Kara DioGuardi Predicts Male American Idol Winner

American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi predicted a male winner and discussed other elements of the show, such as Simon’s close talking, with Jay Leno last night. Asked about the current season, she admitted a soft spot for Michael Lynche, a.k.a. Big Mike, who moved her to tears with last week’s performance: “I love him,” she said. Kara blamed her Italian heritage for getting so emotional, but couldn’t hide her affinity for Lynche, as well as her theory (or so it appeared) that a male will win this season. She also suggested that Simon Cowell might be suffering from separation anxiety from Mezghan Hussainy lately, as he’s been leaning in close to her a lot on the show. When Leno brought up her “ bikini moment ” (complete with picture), the phrasing of Kara’s response seemed to betray the influence of sitting near Simon every week: “It showed I could kinda take the piss out of myself,” she said. Alright then. Kara on Leno Who do you think will win American Idol this season? In other Kara news, her father, Joe, is running as a Republican for U.S. Senate in New York State!

Michael Lynche Profile: ‘Idol’ Finalist ‘Plans On Being Around For A Long Time’

‘American Idol’ Top 12 cheat sheet looks at Lynche’s strengths and weaknesses. By Jim Cantiello Michael Lynche at the “American Idol” top 12 party Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its Top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each candidate’s journey thus far. He also got the “Idol” hopefuls to weigh in when he caught up with them at Thursday night’s Top 12 Party in Hollywood. Michael Lynche Michael “Big Mike” Lynche is like a cross between season three’s goofball Matt Rogers and the Velvet Teddy Bear, Ruben Studdard. On steroids. Not literally, since Big Mike is a personal trainer, not a juice-taker. As far as we know. Best Performance : Big Mike’s a rare example of an “Idol” contestant who shines brighter without an instrument. A confident take on James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” was entertaining, but his go-for-broke version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” which moved Kara DioGuardi to tears , was a game changer. Weakest Performance : Week one’s Jason Mraz impression didn’t win him any fans. He sang “I’m Yours” but he wasn’t ours. Not by a mile. Tragic Backstory : Big Mike’s wife went into labor with their first child during Hollywood Week. Extended phone call montages and conversations about her birth canal followed. We’re not sure who will need more therapy: his daughter, whose birth her dad missed because he was auditioning for a televised karaoke competition, or his wife, whose birth was documented in eye-opening detail by “Idol” cameras. Why He Will Win : Big Mike has a fun nickname, a newborn baby and a charming personality. Ellen DeGeneres deemed him the one to beat this week. If he continues to pick smart songs, he could muscle his way into the finale. Why He Will Lose : He’s likable, but in a TV host kind of way, not an “I wanna run out and buy that guy’s album” kind of way. What He Should Sing : Mike’s personal goal should be to make every single judge cry at least once this season. We know Simon’s mourning the loss of his dad. If Lynche turned John Lennon’s “Mother” into a soul tour de force, Cowell would lose it. On Being Called “The One To Beat” By Ellen : “I think it’s way too early for anybody to be ‘the one to beat,’ ” Lynche said. “It’s a long season. I plan on being around for a long time, so you can’t take any of that stuff to heart, negative or positive.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. American Idol Finalists: Party Time!

While fans argue about the final 12 on American Idol ( Paige Miles over Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott? Really?!? ), this season’s recently-named finalists attended a party in their honor last night. Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre and past contestants were also on hand, as were Cory Monteith and members of the Glee cast . But the event was all about Crystal Bowersox , Michael Lynche and company. That pair of singers, two of the only contenders in an otherwise mediocre field, celebrated with an airplane ride at the shindig: Click on the photos below for more looks at the finalists posing on the red carpet: [Photos: Splash News]

American Idol Sets Final 12, Sends Four Packing

American Idol revealed its 12 season nine finalists last night, eliminating four contestants in the process. Two of those eliminations were easy to see coming: We’d have gone with Paige Miles and Tim Urban instead, but it’s hard to argue with viewers sending Katelyn Epperly (the weakest of this season’s singer/songwriters) and Todrick Hall (more of a dancer than a singer) home. But Lilly Scott and Alex Lambert? Wow. The lessons future contestants can take from these semifinalists would be: don’t only sing songs from previous decades; and get over your stage fright. We wish all booted contestants the best, but it’s now time to focus on those remaining. We’re not down to the top 12, and we’ve listed them below, from most likely to win to least likely… Crystal Bowersox Siobhan Magnus Casey James Michael Lynche Didi Benami Lee DeWyze Andrew Garcia Paige Miles Aaron Kelly Katie Stevens Lacey Brown Tim Urban There’s a big drop-off after the top four, as two women and two men really stand out. Do you agree? Who would you have sent home and who do you consider the favorite?

Andrew Young Fails to Hand Over Rielle Hunter Sex Tape; Jailed For Contempt in John Edwards Case

Andrew Young somehow had (or still has) a John Edwards-Rielle Hunter sex tape, which a North Carolina judge ordered the former Edwards loyalist to hand over. Having failed to do so, Young is being held in contempt and jailed. The Raleigh News & Observer reports Chatham County Superior Court Judge Abraham Penn Jones has ordered Young and his wife, Cheri, jailed up to 75 days . Jones believes Andrew Young lied about how many copies of the sordid John and Rielle sex tape exist, as well as how many people have viewed that nastiness. “There were things told to the court, under oath, in affidavits, in testimony that turned out to be inaccurate,” the judge said, laying the smack down on Young. Young, whose best-seller The Politician outlines his role in helping orchestrate and cover up Edwards’ affair and love child with Rielle Hunter , said he found the John Edwards sex tape while cleaning out an house she lived in during the affair? He said another copy of the sex tape was handed over to the FBI for its ongoing investigation into John Edwards alleged theft of PAC funds to pay off Rielle. A grand jury indictment of Edwards is said to be imminent by some sources. Hunter, claiming theft of personal property, has also gone after Young in court. Some suspect that the legal assault being waged by Hunter may be masterminded by a certain shrewd former trial lawyer behind the scenes – John Edwards. John and Rielle teaming up? Wouldn’t that be ironic. John Edwards, his weird mistress and their lovely daughter.

American Idol Performance of the Week: Michael Lynche

On American Idol , he’s known as “Big Mike.” This moniker, bestowed upon semifinalist Michael Lynche by Ryan Seacrest, refers to the former’s massive stature. But it’s also now appropriate for the impression made Lynche last night. It was BIG! Belting out Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” Lynch literally brought Kara DioGuardi to tears. She had to be comforted by Simon Cowell, while the crowd couldn’t stop applauding. Watch the performance below, and be warned Casey James : you’re no longer the male favorite. This Woman’s World

Michael Lynche’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ Brings Kara To Tears On ‘American Idol’

Simon Cowell dubbed it ‘the best performance we’ve had of all these live shows so far.’ By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: Fox Praise from the “American Idol” judges is one thing, but tears? That’s when you know you’ve really nailed it. And big Michael Lynche definitely brought down the house Wednesday night (March 10) when he closed the top eight men’s live performances with a seductive, between-the-sheets cover of one of British singer Kate Bush’s most iconic tunes, “This Woman’s Work,” that made judge Kara DioGuardi openly weep. Wearing a black suit coat with a red pocket square, black tie, jeans and a white dress shirt, the brawny Lynche opened with a fragile, operatic falsetto vocalization over piano that sent chills. The choice was a bold one, as Bush is a beloved figure and the song is a tricky-to-sing modern classic has been used to dramatic effect in a number of TV shows over the years (“Felicity,” “Alias,” “Party of Five”). It was also famously covered by soul singer Maxwell on his 1997 MTV Unplugged album and later on his 2001 Now studio album, a version that clearly informed Lynche’s take on the song. Bush wrote it specifically for a sequence in the 1987 John Hughes film “She’s Having a Baby,” during which Kevin Bacon is pacing outside the delivery room where his wife is having their first child and he’s fretting about the changes they’re about to face and the rush of emotions he’s feeling. Making expert use of his breathy falsetto, Lynche, a new father whose firstborn arrived while he was toiling during Hollywood Week, wrenched every bit of emotion from the lyrics about life-changing events. “Ooh, it’s hard on the man/ Now his part is over/ Now starts the craft of the father,” he crooned in a clean, clear voice. On a night when the judges said some of the singers didn’t connect with their chosen lyrics, Lynche astutely picked a song that mirrored the tumultuous adult changes he’s going through in his personal life, helping to give the performance an added gravity and believability. As he leaned into the second verse, Lynche came out from behind the mic stand and began laying a gospel edge on the song, shaking his head and shoulders, bobbing up and down and waving his hands as if giving a Sunday sermon. With a long, sustained note on the line “Oh, darling, make it go,” Lynche provided the night’s much-needed “wow” moment and easily punched his ticket to the top 12. How good was it? DioGuardi was literally brought to tears. “I’ve never cried after hearing something like that,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. “It’s amazing. You were amazing. And it’s so relevant for you, and I can feel it. It’s your life right now. It’s your respect for your wife, what you’ve gone through … and as a woman who doesn’t have a child, I can relate to it so much and it brought me to tears.” All Randy Jackson could say was, “Really?” telling Mike he was going to put Maxwell on notice that he should watch his back. “For everybody that doesn’t know, it was dope, it was unbelievable,” he said. “I wanna call Maxwell and tell him, ‘Yo, big Mike is knockin’ on the door, dog, be ready! But the last note? … I was like, what?” Ellen DeGeneres said it was so good it felt like the show had just begun and Lynche was suddenly the one to beat. “This was so needed tonight,” Simon Cowell said of the breath of fresh air on an otherwise-boring show. “You come out with an incredibly difficult song to sing and you 100 percent nailed it. Not just the best performance of the night, it’s the best performance we’ve had of all these live shows so far.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Aaron Kelly and Michael Lynche Don’t Suck on American Idol

Due to a medical emergency involving Crystal Bowersox, the men were forced to switch nights with the ladies this week on American Idol . We guess we could chalk up the number of poor performances to this scheduling switch… if so many guys had not also been lackluster last Wednesday evening. While a handful of semifinalists stood out, we wouldn’t complain if any of the bottom half of contestants listed below got voted out. Here’s how we’d rank this week’s male contenders: Aaron Kelly : Granted, “My Girl” is a fun, easy song to sing for anyone with a good voice. But Aaron showed impressive range and confidence for a 16-year old. Michael Lynche : Might have to be known for more than his physique and personality know. Fantastic song choice with a James Brown classic. Casey James : The judges may say it’s a singing competition, but his electric guitar will help James go far. So will his looks. Lee DeWyze :We hate to agree with Kara, but it’s true: we could imagine Lee on the radio right this very instant. Andrew Garcia : That rendition of “Straight Up” is coming back to hurt him. No performance since has compared. Alex Lambert : We weren’t nearly as impressed as the judges. He may not have vomited before performing this week, but is that the standard we’re going by now? Todrick Hall : The best of the worst. We’ll give him points again for at least trying something different. John Park : Ellen said she likes his look. The guy wears a t-shirt and… is Asian? We’re not sure what Ellen means. Jermaine Sellers : Says he’ll stick around because “I know God.” Loved Simon’s response: Then there’s no need for anyone to call in for you, right? Tim Urban : Seems like a very nice guy. But simply isn’t a very good singer. Take your pick, vote our any of the final four and we’ll be happy. But we’d send Sellers and Urban packing. How about you? Below, we’ve posted performance photos of all 10 semifinalists. Click on each to enlarge and choose your favorite…
