Jonas Brothers Rooting For Michael Lynche on ‘American Idol’

‘He’s one of my favorites right now,’ Joe Jonas says of Big Mike. By Jocelyn Vena The Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News The Jonas Brothers were probably pretty relieved when the “American Idol” judges saved Michael Lynche a couple of weeks back. It seems the mop-topped trio are really rooting for the singer to win it all. “I don’t know all of their names, but what is the guy that sang that … Big Mike! I think he has an amazing voice,” Joe Jonas told MTV News. “He’s really talented. I want to say he’s one of my favorites right now.” Joe and his brothers say that even if Lynche doesn’t win, they are sure he has a very bright future ahead of him. “On ‘American Idol,’ they’re all so talented, and even if you don’t win, it seems like a majority of them end up becoming winners of their own because they are so talented,” he said of successful “Idol” alumni like Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry and Clay Aiken, who didn’t win their seasons. Joe knows a thing or two about season nine of “Idol,” since he has already appeared as a guest judge during the Dallas auditions and performed with Demi Lovato during a results show. But the guys aren’t sure whether they will stop by again this season. “It seems like it’s getting pretty close to the end,” Joe said. “But who knows? We found out I was performing [on ‘Idol’] like three days before.” Do you agree with the Jonas Brothers and think Michael Lynche will win “American Idol”? Tell us in the comments! Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze Dominate American Idol

And then there were two. Yes, we know there are actually seven finalists remaining on American Idol – but can anyone envision a scenario in which Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze does NOT take home the title? We certainly hope not, as this pair is clearly the cream of the season nine crop. Each proved why during last night’s edition of the show, based around inspirational singles, putting on performances that brought many in the audience to tears. We’ve ranked the top seven in order below. Just imagine a large space between number-two and all the others… Bowersox : Who needs a guitar?!? With a perfect rendition of “People Get Ready,” and with her father in the crowd, Crystal herself couldn’t stop from crying. But here’s encouraging news for the singer: she’s the one to beat. DeWyze : He took on “The Boxer,” a Paul Simon classic. It was a tender performance, one that lived up to the expectations of such a well-known, respected song. Awesome job. Casey James : Taken on its own, a solid take on “Don’t Stop.” But this singer sounds the same each week. Nothing stands out at this point, which might actually put Casey in danger of elimination this week. Siobhan Magnus : She took heat for her ballad of “When You Believe.” But who would you rank above her? Still has a great voice and great potential. Aaron Kelly : It’s difficult to get past the cheesy single he chose (“I Believe I Can Fly”), or even the shady persona of the dude who originally sang it (R. Kelly). But this Kelly connected with the audience in an impressive manner. Tim Urban : We’ve seen better recent performances from this cutie than his cover of “Better Days.” His time might finally be up. Michael Lynche : Another cheesy ballad, as Big Mike took a big chance with “Hero.” His voice just couldn’t carry such a tough song choice. Who was your favorite performer of the night?

Crystal Bowersox Almost Quit American Idol, Report States

Last week, the American Idol judges saved Michael Lynche from elimination. But a new report suggets this wasn’t the first time a contestant came close to leaving the show, only for an Idol mainstay to step in at the last minute. According to TMZ, Crystal Bowersox stormed out of the studio last month, sick of all the attention from the competition and asked Ryan Seacrest in the parking lot: “What’s the point?” Crystal, who said prior to this season that she had never watched American Idol , wanted to return to her family in Ohio. How did Seacrest convince Bowersox to stay? By stating that a victory would make her a millionaire and: “The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house.

Katie Stevens Did What Was ‘Best For Me’ On ‘American Idol’

‘They all know what they’re talking about, but ultimately, I need to do what I love,’ she says of the judges. By Katie Byrne Katie Stevens on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images After some iffy performances in the “American Idol” semifinals, many fans questioned Katie Stevens making the top 12 over other female contestants like Lilly Scott and Katelyn Epperly. Well, the 17-year-old was out to prove those critics wrong in the finals with her powerful performances of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and the Beatles’ “Let It Be.” But Simon Cowell lambasted Katie’s take on Elvis’ “Baby What You Want Me to Do” for being too loud and “annoying,” and she was sent packing, along with Andrew Garcia , on Wednesday night. We caught up with the high-schooler on Thursday (April 15) to find out what she thought of Kara and Simon’s back-and-forth about what kind of artist she was and much more. Q : Simon and Kara had a real tug-of-war going on, fighting over whether you should sing country or pop/R&B. What was it like being stuck in the middle of that? A : I think where I went at fault at the beginning of the competition, during top 24, was when I was trying to please the judges and I wasn’t pleasing myself and doing what I loved. I decided going into top 12 that I was just going to be myself. So everything that I did at that point was what I loved to do. I think that kind of showed, so the judges started giving me better comments. And Simon telling me he thought I was country — I mean, they all know what they’re talking about, but ultimately, I need to do what I love and do what I feel is best for me. And I kind of side more with Kara and the pop with R&B leanings. In an album, I would like to record things like Kelly Clarkson, where she has the soulful voice with kind of pop/R&B and a rock background. I hope to record that kind of album soon! Q : What was the most difficult aspect of being on “Idol”? A : Each contestant, we’d go out there, and we’d try to do our best each week, and it’s very hard knowing that you’re going to be judged afterward, because you don’t know what to expect. You don’t know if they’re going to give you good comments or bad comments, so you just try to manage your nerves as best you can. The singing part was probably easiest, but it was nerve-racking to go into the judging part of it. So definitely the judging was most difficult for me. Q : You mentioned that your dad had such a hard time with the results shows that he skipped them altogether. What was your parents’ reaction when you were eliminated this week? A : They have been behind me since I started to sing when I was little. Obviously, they saw that I was upset, but my mom even said to me yesterday … “You know what, Katie? If you started out and you were at the stadium, and they told you, ‘OK, Katie, we’re gonna let you be on the show, but you’re only gonna make it to the eighth spot,’ would you have done it?” And I said, “Absolutely.” So they basically told me how proud they were of me and how I should have no regrets about anything, and I don’t. I have no regrets, and I’m so proud of myself that I was able to have strength enough to go through this at my age. I’m very proud of everything I’ve accomplished. Q : After Michael Lynche was given a second chance , were you disappointed or relieved that the judges’ save wasn’t on the table for you this week? A : I love Big Mike. And I was so happy that he got saved and all of us contestants were able to spend another week with him. I mean, it was weird, because I had this feeling that it was gonna be me when I was standing next to him. And I’m so proud of him and all the other contestants. And I was privileged to be able to spend time with them and work with all of them. I was definitely happy to be able to sing at the end. Obviously, it’s a little emotional, but I tried as best I could, and that wasn’t the last time that America’s gonna see me. Just gotta keep that in mind. Q : What was the best piece of advice Adam Lambert gave you as a mentor ? A : He told me to always stick to what I love and what I believe in. It was great to have him as a mentor, because he’s been through the “Idol” process. So he was able to give us feedback on what he did and how he was able to evolve throughout all the pressures and everything. And it really helped us try to home in on that and do the best that we can. Were you sad to see Katie go? Are you excited to hear her post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! Andrew Garcia Says ‘American Idol’ Judges Were ‘Really Hard’ This Year

‘Idol’ castoff also insists he’s not boring: ‘If they hung out with me, they’ll love me.’ By Katie Byrne Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Andrew Garcia just couldn’t get past his Hollywood Week performance of … do we even need to remind you which song by a former “American Idol” judge he covered? His uninspired performance of Elvis’ “Hound Dog” was the last straw, and he was sent packing , along with Katie Stevens, during Wednesday’s results show. We caught up with the acoustic crooner on Thursday (April 15) to talk about his “Straight Up” albatross, his bromance with Lee Dewyze and much more. Q : You had a lot of hype going into the semifinals after your take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” Do you think your early fans were disappointed with the direction you went once the live shows started? A : I felt super excited coming into the top 24, and I don’t feel like I let my fans down at all. My fans are just so amazing, and they get me, and that’s all that matters. I know I didn’t let them down, and they know I didn’t let them down. Q : After weeks of bad reviews, were you surprised that the judges loved your take on Chris Brown’s “Forever” during R&B week ? A : I kind of knew it was gonna be a good night, just because I’m a guy who does current music and puts my acoustic twist on it. And I saw that song, and I was like, “Man, I gotta do something with that song. It’s current and my feel too.” I’m a kind of R&B/pop kind of guy. I put my twist on it, and I felt it 100 percent. I was just like, “You know what? I know the fans and supporters are gonna love it.” And I went out there, confident, and it showed. And [the judges] loved it. Q : Simon often got on your case for being boring, and mentor Adam Lambert even said you needed to liven things up. Why do you think your personality didn’t translate into your performances? A : Well, onstage, I was focused more on just performing. They’re talking about personality; they don’t really hang out with me, so they can’t really talk about someone’s personality if they’re not trying to hang out with me. If they hung out with me, they’ll love me. Guarantee. Q : After Michael Lynche was given a second chance , were you disappointed or relieved that the judges’ save wasn’t on the table for you this week? A : At that point, I was just happy with where I was at and how far I’d gotten. And the save, they couldn’t have did a better save. Michael Lynche, that guy is a warrior, and I love that guy. Q : Do you think this year’s judging panel was harder on the contestants than last year’s? A : I felt like it was harder, just ’cause they were being really hard this year. I don’t know why, but they’re being really, really, really hard on the judging. Q : Ryan Seacrest was especially wacky this week, even slow dancing in the aisle during Tim Urban’s performance. What were you thinking when you saw his behavior? A : I was like, “Ryan has lost his mind.” But I love the guy. He works a lot, so he has the right to get a little coffee in him now and then. Q : What brought you and Lee together as friends? A : We find ourselves doing the same thing at the same time, and it’s just really weird. Like, “What the heck?” We look at each other, and we’re like, “Dude, we’re meant to be!” Q : Will you be rooting for Lee at future shows? A : I will for sure go to the shows and cheer him on. That’s my brother for life. Were you sad to see Andrew go? Are you excited to hear his post-“Idol” music? Let us know in the comments below! M.I.A.’s Lady Gaga Comments Stir Mixed Reactions From Fans

‘She sings about riding disco sticks and gets called a genius for it,’ one fan wrote in agreement with M.I.A. By Jocelyn Vena M.I.A. Photo: Michael Loccisano/ FilmMagic M.I.A. has opened quite a can of worms for herself. After taking a few shots at Lady Gaga in an NME interview, calling Gaga “a good mimic” and “not progressive,” fans of both ladies are speaking out for and against the rapper’s comments. “M.I.A. is not even on the same level as GaGa. She only got her 15 seconds of fame because ‘Pineapple Express’ put her song into the trailer. Did anyone give a damn about her before? Nope,” Gabriel wrote. “I respect Lady GaGa a lot more because she worked her way towards where she is. She’s innovative and she’s a talented entertainer and song writer. Have I seen any of those qualities in M.I.A.? Not at all. She’s just trying to get back into the spotlight, but I doubt anybody will care.” Theboogieman631 noted that regardless of their artistic integrities, comparing the two artists is like comparing apples and oranges. “I don’t see how anyone can compare the [two]. Their music doesn’t sound remotely the same,” he wrote. “They’re both on different ends of the spectrum.” Victor defended M.I.A.’s comments, noting that the rapper “is just being honest people and she’s not jealous. Gaga is a mimic nothing more nothing less, she sings about riding disco sticks and gets called a genius for it,” Victor continued. “Her videos rival the advertisements during the Superbowl … Everything she does is a rip off of either Grace Jones, Madonna, Rosin Murphy, Bj

‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson Explains Michael Lynche Save

‘It was the right thing to do,’ Jackson says of judges’ decision to reverse his elimination. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Randy Jackson and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News This week, the “American Idol” judges decided to use their one-time-only save on Michael Lynche , who came close to going home this week. Some “Idol” fans and experts were surprised that they used the save so early in the season, but Randy Jackson says Big Mike earned it. “It was the right thing to do,” Jackson told MTV News at the “America’s Best Dance Crew” finale on Thursday night. “He sang his brains out [Wednesday] night. It was the right thing to do. I’m happy we did it.” Jackson knows that the decision had to be taken seriously, since it means they won’t be able to reverse America’s votes if another judges’ favorite gets eliminated. “We get one save in the season. He was so good [Wednesday] night, and this is a singing competition,” he explained. “And he was the best singer in the whole show [Wednesday] night. “We started our discussions and were saying, ‘My god, well, he’s singing amazing tonight,’ even though he’s had up and down weeks,” he continued, describing their deliberation process. And Jackson thinks that Mike didn’t get the lowest number of votes because he lacks fans. “I think he would have been safe, and I think they forgot to vote for him thinking, ‘Ah, he’s going to be there [next week].’ ” Do you think the judges used their save on the right guy? David Archuleta and Rihanna Perform on American Idol

While the American Idol community is buzzing over the judges’ decision to save Michael Lynche from elimination (do you think it was the right call?), we’d like to focus on the two acts that graced the stage last night. First, what can even be said about David Archuleta at this point? Young, cute crooners such as Alex Lambert and Aaron Kelly have won over many fans this season, but neither compares to this former finalist. He showed why again last night, serenading the audience with a rendition of “Imagine.” David Imagines After that, the episode took a 180 degrees turn and showcased a song from Rihanna, looking even more hardcore than usual. Michael Lynche’s ‘American Idol’ Save And Other Reality-TV Comebacks

From Chris March to Speidi, we look at some spectacular returns from the dead. By Eric Ditzian Michael Lynche Photo: FOX Michael Lynche was an “American Idol” goner for exactly 216 seconds: the time between Ryan Seacrest’s announcement that he was heading home and Simon Cowell’s declaration that the judges had used their precious save to keep Big Mike crooning another day. “We only have one save in the competition,” Simon said. “This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” And just like that, Lynche was once again an “Idol” hopeful instead of an “Idol” has-been. It was an emotional comeback for Big Mike, the soulful teddy bear who was stuck in Hollywood Week while his wife went into labor and delivered their baby girl. And it’s a comeback that has us looking back at other reality show revivals, when contestants we thought were dunzo ended up re-joining the competition. Chris March, “Project Runway” : Season four’s gregarious costume designer got Heidi Klum’s heave-ho in episode four, after he couldn’t figure out how to make fashion magic out of shoulder pads and baggy sweaters. But one illness of a fellow contestant later, and March was back to sew another day. And sew he did. March ended up making it to the final four and getting to design an entire collection before being booted off pre-Fashion Week. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, “I’m a Celebrity …Get Me Out of Here!” : Speidi actually pulled off a reality show quit-and-comeback twofer in the Costa Rican jungle. First the duo decided they were “too rich and famous” to be slumming it with the likes of Stephen Baldwin. They took off voluntarily … only to return shortly thereafter, blaming the devil for their actions. But that comeback was short-lived, as Heidi was hospitalized and the couple fled back to the concrete jungle of L.A. Matt Giraud, “American Idol” : “Idol” introduced the judges’ save in season eight last year, and Giraud was the first and — until Big Mike — the only contestant ever to receive that honor. Yet Giraud’s fate should be a cautionary take for Lynche. On Disco Night the following week, Giraud busted out a slow-burning take on “My Funny Valentine” and was promptly voted off once again. This time there was nothing the judges could do. Beware, all ye who attempt to overrule the will of the American voting public. Jimmy D and Shauna, “Millionaire Matchmaker” : Wait, were you under the impression that “Matchmaker” isn’t actually a competition show? Oh, gentle reader! Both of these looking-for-love-in-all-the-wrong-places contestants have popped up twice on the show. After insulting his Scientologist date during his first appearance, Jimmy D staged a comeback, taking a new gal to Vegas. She ended up getting a bit too tipsy and fleeing to her hotel room while he waited downstairs for their romantic dinner. To paraphrase Jimmy D, Don’t nobody treat Jimmy D that way! Shauna, meanwhile, is a self-declared cougar who first landed a date with a rich 20-something. Sparks didn’t fly with the youngster, so Shauna opted for an older gentleman for her comeback. Of course, she never actually got to the date, as she ran away screaming after catching a glimpse of the old fogey, losing a high heel in the process. Veronica Portillo, Basically Every “Real World/Road Rules Challenge” : Veronica is the undisputed queen of reality-show comebacks. You think we’re kidding? How ’bout “Challenge 2000,” “Battle of the Seasons,” “Battle of the Sexes,” “The Gauntlet,” “The Inferno,” “Battle of the Sexes 2,” “The Inferno II” and “The Ruins.” We’re exhausted just thinking about all that wackadoodle combat and late-night boozing. Kudos to Veronica for her epic resilience … and for actually winning three times! Who is your favorite reality-TV comeback kid? Reminisce in the comments below.
