Rick Ross has been busy promoting all things Maybach Music, but the Miami rapper took a break recently to give back. The Teflon Don surprised students at his alma mater Miami Carol City High School, donating iPads and Reeboks, plus he brought Swizz Beatz along for the ride… Continue
‘I really feel like I outdid myself,’ Rick Ross’ buddy and artist tells Mixtape Daily of U.F.O. Vol. 2. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Torch Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Mixtape : U.F.O. Vol. 2 Headliners : Torch, DJ Scream and DJ Swamp Izzo Representing : Bronx, New York Real Spit : Rick Ross ‘ Maybach Music Group is a multifaceted machine. While songs by MMG artists like Meek Mill, Wale and, of course, Rozay himself make dents on the Billboard charts, Maybach spitters like Torch have the streets covered. As an original member of the Bawse’s Maybach Empire, Torch has held his own on the mic, even if he sometimes doesn’t get the credit he feels he deserves. With his latest mixtape, U.F.O. Vol. 2, Torch aims to change all that. “When people hear ‘U.F.O.,’ they think aliens and stuff, but that’s far from what it means,” he told Mixtape Daily of his title. “It means Underestimated, Forgotten and Overlooked. It’s a sequel to Volume 1, which is already a certified classic by the streets.” With U.F.O. Vol. 2, Torch gives more than just rapper bravado. On the opening track, “Go Get It,” he hooks up with MMG singer Teedra Moses. Over a sampling of Lonnie Liston Smith’s “A Garden of Peace,” the same song Jay-Z sampled for his 1996 classic “Dead Presidents II,” Torch self-motivates. Reminiscing on dead and incarcerated friends, the brave-hearted lyricist keeps his eye on the multimillion-dollar rap prize. “I’m just trying not to let ’em down,” he raps. The Bronx spitter reimagines another rap classic on “Slowdown,” where he samples Lowell Fulson’s “Tramp,” more famously flipped on EPMD’s 1990 single “Rampage.” Rather than settle for a simple remake, Torch recruits Meek Mill, Wale, Gunplay, Stalley and Young Breed for an MMG all-star posse cut. Rick Ross shows up for “Grind-24,” and Masspike Miles chips in on “Thinking Out Loud.” Though every major player in the Maybach camp is accounted for, Torch doesn’t use his band of brothers as a crutch. So much of U.F.O. Vol. 2 showcases his solo talents. On “R.I.P.” the hungry rhyme slinger deads his competition, and with “Truth or Dare” Torch puts a conceptual spin on the childhood game. “I really feel like I outdid myself on this Volume 2, ” Torch boasts. We’d have to agree. Joints to Check For
1D’s Niall Horan weighs in on rumors of a boy-band rivalry, saying the Wanted are ‘really nice guys.’ By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Astrid Stawiarz/ Getty Images There’s something happening right now. That something is a British boy-band explosion , led by One Direction and the Wanted . While 1D touts candy-coated love affairs in their music, the Wanted are selling ones that are enjoyed best with an adult beverage. While they each cater to different audiences, one thing they have in common is that girls absolutely love them. As both bands bring their signature charms to the States, having already conquered their native U.K., many fans are wondering if there’s any rivalry, friendly or otherwise, brewing between the two. One Directioner Niall Horan assures MTV News that everything’s cool between the two groups. “We all know each other. It’s the same in the U.K. as it is here, everyone knows each other,” he explained. “And, we haven’t seen the Wanted in a while. We just haven’t been in the same place at the same time. They’re really nice guys. And every time we’ve met them, we’ve had a good laugh with them. The more, the merrier! Let’s bring the British invasion over here and show them what we got, I suppose.” One Direction dropped their debut album, Up All Night , this month and became the first English act to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. Meanwhile, the Wanted will drop their U.S. self-titled debut next month, riding the wave off their hit single, “Glad You Came.” But, it’s not just boy bands that U.S. audiences are buying and loving: There’s a full-on British invasion, as Horan called it, which reaches far beyond just pop groups, and also includes chart-topping pop divas. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. “Adele and us and Jessie J and the Wanted, it’s all very good.” Related Artists One Direction
‘You gonna hear D.C., Philly, the South, everything all in one,’ Meek tells MTV News on the ‘Bag of Money’ video set. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Meek Mill There are quite a few things that fans can expect to hear on Maybach Music Group’s upcoming Self Made, Vol. 2 compilation album. Chances are we’ll hear the infamous “M-M-Maybach Music ” drop a number of times, a few of Rick Ross ‘ patented grunts and, according to Wale and Meek Mill , a bit of their respective hometown vibes. “Me and Wale, we always talk all the time, and I told Wale I actually wanted to do a couple myself on a Philly type of vibe and he wanted to do something on a D.C. type of vibe,” Meek told MTV News from the video set for the new MMG single “Bag of Money” featuring T-Pain. The first Self Made album boasted a number of successful singles like Meek Mill’s “I’ma Boss” and Wale’s “That Way.” Each member of the roster contributes solo songs, while the others pitch in on the feature side. For example, Self Made, Vol. 2 ‘s first single, “Bag of Money,” is billed as a Wale single, though Meek Mill and MMG boss Rick Ross both contribute. Though Wale and Meek have their own plans to put on for their respective cities, Meek makes note that in the end, Rozay is the glue that brings it all together. “Ross is always gonna bring a lot to the table with Self Made. I’ma say he’s the ringleader of the whole Self Made movement, so we just wanted to bring our parts of the table to it so we make it…” Meek said, taking a moment searching for the right word until Wale pitched in and helped finish the thought. “Have a definitive sound,” he added. The two MCs estimate that they have close to 40 songs already recorded for the compilation and they weren’t quite sure which tracks would make the project. They did, however, promise a diverse sound. “You gonna hear D.C., Philly, the South, everything all in one,” Meek said. “We just want to give you a part of everything.” What are you expecting from Maybach Music Group’s Self Made, Vol.2 ? Even without his own album, Rozay owned 2011 and topped our Hottest MCs in the Game list. By MTV News staff Rick Ross Photo: MTV News / Getty Images When Rick Ross experiences a personal moment of triumph, a hearty grunt typically marks the occasion. Built up from the bowels of his belly, Rozay’s baritone call has become as ubiquitous as his titillating one-liners — not that a simple ad-lib is the only thing that earned Rick Ross the #1 spot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list, his first time up top. Rozay was on pace to release his fifth studio album until he faced a pair of “minor setbacks,” as he so poetically dubs the two seizures he suffered in October. ” God Forgives, I Don’t was slated to come out in 2011, and he had the two seizures, and we thought it was going to make him fall back completely — but he came back and hit us with Rich Forever, ” MTV News senior hip-hop writer Rob Markman pointed out during the Hottest debate. Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! The truth is, Rozay’s 2011 reign didn’t hinge on an album release. The Bawse set things up properly in February of last year when he signed his Maybach Music Group record label over to Warner Music Group and scooped up newcomer Meek Mill (this year’s #7 Hottest MC ), Wale (#10) and later Stalley. Musically, Ricky Ro put his team in position to dominate with the label compilation Self Made, Vol. 1. Rather than taking all the shine, Ross passed the baton to Meek, who delivered “Ima Boss” and “Tupac Back.” Wale contributed the rhythmic gem “That Way,” and even ousted MMG spitter Pill logged serious miles on the LP. HOT STREAK Album: Self Made, Vol. 1, with Maybach Music Group Selected Mixtapes: Rich Forever Singles: “You the Boss” (featuring Nicki Minaj), “I Love My Bitches” Street Bangers: “9 Piece” (featuring Lil Wayne), “Stay Schemin’ ” (featuring Drake and French Montana), “Yella Diamonds” Key Guest Appearances: DJ Khaled’s “I’m on One,” Meek Mill’s “Ima Boss,” Lil Wayne’s “John,” French Montana’s “Shot Caller” remix, Drake’s “Lord Knows” Meteoric Metrics: Ross established his Maybach Music Group brand as its CEO when he notched two #1 rap albums with Wale’s Ambition and MMG’s Self Made, Vol. 1 Business Ventures: Despite having a solo deal with Def Jam, Ross bossed up and took his MMG label to Warner Music Group, signing Wale, Meek Mill and Stalley. Tours: Rozay joined Wayne on his I Am Still Music Tour Monumental Moment: Ross is no stranger to success as a solo artist, but after he signed his MMG label to Warner, he truly became a boss! Forecast: To be able to dominate 2011 without a solo album released is an amazing feat for Ross. With God Forgives, I Don’t on the way and a possible collabo mixtape with Drake, the Double-M-Genius may be going for the repeat. “You wouldn’t even know that he didn’t have an album out [early last year], because he was all over the radio,” said Rahman Dukes, director of hip-hop news at MTV News. Whether on his own singles (“You the Boss,” “I Love My Bitches”) or on tracks that he was featured on, the M-I-Yayo MC turned in multiple unforgettable performances. “Ima Boss” was technically Meek’s song, but the casual listener may have missed that fact. Lil Wayne’s “John” was basically a remix of the 2010 Ross track “I’m Not a Star,” and on the summer anthem “I’m on One,” Rozay flexed his muscle alongside Drake and Weezy. “Rick Ross makes raw records, he makes street records. When he gets on a verse, his beat selection is impeccable,” MTV Jams’ Tuma Basa said, before pointing to Ross’ star-making ability with Meek and Wale. “He’s making other people hot, and these are people, without Ross, may not have been on this list. They’re on this list thanks to Ross.” It’s deeper than rap with the Double-M-Genius. Beyond the studio, the Bawse proved his worth in the boardroom as well. “I don’t think any artist did a better job of branding than Rick Ross,” said MTV RapFix blog editor Nadeska Alexis. “He was just a marketing genius this year, and you gotta give it to the man.” Ross meets all the criteria to be considered the Hottest MC in the Game. His impact is irrefutable: Even without a solo album, he maintained a healthy and consistent buzz throughout the year, notching a #1 rap album with his Self Made compilation. Lyrically, Rozay has grown from his “Hustlin’ ” days and become one of the game’s most celebrated spitters, and his swag is through the roof. Check his big-boned, shirtless confidence, immaculately groomed beard and top-of-the-line designer-sunglass collection. If that weren’t enough, the rotund Rozay cemented his #1 spot in January when he dropped his free 19-song Rich Forever mixtape. While there is no SoundScan or Billboard chart that can measure its impact, with Rich Forever, Ross proved in this era of overdone crossover singles that rap still rules. “Rick Ross, I think, provides hope to that MC, to that kid growing up who just wants to rap and make street music and say, ‘You know what? In this world where hip-hop has become pop, you can still just rap,’ ” Markman said. Insert Rick Ross grunt here! What do you think of our list? As part of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, Meek proves he’s a ‘Boss’ and makes his Hottest MCs in the Game debut. By Rob Markman Meek Mill Photo: Getty Images Album sales aren’t the only measure of a hot MC. Meek Mill doesn’t have a solo LP on the shelf, but the Philadelphia flame spitter has made his presence felt in a variety of other ways. Thanks to “Ima Boss,” his inescapable single with Maybach Music CEO Rick Ross, Meek has maintained a deafening buzz on the streets and impacted the game like no other MC in his class. Meek Milly meets all of the criteria to be considered one of the “Hottest MCs in the Game.” His in-your-face lyrical delivery and fresh-off-the-block style have all helped earn him the #7 spot on the “VII” edition of the list. Meek started off his year right, landing a spot on XXL ‘s 2011 Freshman cover before most rap fans could even pick him out of a lineup. But those unfamiliar with Milly quickly learned who he was when Ross signed him to Maybach Music Group . And then his single “Ima Boss” began to catch fire in the streets. From the song’s opening bars, Meek separated himself from other rap rookies by putting his gangsta on full display, daring his adversaries to come for him (“They say they gon’ rob me, see me never do sh–“). Forecast: Meek’s accomplishments are more impressive when you consider that he has yet to release his debut album. With an unspecified 2012 release date on the table, look for Meek Milly’s star to rise in the coming months. “For me, Meek is that real, real street music,” MTV News editor/writer Rebecca Thomas said. “As much as I’m a Drake fan, a [Big] Sean fan, all those people, I just think there are days you wake up and you need to hear ‘Ima Boss.’ If you didn’t feel ‘Tupac Back,’ if you didn’t feel ‘Ima Boss’ all last year, you’re dead.” It wasn’t just the fans that felt Meek either. Everyone from Fabolous to Jim Jones repurposed the “Ima Boss” beat for their own freestyle needs. The omnipresent single peaked at #17 on the Billboard Rap chart, but its run in the streets and the clubs made it seem so much bigger. Mill didn’t ride just the one single, though: On “Tupac Back,” he resurrected the spirit of the fallen rap legend, and with “House Party,” from his Dreamchasers mixtape, Meek has created quite the track record. Last year alone, Meek signed a deal with Ecko Clothing to launch his own Dreamchasers line, was named one of MTV Jams’ Fab 5 artists, won MTV2’s Sucker Free’s Who Got Next award and snagged a #1 rap album with his appearance on MMG’s Self Made, Vol.1 compilation. “You need dudes like Meek to hit the reset button every now and then on the game just to let them know like, ‘Yo, this comes from the streets,’ ” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news. “He’s just as responsible for building that MMG Empire as Ross is.” Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! ‘I’m puttin’ that trap music in ya ear, I’m putting that reality rap in ya ear,’ Pill tells Mixtape Daily of his latest tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Pill’s The Epidemic Photo: No Sleep Gang Main Pick Headliners : Pill and DJ Holiday Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : The Epidemic Real Spit : Deal or no deal, Pill is going to grind. The Atlanta MC may no longer be a part of Rick Ross ‘ Maybach Music squad, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting that work in. On February 9, P-I-Double-L released The Epidemic , his 16-track reality rap opus. “You know all eyes on me right now and it’s all on me right now,” Pill told Mixtape Daily . “This was a very strenuous task of mines. I put in a lot of hard work over the last couple of months, and it’s just gonna bridge that gap between real music and the fraud music.” Since his breakout hit “Trap Goin’ Ham,” Pill has built his rep on intelligent but street-centered raps. “I’m puttin’ that trap music in ya ear, I’m putting that reality rap in ya ear, I’m putting that music that you can jog to, run to, work to,” he said. “I’m putting that music out that you can actually uplift yourself to.” There are a variety of jams on The Epidemic — the tape’s opener “Movin’ Out” samples Billy Joel’s 1977 single “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song).” Sounds a bit unorthodox for a trapper-turned-rapper, but Pill expertly employs a double-time rap bounce, spitting, “I’m movin’ out, movin’ out/ My clothes and my shoes is out/ And I’m ready ta let you know what these lame-ass motherf—in’ fools about” at the track’s opening. On “Parkin’ Lot,” featuring Twista, Pill switches up his sound but not his intensity. The dark and menacing production is the perfect backdrop for Pillionaire’s murderous boasts. “Down for My N—az” is a hard-knocking ode to his crew and their street-centric lifestyle. With “Chill Out,” he takes a different turn over a bright and cheery track, rapping sweet nothings in the ear of a nondescript love interest. Then with “Memories,” Pill takes a trip down memory lane, recalling the hard lessons he learned during his childhood. If nothing else, Pill displays a wealth of range on The Epidemic, and in the end the tape stands as a testament to his work in the trap and in the studio. Joints to Check For
