Great Moments In ‘Les Miserables’ Mania: Katie Holmes Sings ‘On My Own’ On ‘Dawson’s Creek’

With this season’s Les Misérables mania in swing, many a moviegoer has been obsessing over those familiar songs and weepy French revolutionary dramatics in anticipation of the Christmas Oscar pic. I’ve been thinking a lot about the classic Les Mis tune “On My Own,” about one girl’s unrequited love for a boy who loves another — but not as sung by Eponine about Marius and his beloved little songbird Cosette. I’m talking Joey Potter’s Miss Windjammer rendition from season one of Dawson’s Creek . If you were a teenage girl growing up in the late ’90s, chances are you watched the seminal WB series. And if you had any sense at all, you identified not with wannabe Spielberg Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), adorably feckless Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), or the hot-but-troubled new girl in town Jen Lindley ( Michelle Williams ), but with the tomboyish girl-next-door, Joey Potter ( Katie Holmes ). So when Joey reluctantly entered the local Miss Windjammer beauty contest (for college tuition money!) and warbled the Les Miserables ballad “On My Own” — prompting stupid Dawson to see past Jen and notice Joey for the first time ever — you LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT. Joey was the Eponine of Capeside, Massachusetts, and Dawson was her Marius, and this Eponine was finally getting her man. I’ll admit with no small shred of embarrassment: I’ve probably seen Joey sing “On My Own” dozens of times in my life. As soon the Internet invented YouTube, I found it and watched it again. (There was that one lost evening when I fell down a k-hole of Joey-Pacey YouTube videos, but that’s another story.) I’d never seen Les Miserables onstage, so Dawson’s Creek marked my introduction to the soulful, wistful “On My Own” — and in the hazy euphoria of nostalgia, despite Dawson’s terrible ’90s mane and Joey’s reedy baby voice, I still think back on it fondly. Clearly Holmes doesn’t hold a candle to a performer like Samantha Barks, the professional West End veteran who plays Eponine and absolutely slays “On My Own” in Tom Hooper’s film adaptation. But the reason why both versions work — Barks as Eponine in the familiar Les Mis tradition, and Holmes as Joey singing to Capeside’s finest — is that they both hit that Some Kind of Wonderful sweet spot. Les Mis the musical was written over a decade before Dawson’s Creek and the John Hughes gem, and Victor Hugo’s novel 130 years before, but they share the same essential DNA: The overlooked girl-next-door pining for the boy who’s too blind to see, who loves him so much she’ll help him woo the girl of his dreams — even if it kills her. This is, incidentally, why Some Kind Of Wonderful is so great; Watts gets her happy ending . And a pair of diamond earrings. Michelle Kosilek Wants Facial Hair Removed as Part of Taxpayer-Funded Gender Reassignment

Convicted killer Michelle Kosilek’s facial hair was the subject of a hearing in a case where a judge has already ordered Massachusetts to pay for her sex-reassignment surgery. The attorneys for Kosilek argued before Chief US District Court Judge Mark Wolf that her electrolysis treatments should continue despite Department of Corrections resistance. It was not clear whether Wolf would decide today whether to compel the department to continue with the beard removal treatment that stopped after six weeks. According to Kosilek’s attorney, Fran Cohen, the removal – part of her male-to-female transformation that includes a sexual reassignment surgery – was incomplete when halted. Robert Dierner, a medical expert who met with Kosilek and determined that electrolysis wasn’t necessary, testified that Kosilek appeared to exaggerate her facial hair growth. For example, Dierner testified, during one evaluation, Kosilek said going several days without shaving would result in a full beard. “I didn’t think that was possible,” Dierner testified on behalf of the state Department of Correction. Kosilek strangled his wife, Cheryl, in Mansfield, Mass., in 1990 and dumped her body in a car at the Emerald Square Mall in North Attleborough. Kosilek then fled to New York State before being arrested. Kosilek, who was convicted as Robert Kosilek but appeared at trial dressed like a woman, legally changed her name to Michelle in 1993 and has been living as a woman in an all-male prison in Norfolk since. In September, Wolf issued a landmark ruling that taxpayers must pay for Kosilek to undergo sex-reassignment surgery for a transsexual prison inmate. The surgery, he ruled, is the only adequate care for his serious mental illness, gender identity disorder. Kosilek first sued the Department of Correction in 2000, arguing that its refusal to pay for a sex-change violates her Eighth Amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment. The department has consistently opposed Kosilek’s request. Wolf ruled that the DOC violated the Eighth Amendment.

‘Airbrushing History’: Barack Takes Mittens Out During The Final Debate

“We’ve been through tough times, but we always bounce back because of our character.” Barack threw a lot of one-liners during tonight’s debate that are sure to go down in history. And on a night when Robney needed to question Barack, he just proved to be a copycat. Money Mitt kept trying to shift the conversation back to education and the high unemployment rate during the entire debate and in the end, Romney adopted Obama’s foreign policy and looked like an amateur who knew nothing about what it really takes to sit in that chair in the Oval Office! Mexico wasn’t mentioned once in tonight’s debate but China came up in regards to trade and finances. Barack didn’t hesitate to call out Romney on his shady relationship with them either when he said, “If it were up to Romney we’d be buying Chinese cars today, not selling cars to the Chinese”… According to CNN: A forceful President Barack Obama put Republican challenger Mitt Romney on the defensive on foreign policy issues on Monday night, scoring a solid victory in their third and final debate just 15 days before Election Day. Obama displayed the experience of a commander-in-chief in explaining U.S. policy under his leadership and attacking the views and proposals of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor with little experience on overseas issues. Romney applauded Obama’s efforts to kill Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders but insisted that “we can’t kill our way of this mess.” Rather, he pushed for “a comprehensive strategy” to curb violent extremism in the Middle East. “The key is the pathway is to get the Muslim world to reject extremism on its own,” Romney said, proposing U.S. policies to promote economic development, better education, gender equity and to help create institutions. However, he was unable to express any significant policy difference with Obama on how that would happen. Obama responded by criticizing his opponent on a host of foreign policy issues — claiming Romney had favored positions that would have hurt the United States or offered sometimes contradictory views. “What we need to do with respect to the Middle East is strong, steady leadership — not wrong and reckless leadership that is all over the map,” the president said. Romney also repeatedly tried to shift the discussion to his strongest issue — the continued high unemployment and slow economic recovery under Obama — arguing that a strong foreign policy and national defense depends on a strong economy. The president shot back that Romney was basing his comparison on military capability on outdated models, saying America had fewer naval ships than years earlier but also has fewer bayonets. “The question is not a game of ‘Battleship’ where we’re counting ships. It’s a matter of capability,” Obama said. Romney’s economic plan seeks trillions in tax cuts while increasing defense spending, which would increase the deficit, Obama said The candidates were at odds as well about how Washington should ultimately respond to the continuing violence in Syria. We’re pretty sure Mitt’s voting for Barack tomorrow! What were your favorite cracks on Mittens that Obama whipped at the GOP candidate tonight? Photos via gettyimages

Around the ‘net… Romney Criticizes Anti-Islam Film; Backs Off Earlier White House Criticism “I think it’s dispiriting sometimes to see some of the awful things people say,” the former Massachusetts governor told George Stephanopolous on Good Morning America Friday. “And the idea of using something that some people consider sacred and then parading that out a negative way is simply inappropriate and wrong. And I wish people wouldn’t do it.” He also said the First Amendment protects that free speech. He added that he and the White House were now more in sync over his criticism about the statement released by the U.S. embassy in Cairo when protests began earlier this week. The statement condemning the film lead him to criticize the Administration and caused backlash against him by both Democrats and some Republicans. “What I said was exactly the same conclusion the White House reached, which was that the statement was inappropriate.  That’s why they backed away from it as well,” said Romney, THR reports . Still Heads to U.S. Theaters The Toronto International Film Festival romance pic starring James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold will get a release some time in 2013. In the feature, the two actors play a couple in their later years. He sets out to build a more suitable home for his ailing wife and quickly is blindsided by local building codes and bureaucratic officials as his wife becomes increasingly ills and a flurry of orders to stop building, Variety reports . Taylor Swift Purchases Cape Cod Mansion… Next Door to Conor Kennedy!

Oh yes. It’s safe to say things are getting very serious very quickly between Taylor Swift and her new boyfriend, the 18-year old son of Robert Kennedy Jr. Not long after Swift and Conor Kennedy became an official couple, the singer introduced the famous offspring to her parents in Nashville – and now she’s making a move toward his family. A major one. As first reported by People , Taylor has purchased a $4.9 million mansion in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, right across the street from Conor’s grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. It has seven bedrooms, five bedrooms and its view looks like this: The residence is located on right on a private beach and comes with a guesthouse and a private road with seasonal security. Asked by members of the press this month how she’d react if Swift actually married Conor, Ethel replied: “We should be so lucky!” It may be a tad premature, but this is a significant step in that fantasy actually becoming a reality.

GTFOHWTBS: Massachucetts Town Wants To Fine People $20 Per Word For Public Profanity

Fawk that isht! Massachucetts Town Votes To Fine People For Public Profanity Washing one’s mouth out with soap may not be a modern day answer to curbing foul-mouthed language, but officials in one Massachusetts town say taking a bite out of the wallet might be an incentive to keep it clean. The Middleborough town meeting was to vote Monday on a proposal from the police chief to impose a $20 fine on public profanity. Supporters say the proposal isn’t meant to censor casual or private conversations, but instead crack down on loud profanity in downtown areas and public parks. Middleborough has had a bylaw against public profanity since 1968. But it’s rarely, if ever, been enforced, because it essentially makes swearing a crime. The new proposal would decriminalize profanity, allowing police to write tickets as they would for traffic violations. There is no f**king chance in hell that this muhfuggin bullisht actually gets passed, is there?? Would you like this law in your city? Image via Shuttershock Source

Hip-Hop Clichés That Made MCs Stars, But Struggle Rappers Abuse

You have heard the annoying clichés from up and coming rap artists before. “My debut is going to be a classic just like so and so” or “The drug game wasn’t appealing to me anymore.” Truth is these scenarios did work for small fraction of MCs, such as Nas and Jay-Z, respectively. The problem is that their unique entries into the Hip-Hop game are too often mimicked by hapless rappers… Continue
