‘Today’ Shows Cop-Punch 14 Times, Leaves Out Suspect Resisting Arrest

width=”250″ height=”202″> The headline sounds sensational: “Cop punches girl in face during jaywalk arrest.” That’s how the June 17 NBC “Today” show began what might appear to be an even-handed story. But a closer look at what the network aired and what it left out show a far different result. The morning segment repeatedly played a clip highlighting what Matt Lauer referred to as a “violent arrest” – a police officer punching a young woman who interfered in the arrest of the jaywalker. That clip was shown 14 times during the segment. After the first showing of the clip, Lee Cowan told viewers, “Watch again, he closes his fist, winds up and lands a hard right to her face.” Time and again, the segment returned to the video clip showing the police officer punch the 17-year-old. Here’s what they left out. (full video below the fold) The punch didn’t end the incident at all. The YouTube video of the arrest tells a far different tale. After the punch, the 19-year-old continued to wrestle and resist being handcuffed for approximately another minute and 44 seconds. The 19-year-old jaywalker was also confrontational. Prior to the punch, she used the phrase, “get the f— off me” four times. While resisting arrest the young woman used the same expression another 10 times. On “Today”, the phrase can only be heard twice prior to the punch and Cowan talked over the second time. So what really happened was a young woman resisted arrest. Her friend, roughly the same height as the police officer, interfered and shoved the officer. He then punched her to subdue her. That punch was shown by “Today” 14 times. The original woman who fended off the police officer, told him to “get the f— off me” 14 times and that was clearly audible only once during the report. The story spin didn’t end there. “Today” interviewed Don Van Blaricom, a former Bellevue, Wash., police chief who consults on police litigation. He said the punch was a reasonable force to subdue the situation. Lauer asked both Blaricom and Rev. Al Sharpton if the event had been racially motivated. Blaricom said this: “I saw no evidence of racial animus whatsoever and that’s usually signaled by racial overtones, some racial epithet. This officer was calling the crowd ‘sir.'” That clip also never appeared on the broadcast but it was clearly in the original video at 2:30 in. The man filming the incident asks the officer why he punched the young woman and the officer says, “Step back, sir.” But “Today” drove the racial point home by relying on Sharpton, a “civil rights activist,” as Lauer described him. Nowhere in the piece did it detail Sharpton’s own racial controversies. In the 1987 Tawana Brawley case, he slandered an innocent man in the course of defending an infamous “race crime” hoax. He was sued and lost a judgment for $345,000, without ever retracting or apologizing for his accusation. Like this article? Today Show Cares More About Fiorina Gaffe Than Sestak Scandal

As of this Friday, NBC’s Today show has yet to mention the Joe Sestak scandal, something noted by the MRC’s Tim Graham in this Media Reality Check , however they did find time to poke fun at Republican California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina making fun of Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer’s hair in an open mic moment. On Thursday’s Today, they ran the clip of Fiorina’s gaffe three times, even leading the show with it in the opening teaser with co-anchor Meredith Vieira exclaiming: “Ay Carly! California Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina caught on an open mic making a joke about her opponent’s hair.” Interesting to note that the reporters and producers at the Today show care more about a GOP Senate candidate mocking a Democrat’s hairstyle than the White House attempting to manipulate a Senate race in Pennsylvania with a job offer. The following takes on the Fiorina vs. Boxer open mic incident were aired on the June 10 Today show: MEREDITH VIEIRA OPENING SHOW: And ay, Carly! California Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina caught on an open mic making a joke about her opponent’s hair. (Begin clip) CARLY FIORINA: Lauda saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said what everyone says, “God! What is that hair?!” So yesterday. VIEIRA: And her campaign is calling it nothing more than small talk, today Thursday June 10th, 2010. … MEREDITH VIEIRA: And now to that open mic incident for California Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina. Take a look at what she was overheard saying just before a television interview on Wednesday. (Begin clip) CARLY FIORINA: Lauda saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said what everyone says, “God! What is that hair?!” So yesterday. (End clip) VIEIRA: That’s the risk of those open mics. You never know. So- MATT LAUER: I can only imagine what would happen if someone heard what you say- VIEIRA: Oh my gosh! LAUER: -before the show here. VIEIRA: Zip it! … [10:03am] HODA KOTB: Speaking of a big gaff-a-rooni. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes! KOTB: Alright so Carly Fiorina was getting- GIFFORD: Gaffarina. KOTB: Gaffarina. Carly Fiorina was getting ready to do a, an interview. She, again, is getting ready to run against Senator Barbara Boxer for the seat- GIFFORD: A hotly contested seat, yeah. KOTB: Very. So what you don’t realize sometimes is when you’re waiting to do an interview, you have a mic on, and as they’re prepping you, sometimes you’re so comfortable, you’re not thinking about the fact that a mic is on and people are listening- GIFFORD: Over and over and over again this happens. KOTB: -around the globe. So this is what Carly Fiorina said about Barbara Boxer’s hair. (Begin clip) CARLY FIORINA: Lauda saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said what everyone says, “God! What is that hair?!” So yesterday. (End clip) KOTB: Doh! Doh! That’s when you realize it’s on. GIFFORD: Busted! Busted! KOTB: Now those kind, we were asking our Facebook folks about is it, are women, I hate to say this but, yeah. Can women always remain to be catty no more matter where you are in your life? GIFFORD: If anybody videotaped our little morning thing upstairs- KOTB: Or here, in the commercials. GIFFORD: Just during commercial breaks. KOTB: No it would be, we’d be fired. GIFFORD: Let’s be honest. We all say things that, in context, we don’t mean to be hurtful. KOTB: No. No. GIFFORD: They’re just truthful. You know what I’m saying? Just true. KOTB: And Carly Fiorina, by the way, went through breast cancer. She, ’cause her, her hair has actually changed. She went through chemotherapy and the texture changed. GIFFORD: Right, right. KOTB: I know she’s also sensitive about, about that as well. But anyway it was an interesting- GIFFORD: It’s gonna be interesting to see how it affects the race, if at all. Politics is ugly. It’s just ugly, anyway. But this is, this is like a little window into a soul, you know? And people, it affects people. KOTB: Do you remember when [John] Edwards was joozing his hair in the, remember he was like, and they played that song? Breck Girl, the Breck Girl song or whatever. When he was doing – like it’s funny when little things can change people’s perceptions of you. GIFFORD: Well when people are struggling to put food on their table nobody wants to hear about a $400 hair cut. KOTB: No they don’t, they definitely don’t.

Obama’s Knowing ‘Whose Ass to Kick’ Pledge Continues to Delight TV Network Journalists

More than 24 hours after NBC’s Matt Lauer prompted him to say it in an interview, the morning programs all showcased it – and even after day-long playback on the cable channels – CBS and NBC on Tuesday night delighted in again highlighting President Barack Obama’s boast that he’s gathering information on the oil leak “so I know whose ass to kick.” Katie Couric put the soundbite, from a competitor, at the top of the CBS Evening News: “In a TV interview aired today, the President said if BP’s CEO worked for him, he’d be fired. And Mr. Obama defended his handling of the disaster.” NBC Nightly News provided a re-run. A day after anchor Brian Williams trumpeted as “just into us” the bite illustrating how Obama “showed some anger on the topic of his handling of this spill so far,” reporter Anne Thompson touted: “Criticized for not conveying his anger over the nation’s greatest environmental disaster, President Obama fired back during an exclusive interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer.” Earlier, from Geoff Dickens: “ NBC’s Lauer Prompted Obama’s Use of the ‘A’ Word ” From the start of the Tuesday, June 8 CBS Evening News: KATIE COURIC: Good evening, everyone. The President is heading back to the gulf coast, his fourth trip there since the oil rig exploded seven weeks ago today. It will be a two-day visit to once again see for himself what’s going on in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Meanwhile, here’s what we’re seeing tonight– fire on the water as BP burns off some of the leaking oil. And this video just released shows the power of the gushing crude before the well was capped. Government scientists confirmed today that plumes of oil are spreading far below the surface of the gulf and far away from that leaking well. In a TV interview aired today, the President said if BP’s CEO worked for him, he’d be fired. And Mr. Obama defended his handling of the disaster. PRESIDENT OBAMA: I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick. From the NBC Nightly News: ANNE THOMPSON: …Criticized for not conveying his anger over the nation’s greatest environmental disaster, President Obama fired back during an exclusive interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer. OBAMA: A month ago I was meeting with fishermen down there standing in the rain, talking about what a potential crisis this could be. And I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick. THOMPSON: The President expressed particular displeasure with BP’s CEO Tony Hayward, who said last week he wanted his life back. OBAMA: He wouldn’t be working for me after any of those statements.

Matt Lauer Denies Cheating Allegations; Alexis Houston Rumored as Mistress

Matt Lauer and his wife are shooting down reports of a split amid his cheating ways – with Alexis Houston, who claims to be Whitney’s half-sister, the other woman! Allegedly the other woman, and allegedly Whitney Houston’s half-sister. Both parts of this story are suspect, to say the least. Especially after Whitney’s rep said: “Alexis Houston has no relation to Whitney in any way, shape or form.” Whitney’s relative or not, Matt Lauer met Alexis Houston several years ago when she accompanied Whitney’s real-life relative Dionne Warwick to the morning show. According to Hollyscoop, Lauer reached out to Alexis as recently as the 2010 Olympics, saying she was apparently at the sporting event to sing in Whitney’s stead. Or not. “Whitney was never scheduled to perform at the Olympics,” her rep said. Okay, great … so is there any truth to this sordid Matt Lauer affair or what? Was Matt Lauer cheating on his wife with Alexis Houston? As for Alexis, her rep has denied the Lauer affair, saying: “Ms. Houston has never had any sort of relationship with Mr. Lauer and does not even recall meeting him.” Basically, Matt Lauer’s had marital problems. But he’s no David Boreanaz. Or Tiger Woods. Or Jesse James. You get the idea. In a statement, the Today host said: “I am living in my apartment with Annette and my children as a family and a couple. I have never moved out. I am not moving out. There is no truth to that.” “Have we had a completely perfect, easy marriage? No,” Lauer says. “But the stories you’ve read over the years are not true. I don’t think we’re any different than any married couple that’s been together for 12 years. The accusations are ridiculous and I’m not going to [dignify] them with an answer. It’s not true.” He calls the cheating allegations “ridiculous” and “offensive.” Interesting. Makes you wonder if there’s a grain of truth in this somewhere. Added Annette Roque Lauer: “Out of self respect, I want to stand up for our family.”
