Living in the Land of Make Believe: Justin Beiber Fever, but is it the Fans Who Are Sick?

*Justin Beiber was just 14 years old when he was discovered. With his adorable smile, humble attitude and “mop” styled hair adored by young girl’s everywhere, he was to become “the next big thing.” Well, for the last two years, Justin has won the hearts of children, tweens, teens, young people and many more up the age ladder. While most other teenagers were gaming, toiling over which outfit to wear to school to keep their “cool” status and hoping that the girl or boy they like, likes them back, Justin has been singularly focused for the last two years on work. Hard work. It was just in 2009 that his debut single, “ One Time ” was released worldwide. The single hit its height in the top ten in Canada. The release of My World , followed in the fall of 2009, and was ultimately certified platinum in the United States. He’s been on fire ever since. It is clear from the teenage female fans that it is Beiber or bust. While he has been criticized for his popularity, he is highly regarded by many and considered a “teen idol.” I have to admit that his boyish face and seemingly humble disposition makes him hard not to like. The ultimate confession is that I have his music on my iPod (don’t judge me). Justin’s gift of himself and visibility to his fans is appearing to backfire. With each teenage girl believing that they could one day play the supporting role in Justin’s life, it was a blow to their hearts and egos when he was recently seen walking and kissing Selena Gomez, who is two years his senior. The fans took their pain to the ether and let loose posting death threats and other hurtful messages about Selena on Twitter and other blog sites. Unfortunately, Justin’s commitment to his fans circled back to bite him in the bum. I think if the fans of other teen idols like Michael Jackson and David Cassidy could have tweeted when they were rumored to be dating, we may have seen similar behavior. What would cause these teenagers to act in such a manner? Outside of raging hormones, that is. I believe that Justin’s visibility without a “girl X” by his side for these last two years led young fans to believe he would always be available to them. Then, he chooses someone they do not approve of. She may not be the “wholesome” match for the Beibs that would have for him. Most importantly Selena is not them. In addition and unfortunately, the internet is a great place for people to put their pain without any future guilt of watching the insult land on the eyes and hearts of the person it was directed towards. We watched this ugly scenario play out when Phoebe Prince in Massachusetts committed suicide in 2010 because of the relentless online bullying that was unleashed on her. We have to get these teens out of the Land of Make Believe. Monica Cost is communications strategist, brand manager and respected corporate and motivational speaker. Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video Is ‘Slimy,’ ‘Sexy,’ Fans Say

Little monsters in New York’s Times Square react to Gaga’s shocking birth scene, Michael Jackson homage and more. By Vaughn Schoonmaker Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Lady Gaga’s Born This Way video premiered on Monday (February 28), and, as many of her videos tend to do, it created some confusion among viewers. MTV News asked fans in New York City’s Times Square for their reactions. “It looks like she’s giving birth to something,” Angela Foreman suggested. “She looks really slimy!” Amanda Russ squealed. Another fan, Katie Doig, made the same observation as several of those we spoke to: “She’s so bizarre, but she’s great!” The video features Gaga taking on various identities, both “good” and “evil,” and is filled with dancing, kaleidoscopic imagery, protruding facial and shoulder horns and, of course, fashionably loud costumes and makeup. “She looks strange,” Foreman said about one scene. “Like a devil, very demonic.” “I don’t understand [but] it’s typical from Lady Gaga,” Guillaume Lachaud said about the unusual looks, and then added, “very beautiful, very sexy.” Gaga also is seen performing intricate moves (choreographed by Laurieann Gibson) to the “Born This Way” chorus, while dressed in a black bra and bikini; her body is especially exposed and toned in this clip. “She’s such a good dancer!” Doig exclaimed. As for the tuxedo-wearing skeleton sequence, it reminded some fans of another music-video pop icon. “She looks like Michael Jackson!” Lachaud smiled. “Very ‘Thriller,’ Foreman added. In spite of their baffled expressions, all agreed that the video held up against her previous work. “I think she looks great,” Andrew Janda complimented. “It’s a nice video.” “She’s so out there,” Doig laughed. “But it’s so good, like, only Lady Gaga can do it.” Sound off on the “Born This Way” video in the comments below! For Discussion: Shouldn’t The Grammy’s Be Reflective Of What’s Popular In Society? Steve Stoute Thinks So…

Yesterday, former music executive Steve Stoute let loose a scathing letter to the Grammy committee chastising their use of today’s most popular artists to sell the award show, without properly crediting them with statues for the categories in which they are nominated. Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic. As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West’s Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1984. What say you? Do you feel that the Grammy’s are representative of today modern pop culture? Go to HipHopWired to read more of Stoute’s letter
