Tina Brown: Glenn Beck Is ‘The White Malcolm X…It’s White Racial Politics’

Tina Brown, the founder and editor of the online publication the “Daily Beast,” said Sunday that conservative talk show host Glenn Beck “has become sort of the white Malcolm X.” Chatting with Howard Kurtz on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Brown said of Beck, “I think that he’s a fascinating demagogue, actually.” She continued, “It’s white racial politics, in a sense, because he’s really saying — a lot of his message is, you know, that Obama is a racist.”  And continued, “[Beck] talks about God, but when you drill down to what he’s actually saying, he calls [Obama] a Nazi and socialist who’s taking over the country. I mean, his language is extremely inflammatory” (video follows with transcript and commentary):  HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: On this same topic, Glenn Beck has become an influential and certainly divisive figure after that Lincoln Memorial rally, that huge rally. Do you see him as something of a cultural phenomenon? What’s your take? TINA BROWN, CO-FOUNDER, “THE DAILY BEAST: Well, I do. I think that he’s a fascinating demagogue, actually. He really is a demagogue. And he has become sort of the white Malcolm X in a strange way. I mean, the way he goes out there with this kind of very — he’s very much kind of — it’s white racial politics, in a sense, because he’s really saying — a lot of his message is, you know, that Obama is a racist. You know, I mean, all the stuff that we keep hearing about “Hussein Obama” and the references to Obama being undoubtedly kind of racist, really, in all the terminology. KURTZ: He’s backed off that a little bit, and now he seems to be talking a lot about God and America — BROWN: Yes, he talks about God, but when you drill down to what he’s actually saying, he calls him a Nazi and socialist who’s taking over the country. I mean, his language is extremely inflammatory. And he likes to play it now revivalists, religious bring it together. But he’s playing a double game, because actually he’s a hypocrite. And he’s a Tea Party hypocrite. He’s preaching one thing and he’s actually being another. Notice how Kurtz laughed when Brown called Beck a hypocrite and a Tea Party hypocrite.  Not very professional, Howie.   As for Brown, given her absurd comments, you wonder if she’s actually ever spent any time listening to Beck or if she’s relied on far-left leaning websites and MSNBC to form her opinion. I opt for the latter – how ’bout you?

CBS: Even With Susan Boyle ‘Warm-Up Act’ Pope Still Couldn’t Pull In A Big Enough Crowd

Reporting on Pope Benedict’s visit to the UK on Friday’s CBS Early Show, correspondent Mark Phillips noted how 65,000 people attended a Thursday outdoor mass in Scotland, but observed: “…it was only about a quarter of the size of the crowd Pope John Paul drew to the same park on his visit 28 years ago. And this crowd had a much better warm-up act…TV talent show star…Susan Boyle.” On Thursday , correspondent Richard Roth touted low turnout predictions during the Papal visit: “Some Church officials this morning were already lowering expectations, saying seats were still unsold for several outdoor events.” Phillips described the trip as “A test of whether Pope Benedict can get his message across over the background noise of the Church’s child abuse scandal. And that test gets harder as time goes on.” He went on to observe “This Pope finds himself with an ironic challenge, he bemoans the weakening role of religion in everyday life, yet it is the Church’s very own public struggle with its child-molesting priests that is helping to drive people away.” Phillips concluded his report by highlighting the Pope’s critics: “And, of course, the protesters against child abuse, for gay rights and other issues, promise to follow him wherever he goes.” On Thursday , Roth proclaimed the Pontiff’s visit was “bound to be shadowed by controversy along with ceremony” and  “courts criticism on a range of issues.” Here is a full transcript of Phillips’s September 17 report: 7:10AM ET SEGMENT: JEFF GLOR: Today is the second day of the Pope’s historic visit to Great Britain. And today he meets the leader of the Anglican church. This morning, Pope Benedict went to an outdoor prayer meeting at a school outside London. And CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips is in Twickenham this morning. Mark, good morning. MARK PHILLIPS: Good morning, Jeff. Well, this is, in fact, turning out to be more than just a Papal visit, it’s turning into a test. A test of whether Pope Benedict can get his message across over the background noise of the Church’s child abuse scandal. And that test gets harder as time goes on. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Papal Pilgrimage; Pope Benedict XVI Confronts Controversies in UK] Pope Benedict brought his message to the classroom today, visiting a Catholic school in suburban London. This Pope finds himself with an ironic challenge, he bemoans the weakening role of religion in everyday life, yet it is the Church’s very own public struggle with its child-molesting priests that is helping to drive people away. POPE BENEDICT XVI: The life of faith can only be effectively nurtured when the prevailing atmosphere is one of respectful and affectionate trust. PHILLIPS: Pope Benedict has proved on this trip that he can still draw a crowd. Yet, impressive though the 65,000-strong open-air mass in Scotland was yesterday, it was only about a quarter of the size of the crowd Pope John Paul drew to the same park on his visit 28 years ago. And this crowd had a much better warm-up act, the former Scottish choir girl turned TV talent show star and internet sensation, Susan Boyle, who sang a medley of her hits. This is being billed as Pope Benedict’s most political day of the visit. He meets with the Archbishop of Canterbury, as you said, and he also gives a speech to British parliamentarians. And, of course, the protesters against child abuse, for gay rights and other issues, promise to follow him wherever he goes. Jeff. GLOR: Alright, Mark Phillips, this morning. Mark, thank you very much.

Bike-Happy, Ped-Friendly Cities Less Obese

Photo credit Kiwi Flickr . Cars make you fat . That’s more or less the message noted researcher John Pucher has tirelessly delivered, making the case for cycling and walking – “active transportation” – as a way for cities to deal with creeping obesity rates and climbing health costs. Now, in a new analysis of U.S., European, and Australian cities, Pucher and his colleagues press the point home even a little further by showing that cities with the highest percentage of trips by foot and by bike have the lowest le… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Open Thread: ‘Will Barack Obama Be a One-term President?’

“Yes, he might last that long,” Politico’s Roger Simon states in response to his own question. Honest to goodness, the man just does not get it. He might be forced to pull a Palin and resign before his first term is over. He could go off and write his memoirs and build his presidential library. (Both would be half-size, of course.) I am not saying Obama is not smart; he is as smart as a whip. I am just saying he does not understand what savvy first-term presidents need to understand: You have to stay on message, follow the polls, listen to your advisers (who are writing the message and taking the polls) and realize that when it comes to doing what is right versus doing what is expedient, you do what is expedient so that you can get reelected and do what is right in the second term. If at all possible. And it will help your legacy. And not endanger the election of others in your party. And not hurt the brand. Or upset people too much. Do you concur with that assessment, or is Simon being too cynical? Remember to give some examples to back up your point.

Lady Gaga Explains Lollapalooza Crowd-Surfing

‘I don’t know what came over me,’ Gaga says of crashing Semi Precious Weapons set. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga crowd-surfs with Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter on Friday at Lollapalooza Photo: Bronques at Last Nights Party Last week in Chicago, Lady Gaga felt the power of Lollapalooza overtake her when she jumped onstage with her pals the Semi Precious Weapons and decided to crowd-surf . It was a moment her “little monsters” eagerly welcomed. On Wednesday (August 11), she called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and explained that she hadn’t planned it; she just really wanted to crowd-surf. “I was so excited ’cause I haven’t crowd-surfed in a long time ’cause no one lets me anymore,” Gaga said. “It was great,” she continued. “I love Semi Precious so much and they’re my band … I don’t know what came over me. I just got so excited and I remember playing that stage and what it felt like and they were doing such a great job. … I just jumped.” The Semi Precious performance isn’t all that’s gotten Gaga all jumpy lately. The recent overturning in California of Prop 8 banning same-sex marriage was also inspiring to her. “I felt like it was a revolution, a gunshot went off. It was so exciting when it happened. For me, it was a moment that indicates it can happen in every state now,” she said. Gaga was so excited by the ruling that she decided to pen more music. “I was so happy, and I went right into the studio and I kept writing,” she said. “[My album] kind of is done, but I can’t stop writing music. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I might have to put out two records.” Gaga didn’t spill too many beans about the next album but noted that she already had a thesis of sorts for it. “I never stop writing, so even when my album’s done, I’m always working,” she explained. “When I put this album together, I wanted to write the album in an innovative way. I want the message to be innovative. I already have the sonic ideas and the message ideas. … I basically asked friends of mine to produce the record with me, and we’re called the banditos.” What was your favorite Lollapalooza moment?
