 2012. ”He’s in fantastic form,” Jackson said of McKellan. ”In a way, his role in ‘The Hobbit’ has more technical difficulties than ‘Lord of the Rings’ did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters — obviously the dwarves and the hobbit are shorter. … I remember saying to him [ laughs ], ‘Look, this isn’t “Waiting for Godot” or “King Lear.” This is “The Hobbit.” This is the real thing. ‘ ” The final photo takes us inside an on-set conversation with Jackson and Freeman, one of roughly a zillion the two are likely to have, considering how long the shoot will last. ”There’s no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these,” the director said. ”When we were going through the schedule for ‘The Hobbit,’ I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we’d be shooting for 254 days. We’re only 12 days short of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ even though we’re only doing two movies. When I saw that, I had to sort of pick myself up off the floor and carry on.” Tell us what you think of the new “Hobbit” photos in the comments section! ‘The Hobbit’ Casts ‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Star Bret McKenzie

McKenzie had small roles in first and third ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. By Gil Kaufman Bret McKenzie Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Gettu Images It’s “Business Time” for Bret McKenzie. After showing up briefly as an extra in the first and third “Lord of the Rings” movies, the “Flight of the Conchords” co-star has joined the sprawling cast of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” prequels. And the New Zealand native won’t have to travel far, since once again Jackson has set up shop in his home country for the films, which began filming two weeks ago. Variety reported that McKenzie will play the role of Lindir, an elf of Rivendell, in the 3-D films, which will be shot over the next 14 months at a studio in Wellington and other locations around New Zealand. McKenzie joins a cast that already features Martin Freeman in the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, as well as returning “Rings” vets Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Andy Serkis . “The Hobbit” is set 60 years before “LOTR” and follows the adventures of humble hobbit Bilbo, who rises to heroic stature as he leads a group of fellow dwarves on an epic journey to reclaim a treasure from the dragon Smaug. With the “Conchords” on permanent hiatus after wrapping their second season of the show on HBO in 2009, McKenzie was freed up to join the “Hobbit” cast. Some movie sites have already begun speculating that given his higher profile now, McKenzie may have a beefier part than the three seconds of screen time he had in “The Fellowship of the Ring” during the Council of Elrond. After that appearance, fans began referring to his character as “Figwit,” which stands for “Frodo is great … who is that?” McKenzie’s wife, Hannah, even made a short documentary about the Figwit phenomenon that she submitted to the Auckland International Film Festival in 2004. The “Conchords” also paid homage to McKenzie’s star turn in season one with the song “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Torture Fetishist Katee Sackhoff Joins CSI

Three years after CBS brass rejected Katie Sackhoff as Jorja Fox’s replacement, CSI producers have finally succeeded in casting the 24 alum in a potentially recurring role on the procedural. According to EW , Sackhoff will play “Detective Reed, a smart, tough, and feisty investigator with an acknowledged lack of sensitivity.” Sounds like a perfect fit for the actress, who told Movieline about her thrill-seeking nature last spring (she loves being waterboarded, fellas!). Look for Sackhoff’s character to appear during sweeps in November. [ EW ]
