On The Come Up: From Homeless To Harvard, This Kid Deserves Major Props!

This is a powerful story, and if this kid can achieve what he has, there isn’t anything that you can’t achieve. Homeless High School Student David Boone Accepted To Harvard David Boone had a system. There wasn’t much the then-15-year-old could do about the hookers or drug deals around him when he slept in Artha Woods Park. And the spectator’s bench at the park’s baseball diamond wasn’t much of a bed. But the aspiring engineer, now 18 and headed to Harvard University in the fall, had no regular home. Though friends, relatives and school employees often put him up, there were nights when David had no place to go, other than the park off Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. So he says he made the best of those nights on the wooden bench. His book bag became his pillow, stuffed with textbooks first — for height, he says — and papers on top for padding. In the morning, David would duck into his friend Eric’s house after Eric’s parents left early for work so he could shower and dress before heading to class at Cleveland’s specialized MC2STEM High School. David expects to graduate from there next month as salutatorian of the new school’s first graduating class. “I’d do my homework in a rapid station, usually Tower City since they have heat, and I’d stay wherever I could find,” he said. David says that giving up would have left him stuck in a dead-end life, so it was never an option. “I didn’t know what the results of not giving up were going to be, but it was better than nothing and having no advantages,” he said. “I wanted to be in a position to have options to do what I want to do.” David was born to a young mother, who divorced his father when David was a little boy. When David was a student at Sunbeam Elementary, medical problems put him in the hospital regularly, said Mary Solomon-Gatson, the school’s former nurse. Even then, she said, he impressed her as a bright child. He was one of the school’s few students to pass the state’s achievement tests, she said, despite missing classes constantly. Even at that school, which covers kindergarten through eighth grade, David said he was pushed to join gangs. He refused, fueling tension with gang members. Once, he says, they tried to jump him. Because his older sister dated a member of a rival gang, he said, the situation was that much worse. “There was a lot of pressure for me to join. That was the life they lived, so it was the only life to live and they thought if I wasn’t with them, I was against them,” David said. In the summer after eighth grade, he said, gang members shot at his family’s Eddy Road home. He attributes that mostly to the issue of his sister’s boyfriend, but his whole family was affected. No one was injured, but the family split up. His mother went to stay with a boyfriend, he said. His three sisters went to stay with friends and he went to his friend Eric’s house — for a while. Though Eric’s family took him in for a short time, he said, he couldn’t stay there permanently. “We’ve been through a lot as a family,” said his mom, Moneeke Davis. “There’s been a lot of challenges and adversity.” But she said David was determined to build a better life. “He’s so focused, so driven and so humble,” Davis said, adding that she is grateful for the people “the Lord put in [David’s] path” to help him. Sometimes he stayed with Solomon-Gatson, sometimes with Eric, sometimes with other friends and relatives, and sometimes in the park. “It’s a lot to take someone in, particularly a teenage boy,” David said. “I was kind of upset that no one would, but I was never upset at any one person.” Though the park baseball diamond was mostly isolated from crime in other parts of the park, he soon decided it wasn’t safe to sleep there. He says he developed a new plan: When he wasn’t in school, he would sleep in parks during the day and roam and study at night, so he’d be awake and alert to trouble. “If you sleep in the daytime in the park, people don’t bother you,” he said. “You’re just taking a nap. It’s acceptable.” In between studying at Tower City, he’d work at a now-closed boutique, he said, to buy food. Before leaving Sunbeam, David had applied to several district specialty high schools, including the John Hay School of Science and Medicine. But he was intrigued after attending a meeting at the Cleveland Public Library about the newly created MC2STEM High School, which teaches science, technology, engineering and math with a hands-on, projects-based program. David likes tinkering and learns best by pulling things apart to see how they work. When he was 6, he says, he took apart the family television set and put it back together in working order. His favorite part of school, pre-high school, was an eighth-grade project about solar electricity. That let him dive in and make plans for a combined solar and wind farm that he was excited about. MC2STEM caught his eye because it would allow him to work on projects at the Great Lakes Science Center, with General Electric at the Nela Park campus and with companies across the region. With a nudge from Solomon-Gatson, he applied and was accepted. Instantly, he was hooked by an early project on alternative energy. That covered material he had worked on for his solar and wind farm project and had him working on it with GE engineers. MC2STEM also pushed him — hard. “They don’t accept mediocrity,” he said. The school requires students to master a subject before moving on to the next. In the first two years, students receive an A in a class or an incomplete and keep taking the class until they earn an A. MC2STEM also has longer school days and a year-round schedule with classes most of the summer. Through the school, David has worked at Lockheed Martin and Rockwell Automation and landed a spot last year at the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Like many students at MC2STEM, he took classes at Cleveland State University this spring, in subjects such as differential equations, calculus-based physics and an introduction to computer science. MC2STEM Principal Jeff McClellan praised David’s appetite for learning and his ability to connect with people who can help him learn what he needs. “If you tell him that ‘a person can help you with your calculus, make the call,’ he’ll do it,” McClellan said. “He was getting up at 5 a.m. and coming in early to get caught up on his work.” Over time, McClellan learned one of the other reasons that David was coming in early was because he was bouncing from place to place to place. So McClellan and his wife took in David. He lived with them for more than a year — parts of 10th and 11th grade. “My wife and I talked it over and said that we can’t do everything for everybody,” McClellan said. “But we could help him. It was just the right thing to do. He needed somewhere to go.” David is now living with his friend Eric again but said he was thankful to McClellan for the home when he needed one and for continuing to offer help after he left. “There’s nothing I can’t call him for,” David said. Now the school and the district can brag about David’s success. He turned down places like Yale and Princeton to go to Harvard, where he will study engineering and computer science. He also landed a Gates Millennium Scholarship, which will cover all of his college costs not covered by other aid. “It wasn’t all easy,” David said. “It wasn’t all fun and games. It was a lot of hard work and I just made it happen.” What an amazing story. It is kind of hard to understand why his mother or one of his sisters wasn’t able to care for him — but times have been hard and when they are that hard people really struggle to take care of themselves, so much so that they can’t take care of others. Massachusetts under the microscope

Mitt Romney Clinches Republican Presidential Nomination; Can He Beat President Obama?

Having effectively won through attrition weeks ago, Mitt Romney officially wrapped up the Republican nomination for president last night with a win in the Texas primary. Romney’s win put an end to the GOP primary as the former Massachusetts Governor began to ramp up his general election message against President Obama. Just after 9 p.m., he Tweeted: “#1144. Thank You. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to prosperity.” Despite surpassing the 1,144 delegate threshold, it was just a token evening for the presumptive nominee, whose rivals exited one by one over a month ago. Only Ron Paul is still fighting for delegates. With the White House out of reach, he seeks a prominent role at the party’s convention and in shaping its future. Romney didn’t make a speech last night, but the win was nonetheless symbolic, making him the first Mormon to be a major-party candidate for the presidency. The timing couldn’t have been better, as he is now being treated as an equal to Obama by the national media in what is sure to be a very close 2012 election. He’s pulled almost even with the president in voter surveys, currently trailing by just two percentage points in aggregated national polls, 45.6 to 43.6 percent. Romney probably has a 50-50 chance of being the 45th President of the United States. He’ll distance himself from Donald Trump if he’s smart. Just saying. If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?

Exclusive: Drake Has A ‘Good’ Feeling About Justin Bieber Collabo

Toronto MC talks up the Believe track ‘Right Here’ and details his plans to hit the studio after his Club Paradise Tour. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Drake has a jam-packed schedule taking his Club Paradise Tour city to city, but the Toronto rap star still manages to find time to record, especially since he has a studio on his tour bus. Right after Club Paradise’s last show in Boston, Massachusetts, Drizzy will begin recording new music, possibly for his next album. “I’m really excited to start working on new music. I start like June 18,” Drake told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway when the two met backstage in Houston on May 17. “I got a studio bus out here so me and 40 started working on a couple joints the other night. Just getting warmed up,” he continued. “I did like the ‘Amen’ track for Meek [Mill] and I did ‘No Lie’ for 2Chainz.” Fans have already raved over Drizzy’s performance on both “No Lie” and “Amen,” which appears on the Philadelphia MC’s recently released Dream Chasers 2 mixtape . Still, the Young Money star has a few more collaborations that fans will hear in the coming weeks, one of them being French Montana’s “Pop That.” “I’m on French Montana’s single; me, him, Ross and Wayne, which is a crazy lineup,” Drake said. “And then on Justin Bieber ‘s record. I wrote a song for him as well.” At the time of the interview, Drake wasn’t sure of the name of the Bieber record or if the song would even be included on Justin’s upcoming Believe LP. “Awkward Justin Bieber moment,” Drizzy joked after pondering the very slim chance that he wouldn’t make the final cut. “Yeah, we’ll see. It’s a good song though; produced by Hit-Boy.” Well, Drake doesn’t have to worry. On Monday, the Biebs unveiled his Believe track list , and his fellow Canadian does appear on the song “Right Here.” We have no reason to doubt Drake’s word about “Right Here,” but we’ll all will just have to wait until June 19 when Believe is released to finally hear it. Bobby Brown Says Goodbye To Whitney Houston On New Song

Houston’s ex-husband debuts ‘Don’t Let Me Die’ during a visit to the ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.’ By Nadeska Alexis Bobby Brown appears on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Wednesday Photo: NBC Since Whitney Houston passed away in February, her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, has only opened up about her death in one interview on the “Today” show, but during a Wednesday night appearance on the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” the R&B singer paid tribute to Houston with a new song. “Don’t Let Me Die” finds Brown musing on mistakes he made during his relationship with Houston. “I didn’t realize that every breath I took was from you,” he sang, dressed in black, “You were my air.” The new song will be featured on Brown’s upcoming album The Masterpiece, set to debut on June 5. It will be his first album since 1997’s Forever. “I guess I [messed] up pretty bad/ I didn’t know who you were/ I didn’t know what we had,” Brown continued to sing. “Now I’m stuck living in the past/ Trying to get the pieces back/ But I guess now you’re gone.” Brown’s tumultuous marriage to Houston was well-documented on their reality TV series “Being Bobby Brown,” which showed the couple’s difficult battle with drugs. When Houston died, she left behind 19-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, who reportedly has a strained relationship with her dad. During his visit to the “Today” show in April, Brown defended himself against constant accusations that he was responsible for Houston’s drug use, saying she was using drugs before they met in 1991. “I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all,” Brown told “Today” host Matt Lauer .”It’s just, it’s just unexplainable, how one could [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone.” Houston’s family — including daughter Bobbi Kristina, brother Gary Houston and sister-in-law Patricia Houston — are set to appear in an upcoming Lifetime reality series . Donna Summer, ‘Queen Of Disco,’ Dead At 63

‘Love to Love You Baby’ singer dies on Thursday (May 17) after long battle with cancer. By Gil Kaufman Donna Summer Photo: Fotos International/Getty Images Donna Summer, the powerhouse singer known as the “Queen of Disco,” died on Thursday (May 17) in Florida after a battle with cancer, according to TMZ . The five-time Grammy winner who set dance floors ablaze in the 1970s with such anthems as “Last Dance,” Hot Stuff” and her most iconic hit, “I Feel Love,” was 63-years-old. In a genre that was filled with many one-hit wonders and fly-by-night studio acts that were unable to keep the disco inferno stoked after scoring hits, Summer was a lifer, consistently charting even after the dance craze faded in the late 1970’s. For photos of Donna Summer through the years, click here. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Summer set herself apart with strong vocals backed by her songwriting skills, as well as some creative luck in hooking up with producers/songwriters Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. The pair helped her pumped out hit-after-hit and provided her with a sensual, almost ethereal sound on tracks such as “I Feel Love,” which seduced both on and off the dance floor. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts to a butcher father and schoolteacher mother, Summer showed promise as a singer from an early age. She made her public debut at age 10 at her church when the scheduled singer didn’t show up and she filled in. After appearing in a number of musicals and plays in high school and singing with the psychedelic rock band The Crow, she joined the cast of German production of the musical “Hair” in 1967 at age 18. She stayed in Munich after the show’s run ended and recorded her debut solo album there in 1974, Lady of the Night . Though it spawned a hit overseas with “The Hostage,” she didn’t crack the U.S. market until a year later with the song that would make her an international superstar, the seductive disco anthem, “Love to Love You Baby.” The tune she created with Moroder and Bellotte was a #2 hit in the U.S. and landed her an American record deal with the it label of the era, Casablanca Records. The 17-minute club remix of the single, which featured such real-sounding ecstatic moans that some radio stations refused to play it, became a huge hit and set a new standard for sophisticated arrangements in a genre often marked by cheesy sounding instrumentation and lazy songwriting. She released two albums in 1976, A Love Trilogy , which featured the nearly 18-minute epic “Try Me (I Know We Can Make It Work),” and the winter/spring/summer/autumn-themed Four Seasons of Love . In a singles genre where the song as the thing, Summer continued to put out consistently artistic albums, including 1977’s I Remember Yesterday , which featured the song that would secure Summer’s place at the top of the disco diva pecking order, “I Feel Love.” That hypnotizing song was also the first one recorded with a backing track made up entirely of synthesized sounds. This being the era of excess, her second 1977 album, Once Upon A Time , was another concept disc, this one retelling the Cinderella story in the disco era on tracks like “Once Upon a Time,” “Fairy Tale High,” “Working the Midnight Shift” and “Queen for a Day.” She transitioned into acting in 1978 in the disco comedy “Thank God It’s Friday,” which earned her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal for the hit “Last Dance.” By 1979’s two-album Bad Girls she was indisputably a star, logging six weeks at #1 and scoring hits with the sexy “Bad Girls” and more rock-oriented “Hot Stuff.” When Summer released a double-album greatest hits disc later that year she became the first artists to ever score three #1 albums in a row with double-disc releases. She went on to score hits with a Barbra Streisand duet and moved over to the then-new Geffen Records, where her success began to wane a bit. By 1983, she’d moved past the disco sound and into a synth-heavy R&B/new wave sound with the female empowerment anthem “She Works Hard For the Money.” That song, though, would effectively mark the end of her hit-making days. Summer continued to release albums through the late 1980’s, but was never again able to capture her disco peak. In fact, by the end of the decade she spoke out against the “sinful” nature of her disco hits and turned her back on her earlier material and focused on painting. After a 17-year break, she released her first studio album of original material, Crayons , in 2008. Related Photos Donna Summer: The Queen Of Disco Related Artists Donna Summer
