Happy 55th Birthday, Tom Hanks! What’s His Best Onscreen Moment?

It hasn’t been the best of Julys for Tom Hanks — after all, Larry Crowne fizzled with both critics and audiences — but that should change today, if only because it’s his birthday! Hanx — as he’s known to his over 2 million Twitter followers — was born in Concord, Calif on July 9, 1955, and here at Movieline we encourage you to celebrate the joyous occasion the only way that seems appropriate: by remembering his best onscreen moment.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Sets Box Office High

It turns out fireworks aren’t the only type of explosions people enjoy on July Fourth Weekend. Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned

Friday Box Office: Transformers Continues Assault, Larry Crowne Flops

All hail Megatron! While Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned “just” $33.5 million on Friday night — 15 percent behind what Revenge of the Fallen grabbed on its first Friday in 2009 — the Michael Bay-directed explosion orgy is on track to bank $185 million through its first seven days. That might be disappointing, until you consider the foreign grosses, which are expected to top $200 million over the same timeframe. The outlook isn’t as rosy for Larry Crowne : the film crashed its moped into fourth place on the chart, and won’t top $20 million for the weekend. Your Friday box office is here.

The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to Larry Crowne

As hard as this may be to believe for some of you, it appears the critics love (or maybe the correct term is “hate less”) Michael Bay more than Tom Hanks. At least when it comes to Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Larry Crowne . The Hanks-directed comedy has been raked through the coals in reviews, and currently sports an even lower Rotten Tomatoes rating than Dark of the Moon . Perhaps it needed more Autobots. A Boy And His Horse: Watch the Sparkling Trailer for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse

When the trailer for The Adventures of Tintin was released online last month, it was met with some push-back from Steven Spielberg fans because of its Zemeckis-y tumble into the uncanny valley. Good thing, then, that Spielberg has another December release lined up to please his many devotees: the motion capture-free War Horse . The first trailer for the World War I drama about a boy (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse has arrived online, and you might want to bring a tissue to watch it ahead.

Bad Movies We Love: Punchline

Before you watch Tom Hanks cling to Julia Roberts and a deplorable moped in Larry Crowne this weekend, please take a moment to remember when he clung to Sally Field and a mic stand in the 1988 riot of confusion called Punchline . It’s about standup comedy. Which is funny! When it is funny. And Punchline ? Is not that word, which is repeated repeatedly in Punchline . That’s what qualifies it as a lovably bad movie, not to mention the most appropriately titled one of all time. Because it is not funny. But it is a joke. And I doubt you’ve heard this one before.

Tom Hanks Alludes to Toy Story 4 in Mumbly, Hanksian Way

In a BBC interview for his Larry Crowne press tour, Tom Hanks responded to a question about the possibility of a Toy Story 4 with the following mumblecore prose: “I think there will be, yeah. Yeah, yeah, they’re working on it now. There you go.” Nervous yet? Toy Story 3 concluded perfectly; a third sequel feels like a recipe for disaster, a sure way to turn the whole series into a Punchline . Stand clear, Sally Field. [ AICN ]

“Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, together at last!” That’s the marketing hook for Hanks’s film Larry Crowne, which he co-wrote and directed – or at least what’s supposed to be appealing about this. Then again, they were in Charlie Wilson’s War together, and that disappeared.
