President Barack Obama’s approval rating is back to 50% for the first time in more than eight months, and he currently holds an edge against all the remaining Republican presidential candidates in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups, according to a new national survey. And a CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday also indicates that the GOP’s advantage on enthusiasm has been erased, and that the number of Americans who think things are going well in the country is on the rise. Six out of ten say things are going poorly in the country, but four out of ten say things are going well, up 15 points since November. “Does that mean it’s morning in America? It is for Democrats – a solid majority of them now say things are going well in the country. But overall, six in ten still have a gloomy outlook about the state of the country,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Optimism is on the rise among independent voters, with a notable increase among men as well, although a majority of both groups still think things are going poorly.” The rise of Americans who say things are going well appears to be helping the president, whose approval rating now stands at 50%, with 48% saying they disapprove of the job Obama’s doing in the White House. The president’s approval rating has edged up three points from last month and is up six points from November. The last time Obama’s approval rating was at 50% or above was last May, as a result of the killing of Osama bin Laden, and it stayed there for about a month before fading. “Independents now have a net-positive view of President Obama,” says Holland. “His approval rating has also reached 50% in the suburbs.” This is bodes well for the POTUS chances of re-election Looking ahead to November, the poll indicates that the president’s re-election chances are on the rise. In hypothetical matchups among registered voters, Obama holds a 51 margin over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, leads both former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Rep. Mitt Romney eked out a narrow win in Maine’s Republican caucuses, state party officials announced Saturday, beating Ron Paul by approximately three percent. The victory, however slim, offers the candidate a boost after three straight losses to Rick Santorum last week. How far it will carry him remains to be seen. The former Massachusetts governor earned 39 percent of the vote, while Paul took 36 percent, his strongest showing by share of the vote so far in the campaign. Paul also finished second to Romney in neighboring New Hampshire. Santorum got 18 percent of the vote in Maine and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has faded since winning South Carolina, had 6 percent. While the Maine results don’t immediately offer any convention delegates to Romney, they give him renewed momentum – at least according to Romney, who said: “The voters of Maine sent a clear message that it is past time to send an outsider to the White House, a conservative with a lifetime of experience in the private sector, who can uproot a culture of taxing, spending, borrowing and endless bureaucracy.” The Maine results are based on votes cast at 84 percent of municipal caucuses that have been conducted to date; the rest will be held by March 20. The state’s delegates to the Republican convention will be allocated in May. Because the results aren’t officially complete, Paul did not concede defeat. “It’s almost like we could call it a tie,” he told supporters .

That was especially true Tuesday (January 31), a picture-perfect day for voting in the Republican primary in the always-important swing state. With 50 delegates at stake in this winner-take-all state, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was tipped to win after spending nearly four times as much on negative ads (with the help of some SuperPac surrogates) than his rival Newt Gingrich. Despite the deluge of attack ads that blanketed the airwaves over the past few weeks, anesthesiology assistant student Ricky Varlotta, 24, said he saw a lot of the commercials but tried not to let it affect his decision. “I think it’s kind of ugly, and I don’t really agree with it all,” he said after casting his vote for Romney at the Kate Jackson Memorial Center in downtown Tampa. “If they think that’s the best way they can win, it says a lot about them.” Varlotta said a number of his friends with jobs voted early to make sure their ballots got counted, but that some are also so disenchanted with the political process that they’ve decided to just sit it out this time. “That’s their choice, and I think if you’re really concerned about it, you would come out and do something about it, and that’s why I’m out here voting.” This is the first presidential primary campaign that has felt the impact of SuperPac money, and from what the voters who spoke to MTV’s Power of 12 could tell, so far, it was not for the good. Though her chosen candidate, U.S. Representative Ron Paul, chose not to mount a campaign in Florida, Tessa McKenna, 21, singer for the “country shoegaze” band Sleepy Vikings, has been bowled over by all the negative Florida campaign ads she’s been inundated with when watching shows on Hulu. Because they don’t really educate her on the candidates, McKenna has also tuned out the din of the commercials. “In politics, I guess you never really know who’s right and who’s wrong,” she said. McKenna, who registered as a Republican at 16 when she got her license, felt that her personal politics don’t really match those of the party anymore, but she likes to stay politically involved and feels that Libertarian-leaning Paul is the “lesser of all evils” in this election cycle. “Kids really need to get out and make change for their country,” she said. Despite the more than $20 million spent in the primary on the spots, Amy Hightower said she’s never been influenced by them, because she’s more focused on the issues than the personalities. The young mother added that it has been hard lately being a Republican because she is pro-choice and for gay marriage and social programs. Despite those leanings, she cast an absentee ballot for Gingrich because, “He’s no bullsh–. He just says it how it is, and he’s not afraid of his flaws. With less than 24 hours to go before Tuesday’s primary , Romney was about to take the stage to the strains of one of his signature warm-up songs, Toby Keith’s “Made in America,” and the press corps knew what was going to happen next with their notebooks closed. “I’m gonna wake up in the middle of the night singing it,” the reporter sighed as the crowd in Pioneer Park filed in on a picture-perfect winter day. But for the writers and camera people slogging it out on the trail, it was “Groundhog Day” all over again: new town, same routine. While the patriotic country tune kept pumping, the crowd of several hundred suddenly turned around en masse as Romney’s bus pulled up about 15 minutes late. It seems that like college parties, for presidential candidates, it’s all about showing up just a bit late — and making a cool entrance. Fittingly, Romney referred to the Obama administration as the “groundhog presidency,” because, the former Massachusetts governor said, “He keeps saying the same thing, but nothing ever changes.” Romney talked about the trips he used to take with his family as a child — including a visit to Florida’s Cypress Gardens — but you could feel the press tuning out as they waited for the obligatory recitation of the candidate’s favorite lines from “America the Beautiful.” Following a loss in South Carolina last week, Romney was making his final appearances before Tuesday’s crucial Florida vote and he seemed loose and spirited, perhaps thanks to the comfortable lead he opened up against rival Newt Gingrich in the polls as the primary approached. President wants to require every student stay in school until graduation or they turn 18. But in a re-election year , the televised appearance before Congress cannot avoid being seen as a sales pitch to the nation for four more years, and on Tuesday night (January 24), during his third such speech, President Obama laid out his vision for the future should he get the job again in November. Touching on everything from education reform to a call for reviving American manufacturing, clean energy, immigration reform and a return to civility in Washington, Obama discussed his successes while challenging his Republican cohorts to pave the way for more opportunity for a middle class that has been hit hard by lingering economic uncertainty and unemployment. Obama opened by reminding voters that he recently welcomed home the last troops from Iraq and oversaw the killing of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden and many of al Qaeda’s top lieutenants. “Imagine what we could accomplish if we were to follow their example,” he said, praising America’s warriors for working together and not being divided by their personal ambitions. In a week when the Megaupload site was taken down , the president promised to stop the piracy of American movies, music and software overseas. With tens of millions out of work, Obama also said he wants to train 2 million workers with skills that will “lead directly to a job” through partnerships between community colleges and local businesses. In another step away from the Bush administration’s “No Child Left Behind” program, Obama praised the value of good teachers, saying, “Stop teaching to the test [and] replace teachers who just aren’t helping kids learn.” He also called on every state to require students to stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18. To further their education, Obama urged Congress to stop interest rates on student loans from doubling as scheduled in July, extending the tuition tax credit and double the number of work-study jobs in the next five years. In a firm challenge to colleges and universities constantly raising tuition rates, the president warned that if they can’t harness technology and redesign courses to help students finish more quickly, they will face less taxpayer funding. Speaking to the thousands of students brought here as children who aren’t American citizens, the president said they should not live under the threat of deportation because Congress can’t agree on a comprehensive immigration plan. “If election-year politics keeps Congress from acting on a comprehensive plan, let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs, start new businesses and defend this country,” he said. “Send me a law that gives them the chance to earn their citizenship. I will sign it right away.” Like so many presidents before him, Obama also called for a comprehensive energy strategy that’s “cleaner, cheaper and full of new jobs,” touting a supply of natural gas that could last the nation nearly 100 years and which could create 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. “I will not walk away from the promise of clean energy,” he said. “I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China or Germany because we refuse to make the same commitment here.” Earlier in the day, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, standing in front of a giant sign reading “Obama Isn’t Working,” offered a “pre-buttal” of the president’s address. Before hearing the speech, the former Massachusetts governor predicted it would be “more divisive rhetoric from a desperate campaigner in chief … it’s shameful for a president to use the State of the Union to divide our nation.” But, in closing, Obama returned to his theme of public service. “Those of us who’ve been sent here to serve can learn from the service of our troops. When you put on that uniform, it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white; Asian or Latino; conservative or liberal; rich or poor; gay or straight,” said the commander in chief who ended the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy . “When you’re marching into battle, you look out for the person next to you, or the mission fails,” he continued. “When you’re in the thick of the fight, you rise or fall as one unit, serving one nation, leaving no one behind. So it is with America. Each time I look at that flag, I’m reminded that our destiny is stitched together like those 50 stars and those 13 stripes. No one built this country on their own. This nation is great because we built it together. This Nation is great because we worked as a team. This nation is great because we get each other’s backs. Newt “fake a$$ conservative” Gingrich , who has been married three times and apparently cheated on his wives, shuts down the allegations from his ex-wife Marianne that he wanted an “open marriage”: Newt Gingrich opened a pivotal Republican presidential debate with a fiery attack on the media for publishing stories regarding new allegations made against him by an ex-wife. Gingrich assailed, in no uncertain terms, CNN moderator John King for opening the debate by asking Gingrich to answer allegations made by his ex-wife, Marianne, in an interview with ABC News, saying the then-speaker of the House asked to engage in an “open marriage,” or else he would file for divorce. “I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that,” Gingrich said, earning wild applause from the audience. “To take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine.” Gingrich disputed the allegations as “false,” and his three fellow Republicans onstage resisted piling on. (“Let’s get on to the real issues,” former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said.) It was a spirited opening to a debate that capped one of the most politically tumultuous days of the 2012 cycle.
