Chris Brown Talks ‘Naysayers’ Before ‘Good Morning America’

Embattled pop star visited MTV News offices days before F.A.M.E. ‘s release — and ‘GMA’ outburst. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News Chris Brown glided into the MTV newsroom dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, his crown of kinky blond coils peeking out from underneath a navy-blue Billionaire Boys Club beanie. If not for the bodyguard, handlers and handful of pals trailing him, he might be indistinguishable from any other tatted 21-year-old fresh from sinking 3-pointers on the court. It was an unseasonably warm (74 degrees in March!) Friday in New York City, and with fewer than five days to go until his fourth album, F.A.M.E., dropped, Brown had gone into a full-court promotional press for the disc, tweeting regular updates to his #TeamBreezy faithful and spreading his pre-album jubilation. After spending the last year largely self-propelling mixtape singles “Deuces” and “No BS” to stunning chart success, he again had the full support of his label and was eager to talk about the disc. “A lot of the songs, people don’t realize the mixtape songs, they’re on [ F.A.M.E. ], but the mixtape songs were out almost a year before they actually went to radio. So it was a blessing for people to actually see those records a year later and kinda be like, ‘Oh, I love that record,’ ” he told MTV News. “So it was great.” In fact, he seemed game to chat with us about just about anything, even offering a “winning” perspective on the NSFW photo of him that shook the Net . And although the mood was celebratory, and Chris was at turns goofy and playful, his history has a way of looming over the proceedings. We never mentioned her by name, but ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the 2009 assault that sent Brown’s pop-star career spiraling remained a part of the interview subtext, if only because he seemed finally to have dulled the taint of that incident. “The ‘forgiving all my enemies’ is basically for the naysayers,” Brown told us, explaining the acronym of F.A.M.E. “The ones that maybe have looked past Chris Brown like, ‘Oh, whatever.’ And maybe this is the opportunity for them to maybe find a song off the album that inspires them … so I think this album in itself is not just about me, it’s about anybody who wants to be inspired by music or just be positive.” If Brown seemed to be singing a catchy new tune last Friday, by Tuesday morning, he was hitting all the wrong notes. During an appearance on “Good Morning America,” questions about the Rihanna assault reportedly drove Brown into an offstage, chair-tossing fit. And like that, experts and fans were weighing in on whether the Virginia crooner could still make a comeback . With the focus on what’s perceived to be Brown’s short fuse, the attention seems to be off his project, an eclectic collection that finds him further exploring electronic dance music territory, spitting with hip-hop titans and upstarts and even paying tribute to Michael Jackson with a song sampling his idol’s classic “Human Nature.” Chris had so many songs, he revealed to us, that he and the label agreed, “depending on the progress of all my singles,” that he would deliver another full-length disc in six months. “On my mixtapes, I was putting 18 and 19 songs, so just imagine how many songs I was saving for my album; I had at least 70 to 80 records. I was like, ‘How am I really gonna put this out?’ So then I was talking about a double disc … and then, you know, the label and everybody, they put their input in and they were like, ‘Nooo, that’s not gonna happen,’ ” he laughed. “I have so many records that I’m just waiting to put out. Just trying to look [to] the future and have it prepared.” The long-term fallout from the “GMA” episode remains unclear, but Brown is making one thing crystal: He wants the music front and center. Simon Cowell And L.A. Reid Discuss ‘X Factor’ Rumors

Cowell tells Ryan Seacrest that the TV talent competition’s final two judges may be revealed ‘in the next week.’ By Eric Ditzian Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX Simon Cowell called in to his former “American Idol” buddy Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday morning (March 23), and in between zinging each other — Simon, for instance, sarcastically suggesting “Idol” needs more mentions that this year’s talent is the best ever, because 16 times isn’t enough — the duo dished a bit of news about the Brit TV personality’s upcoming reality competition, “The X Factor.” While rumors continue to swirl about who will join Cowell and former Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid on the judging panel, Simon disclosed that he’s eyeing two hosts for the show, much like “Idol” during its first season. Unlike “Idol,” though, which featured Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman during its inaugural season, “X Factor” is targeting both a male and female host. “I think on this show it would be helpful to have two,” Cowell said. While Cowell had no announcements to make about the other judges that will be joining the panel, he did say news will be coming shortly. “Maybe in the next week we’re going to announce the final two,” he revealed. And what about those Nicki Minaj rumors? When Reid joined the conversation and Seacrest asked about a possible meeting between Reid and Minaj, the ex-label boss playfully stumbled though his words and said any such meeting would have nothing to do with “X Factor.” “We’ve got to find people who we like,” Cowell said about other judges. “You’ve got contracts, you’ve got dates, you change your mind, you meet new people. Literally just today, somebody else’s name has come into the frame. It happens.” Cowell, of course, didn’t mention who that new person was. But, he said, the new judge has got to be someone he trusts, much like Reid, who he’s known personally and professionally for a long time. “Simon and I have been friends for many, many years,” Reid explained. “When I met Simon, I thought he was a huge star, and if he could sing, I would have signed him … One day, Simon reached out to me [about joining ‘X Factor’] and, Simon, your exact words were, ‘Are your ears burning?’ ” Who would you like to see on the ‘X Factor’ judging panel? Tell us in the comments.

Elizabeth Taylor Passes Away at 79

Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79. Her cause of death is not immediately known, but Taylor had been treated at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for congestive heart failure last month. Although she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilized and it was hoped that she would be able to return home. Sadly, it was not to be as she passed away. The English-born, American-raised Elizabeth became a star at a very young age and has long been considered one of the greats of Hollywood’s golden age. A two-time Academy Award-winning actress, Elizabeth Taylor later in life became notorious for her seven marriages and sometimes eccentric behavior. She starred in the 1944 smash hit National Velvet at age 12, then won acclaim A Place In The Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and other works in the ’50s. Taylor won Oscars in the 1960s for roles in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Butterfield 8 , and was often the subject of celebrity gossip fascination. Her tempestuous marriages to Richard Burton, changing appearance, declining health and friendship with Michael Jackson all sparked speculation. May the Dame rest in peace. Janet Jackson Thrills Fans With Greatest Hits, Michael Tribute At Radio City

Singer covered songs ranging from classic ‘Pleasure Principle’ to 2008’s ‘Feedback’ at New York show. By Vaughn Schoonmaker Janet Jackson Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson’s outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set of her greatest hits at Radio City Music Hall. Monday night marked the last of three sold-out shows at the historic venue on her monumental Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour . Up-and-coming boy band Mindless Behavior opened the show with songs including “#1 Girl,” “Future” and their debut single “My Girl.” With their Usher-esque dance moves and shouts like “Where the ladies at?” the boys brought the tween girls out of hiding, judging by the shrill screams escaping various corner of the music hall. At 9:00 sharp, the lights went down and Janet’s fans were on the edge of their seats, watching music videos for “The Best Things in Life Are Free” and “Rhythm Nation” projected on big screens across the venue. A small shadow drifted toward center stage, and when the colorful lights came up, Jackson, wrapped in a shoulder-padded catsuit, complete with slick short hair, blasted into “The Pleasure Principle,” dancing as hard and intensely choreographed as she did when the song first came out in the 1980s. With barely a spare second between songs, Janet dazzled her way through her biggest hits, including “Miss You Much,” “All for You” and “Nasty,” and more recent hits like 2008’s “Feedback.” Videos displayed during Jackson’s costume changes included vintage clips from “Diff’rent Strokes,” a funny scene from “Poetic Justice” where Jackson slyly rejects the advances of Tupac Shakur’s character, and a rather heavy scene, as Jackson’s character in “Why Did I Get Married” destroys her husband’s house with a golf club, screaming hysterically. Considering the tough couple of years the Jackson family has faced, the dark moments in the video seemed necessary, and everyone was beside themselves with bittersweet joy when Michael Jackson’s face popped up on the big screen and she performed their hit single “Scream.” Janet emerged for her encore in a tight white one-piece disco suit, performing “Diamonds,” “Make Me” and “Together Again,” which appeared to be the biggest hit of the evening. Graciously bowing out, Jackson’s straight face transitioned into a smirk, suggesting that despite the hard times she has experienced recently, we can expect to see this singing and dancing pop legend shine far into the future. “Its amazing!” Janet fan Elena Mercantini gleamed afterward. “It’s like she’s still 20 years old!” “She’s hot, she’s amazing and she’s still got it after all these years” added Alison Klinger of Long Island. “Best concert I’ve ever been to!” Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Related Artists Janet Jackson Michael Jackson
