R.I.P. David R. Ellis: ‘Snakes On A Plane’ Director, Action Vet Dead At 60

Director David R. Ellis has died, reports Deadline , on the cusp of production for his next film, the live-action anime adaptation,  Kite . The actor, turned stuntman, turned second unit whiz, turned feature director, who made his directorial debut with 1996’s Homeward Bound 2 , before finding his niche with crowd-pleasing genre fare from Final Destination 2 to Snakes on a Plane and last year’s Shark Night 3D , was 60 years old at the time of his death. Ellis may have specialized in studio B-movies as a director (he also helmed Cellular , Asylum , and The Final Destination ), but he established an extensive body of second unit work on other filmmakers’ movies, including The Matrix Reloaded , Waterworld , Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , The Perfect Storm , Master and Commander , and the upcoming 47 Ronin and R.I.P.D. Prior to his directing work, Ellis racked up an impressive filmography as a stunt player, with credits running the gamut including Smokey and the Bandit , Lethal Weapon , Road House , and the motorcycle stunts in Game of Death . Last year at Comic-Con, Movieline caught up with Ellis on the Shark Night 3D promo tour where he played a round of My Favorite Scene. ” The Birds !” Ellis said, picking the classic Hitchcock moment – coincidentally, one riffing on the creature horror theme. “The birds attacking Tippi Hedren is a great scene.” Cause of death is unknown; read more on Ellis’s passing here . I just love the fact that the same filmmaker gave us both of these cinematic gifts in one career. R.I.P. [ Deadline ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Joss Whedon Trolls ‘Star Wars’ Fans, Talks Wasp In ‘Avengers’

In our pre-Mayan apocalypse era, when you want to ensure that whatever you say is disseminated far and wide faster than the time it takes to tweet ‘DID YOU SEE THIS ###$$!!!’ the best advice is to master the subtle art of trolling with useful facts. Case in point: Joss Whedon , who screened The Avengers and afterward, sat for one of Jeff Goldsmith’s Q&As Tuesday night at the Director’s Guild of America in Hollywood. During a discussion that also included some tantalizing non-reveals about elements that almost, but didn’t make it into The Avengers , he decided to troll the entire universe by insisting that Star Wars: A New Hope is better than The Empire Strikes Back . Kind of! Slashfilm was on the scene and reports this comment: “I still believe that even though The Empire Strikes Back is better in innumerable ways than Star Wars , Star Wars wins,” Whedon said, “because you can’t end a movie with Han frozen in carbonite. That’s not a movie, it’s an episode.” Okay, after putting my fist back down and unclenching it, I see his point. Empire began what has become the most troubling aspect* of Hollywood’s obsession with trilogies; a stand alone first installment, with two subsequent films that work better as a duo rather than taken individually. A true trilogy ought to either feature three films that either work as stand alone stories linked by a common theme, or two cliffhangers in a row with resolution coming in the third movie. Empire , and to a lesser extent Jedi , manage the trick with some subtlety, but there’s a short line between them and Matrix Reloaded / Revolutions . And we must never forget Matrix Reloaded , lest we repeat the mistakes of the past. Anyway, those comments came during a circumspect discussion of how he envisions the Avengers franchise, and should probably be taken to mean that we won’t be getting an Avengers ‘trilogy.’ Good news, that, because instead we’re getting the crazy experiment that is the Marvel movie universe. Slashfilm ‘s recap is worth a full read, particularly because it includes more confirmation that the inclusion of the Wasp was indeed considered in the event ScarJo wasn’t available — interesting in light of recent rumors that Lizzy Caplan , who stars with Jesse Bradford in the Marvel short Item 47 , is a potential candidate to play the diminutive mutant. Read the whole thing here . * Second most troubling: claiming that three thematically unrelated sequels constitute a trilogy I AM LOOKING AT YOU DIE HARD . Johnny Depp On A ’21 Jump Street’ Cameo: ‘I’m In!’

‘I’ve said I’m into it, but no one’s actually approached me,’ Depp tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Johnny Depp Photo: MTV News Here’s what we know: Jonah Hill has penned a cameo for Johnny Depp in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of “21 Jump Street.” Depp, who starred as Officer Tom Hanson in the ’80s TV series on which Hill’s flick is based, is open to the idea of popping up in the movie , telling MTV News last year, “If we find the right thing to do, it could be very funny.” Here’s what we don’t know: Why haven’t Hill and Depp been in contact about the possibility? Because as we learned while Depp was promoting “The Tourist” in Paris last week, he hasn’t heard a peep about “21 Jump Street.” “I’ve said I’m into it, but no one’s actually approached me,” he told us. As recently as last month, Hill said he’s still hoping Depp will sign up for a part — “Just do it, dude. Don’t be an a–hole,” he joked — but as of now, Depp remains in the dark. “Call him. I’m in. I’m in,” Depp said. “I think it’d be pretty easy.” There’s no word if Depp would reprise his role as Hanson or step into a new part, but Hill has told us in the past the film won’t be a spoof of the original show but a “a hard-core, R-rated movie” that focuses on the fish-out-of-water scenario of cops returning to high school to pose as students in the name of undercover investigative work. “What happens is, they get caught up in the high school-ness as opposed to the police work,” he said last year. “And whenever they get too caught up in the high school drama, police work comes in. And whenever they get too caught up in the police work, high school drama comes in.” Check out everything we’ve got on “21 Jump Street.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . DJ Khaled Teases Lil Wayne Collabo On We The Best Forever

‘When I work with Wayne, I always get the most classic verses,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes DJ Khaled Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive If DJ Khaled’s records are movies, then the Miami-based radio jock is a director. And like all good cameramen, he wants to keep his script closely guarded. His next project is his first for Cash Money Records, and he’s looking to kick things off with a lead single that would put “The Matrix Reloaded” opening scene to shame. “I don’t want to tell you the name of the artist yet,” he told Mixtape Daily. “I want people to be surprised. But I have my first single.” It might not be that hard to figure out who he could have in store for the record. He’s new to Cash Money, and a certain Cash Money artist was recently released from prison. Plus, the two have a penchant for making smash hits together. “I can tell you for a fact that me and Wayne did work together,” Khaled said. “I’m not gonna lie, he’s on it. We’ll let that one go.” The album We the Best Forever marks Khaled’s major-label debut, and he’s hoping to make major moves with the set. In the past, he’s delivered two big hits on cue with each release. But now, he’s planning to stretch his LP out like an outfielder reaching over the fence to steal a home run. “Bigger team, and they’re letting me do what I want,” he said. So far, he’s 75 percent done with the project, which will also feature Chris Brown and Keyshia Cole on one record (he called it “Olympic torch music” because it’s so inspirational), Cee Lo Green (“Sleep When I’m Gone”) and, of course, Weezy. “When I work with Wayne, I always get the most classic verses, like ‘We Taking Over,’ ” Khaled said. “And this verse with my new one, it’s … I’m not even gonna lie: It’s amazing. “It’s one of them anthems that I do,” he added. “The streets are gonna embrace it on another level. When you hear it you’re gonna be like, ‘This is what I’m talking about.’ It’s that anthem, I got them.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
