WaPo Buries Story with Obvious Palin Point: Tuesday Results Show Emerging Year of the GOP Woman

While most media outlets obsessed over the liberal theme that Republicans keep “suicidally” nominating “ultra-conservatives,” Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut, who authored a book earlier this year called Notes from the Cracked Ceiling, noticed a different trend. Her story was headlined “GOP gains the lead in female politicians’ steps forward.” Tuesday’s victories of Palin-endorsed GOP women Christine O’Donnell and Kelly Ayotte underline an emerging Year of the Republican Woman. Too bad the Post buried it on Page A-6 of the paper, and it hasn’t been linked on the Post’s homepage today, either. Kornblut began: Democrats used to own the field of women running for higher office. Not anymore. Nearly two years after an anticipated gender bounce – with predictions that women in both parties would rush into politics inspired by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin — it turns out that the momentum is on the Republican side. If there is a Palin effect, it is not being matched by any Clinton effect at the other end of the ideological spectrum. Since this is the liberal Washington Post, Kornblut then turned to a cast of liberals and Democrats to assess whether this can be verified:  Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said it is “very fair” to argue that the energy for female candidates is trending Republican, a view several other Democratic strategists shared. “I’ve been struck by it,” said Dee Dee Myers, a former White House press secretary and author of “Why Women Should Rule the World.” “All the momentum is on the tea party side, so why wouldn’t it also be with the women on the tea party side?” Other Democrats dispute the notion of a conservative “year of the woman,” saying that the numerical advantage is slight, if it exists at all. They also note that some of the Republican nominees, including Christine O’Donnell of Delaware, are seen as fringe candidates unlikely to win their general elections. Stephanie Schriock, the head of Emily’s List, which is dedicated to electing [ahem, Democrat] pro-choice women, said the “candidates that are making it through these primaries are more and more extreme, radical right-wing folks” who, even though they are female, do not appeal to independent and moderate women. A Republican expert wasn’t quoted until the story’s final paragraph, although Kornblut credited Palin: Palin has unquestionably played an outsize role in upping the Republican numbers, endorsing several women, including Haley and O’Donnell, who might never have gained sufficient attention otherwise. She has brought to the Republican Party what some members had once complained did not exist: a concerted effort to tap female candidates for promotion and lift them out of obscurity. And then there is this: The woman most capable of counteracting a Palin bounce for Democrats – Secretary of State Clinton- is not available to campaign. Add to that a general sense of malaise among Democrats, a volatile electorate angry at the status quo and a growing acceptance of female politicians in both parties, and the trend is hardly a surprise, strategists said. “Who better to say, ‘I’m not part of the establishment’ than a Republican woman?” said Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway. “If you want to convey you are not of the firmament of Washington, D.C., and ergo of all the problems and out-of-control spending and corruption, you have to say, ‘I’m a Republican woman,’ because so few of them have ever been involved at that level.” You can see why the rest of the Post would want to bury this story. But the rest of the media ought to acknowledge it. They can’t say it’s not The Year of the Republican Woman because they’ll probably lose: several primary winners (the “Year of the Woman” when liberals ascended with an “Anita Hill effect”) lost in November.

NYT: ‘Defeating Tea Party Nominees Imperative to Avoid National Embarrassment’

The panic over a looming conservative takeover of Congress in November is becoming palpable in today’s liberal media. Take Thursday’s editorial in the New York Times for example: For both parties and certainly the broad swath of independent voters, defeating this new crop of Tea Party nominees has become imperative to avoid the sense of national embarrassment from each divisive and offensive utterance, each wacky policy proposal.   Yep. According to the Gray Lady, defeating Tea Party nominees is imperative to avoid national embarrassment.  But that’s just the beginning: [F]or voters of all stripes, Tuesday’s primaries should illuminate the growling face of a new fringe in American politics – and provide the incentive for level-headed voters to become enthusiastic about the midterm election. Republican leaders have to decide if they want the tiny fraction of furious voters who have showed up at the primary polls to steer them into the swamp for years ahead. They have a chance to repudiate the worst of the Tea Party crowd and show that they can govern without appealing to the basest political instincts. So far, they have preferred to greedily capitalize on the nuclear energy in the land without considering its destructive effects. Democrats, especially beleaguered incumbents and the White House, need to counter the toxic message of the Tea Party so voters have an alternative. Not surprisingly, the Times went on to lambaste Delaware’s Republican nominee for Senate Christine O’Donnell and New York’s Republican nominee for governor Carl Paladino. As such, with Obama and the Democrats plummeting in the polls, the unemployment rate at 9.6 percent and likely climbing, and the Party that has been in power for approaching four years having absolutely nothing positive to run on, the Gray Lady has decided to run its own attack ad disguised as an editorial. It sure is going to be an interesting roughly six-plus weeks heading up to Election Day.

Kudlow Calls Tea Parties Bullish for Economy: ‘Don’t Believe the Mainstream Media’

The Media Research Center isn’t the only ones out there telling folks to be wary of the media and its coverage of the Tea Party movement.  On his Sept. 15 broadcast , Larry Kudlow, host of CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” hit that point. Referring to “Tea Party” primary win in Delaware, New York and New Hampshire, Kudlow explained that this shift to the right was a net-positive for the economy. “Tonight, free-market capitalism on the comeback trail,” Kudlow said. “That is one of the messages of the Tea Party power. We saw a lot of that power last night in the primaries. I tell you what folks, that Tea Party power, that free-market capitalist power is so totally bullish for the stock market.” Kudlow advised his viewers to be skeptical of the media, which has covered the Tea Party movement and their candidates very critically, even sometimes disparagingly. He cited the “Contract FROM America,” a document put forth by various conservative organizations calling on elected leaders and political candidates to stand on a number of conservative principles. ” Don’t believe the mainstream media ,” he continued. “Don’t believe the pundits in either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. They don’t understand Tea Parties. I do. We’ve had them on this show time and time again as guests, including, including their referendum, the ‘Contract FROM America.'”  The CNBC host has his own 12-step program for the economy.  He maintains that, if successful, the limitations the Tea Party philosophy would put on government are the best way to get back to an economy rooted in free-market principles. “They are talking free markets – lower spending, lower taxing, lower regulations, even constitutional limits to government, and you heard me talk about this last week in my free market 12-step plan for prosperity,” Kudlow said. “The rise of the Tea Party people – they are going to win the vast majority of those Senate races and we are going it see a sea change in American policies back to freedom and entrepreneurship, and that is bullish.”

TV Networks Smear Christine O’Donnell; Bozell Demands Media Tell the Truth! About Tea Party Victories

Dubbed as “ultra right wing extremist” and “crazy,” Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell and her Tea Party supporters have been smeared by every major broadcast and cable network since she won the Delaware primary against GOP establishment candidate on Tuesday night. NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center President Brent Bozell reacts : This is mudsliging at its ugliest. Pure character assassination. These networks have never treated a viable Democratic candidate with this level of contempt.  How dare they lecture anyone on manners or decency ever again. The MRC demands the media Tell The Truth! about the Tea Party, its momentum and the revolution of people whose votes are proving America is fed up with Washington. Here are just some of the latest smears by the liberal media: NBC’s KELLY O’DONNELL (Sept. 15 “Today”): “Democratic officials are gleeful and called her an ultra right wing extremist.” ABC’s GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (Sept. 15 “Good Morning America”) to Republican Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell: “We saw that the Republican Party chairman in Jon Karl’s piece there, he went on to say, that you’re ‘not a viable candidate.’ That you ‘cannot be elected dog catcher in Delaware.’ He went on to say that you’re either a liar or mentally unhinged.” MSNBC’s MIKE BARNICLE (Sept. 16 “Morning Joe”): “The larger problem she has, I would submit, is this: that ‘different’ this year, for a candidate, is good. People are looking for ‘different’ this year. ‘Crazy’ is not good. CNN’s JOY BEHAR (Sept. 15 “Joy Behar Show”): “She needs to watch some porn and get some tips, is what she needs.” CBS’s NANCY CORDES (Sept. 15 “Early Show”): “The chair of her own state party called O’Donnell, ‘a liar who could not be elected dog catcher,’ and yet, the tea party conservative easily defeated the well-known Mike Castle, 53 to 47%. O’Donnell, a former marketing consultant with a checkered financial record, was a dark horse until two weeks ago…” Be sure to click here to learn how you can do your part to Demand the Liberal Media Tell the Truth!

‘American Idol’ Allows Online Auditions For First Time

A select few ‘Idol’ hopefuls will advance to L.A. callbacks. By Kara Warner Photo: FOX It’s hard to believe that a new season of “American Idol” is just around the corner, but it’s even harder to believe that the reality-TV ratings juggernaut has been around for a decade. To celebrate the 10-year milestone, it was announced Wednesday (September 15) that, for the first time, “Idol” hopefuls can submit online audition videos to MySpace . From now through October 6, aspiring Kelly Clarksons and Chris Daughtrys between the ages of 15 and 28 (as of July 15, 2010) have the opportunity to submit an audition video. According to a news release from the network, entrants must demonstrate their “stellar singing ability by performing one of the songs from the approved list a cappella. Videos are limited to 40 seconds in length, and are limited to one submission per person. Auditions will be judged in a similar fashion to the live audition cities and a select number will advance to the next round of callbacks in Los Angeles.” The song list includes Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Keith Urban’s “Kiss a Girl” and Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana,” to name a few. Fans will be able to share the videos across various networks and watch highlights in a special gallery on the MySpace page. This “American Idol” offseason has been a hectic one. Aside from Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi being out as judges, the show also dropped its age limit to 15 to make sure it doesn’t miss out on a potential Justin Bieber. Now if they would just announce who will be on the judges’ panel next season … Will you submit on an online audition video? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Kanye West Pens XXL Article — About Himself

‘At the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV,’ an apologetic Yeezy writes about 2009 VMA outburst. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West on the cover of the October XXL Photo: Harris Publications Kanye West says he often feels slighted by the media, claiming that journalists either twist his words or miss the humor in his responses. Well, the outspoken rapper will have only himself to blame if he doesn’t enjoy the October issue of XXL. ‘Ye graces the cover of the magazine and penned the story himself, a first-person narrative in which he opens up about the aftermath of his 2009 MTV Video Music Awards stunt where he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. “In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was,” he wrote. “Because I felt very alone. “I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” he explained. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.” After the incident, ‘Ye was vilified by the public and became a punching bag for comics, critics and even President Barack Obama. He also lost onetime fans who had had enough of the superstar’s stage-crashing antics. West said an apology — to everyone — was necessary. “The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend,” he wrote. “How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry’? Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. “I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace,” he added. In addition to penning a story about himself, West also curates the magazine’s special 40-page section, temporarily taking the title of “creative director.” The issue arrives on newsstands September 28 and will also features stories on Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa and a package on producers-turned-rappers a la West. Now that he’s survived the 2010 VMAs without incident, what should Kanye do next? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West

Center for Responsive Politics: Journalists Give to Dems Over GOP By Nearly 2 to 1 Margin

Outrage over political donations by Fox News’s parent company News Corp. always seemed like a bit of a stretch when it implied that those contributions affected Fox’s political coverage. Many news media outlets are owned by larger companies. Those companies’ activities don’t ipso facto affect news coverage at their media subsidiaries. So when NewsBusters pointed out that 88 percent of political donations from employees of the three TV news networks went to Democrats, it was really just to note the double standard at work (surely, numerous employees have nothing to do with the news operations). New data revealed by the Center for Responsive Politics, however, suggests a real bias at play. According to Meghan Wilson, who writes for the Center’s site OpenSecrets.org, 65 percent of donations from 235 self-identified journalists have gone to Democrats this cycle. Wilson reported (h/t ): Hayes is one of 235 people who identified themselves on government documents as journalists, or as working for news organizations, who together have donated more than $469,900 to federal political candidates, committees and parties during the 2010 election cycle, a Center for Responsive Politics analysis indicates. People identifying themselves as working for hard news outlets such as the Washington Post, the New York Times, the New York Post, News Corp., Vanity Fair and Reuters are among the listed donors. Also listed are employees from outlets offering lighter fare — ESPN, Vogue — or community news. Some have donated thousands of dollars. The average contribution per person identified is eight times Hayes’ amount, and because of some big-spending media professionals, that number is slightly skewed upwards — with the median amount donated coming in at $500. Sixty-five percent of all identified donations went to Democrats, the Center’s research indicates. Unlike either the News Corp. “controversy” or the numbers concerning network employees, these donation figures demonstrate a clear political slant among those who actually report the news. In other words, if you “follow the money,” as many Fox-haters are wont to do, it leads to a clear liberal bias among the nation’s most prominent journalists.
