American Idol: Always Say Die [Recaps]

In an episode that the Fox television network would call “riveting,” America’s favorite gypsy curse gave us a wanly shocking surprise that really opens this game wide open! More

Judging the Judges’ Save on American Idol: Did Justice Prevail?

Hooray! Not so much? This week, American Idol ‘s voters grew a pair and almost eliminated a dude . But before that pig could fly, the judges whipped out a pocket veto and fired it square at the showstopping vest of Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, who sang a decent “Eleanor Rigby” this week and still scored the lowest number of votes. The new father Lynche, whose wife enjoyed a very famous cervix during Hollywood Week, lives to meet mentor Adam Lambert . Are we happy for Big Mike’s triumph?

Michael Lynche: Saved by the Judges!

Phew. That was close. Due to a collective, nationwide brain fart, Michael Lynche found himself in the bottom three last night on American Idol . Once Aaron Kelly was deemed safe, Lynche then found himself in the bottom two alongside Andrew Garcia – and then the bottom one! Granted, Big Mike’s rendition of “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday was overblown and far from his best. But, unlike viewers around the country, the judges were willing to give Lynche another shot: they unanimously voted to save him from elimination. Think they made the right call? The excitement, and flamboyance, on American Idol will be ratcheted up next week: Adam Lambert will mentor the contestants. Regarding anyone’s fears, Adam Tweeted this week: “Don’t worry America: I will be beyond family friendly. Relax and enjoy. For Your Entertainment.”

‘American Idol’ Judges Save Michael Lynche

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week’s bottom three. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox On Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday’s (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges’ save, of course! Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche’s turn to go — a bit of a shock after the “Idol” judges praised his reworking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Ribgy” — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier. As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet. “The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position you’re in right now,” Cowell said. “We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche’s wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed “Big Mike” was mobbed by his fellow “Idol” contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife. Lynche’s save, of course, means that two “Idol” hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then. Wednesday’s bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact “Idol” producers didn’t reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Der

Didi Benami Voted Off American Idol

While Big Mike Lynche and Lee DeWyze showed off their soulful side and established themselves as contenders on Tuesday’s American Idol along with Crystal Bowersox, plenty of other performers left the stage in mediocrity … or worse. Before this season, the judges touted the quality of the female aspirants. Well, we’re three weeks into the finals and three women have been kicked off so far. The latest victim: Didi Benami. Her inconsistent performances, including Tuesday’s “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted,” were her undoing as American Idol voters issued her a pink slip. As for Tim Urban, that guy keeps on sliding unscathed despite a third straight visit to the bottom three. Katie Stevens also made a return trip to the bottom three. ADIOS, DIDI: America make the right call? Next week, the group performs songs from The Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney, which should provide great variety and be a real treat. Which of the remaining nine do you see going all the way to the end, and who do you think is a candidate to be sent packing next Wednesday? Here’s how we see the remaining finalists in three tiers of three … The Contenders Crystal Bowersox Michael Lynche Lee DeWyze Hanging Tough Casey James Siobhan Magnus Andrew Garcia Bottom Three Aaron Kelly Katie Stevens Tim Urban TOP 9 : One of them will be the next American Idol … but who?

American Idol Performances of the Week: Michael Lynche and Lee DeWyze

Fans will ultimately have the final say, but to THG, Michael Lynche and Lee DeWyze stood out most on American Idol Tuesday. The judges were certainly impressed. In fact, Simon Cowell said that it was his cover of India.Arie’s “Ready for Love” that finally made him a credible artist in his eyes. For the surly Brit, that’s saying a lot. Slowing things down with an acoustic guitar, Big Mike sounded great and wowed the panel and audience alike. We’re pretty sure the voters will turn out for this, too. Here’s Michael Lynche singing “Ready For Love” … Ready For Love Lee DeWyze also made a statement last night, perhaps propelling himself to contender status with a soulful, raspy, powerhouse rendition of “Treat Her Like a Lady.” “This was the night your life may have changed forever,” Simon said. Again, high praise from the man. Follow the jump to see Lee do his version of the classic … Treat Her Like a Lady

Casey Reinhardt to Star in New Reality Show

Casey Reinhardt, the sister of Paris Hilton’s beau Doug Reinhardt and best known as the blonde girl on Laguna Beach not named Kristin Cavallari or Lauren Conrad , is getting her own reality show on E!, with Doug serving as producer. Got all that? According to reports, Doug is envisioning a Kardashian-style show for Casey Reinhardt and her girlfriends, in which he and Paris Hilton will also appear periodically. Why would E! possibly go for this? Insiders say the network hopes for wedding bells between Paris and Doug, which could deliver a big ratings bonanza similar to Khloe Kardashian’s tearful nuptials. Would you watch a Casey Reinhardt reality show? Over 3.2 million viewers tuned in last November to see Khloe marry Lamar Odom. E! hopes that Paris Hilton can pull in that many, or at least in the same ballpark. An inside source told the N.Y. Post , “Doug and Paris will also appear on the show, and executives hope that an engagement will happen in the next six months.” Hey, she’s already dropping hints . Reinhardt’s agent, Greg Weiss, confirmed, “Doug is producing the show, which will star his sister and her friends. But he and Paris will also make appearances.” As for Casey, the show’s supposed star? She’s a former beauty queen who’s a student at Pepperdine University and is working on her own cosmetics line. Cute.

Paige Miles Voted Off American Idol

With a couple of notable exceptions , Tuesday’s American Idol performances left plenty to be desired, and plenty of people wondering who’d end up in the bottom three. Last week, Paige Miles was narrowly spared from elimination. Wednesday, though, the 24-year-old Floridian’s run on American Idol came to an appropriate conclusion. Paige’s promising voice and great personality weren’t enough to overcome her erratic song selection and a quite lackluster rendition of Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds.” To the surprise of no one, Tim Urban joined Paige in the bottom three again, along with Katie Stevens, whose “Big Girls Don’t Cry” nearly resulted in tears of her own. Next week, it’s R&B/Soul time, with Usher serving as mentor and guest performer. Miley Cyrus rocked the house last night, and we’ll have video of that for you soon. PAIGE TURNED: A good run, Paige, but Miles apart from the top tier. Which of the remaining 10 do you see going all the way to the end, and who do you think is a prime candidate to be sent packing next week? Here’s how we see the remaining finalists, grouped into tiers … The Contenders Crystal Bowersox Siobhan Magnus Michael Lynche Hanging Around Casey James Didi Benami Lee DeWyze Andrew Garcia Bottom Three Calling Aaron Kelly Katie Stevens Tim Urban TOP 10 : Who will be the next American Idol?
