The great Howard Stern was on the Kevin Mathews show one day promoting something. Mathews was a nobody in the world of radio and Howard was the shock jock king of radio. Somewhere along the conversation Kevin mathews brought up Jim Shorts as his sidekick and Howard wanted to hear it. Howard had obviously had ever listened to this local boko radio show. He heard Jim Shorts voice which is actually Keven Mathews himself and just laughed. Howard asked if he was serious about having that as part of his show. When Mathews insisted that it was Howard said it was cute. That was a total dis to the on air talents of this Kev Head and the ego that was in it. There was Kevin Mathews was a suckie radio host that got more and more arrogant as years passed away. like Jay Marvin, I don’t know if he is still alive, but if he isn’t there will always be a place for him to work at this blog.

Howard Stern NEW YORK, NY – On May 1, 2010 in the New York News Today website, there is a good article by Small Business Marketing Coach, J D Moore entitled, 5 Things Howard Stern Can Teach You About Small Business Marketing . Good call by Mr. Moore. Who would expect such business acumen from a radio “shock jock” and who would even bother to pay attention? It just “shows to go ya” that people will surprise you so it pays to pay attention. Howard Stern’s advice is right on the money. He clearly demonstrates that he has a good sense of business and the branding that is necessary for success. I’m not a fan of Howard Stern. I don’t particularly like his brand of entertainment. But I have to hand it to him because he’s good at what he does. Here is a summary of the points in the article: 1. Tightly Targeted Market Know your audience and consistently give them what they want. This is what Howard Stern does. He knows his audience. He is unapologetic. He doesn’t water down what he does or try to make it more palatable for a bigger audience. Keep a tight focus on what you have to offer. This makes it more likely that your brand will be known and recognized. By targeting his market very tightly he has built an audience of millions of very dedicated fans. He knows that some people won’t like him, and he’s fine with that. Small business marketing should be tightly focused. It is true that many people will be disqualified from becoming your customers, but if there are enough of them, then you’ll stand a better chance of finding them and keeping them. 2. Consistent Brand Make sure your message is always the same. Don’t waffle about. Keep it consistent. Brand recognition depends on a consistent message or consistent quality. When you tune in to Howard Stern you’ll always know what you’re going to get. People who like him will always come back for more because his message is always the same. They know what to expect from Howard Stern and they can rely on it. He always delivers. Customers are usually loyal because they go to a lot of trouble to find what they want and they like to keep it that way. Don’t take advantage of customer loyalty or you’ll lose them. It takes a lot of effort and expense to get new customers and a lot less to keep them as long as you keep delivering what they want. One bad buying experience is enough for you to lose them. Customers become accustomed to consistent quality and they expect it. 3. Authentic Branding Be sincere. Be honest. Don’t try to pull the wool over the customer’s eyes. Customers are not stupid. They know when they’re being lied to. With Howard Stern you get the sense that he is 100% honest and that he is putting his real self forward. When he takes the microphone, his story appears to be authentic. He is not afraid to present himself in an unflattering light. Today there is a movement in marketing to present a truly authentic message. People have learned not to trust advertising, so today’s consumers are a lot more savvy than those of the past. BS just doen’t sell, so marketers need to find more honest and sincere ways to connect to their audience. Self-deprecating marketing is not always recommended, but it has worked in the past. Avis built their marketing reputation around the slogan, “We try harder” because they we’re number 2 behind Hertz Rent-A-Car. 4. Multiple Channel Presence We have a future article planned around this one point. Find and use multiple channels of distribution for your product or service. Howard Stern is known primarily for his radio show, but he had a successful running TV show and has also made successful forays into books, movies, and the Internet. Good marketing should reach it’s target via multiple channels. Every small business should have a website, an email list and do direct mail. You should create customer referral programs and get customers to become your salespeople. If you have a brick-and-mortar location, you should have a nice, attractive space, have good signage and advertise locally. You can also sponsor events and speak in front of groups. As a small business owner, you need to constantly remind people who you are and what you have to offer. 5. Embrace Technology This is one point where a small business could easily fall behind – especially for those who are not tech savvy or slow to adapt to new technology. Howard Stern recently moved from free commercial radio to paid Sirius satellite radio. He also does On-Demand cable broadcasting. These moves demonstrate that he’s on the cutting edge of technology. Radio will be changed forever because the audience he will bring with him will bring economic pressures to bear upon it. Technology can give a small business the leverage it can use to compete with larger companies who have more resources. Technology resources are cheap but far-reaching. A small business owner can use web sites, podcasts, blogs, email lists, message boards and forums and social networking to reach millions of people. The communications tools available to small business are mind boggling. If you are not comfortable with technology, then you should step outside your comfort zone and get some education. Attend classes and seminars and read publications to stay up to date. Make some new friends … get with it. ‘I think the message is more important than who’s giving it,’ Tip says of his middle school visit, on ‘The Wendy Williams Show.’ By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ Getty Images T.I. won over fans and court officials alike last year when he starred in the MTV show “Road to Redemption.” In the series, viewers followed the Atlanta MC as he counseled troubled kids about avoiding the mistakes he’d made. Filmed before he went to prison on weapons charges in June 2009, “Redemption” also helped satisfy the requirements of Tip’s reduced sentencing deal , which included 1,000 hours of community service. But not everyone was moved by the rapper’s progression. In April, some parents of students at a Georgia middle school were upset after learning that T.I. visited as a featured speaker. Parents were not notified before the rapper’s appearance. T.I. responded to the criticism in an interview with talk show host Wendy Williams. He told Williams that before lashing out against him — parents should ask their kids what they’d learned. “Well, to be perfectly honest, speaking freely if I may, I honestly believe that they should more concerned with the message than the guy giving the message,” the rapper said during Friday’s episode. “I think they should have asked their children, ‘What did you hear? What did he say?’ The complaints came after the fact. I think they should have asked, ‘What did this guy tell you?’ I think the message is more important than who’s giving it. Because if it had been an accountant, a dentist, someone else coming in giving the same message, the message wouldn’t have been received.” Last year, in an interview with MTV News, Tip opened up about the heart-to-heart conversations he was having with children, and said he would continue to give the talks ever after his release from prison. He addressed specifically the kids he had mentored on “Road to Redemption.” “[I know] they desire to,” Tip said of his impression that the at-risk youth wanted to do good. “Of course, they don’t ride around with T.I. every moment of every day of their life — when they’re not with me, they’re back in their environment that they were in before they met me,” he explained. “The people they spend most of their time around can have a negative influence on their decision-making sometimes. A lot of times they can overcome that negative influence, sometimes it’s half and half. They still go to school, get good grades, do the right thing. When they come home, sometimes they’re kicking it here and kicking it there, doing things — they might not do it as much as they used to.” What do you think about T.I.’s comments? If Los Angeles wants to boycott Arizona, it had better get used to reading by candlelight. That's the message from a member of Arizona's top government utilities agency, who threw down the gauntlet Tuesday in a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa by threatening to cut off the city's power supply as retribution. Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote the letter in response to the Los Angeles City Council's decision last week to boycott the Grand Canyon State — in protest of its immigration law — by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses. Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider. “Doggone it — if you're going to boycott this candy store … then don't come in for any of it,” Pierce told FoxNews.com. In the letter, he ridiculed Villaraigosa for saying that the point of the boycott was to “send a message” by severing the “resources and ties” they share. “I received your message; please receive mine. As a statewide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona's electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the 'resources and ties' we share with the city of Los Angeles,” Pierce wrote. “If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation.” Appearing to tap into local frustration in Arizona over the raft of boycotts and threatened boycotts from cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Pierce warned that Arizona companies are willing and ready to fight boycott with boycott. “I am confident that Arizona's utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands,” Pierce wrote. “If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona's economy.” Pierce told FoxNews.com that he was speaking for himself, not the entire commission, though he has the support of at least one other member. But Arizona has some serious leverage over Los Angeles, as well as the rest of California. The state and city get electricity from a nuclear power plant outside Phoenix, as well as from coal-fired power plants in northern Arizona and two giant hydroelectric power generators along the Colorado River. Despite that, the Los Angeles City Council voted overwhelmingly last week to ban future business with Arizona — a decision that could cost Arizona millions of dollars in lost contracts. Los Angeles officials were furious with the Arizona immigration law passed last month and joined local officials in cities across the country in pushing boycotts to register their dismay. Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling and civil rights abuses. Arizona officials have defended the law, saying the state needed to take its illegal immigration problem into its own hands. Pierce said he's “supportive” of the state's efforts to control the border. The law requires local law enforcement to try to verify the immigration status of anyone they have contact with whom they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. It empowers them to turn over verified illegal immigrants to federal custody. The legislation explicitly prohibits screening people based solely on race or national origin. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/19/arizona-official-threatens-cut-los-an… added by: IndustryRule

Great news on the Bret Michaels front today A week after suffering a brain hemorrhage , the hospitalized rock star is responding positively to tests and treatment. According to the latest message on his website, doctors are optimistic that Michaels will make a full recovery. “We thank you all for your continued support and outpouring of well wishes for Bret,” reads the website posting. “While additional studies are planned throughout the week to hopefully detect the exact cause of the rupture Bret will remain monitored closely by his medical team to make sure no further complications occur.” Not only might Bret be back on his feet shortly, but reps are hoping he’ll actually be back on the stage. “Provided there are no further complications or setbacks,” the message continues, he’ll resume his Roses & Thorns tour on May 26 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He might even reschedule the shows this incident caused him to cancel. What a trooper! A tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd in June and July isn’t even out of the question for Michaels, sources say. If he pulls all this off, we promise to never make fun of Michaels again for singing inappropriate lyrics to a 17-year old . Way to go, Bret!
