Mel Gibson Pleads No Contest to Battery; Oksana Grigorieva Cleared in Extortion Investigation

The L.A. County District Attorney filed a single misdemeanor battery charge against Mel Gibson today. The actor, as expected, pleaded no contest . The misdemeanor specifically targets someone who cohabits or has a child with the alleged victim, but is less severe than felony domestic abuse. Mel will not receive jail time for the alleged attack on Oksana Grigorieva, but will continue to undergo counseling and be on 36 months’ probation. One of the terms of probation – he cannot use violence against anyone. Mel may continue to have “peaceful contact” with Oksana going forward. The nearly year-long Mel Gibson saga has come to an end . A no-contest plea, while not technically a guilty plea, has the same immediate effect as a guilty plea, and is often offered as a part of a plea deal. That’s what happened today. While Mel felt he could win the case in court and be completely exonerated, this was his quickest means to an end. Gibson also must perform court-ordered community service at a charity organization, and he elected to do so at Mending Kids International. The group provides life-changing surgical care to children in need. None other than Mel’s estranged wife Robyn Gibson serves as President. Meanwhile, Oksana Grigorieva will NOT be charged with felony extortion in the concurrent investigation by the L.A. County District Attorney. That case involved $15 million deal Grigorieva signed – and then rejected – during child custody mediation with Gibson in May of last year. In the deal, Oksana was promised a house, assets and other incentives, plus the guarantee that she wouldn’t release the Mel Gibson tapes . Those tapes were sure as heck leaked, but there wasn’t enough evidence to prove she committed extortion against the star at any point. With the case closed, a rep for Grigorieva released a statement saying: “Ms. Grigorieva will now concentrate on co-parenting Lucia, resuming her charitable work for the children of Chernobyl and moving forward with life.” [Photo: Fame Pictures]

Oksana Grigorieva Case: Conflict of Interest With D.A.?

No decision has been made yet, but sources report that Mel Gibson is likely to be charged with domestic violence in an alleged attack on Oksana Grigorieva. At the same time, Oksana, who Mel alleges tried to bilk him out of millions by lording his taped rants over his head, is likely to be off the hook for extortion. The question complicating an already confusing, drawn-out mess of a case is whether L.A. County District Attorney Steve Cooley should even be involved. Is the D.A. biased by a connection to Oksana’s lawyer? The D.A.’s office will soon decide the fate of Oksana and Mel, but critics are pointing to fundraisers he attended on his own behalf as questionable. Why? The lawyer who negotiated Oksana’s $15 million settlement – which she left on the table, and is at the core of the extortion investigation – is Eric George. George, a prominent Beverly Hills civil lawyer, hosted both campaign fundraisers last year, while the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department was investigating. George contributed more than $8,000 to Cooley in 2010 …

Spencer Pratt is a known loser. Still, he wants to be part of Charlie Sheen’s WINNING! team so bad that he’ll be the actor’s new publicist for free. After Sheen’s long-time PR man, Stan Rosenfield, quit this past, Spencer has come out of the woodwork, offering to help Sheen mend his image. We wouldn’t hold our breath, Spencer. Then again, it’s Charlie Sheen. Bets are off. We know he’s a role model , but he’s an unpredictable one! Spencer to Charlie: Let me use your scandal for attention help you! Pratt, who’s married to Heidi Montag, says, “I want to be Charlie Sheen’s new publicist . I am offering to be his media point man. I have great contacts with media outlets and will work for free just to be part of his winning team.” Taking media advice from Spencer Pratt is a like getting romantic tips from Mel Gibson, but we’re sure Charlie appreciates anyone reaching out to him.

Charlie Sheen has spoken out once again. In his latest interview – following sit-downs with NBC, ABC and TMZ – the actor appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight yesterday and touched on a number of topics. Has he ever hit a woman? “No, women are not to be hit. They’re to be hugged and caressed, you know?” What about the incident with Brooke Mueller in Colorado and Capri Anderson in NYC? “The Aspen thing was thrown out. Mel Gibson Case: Really Freaking Complicated!

The Sheriff’s Department’s investigation is over, but sources say the Mel Gibson case is not heading toward a resolution, or even a decision on charges, soon. The L.A. County D.A. will not make a quick decision on whether to charge Mel and/or Oksana Grigorieva with a crime, at least not this week. TMZ reports. The reason? This is a really, really complicated case! It’s unclear if either Mel or Oksana will be charged . The L..A. County Sheriff’s Dept. turned over a full report on the Oksana Grigorieva extortion investigation. There are two separate investigations in play, too. Because of the alleged extortion, the Mel Gibson tapes , her accusation of domestic abuse and myriad custody issues, the report will take time to digest. The D.A. has said they will make a decision on whether to file criminal charges as a package, but that the decision absolutely will not be made this week. Whose side are you on?

Oksana Grigorieva Case, Fate Now With D.A.

After an investigation that’s spanned several months, the Oksana Grigorieva extortion case is now in the hands of the L.A. County District Attorney. The case file went to the D.A.’s office at noon today. Some sources say a charge is unlikely , given the inconsistencies in her story and the obvious credibility problems she has amassed over half a year. The D.A. will soon decide if Oksana will be charged with extortion. It boils down to a $15 million deal Oksana signed, and then walked away from, during child custody mediation sessions with Gibson in May, 2010. The deal included child support, a house, and other assets … plus the guarantee that Oksana would NOT leak the now-infamous Mel Gibson tapes . The D.A. has also yet to decide whether to charge Mel Gibson with domestic abuse, which Oksana alleges and the actor has vehemently denied.

Howard Stern Defends Kim Kardashian Against "Scumbag" Prince

Howard Stern loves women with large breasts and little personality, so it should come as no surprise that he’s coming to the defense of Kim Kardashian. Earlier this week, the reality star was called on stage by Prince during a concert at Madison Square Garden. She proceeded to freeze , stand around like a mannequin and get dismissed from the spotlight. But Stern, a fan of Prince as an artist, blames the musician for this embarrassing incident. Kim Kardashian Freezes at Prince Concert “Apparently she’s supposed to dance like a stripper for him and she just stood there not knowing what to do,” Stern said on his radio show yesterday. “He throws her off the stage because she can’t read f–king Prince’s mind. He’s a bulls–t artist. I’m done with him.” Concluding by labeling Prince as a “scumbag,” Stern said “he seems to be an arrogant asshole lately.” That may be true, but let’s remember: Courteney Cox has a career because Bruce Springstein summoned her to the stage during a performance of “Dancing in the Dark.” Kim could have shown the world a spontaneous, fun-loving side if she had responded in similar fashion to this sitcom star. Instead, treating the opportunity like a professional athlete, she blew it.

The extortion investigation of Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva drags on, with the case still not turned over to the L.A. District Attorney. This has left prosecutors “frustrated” as they look to move forward with the domestic violence case against Mel and the extortion case against Oksana. Until files are turned over, the D.A. can’t file charges or drop the case. While the investigation was said to be “substantially done” last week, prosecutors now don’t think they will receive the case until next week, if that. “The amount of hours the Sheriff’s Department spent investigating Oksana is mind boggling,” said one source. As is the fact that Mel ever dated her . Sheriff’s officials have spent months investigating claims that she, or someone close to her, tried to trade her silence in exchange for Gibson’s cash. The two are also in a bitter custody dispute over one-year-old Lucia. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is stalling in turning over the Oksana case to the D.A.,” said a source with knowledge of the case. “It literally started out as probe into claims of extortion and now has evolved into them going over the testimony from the family law case.” “Prosecutors are getting very frustrated that they haven’t officially turned it over and it’s delaying a decision whether to charge Mel Gibson.” One theory: “It’s almost as if the cops are waiting for Oksana to commit a crime to bolster their findings, which so far, are very anemic.” “It’s unlikely any charges will be filed against Oksana Grigorieva .” Grigorieva has claimed Gibson punched her in the head at his Malibu home on January 6 if last year, while she held their then-infant daughter. In Mel’s sworn declaration, dated June 23, he admitted to slapping his ex across the face because she was hysterical and he feared for Lucia. He denies he punched her then or any other time. It’s unclear if Mel will be charged, and what role, if any, Kristian Herzog will play in whether or not authorities decide to pursue either case.
