On DVD: Why Parking is One of the Best Straight-to-DVD Releases of the Year

The new indie Parking could be pegged as a Taiwanese version of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours , but it’s something altogether odder, less a Road Runner comedy than a simulation of one of those all-night odysseys we’ve all had — when time evaporates and tiny logistical dilemmas drive us insane and eventually it’s morning and something about our lives is different.

New Boardwalk Empire Trailer: And Steve Buscemi as Tony Soprano

The first real trailer for the Martin Scorsese HBO series Boardwalk Empire has appeared online — first because mostly wordless and ethereal teaser trailers don’t count — and the enjoyment you get from it depends solely on your answer to one question: Did you always want to see Steve Buscemi as Tony Soprano? If the answer is yes, then good news! You’ll love this blood-soaked 90-second jaunt through 1920s Atlantic City. If the answer is no, however — well, at least there’s Michael Shannon.

Michael Jackson Fans To Have Access To Cemetery On Anniversary Of His Death

Forest Lawn cemetery is providing limited access to grounds, but not to mausoleum where King of Pop is buried. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Sony Fans all over the world are likely preparing for the one-year anniversary of ‘s death on June 25, and officials in Los Angeles are planning to help them commemorate the sad occasion. According to the Jackson’s fans are expected to get limited access to the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, in two weeks to mark the anniversary. In plans expected to be finalized this week, Jackson’s admirers will be allowed onto the grounds of the cemetery but not into the Great Mausoleum, where the singer’s body was interred in September. “We understand that Forest Lawn is working with the Jackson family for some kind of commemoration,” said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz. “We will be working closely with Forest Lawn to ensure the safety of those who want to pay their respects to Michael Jackson while ensuring the safety of others who are coming to the cemetery to pay respects to their loved ones.” Though fans will not be allowed in the Great Mausoleum, discussions are still ongoing about how close they will be allowed to get to the structure, which is also the final resting place of such Hollywood legends as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow and Red Skelton. “Basically, they will be viewing it from a distance,” Lorenz said. Jackson died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his rented Hollywood mansion. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled that the 50-year-old singer died of “acute Propofol intoxication” in combination with the use of sedatives. Authorities have claimed that his personal physician, cardiologist Conrad Murray, administered a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic to chronic insomniac Jackson in an attempt to help him get to sleep. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February in connection with Jackson’s death and has pleaded not guilty in the case. The doctor is out on $75,000 bail and faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Related Artists Michael Jackson

Paul Rudd Joined By Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel In ‘My Idiot Brother’

Rashida Jones and Emily Mortimer also join cast of comedy about a mama’s boy and his sisters. By Adam Rosenberg Paul Rudd Photo: Getty Images One of Paul Rudd ‘s next roles may be an “Idiot Brother,” but he sure has some beautiful sisters. Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer and Rashida Jones will join the actor in the upcoming comedy “My Idiot Brother,” about a grown mama’s boy (Rudd) who visits each of his three successful sisters, bringing with him happiness and disaster in equal measures. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Banks, Deschanel and Mortimer will play the three sisters. Banks is a single, career-minded journalist who is about to make it big; Deschanel is a bisexual woman who is having a hard time committing to her lovely girlfriend (Jones); and Mortimer is a Brooklyn mother who cares more about maintaining the illusion of a happy family than actually being happy. “My Idiot Brother” will be directed by Jesse Peretz with a script written by Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall. Jesse Peretz is probably known best for directing the Zach Braff/ Amanda Peet 2006 relationship comedy “The Ex.” He also directed Rudd in 2001’s “The Chateau.” Banks recently completed a multi-episode run on “30 Rock” that she will likely reprise next season. Deschanel, who is touring on She & Him’s new album, will next be seen in the 2011 David Gordon Green-directed Middle Ages stoner comedy “Your Highness.” Mortimer was most recently seen in Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” which hit DVD/Blu-ray this week. And Jones, who stars in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” also has a starring role in the upcoming David Fincher-directed Facebook pic, “The Social Network.” Rudd’s upcoming movie with Steve Carell, “Dinner for Schmucks,” is out on July 23. “My Idiot Brother” is currently targeted for a 2011 release. Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State Of Mind’ To Replace ‘New York, New York’ At Belmont Stakes

NYRA official calls it ‘the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City.’ By James Montgomery Jay-Z Photo: Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa In his massive hit “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z raps that he’s “the new Sinatra.” And it turns out he wasn’t joking. During Saturday’s 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes, “Empire” will be played as the horses are brought out onto the race track, replacing Sinatra’s classic “New York, New York,” according to a spokesperson for the New York Racing Association. “[It’s] the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City,” an NYRA official told The Associated Press. A spokesperson for the NYRA confirmed the change to MTV News. “New York, New York,” (or, as it’s actually called, “Theme From ‘New York, New York,’ “) is most closely associated with Sinatra, though it was actually written for — and first recorded by — Liza Minnelli for the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Sinatra recorded it for his 1980 album Trilogy: Past, Present And Future, and it became the last of his many signature numbers. Sinatra’s version has been performed as the field for the Belmont Stakes makes its way to the starting gate since 1997. Before that, the vaudeville tune “Sidewalks of New York” was performed. At Saturday’s race — which is held at Belmont Park on Long Island — teen singer Jasmine Villegas will perform “Empire.” Of course, this isn’t the first time the song has been performed at a sporting event. “Empire” became the unofficial theme song of the New York Yankees’ World Series run last year, with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys doing a version of the tune during Game Two of the Series. Later, Jigga did another take of the song during the Yankees’ championship celebration in Manhattan. Related Artists Jay-Z

Next on the 3-D Bandwagon: Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog will reportedly join Martin Scorsese in the race to become the first internationally recognized auteur to adopt 3-D. More jaw-dropping still: The Bavarian master/raconteur/adventurer will use the technology on a documentary about cave paintings . “I can have only three people with me, and I can use only lights which must not create temperature,” Herzog said of the filming process. “For each shot, because the technology is not really advanced, we had to build [our] own camera from zero using a specific configuration of lenses and mirrors. We are doing something nobody has done with 3-D.” Sounds great! Not so great: The odds of finding an art-house theater that can project it. [ Roger Ebert via The Guardian ]
