Drumma Boy Wants To Unify Memphis With New Mixtape

‘We’ve been overlooked or been the underdogs and really haven’t gotten that just due,’ multiplatinum producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Drumma Boy Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Drumma Boy Drumma Boy has already put on for everyone else, now the multi-platinum rap producer is just trying to put on for his hometown. The Memphis, Tennessee, beatmaker has delivered hits to Young Jeezy, Rick Ross , T.I. and Waka Flocka Flame, just to name a few. But on his latest mixtape, Welcome to My City 2, Drumma marches to the beat of his own drum — literally. ” Welcome to My City, first and foremost, is the unification process of Memphis. It’s like bringing the city together,” said Drumma, who raps as well as produces on the tape. The tape’s stand-out single, “Where I Come From,” features reggae star Junior Reid, and on it Drumma Boy aims to inspire those in his town to be the best they can be. “Only way we gonna get seen is if we keep on winnin’/ Only way we gonna get heard is if we keep on singin’,” he raps. It’s not that Memphis doesn’t have its share of stars. In the early 1990s, 8Ball and MJG put the Southern city on rap’s map, leading the way for Three 6 Mafia to have their infamous run. Now Yo Gotti, Don Trip , Zed Zilla and, of course, Drumma look to further cement the city’s legacy. “We’re really just showing and emphasizing the city of Memphis, showcasing the talent that’s in the city,” Drumma explained to Mixtape Daily of his mission. “Because a lot of the opportunities we’ve had, we’ve been overlooked or been the underdogs and really haven’t gotten that just due.” The time is now. Don Trip Raps From The Heart On Cee Lo Collabo

‘In real life, I cry too,’ Memphis upstart tells Mixtape Daily of revealing family drama on ‘Letter to My Son.’ By Rob Markman Don Trip Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Don Trip Don Trip would rather make music from his heart than chase a hit, and sure enough, trusting his instincts led the 26-year-old Memphis, Tennessee MC, to his biggest song yet. Trip wrote and recorded the Cee Lo-assisted “Letter to My Son” two years ago after quarreling with his son’s mother fought over visitation rights. “That’s my whole aim as an artist, the fact that I’m human,” Trip told Mixtape Daily. “We become artists and once we get a celebrity status, we start to act as if we are machines, and we’re not. In real life, I cry too. Now, thanks to the popularity of the track, Trip has signed a record deal with producers Cool & Dre and Interscope Records. ” ‘Letter to My Son’ is 110 percent true — I’m still going through it,” he admitted. “It isn’t as bad as it was at first, it’s a little better, but I gotta take it one day at a time.” Trip first developed an interest in rapping when he was 11; by 16, he realized he was actually good at it. During his very first studio session, Trip recorded a song in one take, a task that even veteran rappers can find daunting. The Memphis rapper had no doubt he was on to something. Trip soon began distributing his music, personally handing out free mixtapes until he built enough of a buzz to get booked for shows. Eventually, a mutual friend would connect the up-and-coming spitter with production duo Cool & Dre, who took Trip to Interscope earlier this year. There was no denying the appeal of “Letter,” but the original version of the song didn’t have a chorus. “Jimmy Iovine personally asked for a hook to be added to the record,” Trip revealed. Still, Don was initially reluctant to tamper with his art and argued that the record should stay as is. After some thought, however, he realized the Interscope chairman was right; the MC suggested getting someone soulful, like Cee Lo, for the song. The decision proved to be a good call because the Goodie Mob singer’s feature has given “Letter to My Son” a sound that’s ripe for radio without losing its emotion and integrity. Things are definitely looking up for Don these days. He has a bubbling single, a debut album slated for a 2012 release and he’s finally getting quality time with his son. And he did it all by following his gut and baring his soul on record. Trip added, “I feel like that’s what music is missing: honesty, especially in rap music.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Another Day, Another Pervert Popped… Longtime AAU President Bobby Dodd Investigated Over Sexual Abuse Claims

Damn, it turns out pedophilia is just running rampant in sports. And the stuff this guy Dodd is accused of is just sick. The Amateur Athletic Union announced that it has contacted Memphis police and launched its own investigation after ESPN reported on Friday that the organization’s longtime president, Bobby Dodd, allegedly sexually abused two young basketball players during the 1980s. Ralph West, now a 43-year-old who lives in Miami, and a man who requested anonymity told ESPN they independently confronted Dodd about the abuse last month after former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with sexual abuse. The second man said Dodd, 63, apologized for the abuse during an eight-minute phone conversation on Nov. 11. The men say the abuse occurred between the ages of 12 and 16, when they played basketball for Memphis-based AAU teams directed by Dodd. The men say Dodd fondled them and masturbated in front of them while they were in their teens. Neither man reported the abuse to the police. When an ESPN reporter contacted Dodd, the AAU’s top official since 1992, for comment, Dodd’s assistant responded with an email that said Dodd had cancer and had retired from the AAU on Nov. 29 for health reasons, the network said. Other AAU officials, however, said his departure was news to them. The sports organization said Dodd would not return and named an interim leader. West and the other man told ESPN that Dodd kept hundreds of photos of players’ clothed backsides and crotches in filing cabinets. He also had bags filled with dozens of pairs of teenage boys’ underwear with names and dates on them. Dodd also had samples of boys’ hair that he kept in envelopes or affixed to the dashboard of his car with petroleum jelly. West said he once found Dodd hiding in the attic of the coach’s home, in his underwear, with a video camera. Dodd, who had told players they could use his home to party with girlfriends because he would be out of town, was apparently trying to record West and a girl. The former player said Dodd offered him $1,000 if he agreed to let Dodd perform oral sex on him while he was blindfolded and bound. The anonymous player told ESPN that Dodd had plied him with alcohol and drugged him one night, and he believes the coach abused him while he was passed out. West said he had sent an email to the AAU’s compliance department on Nov. 9 alleging that Dodd was a pedophile because he was concerned the AAU leader still had access to children through his Memphis AAU club and as the head of a national organization that serves more than 500,000 children. Nobody followed up, he told ESPN.

Yo Gotti Says Zed Zilla ‘Could Be The Next One’

With Rent’s Due, ‘It’s time for me to show ’em what south Memphis about,’ Zed Zilla tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Zedzilla Photo: CMG Records Granted, Yo Gotti has yet to release his first major-label album, but the Memphis, Tennessee, spitter is thinking big. While fans await Gotti’s Live From the Kitchen (which he hopes will drop before the year ends), the “5 Star Chick” rapper is ready to further the career of his artist Zed Zilla, who will drop his Rent’s Due mixtape later this month. “We from two different sides: north Memphis, south Memphis,” Zed told Mixtape Daily before explaining how he and Gotti met. “I had a show one day, he had his ear to the streets, came to my show. I rocked it, he liked what he saw … we been click-clackin’ ever since.” Zed has actually been riding alongside Gotti since his 2008 mixtape, Cocaine Muzik . More recently, the pair collaborated on Gotti’s “Fire That Bitch,” a humorous break-up song from Cocaine Muzik 6 . Next up is Zilla’s Rent’s Due with DJ Bigga Rankin. The tape features appearances from Waka Flocka Flame, 2 Chainz and, of course, Gotti. The title is particularly fitting considering one of Zed’s rap aliases is “the Landlord.” “For me, with Rent’s Due, ain’t no way around rent; you gotta pay rent,” he said. “I’m here to collect rent. I been with [Gotti] for a minute, been around the world, did a lot of shows, now it’s time for me to show ’em what south Memphis about.” More than just his skills on the mic, Gotti made sure Zed Zilla was everything he claimed to be before signing him to his Cocaine Muzik Group record label. “First and foremost, you have to do your research and find out how close you is to that actual life you’re talkin’ about,” Gotti explained. “You could be the best lyricist or rapper or songwriter, if you ain’t mentally prepared to put in the work, it’s a waste of time. “When we done the research, [Zed] had all the ingredients that we were looking for,” he continued. “I think he could be the next one.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

West Memphis Three Free from Prison After Guitly Plea, Insist on Innocence

Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr. – who were convicted of murdering three Boy Scouts in 1993 and who have come to be known as “The West Memphis 3” – were released today after serving 18 years in prison. In an odd, legal twist, the trio entered a plea of guilty in court… and were subsequently set free. The case grew in stature and publicity over the last few years, as new DNA evidence came to light that cast doubt on the conviction. Two documentaries were made about the West Memphis 3, with celebrities such as Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines insisting on a retrial, and even showing up in court today. The families of two of the victims even joined forces with the defense, proclaiming that Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley Jr. were innocent. Following the threesome’s guilty plea, the lead prosecutor on the case issued a statement, excerpts from which read: “In light of these circumstances I decided to entertain plea offers that were being proposed by the defense. I NEVER considered ANY arrangement that would negate the verdicts of those two juries. Guilt or Innocence was NEVER ON THE TABLE. “Today’s proceeding allows the defendants the freedom of speech to SAY they are innocent, but the FACT is, they just pled GUILTY. I strongly believe that the interests of justice have been served today.” This arrangement is known as an “”Alford plea,” with defendants essentially admitting there was enough evidence to convict at the time of the trial, yet maintaining the right to state their innocence. Immediately following their release, Damien and Jessie held a press conference and insisted they served 18 years for a crime they “did not commit.” Jason is yet to comment.

For The Children: Memphis Launches ‘No, Baby’ Campaign In Response To High School Baby Boom

After Frayser High School put Memphis in the national spotlight, with as many as 90 students being pregnant or having recently given birth , the mayors of Memphis and Shelby County are ready to get to work to reverse the statistics. In a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. of Memphis and Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. of Shelby County, Tennessee, spoke to a room full of reporters about the recent news that there are some 90 girls at local Frayser High School who are currently pregnant or were pregnant and are now parents within the last year. “I want to make one thing clear — the matter of teenage pregnancy is not something that was invented in Frayser or Boxtown, or Midtown, or any particular part of our city,” Wharton said. “Frayser doesn’t have a patent or trademark on this issue. These are not statistics, these are people and tragically [the] most venerable people.” According to Luttrell, Tennessee ranks 42nd in the nation in terms of teen pregnancy but says that the teen pregnancy rate in his county is 20 percent higher than the states rate. Memphis City Schools curriculum offers 9th graders a family life education course that has a heavy emphasis on abstinence from sex outside of marriage. The school district is going to be rolling out a new “No Baby” program in hopes to help curtail the large number of teen pregnancies. The new program presented by Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that teaches women’s empowerment, will incorporate Facebook and text messaging as a part of the “in your face” efforts to teach the girls “how to say no” to sex. ‘No Baby’ will also push abstinence and will not give out any form of contraceptives. “Right now, these girls don’t know how to say ‘no,’ they’re having sex when they don’t want to, they just don’t know how to say ‘no,’” said Deborah Hester Harrison, Executive Director of Girls Inc. James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based organization focused on reducing teen pregnancy, HIV, and sexually transmitted diseases among young people, says that there’s strong evidence a comprehensive approach that includes abstinence and contraceptives is the best way to prevent teen pregnancy. “To only promote abstinence and to preclude contraceptives is unilateral disarmament in the face of the teen pregnancy crisis. We have to deploy all the tools and resources we have, and that means go with a comprehensive approach,” Wagoner said. “Common sense sort of tells you that with this volume of pregnancy young people are having sex and they’d be much better off providing sexually active young people with the tools to prevent teen pregnancy while you are encouraging young people not to engage in sex. That’s not only good science that’s basic common sense.” But one school official says the numbers that got everyone talking are not only wrong, they fail to paint an accurate picture of the real problem at Frayser. Dr. Kriner Cash, the Superintendent of Memphis City Schools, said that because of specialized programs at Frayser geared towards teens that are pregnant or have children, many students have transferred to Frayser to participate in these programs and that is likely where the number of 90 came from. “This notion that there are 90 pregnant students at Frayser high School right now is not true,” Cash said. “What is true is that there are programs at Frayser High School where young people who have babies and may be pregnant are coming or are already enrolled at Frayser to provide and get the kind of support that Dr. Turner and many other staff members there provide.” Cash said the problem is not just an issue with teens getting pregnant, but also an issue with “baby daddies,” and says it is happening to young girls for a “whole host of reasons.” One of the factors would certainly be the level of poverty at Frayser High. Nearly 100 percent of the students attending the school qualify for a free or reduced lunch program, and many are from single parent homes, or homes where teen pregnancy is generational. Mayor Wharton said in the press conference that this problem is “everybody’s challenge” and people need to look forward.
