Chess Came from Outer Space

The most hotly contested leadership vote of the season will take place next week in the small Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk. Delegates from more than 100 countries will choose between two Russian candidates after a lengthy campaign filled with acrimony and allegations of corruption. The prize at stake is the top position in world chess – president of the World Chess Federation (Fide) – and the contest is being fought between former chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov, and the current president, the eccentric Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a millionaire and the leader of Kalmykia, an oil-rich Buddhist region on the Caspian coast. Mr Ilyumzhinov is no normal politician. He counts among his friends the American actor Chuck Norris and the late Saddam Hussein, has made chess lessons mandatory for all schoolchildren during his two decades in power in Kalmykia, and has built the largest Buddhist temple in Europe. Oh, and he also believes that chess was brought to Earth by aliens, and that if not enough people take up the game, the aliens might destroy our planet. Author of an autobiography with chapter headings that include “Without me the people are incomplete” and “It only takes two weeks to have a man killed”, Mr Ilyumzhinov has combined his political job with running Fide since 1995. Mr Ilyumzhinov met with The Independent in Moscow to put forward his platform for the Fide elections, and to share his views on life. First, though, he wanted to talk about his latest grand plan. Perturbed by protests over the “Ground Zero Mosque”, he has written to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, offering $10m (

Ground Zero Mosque Site Denied Landmark Status

NEW YORK — A city commission on Tuesday denied landmark status to a building near the World Trade Center site, freeing a group to convert the property into an Islamic community center and mosque that has drawn national opposition. The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted 9-0, saying the 152-year-old building blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks wasn't special or distinctive enough to meet criteria to qualify as a landmark. Commissioners also said that other buildings from the era were better examples of the building's style. National and New York politicians and the Anti-Defamation League have come out in recent weeks against plans for the mosque, saying it disrespects the memory of Sept. 11 victims. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who also chairs the foundation building the Sept. 11 memorial, has defended plans for the mosque. Several members of a crowd of 50 or 60 applauded, while others shouted “Shame!” as commission chairman Robert B. Tierney called for the vote. One opponent, Linda Rivera of Manhattan, held up a sign reading, “Don't glorify murders of 3,000. No 9/11 victory mosque.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/03/ground-zero-mosque-faces_n_668580.html?… added by: emarston

Eminem Does ‘Top 10,’ Jay-Z Talks LeBron James On ‘David Letterman’

‘Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,’ Em jokes during dig at BP over oil spill. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z visits the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Tuesday Photo: Getty Images Eminem and Jay-Z will appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman” tonight (June 25), and in addition to performing on the rooftop together, the two rappers also talk with the cranky host. In preview clips released online , Em is seen participating in Letterman’s famous “Top 10” segment and Jay sits down on the couch to chat with Letterman. Letterman and the Brooklyn MC discussed Cleveland Cavaliers star (and Jay-Z pal) LeBron James’ impending free agency and the arrival of Mikhail Prokhorov, the New Jersey Nets’ new Russian billionaire majority owner. “The tall guy,” Hov joked, referring to Prokhorov. “You’re a guy,” Letterman then told the rapper. “I’m a guy. Now, if LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Cleveland is in desperate decline. And one of the glimmering hopes they have —” “How’s your ratings in Cleveland?,” Jay interrupted to laughs. Jay, who holds a minority stake in the Nets , admitted if he found himself in a similar situation, he could concede to Letterman’s point. Only three of Eminem’s Top 10 items about advice for kids had been previewed at press time, including jokes about “Toy Story 3,” illegal downloading, and a dig at BP in the wake of the Gulf leak. “Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,” the Detroit MC deadpanned. The two rappers taped their appearance earlier in the week in New York. Initially, they requested to perform on top of the famed Ed Sullivan Theater marquee, but officials for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined to grant a permit. The pair were able to skirt the issue, however, by taking the show to the rooftop of the building and away from the streets where officials had concerns over public safety. Eminem and Jay-Z’s joint appearance was a part of promotion for their stadium concert series this September in New York and Detroit; two additional shows were announced on Thursday. 114,000 iPad Owners Exposed

Apple has suffered another embarrassment. A security breach has exposed iPad owners including dozens of CEOs, military officials, and top politicians. They—and every other buyer of the cellular-enabled tablet—could be vulnerable to spam marketing and malicious hacking. The breach, which comes just weeks after an Apple employee lost an iPhone prototype in a bar, exposed the most exclusive email list on the planet, a collection of early-adopter iPad 3G subscribers that includes thousands of A-listers in finance, politics and media, from New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson to Diane Sawyer of ABC News to film mogul Harvey Weinstein to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It even appears that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's information was compromised. It doesn't stop there. According to the data we were given by the web security group that exploited vulnerabilities on the AT&T network, we believe 114,000 user accounts have been compromised, although it's possible that confidential information about every iPad 3G owner in the U.S. has been exposed. We contacted Apple for comment but have yet to hear back. We also reached out to AT&T for comment. A call to Rahm Emanuel's office at the White House has not been returned. more at link… When will people realize that all the top technology corps are CIA/In-Q-Tel front companies, using technology created by DARPA and proliferating the military technology into civilian purposes for profit and control. You think these companies are private and in contrast to the government, when they were born and bred at the Pentagon. Break out of the left/right paradigm; these NWO cats are no joke and are operating at a higher level. added by: rodstradamus

‘It was fantastic,’ Hov says. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images BROOKLYN, New York — On Thursday, Jay-Z told MTV News he has grand plans to have major musical performances once the new Barclays Center — future home to the Nets , the NBA team Jay co-owns — opens in a couple of years. His BP3 tour stopped at the venue , and along with Jay parading out his classic records, his tour guests Young Jeezy and Trey Songz brought out surprises: Lil Wayne , Drake, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz all came out. “It was fantastic,” Jay said yesterday about his latest Garden adventure, the fond memory invoking a grin. “Again, any time you play the Garden is a special moment. It’s special. Wayne, how that worked out, he was supposed to go away for a year. Somehow he was able to perform that last show. He came out to an incredible reaction. Then Drake, Nicki Minaj — all on Jeezy’s set, which was fantastic. Then Trey Songz and Fabulous. It’s one of those magical nights at the Garden. Once again, one of those magical nights.” Thursday in Brooklyn was dream come true for Jay. He told the crowd how as a young boy in the nearby Marcy projects, he dreamed of playing basketball — and now as a owner of the Nets, he’s bringing the team his backyard.
