Are Kanye And Jay-Z Delivering Watch The Throne Too Soon?

Critics weigh in on whether ‘Ye risks fans gorging on product while they’re still feasting on acclaimed Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Kanye West should be basking in the critical acclaim of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. He scored a number of year-end accolades for the project, including recognition from us here at MTV News. But a mere two months after the LP’s November release, the rapper’s already in promotional mode for his next project, Watch the Throne, a joint effort with Jay-Z . How did everything happen so fast? Jay-Z, of course, has been a prolific MC, having released six consecutive #1 albums, from 1998’s Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life to 2003’s The Black Album. And after a self-imposed exile, Kanye has proved to be just as productive as his mentor, including West’s three-month-long G.O.O.D. Fridays series, during which he released a new single each week. Back in October, during a lengthy sit-down, West casually told MTV News’ Sway that the Watch the Throne EP had evolved into a full-length album. “We putting out a whole album now,” he said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” According to ‘Ye, Jay-Z only has to write 10 verses (a hint?: the album will only be 10 songs), and West is collaborating with a bevy of producers, so his load will be substantially reduced as well. Another question, however, is whether fans will flock to the project so soon after snapping up West’s extravagant solo release. The early answer seems to be a resounding yes. “I think it’s smart because I imagine the two albums will be very different sonically, so it won’t be a case where one overshadows the other,” Complex senior editor Toshitaka Kondo told MTV News. “Also, when an artist is hot, their fans can’t get enough as long as the output is good. Young Money has had five or six different releases, including the Young Money album and projects from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the last 13 months, and I can’t see how it’s hurt any of them. I can’t see the sales of this album necessarily cannibalizing the sales from Kanye’s [last album] anyway. It’d be one thing if they were dropping within a few weeks of each other, but given how fast people consume music these days, six months is plenty of time.” Perhaps, though, instead of debating whether it’s too soon to put out the album, the more poignant thing to consider is this: arguably the two biggest stars in hip-hop want to make an album together ! “All artists need to find a way to combat falling record sales and meet fans’ desire for constant gratification — a new album from two of hip-hop’s biggest stars isn’t going to hurt,” the Amplifier ‘s Caryn Ganz said. “It could even renew interest in Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and encourage people to revisit it,” she said. “All the recent collaborations between these two have been very strong, like ‘Run This Town’ and ‘Monster,’ and Kanye seems to bring out a fascinating artiness in Jay. They just have to be careful that they don’t push it too far in an artsy, esoteric direction and lose their whole street base. But the timing doesn’t seem strange to me at all — strike while Kanye’s still making headlines for the right reasons, rather than wrong.” Do you think it’s too soon for Kanye and Jay to drop their Watch the Throne ? Britney, Gaga, Lil Wayne Lead 2011’s Most-Anticipated Albums

Offerings from Drake, Coldplay, Rick Ross, U2, Jay-Z and Kanye West and more also make our list of LPs to watch for this year. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears Photo: Jive 2010 went out with a bang thanks to blockbuster albums by Taylor Swift, Kanye West and Nicki Minaj , but 2011 looks to top that flurry of releases with an avalanche of fresh product from some of your favorite artists. While its release is still unconfirmed, one of the most anticipated discs of the year could drop as early as next week . That’s when Jay-Z and Kanye’s collabo album, Watch the Throne, hits shelves if comments made by Yeezy on New Year’s Eve are to be believed. Here’s a breakdown of some other important albums on tap for 2011. Hip-Hop The Jigga/’Ye hookup promises to be the first of many major rap events in the first half of the year, which is also expected to bring the long-awaited new disc from Lupe Fiasco, Lasers ; the full-length debut from Wiz Khalifa; as well as not-yet-titled new sets from Nas and 50 Cent. In addition to Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t and a possible Dipset reunion effort, fans are also awaiting release dates for Drake’s sophomore CD, Take Care, and the debut from buzzbomb MC/producer Jay Electronica , who holds the seal of approval from Roc Nation head Jay-Z. And after a delay caused by MCA’s (a.k.a. Adam Yauch) cancer scare, the Beastie Boys are planning a return with their eighth studio album, The Hot Sauce Committee, Part 2, in the spring. All of that could just be an appetizer, though, for the main event: the release of Lil Wayne’s first post-prison album, the hotly tipped Tha Carter IV, which has not yet received a street date. And there is, of course, the always tantalizing proposition of Dr. Dre finally dropping his years-in-the-making rap follow-up Detox, on which Eminem has recently said he’s been working with his mentor. Pop Since “Whip My Hair” became a viral sensation, fans have been hyped for the still-untitled debut from tween star Willow Smith , who has hinted she might remake one of dad Will’s signature hits. But it’s the next move from the queen of R&B, Beyonc

Justin Bieber: A Roundup Of The Year’s Fan Frenzies

The star’s appearances brought hysteria to malls, airports in 2010. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber in New Zealand in April Photo: Splash News Justin Bieber caused quite a frenzy in 2010. Everywhere he went, Bieber Fever quickly ensued, proving that the singer can hype up teenage girls anywhere he goes. It’s worth noting that Bieber’s hysteria-inducing appearances didn’t begin in 2010. He had one very historic mall appearance in 2009 whose consequences played out throughout this year. Back in November 2009, just as he was really taking off, in Long Island after crowds began to get out of control. Months later, in March 2010, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, was arrested in connection with the incident. He pleaded not guilty when police decided that he had not properly controlled the crowd . Bieber stood by his manager , launching the “Free Scooter” campaign. In February, the star was in Europe playing shows and doing press for his My World 2.0 album. While in Paris Bieber had to cancel an in-store appearance when the crowd began to get out of hand, swarming the store where Bieber was meeting with fans. He later apologized. Bieber was in Sydney, Australia , in April when he was set to appear on the Aussie talk show “Sunrise.” The show’s producers were forced to pull the plug early on in the appearance after audience members began to get injured when fans rushed the stage. Just a day later in New Zealand, Bieber was greeted by throngs of fans when he touched down at Auckland International Airport. Bieber later commented on the overzealous fan greeting , noting that someone stole his hat and knocked his mom down. He tweeted, “I don’t condone thievery!!” after the fans returned the hat to the star. In September, during a stop at Hooters in Canada, Bieber was greeted by a number of excited fans . The star handled the fans well, serenading them and somehow keeping them at bay. That brings us to the Boxing Day incident on Sunday. When Bieber decided to indulge in some post-holiday shopping in Canada, hundreds of fans decided to follow the star all over the mall. Needless to say, the manager at the Sunglass Hut, asked to close down the store for his arrival, was not pleased by the attention. Reese Witherspoon’s Love Life: From Ryan Phillippe To Jim Toth

As the actress announces her engagement, we review her dating history. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon in October 2006 Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Reese Witherspoon joined an ever-growing list of engaged celebrities Tuesday when she announced that she and boyfriend Jim Toth plan to tie the knot . Over the course of her public life, Witherspoon has been married once before (to Ryan Phillippe) and even dated Jake Gyllenhaal for quite a bit of time. With congratulatory wishes to Witherspoon and Toth, we take a look back at Witherspoon’s dating history. ( Check out photos of Reese with her past loves. ) Before meeting and marrying Phillippe, Witherspoon had been romantically linked to Jason London, Stephen Dorff, Chris O’Donnell and Mark Wahlberg, but it was Phillippe who Witherspoon settled on for about a decade. As the story goes, Phillippe arrived to Witherspoon’s 21st birthday party in 1997, where love bloomed. The “Cruel Intentions” co-stars got engaged in December 1998 and married in June 1999. The pair quickly started a family with the arrival of their daughter, Ava, in September of that year. Four years later, they welcomed their son, Deacon, in October 2003. Before they split in 2006, Witherspoon opened up about married life, noting that it wasn’t always easy. Revealing that she and Phillippe went to couple’s therapy, she said, “We’ve done that in the past, and it’s always struck me as odd that people grabbed onto that story and made it sound so negative. In what capacity is working on yourself or your marriage a bad thing? What marriage isn’t a journey? If you don’t have money to go to therapy, there’s always church. You can get together with groups and friends and talk about things with other couples.” After divorcing Phillippe in 2007, Witherspoon was spotted with her “Rendition” co-star Jake Gyllenhaal. The two tried to keep their relationship quiet, but after being photographed together multiple times, it was Phillippe who let the cat out of the bag. “It’s bizarre,” he told USA Today in March 2008 of seeing photos of the couple. Witherspoon herself eventually confirmed the relationship to Vogue in October of that year, calling Gyllenhaal “very supportive.” “Suffice it to say, I’m very happy in life, and I’m very lucky to have a lot of really supportive people around me who care very much for me, and, you know, that’s all you can hope for in life,” she said. “I am very blessed in that way.” But the couple was broken up by November 2009. After several months alone, Witherspoon began dating talent agent Jim Toth in February 2010. The pair’s announcement of their engagement Tuesday comes after nearly a year of dating. Witherspoon opened up to Glamour about being in a relationship with someone who’s not a celebrity, saying, “I have a little perspective on this. I wouldn’t say it’s easier. Every relationship has its own dynamic. And I don’t want to disparage any of the other relationships that I’ve had that were meaningful and wonderful. But what I’m finding out is that it’s very comfortable to be with somebody who understands my career, but doesn’t do what I do. He’s a great guy. He’s wonderful.” Send your well-wishes to Witherspoon and Toth in the comments section below! Related Photos Reese Witherspoon’s Dating History

Justin Bieber wants motorcycle gift

Justin Bieber is hoping for a motorbike for Christmas. The ‘Baby’ singer – who was given a car by his mentor Usher for his 16th birthday in March – would love to unwrap another vehicle from either the ‘OMG’ hitmaker or his mother. He said: “I got a car for my birthday, Usher helped buy it. Maybe he will get me another car for Christmas. “My mom is trying to figure out something to get me. I want a motorcycle. Not a big one, a little pocket one, a small miniature one which is really cool. I do like fast cars.” When asked what he was planning on buying his family, Justin said he wasn’t sure what he’d get them, but insisted they won’t be disappointed. He said: “I spoil my family, really.” Fans of Justin may not be able to spend Christmas with him in person, but will be able to console themselves with a range of Justin Bieber dolls which are being released. The toy line includes the ‘Justin Bieber Music Video Collection Singing Figures’ which play 30-second clips from his hits, ‘Baby’ and ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ and are styled in the same way he is in the music videos for those songs. There is also ‘The JB Style Collection’, which features Justin dolls in either his ‘Street Style, ‘Awards Style’ and ‘Red Carpet Style’. The dolls will be available in US stores priced between $17 and $30.

Lil Wayne And Eminem: Relive The MCs’ Past ‘SNL’ Glory

Before the duo hit the ‘Saturday Night Live’ stage, we look back on the rappers’ previous guest turns. By Paul Cantor Eminem and Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne and Eminem are set to appear as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Em and Wayne collaborated earlier this year on singles — Em on Wayne’s “Drop the World” and Wayne on Em’s “No Love” — and there’s a possibility they’ll perform both songs on the show. But this is far from either artist’s first tour of duty at Studio 8H. Here, we take a quick look back at the rappers’ past ‘SNL’ glory. September 2008 : Lil Wayne appeared one time, back in ’08, in an episode hosted by Olympian Michael Phelps. At the time, his album Tha Carter III was one of the year’s biggest sellers. Backed by the ‘SNL’ band and his Cash Money cohort (and current Young Money president) Mack Maine, Wayne performed “Got Money.” Decked out in a black leather biker jacket and violet-colored skinny jeans, Weezy ran through the song before introducing Mack, who closed the set. Wayne returned for “Lollipop,” dressed in a white V-neck T-shirt and grey jeans. He sang with a green-and-white electric guitar strapped to his torso and noodled his way through a few (out-of-key) chords toward the song’s close. October 2004 : Em’s history with ‘SNL’ stretches back to 1999, and he would continue to pop up on the sketch show over the years. In 2004, he appeared on an episode hosted by Kate Winslet. Wearing an oversize Detroit Tigers jersey, and flanked by D12 member Proof , Eminem performed the hilarious, bouncy “Just Lose It.” In a more serious moment, he also rapped “Mosh.” Dressed in all black, he passionately spit his George Bush-protest song, imploring viewers not to re-elect the U.S. president come Election Day, which was just weeks away. Then in May 2002 , Em guest-starred on an episode hosted by Kirsten Dunst, doing only one song this time, “Without Me.” The now-deceased Proof was Em’s hypeman on this stop too. Em also showed off his acting chops — his “8 Mile” was only a few months from its November release — taking part in an ‘SNL’ sketch , in which he played himself. October 2000 : In an episode hosted by Rob Lowe, Em made his first solo ‘SNL’ appearance. The Detroit MC was riding high off the success of The Marshall Mathers LP that year, and he performed two of the album’s biggest hits, “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan.” For “Stan,” he brought along Dido, who sang the song’s hook as Em waved his hands side to side. October 1999 : Eminem turned up on ‘SNL’ for the very first time alongside his mentor Dr. Dre back in the fall of 1999, in an episode hosted by Norm Macdonald. Dre brought Marshall along for a performance of “Forgot About Dre.” In baggy jeans, backward cap and puffy, goose-down jacket, Em spit his multisyllabic flow and bounced along to the catchy Dre beat. What do you hope Wayne and Em will perform on “SNL” Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Lil Wayne Eminem

Justin Bieber Is MTV News’ #3 Man Of The Year

In 2010, the pop star cleans up at awards shows, causes worldwide pandemonium — and turns 16. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Caulfield/AMA2010/Getty/DCP Justin Bieber seemingly did it all in 2010. He sold out concerts, filmed a movie, released two albums and set girls hearts aflutter — all in the span of 12 months. Not only is he arguably the biggest pop star in the world, he’s also pals with some of hip-hop’s biggest names (just ask Drake, Ludacris and Kanye West if you don’t believe us), and he chills with some of the prettiest girls in the game thanks to friendships with ladies like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) This really is Justin Bieber’s world, and we’re all just living in it. For a kid from a small town in Canada, Bieber’s meteoric rise to fame from Internet sensation to bona fide musical superstar may have seemed fast, but let’s face it: Bieber is the real deal. 2010 Highlights : Justin Bieber kicked off 2010 with his smash single “Baby.” He also showed his charitable side appearing on BET’s “SOS: Help for Haiti” telethon and lending his voice to the “We Are the World” remake . He was also a presenter at the Grammy Awards alongside Ke$ha. Bieber then went bowling with Drake and Ludacris in his “Baby” video and would later date the clip’s leading lady, Jasmine Villegas . In February, Justin caused hysteria in Paris during a trip to Europe, and then in March, he turned sweet 16, collaborated with Sean Kingston on the track “Eeenie Meenie” and had Aziz Ansari mock him in a Funny or Die clip he thought was “hilarious.” He also released his sophomore album, My World 2.0, which he promised would be “a lot of fun.” Bieber became the subject of his own “Diary” special in late March, released his video for “Never Let You Go” and made an appearance at the Teen Choice Awards. He kicked off April by taking over Funny or Die , where he joked, “I’m a star. I do what stars do. I ride on yachts. I autograph lady lumps.” That same month, Bieber once again showed his funny side on “Saturday Night Live,” where he was the night’s musical guest. He sat down with MTV News and thanked his fans for making him a constant Twitter trend . He shook up New Zealand and Australia, causing more fan hysteria, and by May, his fans were threatening the life of Kim Kardashian just for taking a Twitpic with him! In June, he hooked up with Jaden Smith for the “Karate Kid” track “Never Say Never.” He was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards and hung out with his mentor Usher in the “Somebody to Love” video . That same month, Bieber was a big winner at the Much Music Awards and kicked off his first-ever headlining tour . The second half of 2010 was just as busy for the star. In July, he and Lady Gaga battled it out for YouTube supremacy and announced he’d be on “CSI” and releasing a book . (He followed through on all those promises by year’s end.) By the end of August, Kanye West’s remix of “Runaway Love” hit the world, and it was announced that Bieber would be performing at the VMAs. He also filmed the concert portions of his 3-D movie at Madison Square Garden. JB hit the stage at the VMAs in September and even took home his first-ever Moonman . At the show, he shared with MTV News that “girlfriends are trouble.” He made his cameo on “CSI” and premiered his video for “U Smile,” and then in October, he revealed the name of his 3-D flick — “Never Say Never” — as well as the first trailer for the movie . In November, he released his book and his My Worlds Acoustic album and took home a few American Music Awards . And that brings us to December, when he sat down with Barbara Walters , made Google’s Zeitgeist list and went out for pancakes with Selena Gomez . If doing all that in 12 months isn’t reason enough to make Justin Bieber our #3 Man of the Year, then we’re not sure what can. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below! Related Videos Men And Women Of The Year 2010 Related Photos The Men & Women Of 2010

Alex Da Kid: Dr. Dre Trusted Me With ‘I Need A Doctor’

Producer talks to Mixtape Daily about Eminem-featuring Detox track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Behind the Beats: Alex Da Kid At this rate, Alex Da Kid might want to consider changing his name to Alexander Da Great pretty soon. The British beatsmith was nominated for two Grammys this week for his work on B.o.B’s blockbuster hit “Nothin’ On You” and Eminem’s chart-topper “Love the Way You Lie.” He also produced Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack.” While he only has a few placements under his belt, the producer has a knack for knocking what he does do out of the park. His next big single comes courtesy of his work with Dr. Dre. The veteran hip-hop producer invited Alex Da Kid to work with him on a track for his forthcoming Detox project, “I Need a Doctor” featuring Eminem. “That was amazing,” ADK told Mixtape Daily about the experience. “He’s one of my favorite producers of all time. Everybody knows how much of a perfectionist he is: He’s been working on his album for 11 years. For him to bring me in, trust me, not micro-manage me, and let me bring what I do to the table, I can’t even describe how that makes me feel.” The song recently arrived online, and on the number, Eminem attempts to turn the tables on his mentor. The MC credited Dre with being one of the people to help him out of his funk the past few years, so on “I Need a Doctor,” Em looks to repay the producer. “It hurts when I see you struggle/ You come to me with ideas/ You say they’re pieces, so I’m puzzled,” Eminem raps on the track. ” ‘Cause the sh– I hear is crazy/ But you’re either getting lazy/ Or don’t believe in you no more/ Seem like your own opinion is not one you can form/ Can’t make a decision/ You keep questioning yourself, second guessing/ It’s almost like you’re begging for my help/ Like I’m your leader; you’re supposed to be my mentor/ I can endure no more/ Don’t you remember who you are?” “I think it’s gonna be huge,” Alex Da Kid said. “It’s just my opinion, but it’s one of my favorite songs that I did and just what it means for hip-hop.” Next Wave of Flav
