Should Parents Lose Custody Of Their Obese Children?

Read the rest here:

Whenever I watch those episodes of Maury where these morbidly obese children are rolling around the stage chewing on Fruit Loops and furniture, I wonder where these parents lost their power. Since when can two and three-year-olds tell you what they are and aren’t going to eat? As a parent, it’s your responsibility to introduce the appropriate foods to your children. Is having an obese kid child abuse though? Should these children be taken away from their parents? It’s a slippery slope. Removing them from their homes and forcing them to eat better foods could also lead them to associate healthy eating with separation from their families. The only reasonable solution in my opinion would be to educate the parents of the obese about the benefits of a healthy diet, and how to prepare tasty, yet nutritious meals. Snatching those big ol’ kids out of their custody and stuffing carrots in their mouths, though? I don’t think so. Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids’ weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation’s most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases. It has happened a few times in the U.S., and the opinion piece in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association says putting children temporarily in foster care is in some cases more ethical than obesity surgery. Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Harvard-affiliated Children’s Hospital Boston, said the point isn’t to blame parents, but rather to act in children’s best interest and get them help that for whatever reason their parents can’t provide. State intervention “ideally will support not just the child but the whole family, with the goal of reuniting child and family as soon as possible. That may require instruction on parenting,” said Ludwig, who wrote the article with Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and a researcher at Harvard’s School of Public Health. “Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child,” Murtagh said. But University of Pennsylvania bioethicist Art Caplan said he worries that the debate risks putting too much blame on parents. Obese children are victims of advertising, marketing, peer pressure and bullying — things a parent can’t control, he said. “If you’re going to change a child’s weight, you’re going to have to change all of them,” Caplan said. Roughly 2 million U.S. children are extremely obese. Most are not in imminent danger, Ludwig said. But some have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties and liver problems that could kill them by age 30. It is these kids for whom state intervention, including education, parent training, and temporary protective custody in the most extreme cases, should be considered, Ludwig said. While some doctors promote weight-loss surgery for severely obese teens, Ludwig said it hasn’t been used for very long in adolescents and can have serious, sometimes life-threatening complications. “We don’t know the long-term safety and effectiveness of these procedures done at an early age,” he said. Ludwig said he starting thinking about the issue after a 90-pound 3-year-old girl came to his obesity clinic several years ago. Her parents had physical disabilities, little money and difficulty controlling her weight. Last year, at age 12, she weighed 400 pounds and had developed diabetes, cholesterol problems, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. “Out of medical concern, the state placed this girl in foster care, where she simply received three balanced meals a day and a snack or two and moderate physical activity,” he said. After a year, she lost 130 pounds. Though she is still obese, her diabetes and apnea disappeared; she remains in foster care, he said. In a commentary in the medical journal BMJ last year, London pediatrician Dr. Russell Viner and colleagues said obesity was a factor in several child protection cases in Britain. They argued that child protection services should be considered if parents are neglectful or actively reject efforts to control an extremely obese child’s weight. “Tee Tee” From The Game Talks Kiss With Tia & Where The Show Is Headed!

Continued here:

BET’s hit drama series The Game has found a secure place among audiences. It’s funny, realistic, dramatic and one of the best black shows on television right now. The cast stars Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall but many of the other characters are what give the show pizazz. Barry “Tee Tee” Floyd is one of those characters. His silly but loyal presence around Hosea “Malik Wright” Chanchez has earned him a spot in viewer’s heart. As he enters the world of entrepreneurship we see Tee Tee’s character evolve from a side-kick to a businessman. Tee Tee spoke with me about a prank kiss with cast mate Tia, where The Game is headed and starting a petition to become a regular on the show! BET picked up The Game and many changes were made.  What were some of those changes the cast had to deal with? Well for me, I felt like there were a lot of positive changes. We shot a lot more on location than we did when we were on the CW, so the show had a cinematic look – looks a lot better.  I felt like the production value went up a lot more than it was before.  They also got more dramatic with it – got a little bit away from the comedy and went more into the drama, which I liked a lot, but I felt like the fan base gave us a mixed reaction on it. Do you think that you and TT share some characteristics?  How do y’all differ from real life and TV? I’m a laid back type of guy like TT is in real life.  But I couldn’t be nobody’s flunky like that.  And he puts up with a lot more than I would ever put up with.  I wouldn’t have ever took that girl back. Who is your personal favorite character on The Game , besides TT? I like Jason Pitts – he’s funny.  The way people always say their waiting to see what TT’s gonna do and say, I’m waiting to see what comes out of his mouth next. You’re petitioning to become a regular on the show.  And I’ve noticed that they also had [Kelly] become a recurring role.  What happened with that, because you were on a lot of episodes before BET kicked in? I’ve always been recurring. But in her situation, I don’t know all the details, but I think she had something else, like another project going on.  She wasn’t able to dedicate all her time to The Game because she had another project she was working on.  So a lot of times when stuff like that happens, it’s not always because the actor got in trouble or the writers decided they didn’t like us no more; it could’ve been a million different things. What is something that happened behind the scenes of The Game that no one knows about? A:  My favorite thing that happened, it was Season 2 back when we still had a studio audience, and this scene actually ended up getting cut out, but you remember back when Melanie was staying with Malik and Tasha, and they ended up kicking her out because she got in bed with Malik?  There was a scene where Tasha was telling her she had to leave and I came downstairs with her suitcase and stuff and I was supposed to try to kiss her and just punk out and not do it.  So every take it was like, “Alright – just close your eyes, pucker up, then punk out and leave.”  So on the last take, I closed my eyes, and I got ready for the kiss.  Someone must’ve told her to grab me and kiss me for real.  So I had my eyes closed, and the next thing I know, she just grabbed me and just wrapped around me and gave me, it wasn’t a real kiss – it was just like a stage kiss, so you don’t open your mouth.  For me, I had just started acting – it was my first time really being around them like that, so it was like, “Oh Tia from Sister, Sister just gave me a fake kiss.”  I didn’t even know about the stage kiss how you don’t open your mouth.  So my natural reaction was to open my mouth.  So I got my tongue out and her mouth is closed, so I’m like, ‘Oh, I guess I’m not supposed to be having my mouth open.’ What’s in store for Barry? Well first of all, I’m trying to be a serious regular.  Go to The Game Facebook page and to just let them know that they want to see TT every week.  I started a campaign on my Twitter page telling everybody to go to the Facebook page.  And also just hit BET up on Twitter, hit up The Game on Twitter – I’m just trying to let them know that I have the fan base behind me, so that’ll give them more incentive to do it. Derek Luke Talks About His Film Career And Crossing Over To TV [INTERVIEW]

By Makula dunbar Laid back, witty and direct, Derek Luke is as composed off-camera as he is on. Still early in his career, Luke has managed to snag top roles and appear in some of the most memorable films and shows of the previous decade. Antwone Fisher, Glory Road and Notorious are only a few of his many acting conquests. Now, in a pursuit to continue living outside of the movie box, Luke is furthering his television career via season three of TNT’s medical drama ‘HawthoRNe,’ premiering June 14. Already an actor who has broken genre barriers of TV, film and beyond, Luke shares his recent experiences, short-term goals and hopes for the future. You were previously involved in another medical show, ‘Trauma’. Was ‘HawthoRNe’ something you always wanted to do or did it just happen? In film, I hadn’t yet had a lot of offers to play a doctor, so it’s actually really cool getting this chance. As I continued doing film, some characters like playing a doctor became consistent in TV. I believe a medical show is such a good structure for television. What are you anticipating most regarding season three of ‘HawthoRNe’? I’m anticipating the quote from TNT (laughs). No, I’m anticipating the new characters, faces and a great storyline. The storyline as far as my character touches on being on a professional, a father and a husband at the same time. I’m looking forward to addressing topics like that and just having fans and audiences respond to situations that are perhaps true to them. You play a surgeon on the show. What was the most difficult thing about preparing for your role? One of the most difficult things about ‘HawthoRNe’ in general was when I signed up the show was already in the process of filming. As soon as I said yes, I had less than a week to actually prepare. It was exciting and organic because I had to prepare as I went. It was just fun working on the human body. We had scenes where we did different medical procedures and I learned so much about the human body and the sophistication of it. It’s really like a computer than man has been unable to duplicate. Gruesome Evidence Makes Casey Anthony Sick

Casey Anthony abruptly left the courtroom during her murder trial with an undisclosed sickness after seeing graphic photos of her slain daughter’s remains. Whatever the reason, that was the end of the trial for the day. ” Miss Anthony is ill . We’re recessing for the day,” Judge Belvin Perry said. “Neither the state nor the defense has any comment regarding her illness.” The early end to the court session in the Orlando murder trial came after a day of graphic testimony and grisly photographs of Caylee’s remains. Discovered in December 2008, two-year-old Caylee had disappeared five months earlier. Casey Anthony is accused of murdering the toddler. When testimony with the Orange County Chief Deputy Medical Examiner, Dr. Gary Utz, began after s lunch break, Anthony looked weak and pale. Then, after the break, she looked like she was going to be sick. She couldn’t even stand up as the jury left the courtroom. She was escorted out. Utz testified that duct tape was wrapped around Caylee’s skull so tightly that it held her lower jaw in place even amid severe decomposition. He called this highly unusual. “Pieces of silver or gray-colored duct tape [were] over the jaw,” he said. “I’ve never seen a case where the mandible was found with the skull.” Photos of Caylee’s body were shown to the jury.. Earlier in the week, prosecutors say Anthony searched for chloroform and neck breaking online. The defense claims Caylee died of an accidental drowning , a shocking claim they made in opening arguments. How would that exonerate Casey? Casey was in denial due to psychological scars from being sexually abused by her own father when she was a child, her attorneys claim. [Photo: Fox News]

R.I.P. Jessica Harris, Teen Helped By Brandy Dies Months After Heart Transplant

Less than four months after Brandy helped her raise the funds needed to get a heart transplant, 17-year-old Jessica Harris has passed away. Harris, who lived in the same town of McComb, Mississippi, where Brandy was raised, died at a New York hospital on Thursday, Brandy said. The singer/actress started a campaign to raise funds for surgery to correct Jessica’s congenital heart defect after meeting Harris last year. The teen finally received the transplant in late February. “Jessica was and will always be an inspiration to our family. In the face of her illness, her courageous spirit and positive outlook gave us memories we will cherish for a lifetime,” the singer and her family said in a statement on Friday. “We were touched by the outpouring of generosity from the public when we set up a fund on her behalf to help cover her medical and travel expenses,” the statement added. Brandy thanked those who donated to the fund and the hospital that carried out the heart transplant — the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in New York. Harris suffered from hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and was denied medical insurance through her father’s job because she was deemed to be suffering from a preexisting condition. So sad… Rest In Peace Jessica Source

WTF?! Who Gouges Someone’s Eyes Out With A Spoon???

This guy does. An Alabama man is in police custody and another hospitalized in serious condition after police say his eyes were gouged out with a spoon. Family members arrived home to find a bloodied 79-year-old Bonnie Pogue, and called 911. While paramedics were working on Pogue, and with police officers present, Timayo Knight, 30, made a startling statement.
