Wale’s Ambition Makes Him #10 Hottest MC In The Game!

Mr. Folarin’s tireless work ethic and an assist from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group lands him a spot on MTV News’ Hottest VII list. By Nadeska Alexis Wale Photo: Getty Images Wale’s sophomore LP, Ambition, debuted at #2 on the albums chart in November, and the title couldn’t have been more appropriate. The Washington D.C. rapper reinvented himself in 2011, claiming a new space in the hip-hop stratosphere after a sound, but commercially disappointing, debut two years earlier. Wale’s tireless work ethic, along with a deal from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, were the keys to his success and his #10 slot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. After releasing Attention Deficit in 2009, Wale parted ways with Interscope Records and decided to continue on his mixtape grind. In August 2010, he dropped More About Nothing, the second installation of his “Seinfeld”-themed series. And if Wale was putting out feelers for his fanbase, it worked. The mixtape became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and pulled in 100,000 downloads in a matter of hours. Fans weren’t the only ones paying attention though. Rick Ross, in the midst of constructing his MM Group empire, also took notice. Want to Join the Debate? Just Hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! By February 2011, Wale was officially signed to MMG under the Warner Bros. umbrella. With the release of Maybach Music’s Self Made Vol. 1 compilation last summer, Wale demonstrated his ability to deliver bangers on hits like “600 Benz,” and from there his star only continued to rise. “Wale really touched on a broad scale, when it comes to an audience, it’s hard to dispute that,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent programming strategy. The criteria to be considered a Hottest MC are based on a combination of impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles. Mr. Folarin pretty much touched on them all. He performed with the Maybach crew on shows like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” finally getting his mainstream shine. With the right support system behind him, Wale began to prep his sophomore album, but he teased it with another excellent mixtape, The Eleven One Theory, in August 2011. In addition to proving that he was still a very talented lyricist, singles like “Bait” reinforced the fact that he’d finally found a sound that would appeal to a wider audience. By the time November 1 rolled around, Wale had built plenty of anticipation for his second album. Thanks in part to Rick Ross — who demonstrated his uncanny talent for branding in 2011 — #Ambition took on a life of its own in the world of social media, with its inspirational undertones. Lead single “Lotus Flower Bomb,” plus the Kid Cudi-assisted “Focused” , “Slight Work” (featuring Big Sean) and, of course, the title track “Ambition” (featuring Meek Mill and Ross) struck just the right balance between Wale’s sometimes-dense rhymes and radio-friendly numbers. “Lotus Flower Bomb is a #1 record and Wale’s album was very balanced and diverse,” MTV Jams’ Tuma Basa noted. In the post-release madness, Wale appeared alongside Rick Ross on the cover of Billboard , dropped verses on the Bawse’s Rich Forever mixtape and even recruited Chris Brown to direct the visuals for “Slight Work.” After shaking off the disappointment of his debut album and surviving the dreaded sophomore slump, things are only looking up for Wale. Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Rick Ross Speaks On Pill Leaving MMG, Wishes Rapper Much Success [Video]

Ungh! Atlanta rapper Pill infamously split ways with Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group late last year. While speaking on Pill’s departure, Rozay told MTV News that he harbors no ill will toward the “Trap Goin’ Ham” rapper. “I’m a real dude and I’m a real boss and once you rep the MMG flag, I’ll never step on your feet; I’ma give you a pass anyway,” said Ross from the set of French Montana’s “Shot Caller (Remix)” video… Read more at HipHopWired More On Bossip! Rick Ross Birthday Bash Boasts Dr. Dre, Diddy

Miami’s Club Amnesia filled with hip-hop royalty Sunday night in honor of Maybach Music MC. By Rahman Dukes Rick Ross and Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News MIAMI — Rick Ross cemented a weekend of jet-set partying for his 36th birthday in ultimate style Sunday night at his home base in Miami, surrounded by some of his closest friends and thousands of fans. Club Amnesia was packed wall to wall with almost no wiggle room, filled with hip-hop heavyweights and club revelers watching closely, competing to get a shot of the action. Ross ascended from a chauffeur-driven black Maybach shortly after 1 a.m. with companion DJ Khaled by his side. Decked out in his signature coconut-colored silk threads, the hefty MC was swiftly ushered by his Maybach Music entourage inside the venue. Fans cheered, “Happy birthday, boss,” as an elated Ross made his way to Amnesia’s top-level VIP area, where dozens of music celebrities — including producer/singer Sean Garrett, actor Evan Ross and powerhouse producer Dr. Dre — were waiting in the wings for his arrival. Dre was easily the night’s most-talked-about guest, as the sight of him and Ross together confirmed their union after being spotted hanging out together in Miami recently. Soon after Ross, the celebrity arrivals began to flow in sync with the hundreds of bottles of Moet Rose champagne and Ciroc vodka that were delivered to his seating area. Party host Diddy showed up soon after with an entourage consisting of new Bad Boy artist French Montana, Cassie and his son Justin. Minutes later, Wiz Khalifa and girlfriend Amber Rose joined the party. “This is your night!” Diddy shouted at Ross, alongside a grinning Khalifa by his side. Ross, with Dre directly behind him, raised a glass filled with pink bubbly. As the night continued full steam, other hip-hop artists including the LOX, upstart Chicago crew L.E.P. and singer the Dream separately made their way to greet the Bawse. At one point, there were whispers that Young Money superstar Drake was also present in the building, but the Canadian MC was nowhere to be seen. One of the most-touching moments of the night was a snapshot of Ross and former business manager and Poe Boy head E-Class exchanging hugs and pounds. Class had been a longtime associate of Rozay since his earlier days, until the two had a recent falling out that ended their business relationship. Wrapping up the night in traditional fashion, Ross and his MMG family exited the empty-bottle-strewn VIP area and made their way to the stage for an impromptu performance. Ross gave the audience their money’s worth, performing hit after hit from his war chest of club anthems. “They say I’m getting money, must be Illuminati/ Talking to the Holy Ghost, in my Bugatti,” Ross rapped on the track “Holy Ghost” off his Rich Forever mixtape. “He knockin’ on the door, don’t let the devil iiiinnn.” On this night, the larger-than-life MC had his way, no doubt to be blessed with another banner year. Wale: ‘I Still Support’ Pill Despite MMG Split

‘I believe in Pill, and I’m sure Rozay believes in Pill, and we wish him the best,’ Wale tells MTV News of former Maybach Music comrade. By Rob Markman Wale Photo: MTV News There is no love lost between Maybach Music and Pill . Earlier this month, the Atlanta MC dropped a bomb when he revealed that he was working to terminate his deal with Warner Music Group and leave Rick Ross ‘ Maybach Music crew. There isn’t any beef with Wale , though; the D.C. spitter told MTV News he still supports his former MMG comrade. “Personal is personal, business is business. I’m friends with people that I’ve fired, so I’ve been in the game long enough to understand [you need to] separate the two,” Wale said Wednesday when he walked the red carpet for the reopening of Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in New York. “So shout-out to Pill and what he’s doin’.” On December 28, Pill vented via Twitter , criticizing his label for not providing enough television and radio support. Though the “Trap Goin’ Ham” MC was featured heavily on Maybach’s 2011 Self Made Vol. 1 compilation, on January 3, he told MTV News he was never actually signed to Ross’ label. According to Pill, his recording contract was with MMG’s parent label, Warner Bros. Still, P-I-Double-L was included on a number of label-driven projects, appearing on the October XXL cover with Ross and company as well as a May 2011 episode of “RapFix Live” with Rozay, Wale and Meek Mill. In the end, however, things just didn’t work out. Though Pill is obviously frustrated, he maintains that he doesn’t harbor any ill will toward anyone in MMG. “I ain’t got nothing against none of them, nobody. It’s just the situation don’t work,” Pill said matter-of-factly. “I still support what he’s doin’; it just didn’t work out on the business side,” Wale echoed. “Everybody gets chances, though. Everybody gets second, third, fourth, fifth chances. I believe in Pill, and I’m sure Rozay believes in Pill, and we wish him the best.” What do you think of Wale’s support for Pill despite the MMG split? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Wale

Big Boi, Killer Mike, Pill Collabo Album In The Works

‘Them two are rap greats and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it’s unbelievable,’ Pill tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman Big Boi Photo: Jay West/ WireImage Pill ‘s situation with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group may not have worked out, but the Atlanta spitter has his eyes set on a collaborative project with Killer Mike and OutKast’s Big Boi . “We working, we thinking about dropping a tape, honestly ’cause me and Big and all us we done did records already,” Pill told “RapFix Live.” “We thinking about droppin’ a tape and then droppin’ an album.” In February 2011, Killer Mike revealed that he, Big Boi and Pill were forming a group, which is still unnamed . There isn’t much in the way of details, but Pill insists that the trio is putting something together. “We already workin’, we getting’ it in. It’s a full-time grind,” he said. “Them two are rap greats and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it’s unbelievable.” The “Trap Goin’ Ham” rapper made headlines earlier this week when he revealed to MTV News that despite his close affiliation with Rozay’s MMG label and appearing on his Self Made compilation, Pill was never technically signed to Maybach. The MC, who charges that MMG’s parent label, Warner Music Group (to which he is currently signed), never gave him a fair push on radio or TV. He is now looking to be released from Warner. Still, Pill is far from being in the dumps. In the coming weeks, Pillionaire plans to drop his solo mixtape The Epidemic and then, of course, is the project with Killer Mike and Big Boi, which he is excited about. While Pill does acknowledge Mike’s and Big’s respective greatness, he makes it clear that he is no slouch on the mic. “For other people to try to think that I’m not lyrical enough or I’m not as good a rapper — you got guys that everybody looks up to as rappers doin’ a project with me,” he said. “So you know I’m just ready for that sh– to actually take off so we can show people what hip-hop look like in the flesh.” Are you looking forward to Pill’s group album with Big Boi and Killer Mike? By Rob Markman Fabolous Photo: MTV News Fabolous has collaborated with a ton of MCs in his 10-plus years in the rap game. From Jay-Z and Lil Wayne to Rick Ross and Kanye West, Loso has spit with the best of them, but a feature with newcomer Meek Mill has the veteran Brooklyn lyricist especially excited. Fab, who will be a guest on Wednesday’s (January 4) “RapFix Live,” invited Meek Mill to jump on “You Don’t Know ‘Bout It,” a track off of his recently released There Is No Competition III mixtape . “I think Meek is, like, young energy, what hip-hop needs,” Fabolous told MTV News last month. “I always like to see new, young energy come into the game.” Meek hails from Philadelphia and has made his name as an artist on Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, but it isn’t just Mill’s skills on the mic that Fab admires. Loso also appreciates the “I’mma Boss” rapper’s ability to overcome the hardships he faced in the street. “It shows a person from the same walk of life you come from reaching something that they wanted to do against the odds of what could’ve happened,” Fabolous said of Meek’s past. “I know a little bit of his story where he went to jail and stuff like that, so it’s good to see him actually doing something that he’s pursuing and being successful at that.
