LaLa Vazquez and Carmelo Anthony: Married!

It’s (finally) official! After a five-year engagement, actress/MTV VJ LaLa Vazquez and NBA star Carmelo Anthony married in New York City Saturday night. Adorably, their 3-year-old son, Kiyan, escorted them to the altar. About 320 people, including pals Kim Kardashian and Ciara, were on hand to watch LaLa walk down the aisle in a Vera Wang gown, adorned with flowers. Carmelo proposed in 2005 with an 8-carat cushion-cut diamond, but later added 2 1/2-more carats with two matching wedding bands, worth $200,000. “They are ready to party!” Kevin Osbourne, who led the band that played during dinner, said. “A lot of soul and R&B. Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder.” DJ Clue was also scheduled to spin. Congratulations to Carmelo Anthony and LaLa Vazquez! In the run-up to the big day, LaLa Vazquez joked that wedding planning was wearing her out, even though planner Mindy Weiss was handing the details. “I’m seeing the pre-wedding stress increase… The guest list went from this to that [indicating larger]. I’m trying to control it. It’s, like, over the top now!” Glad it worked out. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Eminem, Justin Bieber Are Rare Exceptions As Album Sales Fall

Midyear figures show sales are down 11 percent over same period last year. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Thanks to Eminem , Justin Bieber , Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum , record sales for the first half of 2010 weren’t totally in the toilet. But strong sellers from those artists only helped slow the bleeding of an industry that has suffered declining annual sales for much of the past decade. According to midyear figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan on Thursday, overall U.S. album sales fell 11 percent in the first six months of the year to 213.7 million, down from the 232.8 million in sales during the same period in 2009. Between January 4 and July 4 physical album sales fell to 154 million, down from the 172.9 million over the same 26-week period in 2009. But while CD sales were sliding again, digital album sales were up by 13.7 million to 42 million. Sales of digital tracks were mostly flat, down .2 percent to 597 million. “Strong releases in 2010 have helped to slow the decline of new album sales,” said David Bakula, senior VP of analytics at Nielsen Entertainment, in a statement. “Albums by Eminem, Justin Bieber, Lady [Antebellum], Lady Gaga and Sade have each sold more than a million copies so far this year, and Lady A’s Need You Now has sold more than 2.3 million albums, surpassing last year’s best seller of this time period by a million units.” Eminem’s Recovery quickly passed the 1 million mark in two weeks and Drake’s Thank Me Later appears poised to reach that watermark within the month. Things are likely to be even more grim in the second half of the year in light of 2009’s second-half sales boost in the wake of Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death. After the King of Pop’s passing, fans snatched up millions of his solo and Jackson 5 CDs and digital tracks, boosting sales figures in an otherwise flat period. Jackson could help out again in the fall if a promised album of previously unreleased material hits shelves in time for the holidays. That LP, along with albums from T.I., Kanye West and Katy Perry in the coming months, could help boost the industry’s bottom line. What Will Lindsay Lohan’s Jail Time Be Like?

Legal experts say it will be difficult but not dangerous. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan in court on Tuesday Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan already knows what jail is like, but unlike the 84 minutes of a one-day sentence she served on her 2007 DUI conviction, this time the troubled actress is looking at a minimum of 23 days in light of the 90-day sentence imposed on her by Judge Marsha Revel on Tuesday for probation violations. A panel of legal experts contacted by MTV News said the sentence is serious business and it will be very hard on the 5-foot-5, 105-pound actress but all agreed that she won’t be in any physical danger. “It will be the same as it was with Paris [Hilton],” said New York attorney Scott Leemon, whose client list includes Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Young Jeezy and Tony Yayo. “She’ll have her own private cell in segregation, and she will be protected. It won’t be easy, but she won’t be put in general population. They don’t want the liability if someone does something to her.” At the very least, Leemon predicted the jail stint — Lohan will likely only serve 25 percent of her 90-day stretch due to severe overcrowding in L.A. County jails — could help scare the troubled actress straight. “She’s definitely more scared than she’s ever been in her life this morning,” said Leemon, who is not involved in the case but has been following it in the news. “She gets the point. The question is: What will she do about it? And did she get the point before she went to court yesterday? Hopefully this will wake her up, because she’s got a rough six months ahead of her.” Having a celebrity like Lohan in their jail is a bit of nightmare for the L.A. County authorities, because protecting a high-profile prisoner from any harm is a major headache, said Stacey Richman, who knows about that particular situation considering her client, Lil Wayne, is currently in New York’s Rikers Island prison doing a one-year stretch on a gun charge. “It’s going to be tremendously unpleasant for her, like it is for Wayne. … She won’t enjoy this in the least,” Richman said. “It’s not in the interest of any state authority to let anything happen to her … but it seems to me that she’s in crisis, and this could be a good thing.” The jail time is actually not the hardest part of what Lohan will face over the next six months, according to veteran attorney Benjamin Brafman, who was part of the legal team defending the late Michael Jackson in the singer’s 2004 child-molestation trial and who helped keep Diddy out of jail in his 2001 Club New York gun case. “The jail part is the most humiliating part, and it interferes with her career,” Brafman said. “But that will be short and over, and it will pass rather quickly. The real difficult part comes after jail, where she faces the demons that sent her to jail to begin with.” Brafman also didn’t think Lohan would be in any physical danger while behind bars, because the Los Angeles Police Department is used to dealing with prisoners of note who require segregation and protection. “It’s not prison, but she will have to obey the rules, which will be a harsh reality.” Lohan’s attorney could not be reached for comment at press time. Was Lindsay Lohan’s Sentence Too Harsh?

Legal experts were surprised by 90-day jail term. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan in court Tuesday Photo: MTV News With tears running down her face, Lindsay Lohan looked shocked Tuesday when Judge Marsha Revel sentenced the 24-year-old actress to 90 days in jail to be followed by 90 days in an inpatient rehab facility after hearing evidence that Lohan had missed weekly alcohol-education classes . She wasn’t the only one surprised by the harshness of the sentence for the parole violation from Lohan’s pair of 2007 DUI arrests . Three prominent attorneys (who are not involved in the case) contacted by MTV News said Revel was clearly trying to send a message to Lohan with her ruling. “What she’s probably experiencing is a judge who, having given an opportunity that would have been given to anyone in this case and having it flaunted by not being responsive to the direction of the court, is taking action,” said Stacey Richman, who defended rapper Lil Wayne in the gun case that landed him in prison for a year. “The fact that the court gave her three times what the people had asked for [prosecutors requested a 30-day sentence] is surprising, and in some cases you read that as a ‘celebrity tax,’ but if she’s flaunted her probation not once, but three or four times , the judge has been very kind in giving her so many opportunities to stay with the program.” Richman speculated that the sentence was intended to promote respect for the law and teach Lohan that if she is court-ordered to attend a program, she can’t pick and choose when and how she does it. Another lawyer who has had plenty of experience defending celebrity clients, New York’s Benjamin Brafman, said the sentence is clearly harsh but that there are only so many times you can test a judge’s patience before they make you pay the price. “It seems to me that the court went out of its way to avoid a sentence of incarceration and it, unfortunately, did not make an impression,” said Brafman, whose clients have included Diddy, Michael Jackson and New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress. “What you see here is a bigger picture that is more troubling than whether this young woman goes to jail for a couple months or not,” he added. “This is a celebrity spiraling out of control, and in general, when that happens, unless serious intervention takes place, it can lead to more severe consequences than going to jail or rehab. … This is a person who needs to understand how easy it is for her life and her talent and celebrity status to be gone in a heartbeat.” After logging hundreds of hours in court working on behalf of everyone from 50 Cent, Tony Yayo and Young Buck to Busta Rhymes and Young Jeezy, attorney Scott Leemon knows that sometimes judges surprise you, but after all he’s seen, even he was a bit taken aback by Revel’s sentencing. “I think it was really harsh, especially in light of the fact that she was basically compliant as of yesterday’s court date to be done by [July] 15th,” he said of Lohan’s court-mandated schedule of alcohol-education courses. In testimony on Tuesday, the co-owner of the Right On program Lohan was enrolled in said she violated the program several times by failing to attend courses and missed classes on nine different occasions. “This judge just wanted to prove a point that no one messes with her in her court. I’ve had clients mess up on probation, but even when the prosecution asked for only 30 days, she gave her 90 plus 90 of inpatient? Without a doubt, this decision was made by the judge [after] she felt disrespected by Lindsay, who didn’t seem like she got the point.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan

Lady Gaga Overtakes Obama On Facebook: Fans Weigh In!

‘Her outfits are sexy and she’s just crazy,’ Gaga’s fan explain about her Facebook popularity. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News NEW YORK — It goes without saying that Lady Gaga’s little monsters are as devoted to her as she is to them. So when news broke that Gaga had surpassed President Barack Obama in her number of Facebook followers , it really wasn’t a surprise to the Little Monsters MTV News spoke with after her opening night show at Madison Square Garden in New York. “Lady Gaga definitely passed Obama with the number of fans on Facebook cause she’s awesome,” Cathy said. “Her outfits are sexy and she’s just crazy.” Laura proudly flaunted her membership to the Mother Monster fan club proclaiming, “I’m a fan of her Facebook page. I’m one of the 10 million — really!” And it seems a key to the success of beating out the president on Facebook is the fact that Gaga isn’t a politician. “When you get into politics things get very, very sketchy and I think that’s why she managed to gain more fans than he did,” Frankie explained. “Cause as risqu

Lindsay Lohan’s Fingernail Message In Court: Legal Experts Weigh In

Lawyers don’t think it impacted her sentence but was immature and bad form. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan at her court hearing on July 6 Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images As if further proof was needed, Lindsay Lohan cemented her bad-girl status Tuesday during a probation violation hearing by writing the message “f— u” on her fingernail . But did the profane memo on the nail of her middle finger land the formerly promising actress a harsher sentence? Legal experts contacted by MTV News don’t think so but all agreed that, at best, it was bad form, and at worst, it was another example of a young Hollywood starlet who appears to be out of control and not seriously considering the repercussions of her actions. New York attorney Benjamin Brafman — who defended Diddy in his 2001 Club New York gun case, New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress in his 2008 gun case and was on the defense team for the 2004 Michael Jackson child-molestation trail — said sometimes celebrities are their own worst enemies in court. “If this happened the way it did, the lawyer needs to take charge,” he said. Brafman, who is not involved in the Lohan case and has no firsthand knowledge of what happened in court Tuesday, added that Lohan doesn’t seem to be doing herself any favors with these kinds of outbursts. “I don’t think that influenced [the sentence] … and [it should have] no role in the proceedings, but it’s bad form, childish and at some point, you need to grow up about stuff like this,” he said. “When you’re in a position of begging for your freedom, you don’t need to do anything to antagonize the judge who has that power over you.” Lohan, 24, was sentenced to 90 days in jail to be followed by 90 days in rehab after judge Marsha Revel determined that the “Mean Girls” star had violated her probation from a 2007 DUI case by missing weekly alcohol-education classes . Closeups of photos taken by The Associated Press revealed that Lohan had the message “f— u” imprinted on the rainbow-airbrushed nail of her middle finger, which she frequently pressed to her lips and cheek during Tuesday’s hearing. At press time, it was unclear if Lohan entered the courtroom with the profane nail tat or if she scribbled it on during the course of the nearly daylong hearing. “She’s like anybody else and she has the right of free speech,” said attorney Stacey Richman, who defended rapper Lil Wayne in a New York gun case that sent the MC to prison for a year but does not have firsthand knowledge of the Lohan case. “But you should have respect for the forum. It’s unclear who it was meant for, but the judge is a logical person and not vindictive. So whatever the judge’s decisions are, they should have to do with the violations [not the message on the nail].” If it comes out that it was meant as a coded message to the judge, Richman said there could be sanctions. “But if someone let her do that, they should know better,” she said. Lohan’s attorney did not return requests for comment at press time. Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan
