Can models covered from head to toe conquer the catwalk? It’s no secret that the fashion industry isn’t shy about baring all — so when we heard about a new modeling agency being founded for Muslim models, we liked the idea, but just weren’t sure it would work. Check out the details and tell us if you think it could work! Modeling and modesty are two words that seem mutually exclusive, but a Muslim fashion designer in New York City is trying to change that. A new agency for Muslim models, called Underwraps , is launching next week during New York Fashion Week. Its goal? To prove that models can be gorgeous, stylish, and yet still maintain their religious beliefs. Nailah Lymus is an American-born Muslim whose parents converted to Islam before she was born… Lymus is a self-taught designer who originally studied child development. While interning at a boutique, she ended up designing and selling some pieces there, and what was once a hobby suddenly got lucrative. She’s since made it a full time profession, and has turned her eye towards models. Specifically, Muslim models. There historically haven’t been many well-known Muslim models in western fashion, but that may be changing. Lancôme just signed its first ever Muslim model, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, who’s Tunisian. Abdesslem broke into the mainstream after debuting on Vivienne Westwood’s runway, and is signed with IMG. Abdesslem doesn’t have her head covered in photographs, and doesn’t seem to be adhering—at least in her professional life—to modesty standards, and Lymus acknowledged that it has to be that way to get recognition right now. “[Muslim models] come from a background where they dress Islamically appropriate, but to be in this industry and to be a model you kind of have to forfeit that,” Lymus said. “That’s why I wanted to start this agency, so you don’t have to do that. You don’t have to lose who you are to be in this business.” To that end, she’s starting Underwraps as an agency for girls who are committed to maintaining modesty standards in their dress, but hope to work with mainstream designers. That’s Lymus’ long-term goal. “We take things seriously and are professional just like other models. During fashion week I’ll be sending them out to castings just like anyone else,” she told me. Right now Underwraps has four girls in development, who aren’t officially signed yet. She’ll bring them to industry events during fashion week and let them get a taste of the attention. Besides having a “look”, Lymus believes that the girls have to have strong personalites and be able to handle the pressures of the industry, and also the misconceptions. Especially since 9/11, there’s a lot of misunderstanding about Islam and its expectations of women. Lymus hopes to shatter the more common ones—like that women can’t work or that they have to wear full abayas. Could an agency like this succeed? It would take a special girl, and an open-minded designer to make it happen. While runways featuring lots of bare skin tend to get attention, there are many designers who could theoretically use Muslim models. Haider Ackermann’s spring show, which featured layered looks and even veils, is one that comes to mind. Regardless of whether or not Underwraps is successful, we love that agencies featuring non-traditional models are trying to make a go of it. We could see there being certain shoots and shows these models could do, but it seems like it might not be enough work to really pay the bills. According to TMZ reports : Drake is finally firing back at the disgruntled female vocalist featured on his hit song “Marvin’s Room” … telling TMZ he NEVER threatened the woman when she complained about payment. Earlier this week — a woman named Ericka Lee filed a lawsuit against Drake, in which she claimed she co-wrote the song but never got proper credit. In her suit, Lee claims Drake warned her that if she didn’t back off about payment … he had “people” who would take care of “issues like her.” But Drake’s rep says, “This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct.” The rep also claims Lee consented to have her voice used in “Marvin’s Room” without compensation … adding, “Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court.” In her suit, Lee claims she and Drake were engaged in a romantic relationship for more than a year between 2010 and 2011 … but sources tell us the rapper is adamant there was never a relationship between the two. By Kara Warner John Krasinksi and Drew Barrymore in “Big Miracle” Photo: Universal Pictures If you’re looking for a feel-good film to see this weekend, look no further than “Big Miracle,” the story of the real-life rescue of three gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1988. Incredibly, the effort became an international issue that involved a rare collaboration between the United States and the Soviet Union and garnered worldwide media attention. MTV News recently caught up with the three stars of the film, Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski and Kristen Bell, who explained the multi-generational appeal and importance of the story and the cause presented in the film. “The whales have Twitter accounts,” Krasinski joked when asked how the film might specifically appeal to MTV viewers. “So, streamlined information, done deal. Don’t ask us, ask them. They’ll talk all about it,” he said with a smile. “It’s a big movie that deals with participation, and with the election coming up and all these different things, and everybody is divided over this, that and the other, and everybody is angry about something. It’s one of those moments where you get to say, ‘I could just step in and lend my voice to something.’ And it really helps, it makes you feel important and special that you’re doing something. This movie sort of focuses on that completely, about how when you get a bunch of people together you can kind of do anything.” Barrymore added that the film’s setting in the late ’80s provides for a unique look back at our media and political cultures at the time. “It’s an interesting look back at how if things were a little different maybe we wouldn’t exactly be where we are. But, it’s not in a patronizing way, it’s in a really interesting way,” she said. “And it’s amazing historically, like, you know, environmentally and politically. But, I think it’s very true to what’s going on now, that if people work together, whether it’s protesting via Twitter for an important movement to change their country or to do something wonderful and important like saving whales. It’s working together, so I think actually in 1987 when this takes place and what’s going on right now today, they definitely have a connection.” Kristen Bell also focused on the warm, fuzzy aspects of the film, particularly how its positive message compares to the continually multiplying “train wreck” elements involved in other films and TV. “I think it’s a very positive story as opposed to many of the unendingly interesting train wrecks that are put on television or in films these days, which believe me, I’m not poo-pooing, but there’s something very inspiring about a story where a bunch of different people come together for a common goal and actually accomplish it,” Bell explained. “It’s very, very inspiring, I think. And often times, news headlines or things that are written about in blogs, you know, reality television, it’s not as inspiring as you want it to be, at least not for me. And it actually happened. So sad: Louisiana Tech running back Tyrone Duplessis died Thursday morning after medics responded to an emergency call at his off-campus apartment. Hazel Woods, the chief investigator for the Lincoln Parish coroner’s office, said the cause of death was not yet known and an autopsy is pending. Ruston police Lt. Tim Parker said authorities are not investigating at this time and are awaiting the coroner’s report. “Tyrone was a valuable part of this football family,” Bulldogs coach Sonny Dykes said. “This is a tragic, senseless loss, but he made a lasting impact on this team, university and everyone that knew him.” A roommate of Duplessis made the emergency call after the running back woke up with chest pain, Louisiana Tech spokesman Patrick Walsh said. The 21-year-old Duplessis, a third-year student from New Orleans, recently completed his sophomore season of eligibility. Dykes has informed his players of Duplessis’ death and the team held a meeting to discuss it. The university has also made grief counselors available to the team. “We were deeply saddened,” Louisiana Tech President Dan Reneau said. “Tyrone was not only a valuable member of our football program, but much more importantly, he was a valued member of the Tech Family. This is a painful loss for our campus community and our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.” “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tyrone and his family,” Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde said. “Tyrone was a special young man who was loved and respected by the Tech Family. He will be dearly missed, but I am sure his teammates and friends will honor and remember him through their commitment to fulfilling their potential.” Duplessis was recognized as an all-state running back at O.P. “Twilight” star drops out of big-screen adaptation of elastic Hasbro toy. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner Photo: Getty Images Bad news for those looking forward to seeing Taylor Lautner as super bendy, slightly superheroic “Stretch Armstrong”: He’s officially out of the big-screen treatment of the popular ’70s Hasbro toy. MTV News confirmed Lautner’s departure with a source close to the production. According to The Wrap , Lautner had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. The “Twilight” heartthrob is reportedly set to begin work on an independent film with Oscar-winner Gus Van Sant . Relativity Media announced Monday (January 30) that it will take over production of the film from Universal. The studio has inked a distribution deal with Hasbro. The movie was originally slated to be released in 2012, but it will now hit theaters on April 11, 2014. A new cast is expected to be announced shortly. When MTV News asked Lautner about “Stretch Armstrong” last year, he seemed excited to explore the unknown with “Armstrong,” since the film version is a brand-new concept and not a reboot or sequel. He also admitted that the character’s superpower — the ability to stretch one’s body parts to extremes — is hardly super at all. “It’s like the worst superhero power, possibly, to get, and how you’re going to take that and use it for good and how you’re going to be creative with that [is the predicament],” Lautner said. “The awesome thing with toys is it doesn’t give you a story line, so you get to create it.” Although no creative decisions have been made yet, “Muppets” and “Get Him To The Greek” screenwriter Nick Stoller [http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/05/19/stretch-armstrong-similar-to-iron-man/] was originally attached to write the script and has said the film would be an origin story similar to the tone set in “Iron Man.” Who should fill Taylor Lautner’s spot in “Stretch Armstrong”?
