Question Of The Day: Is Beyonce Gisele Knowles-Carter A Hero Of Modern Day Feminism???

Stans, your fearless leader King Bey speaks, listen up… At this point man, woman, and child has been captivated by Beyonce’s GQ cover Well just in case you thought Bey was gonna be all bikini and no brains, she takes the time speak on the power of the p-u-$-$-Y woman in today’s society. Get a load of this… Via Guardian On financial empowerment: “Equality is a myth, and for some reason everyone accepts that women don’t make as much money as men do,” she rails. “I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let’s face it, money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define value. They define what’s sexy. And men define what’s feminine. It’s ridiculous.” Preach sista! Knowles is right: it is ridiculous that American women earn 77 cents to every dollar earned by men. This is almost as ridiculous as, say, a self-professedly powerful female celebrity (“I’m more powerful than my mind can even digest,” announces Knowles) complaining about men defining sexiness in a men’s magazine in which she poses nearly nekkid in seven photos, including one on the cover in which she is wearing a pair of tiny knickers and a man’s shirt so cropped that her breasts are visible. These photos, incidentally, were taken by the bafflingly successful American photographer, Terry Richardson, a man with a penchant for highly sexualised photos of women and who has been repeatedly accused of sexual exploitation and misconduct by young female models, which Richardson has denied. To complain about the sexualization of women in men’s magazines may seem like complaining about the weather. But as Knowles rightly says in relation to the pay gap, the status quo should not just be shruggingly accepted if it is wrong. I never fail to be amazed at the high profile, often A-list women who celebrate their professional success by posing near nekkid on the covers of allegedly classy men’s magazines, such as Esquire and GQ, and these covers are, to my eyes, becoming increasingly close to freak flicks. Look at Bey tryna be all deep and stuff. Are you buying what she’s selling or do you think this all part of her plan to “re-invent” herself?? Image via Terry Richardson

For Discussion: Hampton University President Bans Cornrows & Dreads Because “Martin Luther King Didn’t Wear It”… Do You Agree?

Hampton University’s business school dean is standing by a controversial ban on dreadlocks and cornrows for some students . Male students enrolled in the school’s 5-year MBA program who take the seminar class cannot wear dreadlocks or cornrows in class. The ban, which began in 2001, has been controversial over the years. “I don’t think it shouldn’t matter what the hairstyle. It’s my life. I should be able to do whatever I want to do,” said incoming freshman Uriah Bethea, who wears dreadlocks and says he wouldn’t compromise his look for a class. Dean Credle disagrees and says when people criticize the ban for denying cultural aspects of style, he believes cornrows and dreadlocks have not been a historically professional look. “I said when was it that cornrows and dreadlocks were a part of African American history?” Credle added, “I mean Charles Drew didn’t wear, Muhammad Ali didn’t wear it. Martin Luther King didn’t wear it.” Some argue that because this is a private institution they are allowed to make up these rules and standards. Don’t like it? Leave and apply to another one. However, many people can land white-collar jobs without conforming to the “European” corporate standards that Hampton has apparently adhered to. Do you think this hair rule is fair or foul? Out Of Pocket: Mother Sends Her Child To School In Black Face, Then Pulls Him Out Of School When Principal Is Offended!

This lady has some nerve!!! Mother Pulls Her Son Out Of School After Sending Him To Class In Blackface A second grader was removed from school by his parents after the principal objected to him showing up in black face to do a presentation on the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Sean King had a vision for his project, part of “Wax Museum Day” at Meridian Ranch Elementary School in Peyton, Colo., said his mother Michelle King-Roca. “He said, ‘Mom, I want to wear a black suit because that’s what he wore, a black tie, a white shirt and also I want to do my face black and wear a mustache,” she told ABC affiliate KRDO. As parents and their pint-sized historical figures waited to file into a classroom on Wednesday, the principal asked King-Roca to remove her son’s make-up, she said. Instead, she ignored the request and waited for Sean’s presentation. King-Roca said she was then called to the principal’s office where she, her husband and Sean had a discussion with three school officials. Unsatisfied with the situation, King-Roca pulled her son out of school for the day. School officials could not be reached for comment, but blackface has historically been used by minstrel shows and burlesque for offensive caricatures of black people. This lady ain’t ISHT! She should be embarrassed, what part of “Blackface” is supposed to be cute or endearing??? SMH Image via KRDO/ABC News Source

The 9 Most Handsomely Stoic Pics From George Clooney’s Sudan Protest Arrest

Friday in Washington D.C., Secret Service agents arrested protesters gathered at the Sudanese Embassy to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian and food crisis in the North African nation. Among those charged: Members of Congress, Martin Luther King III, the president of the NAACP, journalist Nick Clooney, and his son, George Clooney , whose star power lent the protest an elevated media platform. Ol’ George has long been vocal in his political activism, using his celebrity to help shed light on humanitarian concerns, and as evidenced by these 9 most handsomely stoic of Clooney shots from today, he makes social activism look darn good. I’m partly jesting, of course. The suffering of the Sudanese people is far more significant an issue than pictures of a movie star stumping for on his day off. But to many, Clooney’s paparazzi-captured arrest is the first they’ll hear of the conditions in Sudan — or the culpability, as the protesters decried, of the Sudanese government in its own people’s suffering. Here’s a case in which celebrity power can be used to raise awareness on real issues and not, say, Kim Kardashian’s divorce. And it’s shots like these that sometimes get the world’s attention. So shall we take a cue from Clooney? Click for images . Before his arrest, Clooney spoke to journalists gathered outside the Sudanese Embassy. CNN — who identifies Nick Clooney as “Father of George Clooney” in their video coverage, incidentally — reports : “We are here really to ask two very simple questions,” Clooney said moments before his arrest. “The first question is something immediate — and immediately, we need humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.” The second thing, he said, “is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That’s all we ask.” [Photos via Getty Images] [ THR , CNN ]

Funeral Home Knows Who Leaked Whitney Houston’s Photos

It’s a dang shame when people can’t have privacy even after their death. Someone will always do something disrespectful which makes leaking Whitney Houston’s photo [in casket] a disgrace!! I’m furious that someone would have no regard for Whitney or her family. But thank goodness they found the person who sold the photos from the New Jersey funeral home  to the National Enquirer. SMH! Star Ledger reports: Carolyn Whigham, who owns and runs the funeral home on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and two local pastors said although they do know who took the photo, they would not identify the person. “It’s up to the Houston family to release the name,” said the Rev. Jethro James, pastor of Paradise Baptist Church. Whigham said that although the Houston family has closed its inquiry into the matter, the funeral home had not. She said she would consider taking legal action.

Jesus Take The Wheel: Gospel Singer Marvin Sapp Dating “Basketball Wives Of L.A.” Floozy

Looks like being a reality tv and Twitter freak has paid off for “Basketball Wives of L.A.” cast member Imani Showalter. According to HipHollywood reports : “Basketball Wives LA” star Imani Showalter has finally begun dating again. Showalter is the ex-fiancé of NBA star Stephen Jackson, whom she has three children with, and was quite vocal on season one about not having dated since the couple split. Things changed last fall when Showalter met Grammy-nominated gospel singer Marvin Sapp, who also pastors the Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapid, Michigan. Sapp was in Los Angeles judging Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound choir competition on Oct. 28 at the Staples Center and Showalter was introduced to him before the show. “The two exchanged information and immediately started corresponding after the show. A week or so later Marvin flew her to Grand Rapids to visit him and so she could experience his church,” said a source. The couple has been nearly inseparable since Showalter’s first visit, with Sapp flying Showalter out on various concert dates and preaching engagements. She traveled with the 44-year-old preacher to Chicago for a concert at New Life Covenant Church in late December. She was also by his side when he co-hosted the Stellar Gospel Awards in Nashville over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. “They’ve been spending quite a bit of time together. They’re definitely falling in love and I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up getting married,” the source added. Sapp is a father of three and a widower. His ex-wife Malinda died of colon cancer in 2010. While members of Sapp’s church were originally fine with their pastor dating the TV star, they recently became alarmed when Showalter tweeted photos of herself in a bikini to show off her recent weight loss on Twitter via @IamMelissaImani. “If she seriously wants to be with him and plans to become the First Lady of his church, the last thing she needs to be doing is tweeting risqué photos of herself,” the source concluded. “That’s just a big no-no!” Them church folk better back up offa Imani and her new bawwwwdy– don’t they know God don’t like ugly? Tyga Says Clearing MLK Sample ‘Not Really My Job’

‘That’s why you got lawyers and a label that’s supposed to do that, and I guess it just got overlooked,’ he tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Tyga on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Hip-hop was built on sampling. Beat breaks from old-school records like the Honeydrippers’ soul classic “Impeach the President” and the Incredible Bongo Band’s 1973 version of “Apache” have become the basis for a number of notable rap records. As essential as sampling is to hip-hop culture, it is also a vital part of the music business, and utilizing an unauthorized sample can be costly to an artist. Tyga had to learn the hard way when he failed to clear a sample of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech for the title track of his Careless World: The Rise of the Last King LP. Because Tyga and his label failed to clear the sample with MLK’s estate, the physical copies of his album were removed from stores when it was released last week, on February 21. “I felt like a lot of my fans and some of the younger generation know of Martin Luther King, but they don’t really understand his struggle or what he did and the message he was trying to give to younger people like myself,” Tyga explained on Wednesday’s (February 29) “RapFix Live.” “Me knowing that is why I used the phrase on that song, and I really wanted that part on the song. It was, like, 10 seconds. If I thought it was gonna jeopardize my first-week sales, I wouldn’t have used it. I used it because I wanted the message to get out.” Clearing samples isn’t a simple process, and there are quite a few legalities to consider. Some material is considered fair-use, but the guidelines that define what is and is not considered fair use aren’t always cut-and-dried. “I thought it would be like more public use, since it was on YouTube. I eventually knew you had to get it cleared with someone, but that’s not really my job to do,” Tyga said. “My job is to be the artist and really put all my effort into the music. That’s why you got lawyers and a label that’s supposed to do that, and I guess it just got overlooked.” The mishap has definitely cost Tyga a significant percentage of his first-week sales. He estimates that about 200,000 physical copies of his album were pulled from stores, and his entire sales tally came strictly from digital outlets. When it was all said and done, Carless World moved 61,000 digital copies and would have sold even more, if not for the sample snafu. “To hear that, to get that phone call, it’s like, you know, don’t bring me all the way to the finish line and drop the baton,” he said, disappointed. “I’ve been working so hard for this, and you guys couldn’t clear a little sample?” It is unclear where the blame lies, be it with Tyga’s camp, his Cash Money label or CM’s distributor Universal Republic. Whatever the case, the “Rack City” rapper is bummed that he had to compromise his artistic vision. “It was the fact that I wanted this Martin Luther King phrase on this part of the song and I couldn’t get it,” he said. “It’s all good. We gonna keep rolling with the punches, and it’s a great album.” Did you download Tyga’s new album? Share your reviews in the comments!
