Jacob Lusk Says ‘American Idol’ Criticism From Jimmy Iovine ‘Hurts’

Lusk hopes to audition for Broadway and films, as well as make an album. By Gil Kaufman Jacob Lusk Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Jacob Lusk was pretty sure his “American Idol” journey was going to end Thursday night, and he was OK with that. But what kind of stung were the harsh comments made by mentor Jimmy Iovine in a taped package that ran before Jacob got his news, in which the Interscope Geffen A&M boss said Lusk appeared to lose his confidence and said the singer’s voice “closed down.” “I wouldn’t call it soul-destroying. It definitely hurts a lot to have someone who is supposed to be mentoring you and it feels like every time you turn around, [he’s] tearing you down,” Lusk said of Iovine’s cutting comments. “But what you have to remember is that you’re not doing it for him, you’re doing it for the people out there in America. They’re the people who are voting. It definitely hurts, it’s definitely hard to have someone beat you over the head with a baseball bat and then say, ‘OK, now go ahead and sing for your life.’ ” If there is any reason he was sent home, he said, it was because he wasn’t in his gospel/R&B element on Wednesday night and simply didn’t have a great performance. After his elimination, though, Lusk went out on a high note, giving one of his loosest, most engaging performances of the season with “A House Is Not a Home.” But in a call with reporters Friday (May 6), he talked about his performance after that performance, where he really took the audience to church and let loose. “I made a joke months ago [to ‘Idol’ bandleader Ray Chew]. I said, ‘Ray, if I ever got off this show, if I ever win, whatever happens, we’re going to church.’ ” But when he finished singing, he didn’t want to end on a sad, tearful note (though he did cry a bit), so he did what he always does: He rejoiced and celebrated making it to the #5 position surrounded by his family, producer Nigel Lythgoe and “Idol” stage manager Debbie Williams. When asked about Iovine saying the pressure seemed to be getting to him, Lusk disagreed with the assessment. “I wouldn’t say that the pressure was getting to me. I was getting a little tired and I was just really trying to do different things that I thought that he would like and that America just wanted to see different things,” he explained. “But at the end of the day, I definitely went out and I said, ‘I’m going to give them my all,’ and that’s what I did.” One of the signature moments Lusk was asked to clarify was when he seemed to call out the voting public before singing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” It appeared at the time that he was making some sort of political or personal statement with this warning: “If I end up in the bottom three, it won’t be because I sang the song bad. It won’t be because I sang the song wrong. It’ll be because everybody in America wasn’t ready to look at themselves in the mirror.” Lusk said Friday that he didn’t mean anything personal by it at all and lamented that it was all a big misunderstanding. “It had nothing to do with me and my vocal performance. I’m not the greatest singer in the world; at least I don’t feel that I am,” he said, explaining that he was referring to his song selection, which he’d changed from the more sensual Marvin Gaye tune “Let’s Get It On,” and how it was inspired by the recent Japanese earthquake. “For me, it was about us all taking an internal glance. … It had nothing to do with my vocal performance. It had nothing to do with people voting for me. It wasn’t about that. It was about me wanting people to look at ourselves and look at what we can do to change the world. … I was starting with me that night and saying that I was going to make a change to help change the world.” Now that the pressure is off and he can start thinking about the rest of his career, Lusk said he’s looking forward to auditioning for Broadway shows and films and working on a debut album that will eschew the bubblegum-pop sensibility of the day and get back to some classic soulful R&B like that of his inspirations, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and Patti LaBelle. “I’ve heard some things through the grapevine, and I think I’m gonna be fine,” Lusk said when asked if, like another recently eliminated singer, Stefano Langone , he’s gotten calls from major artists eager to work with him. “There’s a world out there who is desirous of what I have to offer, and it’s just about me really going out there and giving my heart and soul. Someone out there is gonna want it, and I’m excited just to give that.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Details about the hotly anticipated Cirque Du Soleil show based around the music of the late Michael Jackson were recently announced. Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour is expected to open at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in 2013. The $200 million show will feature unreleased music finished by Jackson before his death in 2009 as well as unreleased footage from the rehearsals of his aborted This Is It tour. The first ever official Michael Jackson Fan Fest will also be part of the show experience and will include re-creations of some of Jackson’s most memorable music video sets. The $59 million touring version of the show will hit countries across the globe. “It will be the biggest touring show ever because of all the dancers, musicians and acrobats,”   Jamie King, writer and director of Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour , tells the Las Vegas Sun . “The demand for the touring show is phenomenal — more than any other time in Cirque history,” Cirque du Soleil CEO Daniel Lamarre tells the Sun. “We have promoters across the world trying to book the show. We have to hire engineers to ensure the roof structures are strong enough to support our stages and equipment rigging. We see America and the rest of the world running for five years and conceivably even longer than that in the first go round.” A Michael Jackson “ultra-lounge” will also open at Mandalay Bay, as well as an interactive museum that recreates Jackson’s famed Neverland Ranch. “I cannot imagine this residency show ever closing. It will last forever,” Lamarre said. “Yes, we have a five-year plus five-year plus five-year deal as with all of our Vegas contracts, but in the tradition of Cirque, our shows last forever.” The Vegas residency is slated to open on December 3rd and will continue for 33 performances. The show will premiere in Cirque du Soleil’s home turf of Montreal. The Black Eyed Peas Define Innovation Before O Music Awards Debate

Most Innovative Music Video award will be handed out live Monday at 4 p.m. ET during online roundtable. By MTV News staff will.i.am Photo: MTV News On Monday, in a roundtable debate , the first-ever O Music Award will be handed out: Most Innovative Music Video. For weeks, fans have been voting for their favorite boundary-pushing, genre-expanding clip over at the O Music Awards site , and come Monday (at 4 p.m. ET on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com), they can watch as a winner is crowned — after some spirited debate from producer/ Global14.com creator Jermaine Dupri, acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable’s Brenna Ehrlich and MTV News’ James Montgomery. We’ll also be hearing from a host of acts who know a thing or two about innovation — including the Black Eyed Peas, who have melded hip-hop, pop and dance music into a sound that is uniquely theirs and have pushed the boundaries of music videos at the same time. So we decided to ask them to describe what innovation means to them. And, not surprisingly, they went all the way back to the early days of MTV — during the first reign of the King of Pop. “There would be no MTV if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson,” will.i.am said. “If you think about it, ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Thriller’ &#8212 all those songs &#8212 it was right around the time the video, it boomed. It was the first Internet, right? The idea of a visual, coupled with audio, and it was the first time you would see your favorite artist who was played all over the radio that told you to go see the concert. “So the video amplified concerts, it amplified the song on the radio, it created a business to where we were given MTV songs to play our video,” he continued. “It was a great business. ‘Check this out: I’m going to play the stuff you pay to make.’ … That is the best thing in the world.” And from Michael Jackson to today, the Peas see a clear line of inspiration — one that pushes the medium of the music video forward, through nothing more than sheer innovation alone. “It makes you really inspired to see people like Missy Elliott. She always had amazing videos. Ludacris, Busta Rhymes … Marilyn Manson is one of my favorite video stars; I’m always stuck like glue to the screen when he presents a video, because it’s just interesting, and it’s creative, and it’s really showing a peephole into his world,” Fergie said. “And I think that’s what it is with a video: You’re getting a peephole into a moment of an artist’s life, to present the visual with what you do sonically.” The O Music Awards debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by Fuze, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com at 4 p.m. ET on Monday. The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com . Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video! Related Videos What Makes An Innovative Music Video? Melania Trump Defends Donald Trump "Birther" Criticism; Loves Michelle Obama Fashion

Melania Trump wants to make a couple of things clear: Her husband, potential presidential candidate Donald Trump, isn’t the only one who wants to see President Barack Obama’s birth certificate . Michelle Obama has such great style! She won’t say if he’s decided to run yet, but that she “will support him no matter what he decides” and says he’s not alone in his “birther” suspicion. “Well I think it’s not only my husband that wants to see the birth certificate. I think it’s a lot of people who voted for him and who didn’t vote for President Obama.” Melania, a native of Slovenia, says people are just frustrated . “They ask where it is and why he doesn’t show it. Does he have it? Where is it? Why not show it? What’s the big deal? I’d show [mine]. What’s the problem?” Hawaii state officials swear that they have inspected Obama’s original document and a Certificate of Live Birth was released during the 2008 campaign. Trump has been called out by George Stephanopoulos , Bill O’Reilly and many others for beating what some think is a dead horse, but he persists. Just today, he called in to Fox News to say “I think I’ve made my decision” on running and he vowed to continue to talk about Obama’s citizenship. “So, the media really latched on to it. They really like that talk,” Melania said. “But he’s also for bringing jobs back and the economy and taking care of people that are working so hard and to bring this country back to where it once was.” Melania says the prospect of being First Lady and living in the White House is “something that’s exciting but we never know what will happen.” She lavished her possible predecessor with praise for her style, too. Michelle Obama, she says, would look great in her ‘Melania’ jewelry line: “Yes, she has fabulous style. Very nice style! She would look great in my jewelry,” she said. “Anybody, no matter who you are, the First Lady, your mom at home with a child, your a businesswoman. You can wear my jewelry.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Michael Jackson Autopsy Photos Admitted as Evidence in Dr. Conrad Murray Trial

The involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, will include haunting, starkly different depictions of MJ’s final days. In addition to rehearsal footage for his This Is It tour, prosecutors will show autopsy photos of the singer’s lifeless body on a coroner’s gurney, a judge ruled. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor cleared prosecutors to present the footage and autopsy photos in a lengthy hearing that set up evidentiary boundaries. One of the Michael Jackson autopsy photos shows Jackson’s naked body, but the judge explained “certain parts” will be “blocked out.” He didn’t explain which. The judge ruled that the photos are relevant under the evidence code and are “not gruesome, graphic or inflammatory.” However, he did rule out other material. Specifically, Pastor barred both sides from delving deep into personal details. He wants the focus on the medical care, not MJ’s personal life – or Murray’s. Jurors, Pastor said, will NOT hear about Murray being a player , his out-of-wedlock kids or penchant for strip clubs, all of which prosecutors hoped to discuss. Nor, he said, will they hear evidence that the defense had sought to introduce concerning Michael Jackson’s debt, pending lawsuits and erratic behavior.

Chris Brown Hits The Studio With M.I.A.

Singer tweets about the session, which also included producer Polow da Don. By James Montgomery Chris Brown Photo: Jason Kempin/ WireImage Chris Brown is branching out. His F.A.M.E. album sees him expanding his repertoire, and he’s already straddled the line between R&B and dance with “Beautiful People.” Now, he’s looking to push things even further. Though, to be honest, we’re not exactly sure in what direction. Brown recently logged studio time with the unlikely combination of M.I.A. and Polow da Don, a collaboration he broke on his Twitter account. “Was in the studio with the incredible M.I.A. and Polow,” he wrote. “Amazing artist[s]! Real talent!” Polow further confirmed the collabo on his Twitter account, and, from the sound of things, the music they made was revelatory. “In the lab wit the great Chris Brown and the incredible M.I.A.,” Polow wrote (in ALL CAPS). “Thank you dear lord!” Polow added , “I’ve waited on this moment my whole career … I feel this song in my soul!” For her part, M.I.A. remained silent about the music, but did mention that she was “shootin’ hoops” with Brown and the producer. It’s not known if the music they collaborated on is meant for a re-release of Brown’s F.A.M.E., the follow-up to M.I.A.’s 2010 album MAYA or something else entirely. Emails to reps for both artists were not responded to by press time. Brown is currently on tour in Australia, where, judging by his Twitter feed, he’s taking time to see a whole lot of movies and playing basketball with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League. Beastie Boys’ ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’: Five Things You Might Have Missed

Star-studded film is packed with nods to the Beasties’ past and present. By James Montgomery John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black in the “Fight For Your Right Revisited” video Photo: Capitol Records By now, you’ve probably watched — and subsequently re-watched — the Beastie Boys’ new “Fight For Your Right Revisited” film, which premiered at midnight Thursday morning (April 21) on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia. In theory, it’s a tongue-in-cheek retrospective on the Beasties’ early License To Ill days, picking up where their sublimely stoopid “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” video left off, following Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA — as played by Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride, respectively — on a drunken spree that culminates in an epic dance battle against their future selves (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, just in case you’re keeping score at home). But really, it works just as well as a rather-involved exercise in cameo spotting, as seemingly everyone in the universe pops up for a frame or three. Thankfully, the Beasties were nice enough to include a list of co-stars in the closing credits. Our favorites include Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci as the bewildered parents who interrogate the Beasties post-party, Will Arnett as a businessman who gives a shout-out to “Arrested Development” (“COME ON!”) and Orlando Bloom’s inexplicable three-second cameo as a window washer in a Def Jam windbreaker. But there seems to be a batch of uncredited cameos too — we’re pretty sure we saw Danny Masterson and Zach Galifianakis in there. In fact, outside of some of Michael Jackson’s biggest videos (“Liberian Girl” and “Remember the Time” come to mind), “Fight For Your Right Revisited” might very well be the most celeb-heavy video of all time. But, as we said, “Fight For Your Right” is also so much more. And while you were busy trying to keep track of all the cameos, you probably failed to notice some of the film’s subtler moments — nods to the Beasties’ past and present, the majority of which pass by with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it speed. Here are five we’ve noticed. And while we’ve watched the thing no less than a dozen times, we’re sure there are some we missed. Let us know in the comments below! Chateau Ted el Michel D

Michelle Bella: Dr. Conrad Murray "Sounded Tired" the Morning Michael Jackson Died

Dr. Conrad Murray “sounded tired and he was like I’m gonna get some sleep whatever” just a few hours before Michael Jackson died, a stripper says. Michelle Bella, one of three women Murray was juggling at the time, met MJ’s personal doc at the Spearmint Rhino gentleman’s club in Vegas in ’08. Bella told detectives that on June 25, 2009, Dr. Murray left a message on her phone at about 8:30 a.m. It sounds like the physician was just beat. Bella told cops Murray had mentioned Jackson to her before and said: “I mean his schedule was obviously, you know … I know that he was like up all hours because of his work so when – so when he called, you know, he sounded tired and he was like I’m gonna get some sleep or whatever.” A long-held theory among law enforcement is that Dr. Murray may have actually fallen asleep during the time the drug [Propofol] was administered to MJ and may have awakened to find Jackson already dead from heart failure. It may make his claim that Michael Jackson killed himself even more dubious. On an unrelated note, you gotta read how Conrad met Michelle: Bella told cops about the magic moment when she met Murray at Spearment Rhino: “He came in there with his scrubs and he was there with like a client of his.” Bella, then studying to be a chiropractic assistant, says, “We were just sharing some like, you know, medical knowledge and I know he was intrigued with me.” Murray must have been intensely impressed with her medical knowledge. She “sat with him for about roughly like an hour and a half and he paid me $1,000.” So heartwarming.
