Big Sean Praises Kanye West On ‘RapFix Live’

The Detroit rapper calls his mentor ‘one of the most nicest people out the hood.’ By Alvin Blanco Big Sean Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Plenty of people have opinions about Kanye West , but relatively few can say they formed them by being part of the rapper/producer’s inner circle. Big Sean has been running with Kanye since the Chicago hip-hop superstar was recording his third album, 2007’s Graduation. Yesterday on “RapFix Live,” the 2010 XXL magazine Freshmen alum spoke about the trepidation he felt when he first started working with Yeezy. “Being around a legend like that is nerve-racking,” Big Sean told MTV News. “It seemed like everything I brought him he would always be like, ‘Man come on, you need to do better, you need to do this,’ like when I first signed to him. I was always nervous, like, ‘Dang, he’s going to drop me, he think I’m wack.’ But I worked hard and now when I bring him music he’s like, ‘You going to be the greatest man. Yes, I knew you had it in you.’ He’s definitely the most intimidating person I’ve ever been in the studio with.” Since formally signing to G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, Big Sean has become one of Kanye’s go-to collaborators. Although the Detroit rapper does not drop a verse on Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he was on a number of the G.O.O.D. Fridays leaks, including “Good Friday,” “Don’t Look Down” and “Looking for Trouble.” Sean also was present for the album’s storied recording sessions in Hawaii, and shared one of its most humorous moments involving Kanye. “The atmosphere there was crazy,” Sean said. “One of the funniest stories of all time was when Kanye was making a beat in front of everybody in the room. And he was making a beat, making a beat, and everybody was just tuned in, like, ‘Dang, Kanye making a beat,’ and he was like, ‘I know what you’re thinking, Yes, Kanye West is making a beat right now.’ He kids around a lot.” Big Sean went on to assert that his mentor’s reputation for being difficult is overblown. “People think he has like a stuck-up attitude or is an a-hole or whatever, but he’s really one of the most nicest people out the hood,” Sean maintained. “I always say, ‘What kind of a-hole would get me out the hood and ride my mom around in his Maybach?’ ” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Big Sean Related Artists Big Sean Kanye West

CyHi Da Prynce On Kanye West: ‘He Pushes Me’

G.O.O.D. Music MC tells Mixtape Daily, ‘He’ll tell me when my verse is not as hot.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Harper CyHi Da Prince Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: CyHi Da Prynce CyHi Da Prynce likens the G.O.O.D. Music collective to superheroes, but you might be surprised to learn who he compares his crew to. “[Kanye] is Captain Planet and all our powers combined,” the upstart MC told Mixtape Daily, referencing the animated Planeteers. “I’m heart, Big Sean is water, Pusha T is fire and Teyana Taylor is Wind. So if you put it all together, it’s Captain Planet. He’s Captain Planet.” And maybe Mr. Hudson is Earth, but even without the final element, it’s hard not to give ‘Ye a nod for pushing his team to the forefront. The My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy star recently held court down in Texas, where he headlined a ballyhooed G.O.O.D. Music set at the South by Southwest music festival. Push, Cy and Jay-Z joined Mr. West for a formidable lineup. According to Da Prynce, it’s just another example of Yeezy’s hospitality, though, to hear the Georgia rapper tell it, it’s really his mentor’s honesty that sets him apart, for better or worse. “I wish you guys could really be around him,” CyHi said. “The misconception … it’s like this, you know how you say something about somebody behind their back, and then when you see them you have to be politically correct and you don’t say what you want to say to them? I don’t feel like that’s right. Some people have to be honest with each other, ’cause sometimes you can’t let a situation escalate to a point where it’s out of control. “Honesty is the biggest thing to me and that’s what I love about [Kanye],” he continued. “He’ll tell me when my verse is not as hot. Most of your friends will tell you you’re dope because you’re already naturally dope. But he pushes me and challenges me to be better. And he does that in music, art, fashion and so many other things to the point where I take it as constructive criticism. Especially to someone that sold all these records, he didn’t sell them for nothing. Don’t shoot the messenger all the time, just get the message.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Cy Hi Da Prince, Pusha T

By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Audrey Kim Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News When Lil Wayne makes a request, Nicki Minaj delivers. Considering she quickly ascended to rap royalty after Weezy signed her to his Young Money roster, she owes the New Orleans rapper a debt of gratitude. Justin Bieber Goes Back In Time For Grammy Performance

Bieber starts performance with ‘Baby’ and footage from ‘Never Say Never,’ with mentor Usher by his side. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs during the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: The Recording Academy/CBS When Eva Longoria hit the Grammy stage to introduce Justin Bieber ‘s performance, she reminded the world that only a few years ago, Bieber was hustling just to get his music heard. She then introduced a clip from his just-released movie, “Never Say Never,” that gave an inside look at a 2007 meeting between Bieber and his mentor, Usher, during which Bieber sang for him. As the clip played out, Bieber sat on the stage, an acoustic guitar on his lap, and Usher came out to chat with the star. “Yeah, that was four years ago. That’s how it started,” Usher said. “You told me if it was meant to be, we would meet again,” a leather-clad Bieber responded when Usher explained that he didn’t listen to him sing until their second encounter. “That’s right, and now it’s your time,” Usher said, before Bieber, who was singing in a much lower octave than fans are used to, started playing an acoustic version of “Baby.” Check out photos of Justin Bieber and all the 2011 Grammy performances . Soon ninjas playing drums came down the aisles pounding out the beat to “Never Say Never” as Bieber was joined onstage by acrobats. Jaden Smith then popped up from the stage and rapped his part of the song. When Smith left the stage, Usher came on, singing a bit of “OMG,” wearing sleek military-type garb surrounded by similarly attired dancers performing pop-and-lock moves. Justin then joined him toward the end of the song to display some of his own dancing skills, and sang the final bars of the song with his mentor. “I am going to [perform and] I’m gonna have some surprises there,” Bieber recently told MTV News about the performance. “We got some other performers that are going to be there with me, Jaden and Usher, so I’m really excited about it. Jaden’s cool. He’s gonna kick it. He’s gonna kill it. I’m excited.” Usher also gave us a preview the big performance, noting that it was just about having a good time. “The performance will be fun,” Usher explained. “We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. … This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn’t believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He’s going to play acoustically, and also, we’ll get down a little bit.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond.
