‘Jersey Shore’ Star Deena Recalls Dirty-Dancing Past On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Everybody was like, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?’ ‘ reality starlet says of her suggestive dance-team routines. By James Dinh “Jersey Shore” star Deena appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Long before her fist-pumping days in Seaside Heights, “Jersey Shore” star Deena Nicole Cortese was already causing a commotion over her suggestive dance-floor skills. On the latest installment of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the reality TV newcomer reminiscences about her dirty-dancing antics. “When I was 17, I quit cheerleading and started dancing,” Deena says on Saturday’s episode. “It was great because me and my one girlfriend were the captains of it, and we were, like, making up the dance moves. We got to pick out our outfits and I got to show my dance moves off. It kind of brought my music into the dance team.” With her newfound creative freedom, the New Jersey native whipped up a sassy dance routine. But the high school’s staff wasn’t too impressed with Deena’s choreography. “I remember making up this crazy dance move, like sexy moves, you know, like shaking your butt,” she admits. “Everybody was sitting there like, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?’ ” Childhood friend Jaimie also remembers the controversy. “Our small town wasn’t ready for the dance moves that came out of Deena’s mind, and definitely made the teachers raise an eyebrow of what was going on,” she says. Despite the reaction of the faculty, the self-proclaimed “Energizer Bunny” says she really never understood why her routine was such a big deal. “[The teachers] were like, ‘Are they allowed to dance like that?’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘Yeah, we can dance like this,’ ” the reality starlet recalls. “It’s allowed. I’m not showing any boob or anything, it’s OK — God, open your windows,” she laughs at the memory. “There’s a lot out there.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Deena Cortese and Patrick Stump — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Roots Host Genre-Spanning, Star-Studded Pre-Grammy Jam Session

Ne-Yo, Sara Bareilles, Chaka Khan were among the many notable artists who took the stage on Saturday at the funk collective’s annual bash. By Kelly Marino Jimmy Fallon with the Roots at their Pre-Grammy Jam Session in Hollywood on Saturday. Photo: Getty Images HOLLYWOOD, California — On Saturday night, the eve of the 53rd Grammy Awards, the Roots were unstoppable, unpredictable and unprecedented as they took the stage to perform their seventh annual Pre-Grammy Jam Session. But to call the event just a jam session would be quite the understatement. Similar to the years prior, the Roots played for hours on end, covering every genre of music from the blues to hip-hop to funk and rock and roll while inviting fellow musician friends — both old school and new — onstage. “Every Jam Session you expect the unexpected,” explained drummer ?uestlove when MTV News caught up with him just before his band took the stage. “We invited a whole bunch of people down and we are going to see how good our memory banks are when they start putting us on the spot and asking us for their songs.” For the first time, the Roots decided to switch up locations, leaving the Key Club behind in favor of Hollywood’s Music Box club. The venue provided a larger space for more fans and celebrities, such as Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis and Craig Robinson, who opted to attend this more laidback event rather than the exclusive Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party taking place close by. Just a few minutes before midnight, Roots pal/boss Jimmy Fallon appeared onstage sitting solo in a stool, doing his best Neil Young impersonation as he sang the lyrics to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” — a hilarious skit he’s been known to do on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Upon finishing, he welcomed the audience to the event and urged everyone to get excited as the Roots made their entrance. Check out photos of Jimmy Fallon’s performance at the Roots’s Jam Session. “My show has been on for two years now and it wouldn’t be where it is today without these guys,” Fallon gushed as he and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter suddenly broke into a rendition of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” while the crowd cheered. Shortly after the comical warm-up, Fallon exited the stage and the Roots kicked things off with some of their known tracks — “Going On,” “How I Got Over” and “Here I Come.” Next to appear was 10-time Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin. Black Thought praised the “Don’t Worry Be Happy” singer as a “funk percussionist” while he free-styled and skittle-le-bopped around stage. Roughly around 12:30 a.m., Sarah Bareilles joined the unpredictable set list, seeming to take the crowd by surprise. But once the pop songstress started singing “Son of a Preacher Man,” the audience quickly took to her soulful side. The Roots then introduced Guy Sebastian, a soulful singer from Australia whose recent blooper clip as a judge on the “X Factor” was made famous when ?uestlove remixed it on “Late Night.” As the show went on, with the crowd seeming to grow from 300 to 500 people, the Roots began to introduce some of old-school performers. Chuck Brown, a.k.a. the Godfather of Go-Go, came out in full funk getup and busted out with the classic “Bustin’ Loose.” Young Chris performed two songs, including “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.” Too Short made an appearance and treated the crowd to “Blow the Whistle,” while blues legend Taj Mahal, Lalah Hathaway, Booker T. Jones and Betty Wright all added a little something to this incredible night. And while the audience certainly was grooving to these performers, things really perked up when Black Thought called up to the stage the “Queen Diva” herself, Chaka Khan. Cameras were clicking and phones were held in the air while the R&B legend sang “Tell Me Something Good.” In between acts, the Roots never forgot to steer the focus back to themselves, as they mixed things up by providing solo sessions throughout the night. One bandmember who never disappoints is metal maniac Captain Kirk Douglas, who ripped through his guitar solos while giving the audience a taste of some rock and roll classics like Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” George Thorogood’s “Bad to the Bone” and Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” Even at 2 a.m., guests continued to roll onto the stage. Estelle , Ne-Yo, Ryan Leslie and Melanie Fiona all performed hit after hit after hit. And while there didn’t seem to be an end to the Roots’ jam session, fans didn’t seem to mind one bit. While most of the industry was giving it a rest with music’s biggest night less than 24 hours away, attendees of this bash were rewarded for their stamina. ?uestlove needn’t have worried — the Roots proved that their memory banks were well up to par. Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Wiz Khalifa Tweets Rolling Papers Release Date

Pittsburgh MC announces his hotly anticipated debut is set to drop on March 29. By Jayson Rodriguez Wiz Khalifa Photo: Al Pereira/ WireImage Wiz Khalifa announced his album title over Twitter on Wednesday night, a name that should earn the Pittsburgh rapper two (green) thumbs up from his Taylor Gang followers. ” Rolling Papers : March 29,” he wrote, also revealing the LP’s release date. MTVNews’ 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC is set to drop the highly anticipated debut project on Atlantic Records. Last year, after operating independently and raising his profile through a series of mixtapes, Wiz announced on our “RapFix Live” online show that he was joining the label, which is also home to T.I., Paramore and Kid Rock. The lanky lyricist has a well-known affection for marijuana and, recently, he and fellow smoker Snoop Dogg joined forces for the forthcoming movie and soundtrack project “High School.” Still, his love of all things green has led to some trouble for the MC. Last November, Wiz was arrested and booked on drug charges after police apprehended the “Black and Yellow” star following a performance in North Carolina. Despite his hazy appeal, Wiz has defended his music’s merit beyond the stoner aesthetic. “It’s not just the weed. The music is awesome,” he told The Source magazine . “The music is great. Just from the beats that I pick, I’m a fan of my producers. They push me. The vibe is so positive, you can be who you want to be. The weed just goes with it. See, when I was in high school, I wasn’t in the streets. I had friends that were in the streets, but I just smoked with them. I had straight white kids that I just kicked it with and they smoked more than the kids in the streets. So I kicked it with everybody, but we were all on the same sh– mentally.” Are you looking forward to Wiz’s debut album? Tell us in the comments! ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Pauly D ‘Nervous’ About Heading To Italy

‘I don’t know what gyms are like over there, I don’t know what tanning’s like,’ Pauly tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Pauly D Photo: Tom Briglia/ FilmMagic On Tuesday, MTV announced that for the upcoming season of “Jersey Shore,” the cast would be hitting the road once again … only this time, they’re heading all the way to Italy. If you think you’re excited about the news, well, you should hear “Shore” star Pauly D talk about the gang’s upcoming trip. “I’ve never been to Italy, and it’s always been a dream of mine,” he told MTV News Tuesday night. “I’m excited to see my roots. I have family in Italy, but I don’t speak with them since I don’t know the language. My mother still talks to them, though. [And] I know Vinnie has family there. But none of us have ever been. It’s gonna be fun.” Of course, no voyage of self-discovery is complete without overcoming a few obstacles. So while he’s excited, Pauly is also aware that he and his “Shore” mates will probably run into the occasional, uh, cultural issues when they arrive in Italy. But he’s more than ready for the challenge. “I’m nervous, I’m not gonna lie,” he laughed. “I don’t know what gyms are like over there, I don’t know what tanning’s like, I don’t know the food, and the language — I don’t even speak Italian. Maybe I should get a Rosetta Stone or something. “And they got some nice clubs out there, and the women … they’re real Italian women, you know?” he continued. “Since I don’t speak the language, I don’t know how I’m going to talk with them. I’m hoping the smile does the trick. The less words the better. I’m looking forward to the challenge.” Despite the cultural differences and the language barrier, Pauly said that he can’t wait to start filming the new season — cameras are scheduled to start rolling this spring — mostly because it means he’ll get to hit the road with his best friends, which, to him, at least, is the best thing about being on “Jersey Shore.” “I really love being in Seaside [Heights], I love being in Jersey and I love being at home,” he said. “But I also love traveling, and with this, I get to travel with my lifelong friends and that’s another memory we’ll all have together.” Related Photos Jersey Shore | Back To Jersey | Cast Photos

Wnna see a close-up of Justin Beiber making out with some random chick?

Look at your calendars and remember this day. Burn the date deep into your memory and then look up at the sun, stretch your hands towards the sky, and rejoice. The impossible has become possible. There is now a .00001 percent chance Justin Bieber might makeout with you. The above snapshot was taken by some random young ladies a few months ago in Toronto, Canada, following a Bieber concert. According to the photographer, “Justin and my friend Michelle kissed behind the Four Seasons Hotel downtown a few months ago while he was in town for a concert… I didn’t feel right about releasing it before, but now its fine cuz its been a while. ” ( Ed. Note: Attention Mensa.) So who is this lucky young lady who has basically lived the dream of 97 percent of women? Surprisingly, no information has been released about her. Probably because it’s hard to make statements to the media when you’re in the Witness Protection Program. Because let’s face it: This girl’s life is in danger. The Beliebers basically guillotined Kim Kardashian for just being the kid’s friend . But a girl who actually did it? Achieved the impossible? Broke away from the throngs of billions to actually score a Bieber make out? Assuming this girl’s name is Molly… If 13-year-olds start falling out of the sky dead, I think we’ll all know who to blame. (Answer: This girl.) http://www.bestweekever.tv/2011-01-12/tweenpocalypse-justin-bieber-makes-out-with-random-fan/

Baz Luhrmann Considering 3-D For ‘Great Gatsby’

Director says he believes 3-D can be used for ‘poetic cinema.’ By Jocelyn Vena Baz Luhrmann Photo: Getty Images Are you eager to view sweeping tragic romantic dramas in 3-D? Well, then Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” just might be your thing. With Leonardo DiCaprio already hitting theaters in 3-D thanks to a re-release of “Titanic,” it seems that the actor, who also starred in Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” might be bringing Gatsby to life in 3-D. During a chat in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, Luhrmann hinted that he’s thinking of bringing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved novel to life in 3-D. According to Forbes.com , Luhrmann told an audience that he’s “workshopped” the idea of shooting the film, which also stars Carey Mulligan in the pivotal role of Daisy , in multiple dimensions. During the panel discussion, which also featured Michael Mann and Oliver Stone, the speakers noted that in the past, dramas like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Dial M for Murder” had been filmed in 3-D. Stone joked that “it would help to have [‘Dial M for Murder’ star] Grace Kelly” for today’s 3-D dramas. Right now nothing is set in stone when it comes to Luhrmann’s plans for “Gatsby,” but he did add that in the beginning 3-D was used for “gags,” then with “Avatar” it became more about “spectacle and drama” and he believes that it can be used for “poetic cinema.” The three directors were on the panel to talk about Blu-ray. “The power of Blu-ray is so great, you have to be a bit conscious about misusing it,” Luhrmann explained . “Are you trying to re-create from your memory? There are a whole lot of new questions that powerful technology brings.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Ryan Gosling Calls ‘Blue Valentine’ A ‘Cautionary Tale’ For Couples

‘People can see the film and can see themselves in it or say, ‘How do we keep that from happening?’ ‘ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by: Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News We already know Ryan Gosling thinks his latest film, “Blue Valentine,” is a “nice companion piece” to his 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook.” And this is despite “Valentine” having much darker, more sexually charged elements and some MPAA ratings drama . But we wanted to know, given the film’s edgier theme, is it detrimental or beneficial for a couple to see together? “I think it’s the best thing for a couple to see, honestly. I’m not just trying to sell the movie,” Gosling insisted when MTV News caught up with him. “Well, I am trying to hawk the movie,” he laughed, adding that he thinks it’s good for couples to see and experience together, since it will prompt discussion or that it may bring to light existing problems in a relationship that the couple could be trying to ignore. “If there is a problem in their relationship, they’re not able to look at it, and they’re caught in their own experience of it, there’s no dialogue about any of the bigger issues,” Gosling explained. “I think [‘Blue Valentine’ is] a cautionary tale about what can happen to love if you ignore it and you take it for granted.” He went on to say that, because the film highlights the “nitty-gritty” of what it takes to sustain a romantic relationship, it will get couples talking. “I think that people can see the film and can see themselves in it or say, ‘How do we keep that from happening?’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Blue Valentine.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Eminem’s Proof Tribute ‘Difficult’ Leaks Online

Shady remembers late best friend in somber track. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images Eminem has always maintained that the death of his best friend and D12 member Proof was one of the most devastating moments of his life, and four years after his passing, Eminem is still upholding the late MC’s legacy in his music. On Thursday (December 30), the Em track “Difficult” surfaced on the Web, in which the Detroit lyricist devotes several bars to his relationship with his fallen homey — who was gunned down in a Motor City nightclub in 2006 — and how the memory of his trusted friend still lingers. “Doody, most of my life it’s just been me and you there/ I continuously stare at pictures of you/ I never got to say ‘I love you’ as much as I wanted to, but I do/ Yeah, I say it now when you can’t hear me/ What the f— good does that do me now?/ But somehow I know you’re near me,” Em rhymes in the first verse. On “Difficult,” a solemn, hook-free record powered by somber chords and a glacially slow beat, Eminem speaks on the enduring impact the loss of Proof has had on his life and the lives of their mutual friends. “Everyone else is just trying to pick up the pieces/ Man, how could you touch so many f—ing lives and just leave us?” he spits. “They say grievance has its way of affecting everyone different/ If it’s true, how the f— I’m supposed to get over you?” Em also opens up about the duo’s bond as childhood buddies who remained close friends for much of their lives until Proof, born DeShaun Holton, was killed at age 32. “Doody, that’s what we called each other/ I don’t know where it came from, but it just stuck with us, we was always brothers/ Never thought about each other’s skin colors,” Em rhymes. The Recovery star also speaks candidly about cherishing an article of clothing Proof wore during a special moment in Em’s life. “And this may sound a little strange, but I’mma tell it/ I found a jacket that you left at my wedding, I picked it up to smell it/ I wrapped it up in plastic until I put it in glass and hang it up in the hallway so I can always look at it,” he raps. Em also hints at the controversy surrounding Proof’s violent death. The D12 rapper allegedly shot a fellow clubgoer at the Detroit haunt CCC and was shot and killed by a bouncer who was related to Proof’s shooting victim. A local prosecutor later ruled that the bouncer was acting in his cousin’s defense and did not face murder charges. In “Difficult,” Em paints a portrait of Proof as a peaceful person who wouldn’t have resorted to violence unnecessarily. “You were the peacemaker, Doody/ I know sometimes you were moody, but you hated confrontation and truly hated the feuding/ But you was down for yours whenever it came to scrappin’/ If it had to happen, it had to happen,” he spits. The leaked track isn’t the first time Shady has turned to music to eulogize his late friend. Em said earlier this year that “You’re Never Over,” from his chart-topping seventh album, Recovery, “finally did Proof some kind of justice by being able to put that together and dump my heart on the record.” What do you think of Eminem’s “Difficult” track? Teena Marie Remembered By Lenny Kravitz, Swizz Beatz, Q-Tip

Kravitz dubs Marie a ‘treasure’ as he recalls her generosity when he was starting out in music. By Mawuse Ziegbe Teena Marie in 2007 Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Teena Marie’s sudden death is hitting many of the late R&B veteran’s friends and family hard, including her onetime mentee-turned-rock star Lenny Kravitz. In a video posted on the rocker’s YouTube channel , Kravitz, looking sullen in a dark hoodie, reveals that he woke up in Paris to the news of Marie’s passing and opens up about her generosity and assistance when he was starting his career as a teen. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Teena. She took me in when I was around 16. I was just a musician on the street. I was living from pillar to post. She took me in, she gave me a bedroom, she fed me, she cooked for me, she took care of me. She gave me instruments to play, she took me to all her recording sessions. She took me to concerts, she nurtured me and helped me to become who I am,” Kravitz says. He added that although he hadn’t publicly discussed their relationship before now and lost touch in the years before her death, he’s still grateful for everything she did for him in those early years. “I’ve never really talked much about it in depth, but I would not be here. She changed my life, not only as an artist, but as a person who truly loved me for who I was. We’d been out of contact for the last few years, but I just want to say, Teena, that I will always love and respect you,” he says. “Thank you for being my friend. Thank you, Father, for the life of Teena Marie.” The “Again” singer also sent condolences to Marie’s loved ones and touted the late songstress’ many skills. “I just want to send all my love and respect out to the family and I just want to say Teena Marie was a treasure, was a genius,” he says. “Composer, arranger, singer, musician, unique, underrated by far.” Kravitz is one of many celebs who have paid tribute to the late star, who was found dead in her California home on Sunday. Swizz Beatz recently tweeted , “R.I.P TO ONE OF THE BEST VOICES OF MUSIC TEENA MARIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” before announcing that he would push back his weekly Monster Monday release in honor of Marie.
