Justin Bieber was involved in both a dangerous and illegal situation this afternoon, and it all went down on the 101 in Los Angeles. As first reported by TMZ, the artist was pulled over for speeding and reckless driving after L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine – a witness and former LAPD patrolman – spotted Justin barreling down the freeway in his Fisker Karma, allegedly over 100 miles per hour. Zine believes Bieber should have been arrested on the spot. “Bieber was driving like a maniac,” Zine tells TMZ. “He was weaving in and out of traffic. There was hardly any space between cars as he weaved from lane to lane.” HOWEVER, Zine also acknowledges that Bieber had at least somewhat of an excuse for his actions: the paparazzi were right on his (expensive) tail. Four “reporters” swarmed Justin’s car as soon as it was pulled over, in fact. Sources say law enforcement officials will investigate these journalists for creating a hazardous circumstances, while Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, says his client was cited for going 80 mph and actually dialed 911 himself a short time later because the paparazzi picked up their pursuit. Man. At least Justin and Selena Gomez are doing better these days.
Tom Cruise has remained conspicuously silent throughout the pandemonium surrounding his impending divorce from Katie Holmes, who filed last week. According to reports, that is 100 percent by design. The star’s lawyer, Bert Fields, says Tom is planning to file as well, but has opted to let his estranged ex “play the media” before making any legal move. “Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file for divorce and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri,” Fields said, adding, “We are letting ‘the other side’ play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say.” Although it appears a contentious battle over custody for 6-year-old Suri looms ahead, Fields reiterated that Tom is disheartened by the turn of events. “It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly,” Fields said, alluding to the Scientology rumors from Katie sources and Tom’s reported attempts at reconciliation . “He is really, really sad about what’s happening.” Holmes, 33, filed for divorce June 28 in New York City and is seeking sole custody of Suri . Speculation has been mounting that Cruise is planning to file a counter divorce case in California and seek joint custody, but as of yet, he has not. The opening salvo comes July 17, when Holmes’ camp is set to appear in front of a family court judge in NYC, presumably to request a speedy temporary order granting her sole custody before Cruise’s legal team has a chance to respond. Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky will be appealing his convictions on dozens of counts of child sexual abuse, his defense team says. After a trial that featured graphic testimony from eight victims, jurors late Friday found Jerry Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 sexual abuse counts. The eight victims, now young men, testified that they were boys when Sandusky forced them to engage in sexual acts over the course of 15 years. After being found guilty, Sandusky, 68, was taken immediately to the jail in Centre County, Pa. He will be sentenced officially in about 90 days. He likely will be sentenced to serve the rest of his life behind bars. Sandusky’s defense team plans to file a motion for appeal , claiming he had ineffective counsel, based on lawyer Joe Amendola talking to the media. A linchpin of the appeal will also be prosecutor Joe McGettigan’s statements during his closing argument, when he told jurors that Jerry Sandusky could have proclaimed his innocence during an interview with Bob Costas on NBC. That violates Sandusky’s right to post-arrest trial silence, his camp argues. His attorneys will also ask the judge to sentence Sandusky to concurrent sentences, with the maximum of 20 years. For 45 convictions? Fat chance. His own adopted son, Matt Sandusky , has accused Jerry of the same thing. It’s possible an appellate court will throw out all objections on the basis of the testimony being too overwhelming to have warranted any other outcome. As of Saturday, Sandusky was placed on suicide watch in jail, according to reports. This does not mean that Sandusky is necessarily suicidal, but the judge wanted “to put the precautions in place first and then evaluate later.”
