Due to Crystal Bowersox’s illness, the guys will perform Tuesday and the girls will perform Wednesday. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Michael Becker/ FOX On Tuesday (March 2), Fox announced that due to Crystal Bowersox’s medical condition that would prevent her from performing on Tuesday’s show, the 10 remaining male contestants would perform the night before the 10 remaining female contestants. The female singers are expected to perform on Wednesday instead. The 10 remaining male performers include Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Todrick Hall, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Alex Lambert, Michael Lynche, John Park, Jermaine Sellers and Tim Urban. The 10 remaining girls include Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lacey Brown, Michelle Delamor, Katelyn Epperly, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Lilly Scott, Katie Stevens and Haeley Vaughn. On Thursday’s show Danny Gokey, who was a season-eight finalist, is scheduled to perform his new single “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” and fans will find out the next two contestants to be sent home. “I think a girl’s gonna take it,” judge Randy Jackson told MTV News . “I think the talent’s bigger this season with the girls. I think they came in better, more prepared and they probably were at home saying, ‘God, every season a boy wins. What happened to the girls?’ [Last season] Alison Iraheta was a great singer. She’s got a great voice. She’s got a big career ahead of her.” Despite the fact that the boys have triumphed the past two seasons, Jackson said the ladies’ post-“Idol” career choices have been a bit more solid. “Could it be that the girls are making better choices than the boys, or could it be the girls know who they are and have listened to us and [then] gone off the show and made better choices?” he asked. “Life is about choices.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. We’re glad we’re not an American Idol contestant this season. Partly because we have an atrocious voice and would be laughed out of the competition. But also because the judges seem more scatter-brained and confusing than ever: be original, they tell contestants, but not so original that you butcher a song. Be true to who you are, they add, but also mix it up and stand out. For example: If you didn’t like Tyler Grady’s 70s schtick, panel, why did you select him for the semifinals? With that complaint out of the way, we’ve ranked last night’s set of live performances from best to worst: Casey James : Yes, we’re suckers for the Bryan Adams single “Heaven.” But aside from his voice, we admired James for the classy way he handled the show’s focus on Kara’s fawning over him. Andrew Garcia : Stop bringing up his great rendition of “Straight Up” from an earlier round, judges, and focus on each performance. We loved his arrangement on “Sugar We’re Going Down.” Todrick Hall : We’re probably alone with this pick, but the guy took a major risk by re-working a Kelly Clarkson classic and he gets props for that. Lee DeWyze : We had no idea he had this in him. Solid work on “Chasing Cars” and the official male dark horse. John Park : Did he try to do much with a difficult song? Yes, but he wants to marry Shania Twain and the show could use someone with a sense of humor. Alex Lambert : The judges actually did call this one perfectly. He has potential, but just needs to get more comfortable on stage. Aaron Kelly : If he had waited a year or two to try out, could have been a front-runner. Decent performance of “Here Comes Goodbye.” Joe Munoz : We’re just glad he didn’t choose the popular Jason Mraz song everyone sings. Actually not bad, but a lack of stage presence and star power. Jermaine Sellers : Over-singing alert! The guy just tries too hard on stage and it doesn’t look natural. Michael Lynche : We’re huge fans of “Big Mike” as a person. Nice, sweet guy. But he simply lacks the vocal talent. Tyler Grady : We never liked his 1970s look. Way too much of a gimmick. Tim Urban : Actually worse than Lacey Brown the night before. New AOL poll finds that fans are digging Ellen DeGeneres but miss Paula Abdul. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX Crystal Bowersox and Andrew Garcia are the early frontrunners on this season of “American Idol” according to a new AOL Television poll, which also revealed that, so far, fans are loving new judge Ellen DeGeneres, but still missing their old pal Paula Abdul. Tuesday night’s (February 23) two-hour performance show by the top 12 girls will feature dreadlocked mom Bowersox, 24, while the boys’ sing-off on Wednesday will spotlight fellow young parent, 24-year-old Garcia. In the poll, Garcia led all vote-getters with 26.2 percent, barely edging out Bowersox, who was second in the weekend tally at 25.2 percent. The poll ran on the site from February 18-22 and got 57,682 votes. Another parent, new dad Michael Lynche, came in a solid third at 15.5 percent, but the personal trainer whose wife gave birth while he was toiling in Hollywood week was also voted the most overhyped contestant, with 36.8 percent. He was followed in that category by Bowersox (12.3 percent), Didi Benami (9.7 percent), Katie Stevens (12.5 percent) and Garcia (7.2 percent). Others making the early favorite list include pinup cowboy Casey James (15 percent), Stevens (12.5 percent) and Lilly Scott (5.6 percent). Clearly the more intense focus on contestants’ compelling backstories has resonated with fans, who overwhelmingly (78.3 percent) said the show’s mini biographies give singers an unfair advantage in voting. But some of those with tearjerking stories didn’t make it past Hollywood. Poll respondents ranked the contestants they thought should have made the top 24, putting three-time washout Angela Martin at the top (44 percent), followed by teary crooner Thaddeus Johnson (21.7 percent), Shelby Dressel (15.1 percent), Tori Kelly (8.7 percent) and Jermaine Purifoy (5.7 percent). Ashley Rodriguez was voted this season’s most likely dark horse at 28.5 percent, followed by quirky Siobhan Magnus (21 percent), last-minute finalist Tim Urban (20.1 percent), Lacey Brown (15.8 percent) and John Park (14.5 percent). And while 58 percent said that so far they love DeGeneres, 46.3 percent said they miss former judge Paula Abdul “a ton” and that the show is not the same without her. The bad news for Paula? Almost as many (41.3 percent) said don’t miss her at all, and 12.4 percent said they never noticed she left. Who’s your season nine favorite so far? Do you agree with this poll’s results? Talk about it in the comments below! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Following a two-hour episode of American Idol that dragged on for longer than most installments of The Bachelor , the judges finally selected seven of the season’s final 24 contestants. The rest will be chosen tonight and then all these semifinalists will perform live from Hollywood, starting next week. Can you feel the excitement? The singers that received good news last night were: Michael Lynche : Ryan loves to refer to him as “Big Mike.” We saw snippets of his “I’m Yours” auditions and the nice, laid back guy just became a father for the first time. Didi Benami : Probably our favorite so far. This 23-year old is full of emotion, as she auditioned for the show in the wake of her best friend’s death. Sang “Angel” during one of the Hollywood rounds. Casey James : Took his shirt of during his original try out, but is better remembered for almost losing the use of his hands in a motorcycle accident. He’s 28 years old and a country artist. Aaron Kelly : Just 16 years old, was adopted by his aunt and uncle. He won the “American Idol Experience” at DisneyWorld a few years ago. Lee Dewyze : Released an album in 2009, not given a lot of time so far on the show. At 23, Simon Cowell questions his confidence. Todrick Hall : Appeared in The Color Purple on Broadway. The 24-year old has performed on cruise ships and in theme parks. Katelyn Epperly : Sings lead vocals in a folk rock band. The 19-year old hails from Iowa. Which of these contestants do you think has the most potential to be named the next American Idol ? Our money would be on Benami or Hall.

Katelyn Epperly, Lee Dewyze and others also make the cut. By Larry Carroll and Jim Cantiello Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox Another episode has gone past, and the country’s vision of its next “American Idol” is becoming a bit clearer. On tonight’s show, seven contestants officially made the cut into the Top 24, and from talented future superstars to earnest underdogs to overachieving rookies, the eyes of the world are now upon them. Here’s our breakdown of the names announced tonight: Michael Lynche – A big man with a big heart, Michael is a new father with new hopes for superstardom thanks to his “Idol” success. Blessed with great guitar-playing skills to go along with his voice, Michael’s story isn’t without scandal — reports indicate that ,link type=”content” id=”1630479″> his father has spoken with the press , and in doing so committed a major “Idol” no-no. Will it result in his disqualification? Katelyn Epperly – Boasting a beautiful smile and bouncy blond hair, Katelyn has been performing in public since she was knee-high to a grasshopper. The product of a broken home, this Des Moines student brought the house down with Duffy’s “Syrup & Honey” — and is now looking at a future that seems mighty sweet. Didi Benami – Inspired by her deceased friend Rebecca, Didi also plays guitar and is somewhat reminiscent of Season 7 contestant Brooke White in both skill-set and emotional nakedness. If she continues to make the cut, look forward to lots of tears — and perhaps a sponsorship deal with Kleenex. Casey James – The chicks dig him. He’s a bad boy with a murky past — ’nuff said. Aaron Kelly – Our own Jim Cantiello calls him “Countryleta” and, sure enough, this 16-year-old high school student has the potential to be a country version of David Archuleta. The judges love a great story, and it’s hard to beat his: Adopted by his aunt after his parents could no longer care for him, Aaron won the “American Idol Experience” at Disney World and got a boost to the executive-producer round. Sounds like a true Cinderella story, from the very studio that gave us the big-screen tale. Lee Dewyze – Considered a dark horse, the guitar-playing balladeer with the sensitive eyes and poor man’s Mike Nesmith wool cap has solid stage presence and is intent to do “good things” in music. Is he a sleeping giant? We’ll find out soon enough. Todrick Hall – A pal of Fantasia’s, he worked with her on “The Color Purple” and is now turning hundreds of cast-away wannabes the color green — with envy. “I’m a dancer, that’s what I’ve been trained to do,” Hall has explained. “I’ve never had a voice lesson in my entire life, so for me to be competing with these people is just a crazy overwhelming experience.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Michael Lynche, Didi Benami, More Make ‘American Idol’ Top 24

Some early favorites are sent packing during the first group round. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: FOX As usual, chaos, quarreling and drama ruled on group night on “American Idol.” Wednesday’s show found the 95 remaining singers shoehorning themselves into unnatural combinations that mostly upped the already tension-filled pressure-cooker atmosphere as battle lines were drawn over choreography, harmony, personality and anything else worth arguing about. Tears were shed, fingers were pointed and lyrics were blown time and again as the groups spent the traditional sleepless night working on their steps and trying to find their groove as viewers’ heartstrings were pulled by big Michael Lynche monitoring his wife’s labor on his cell phone and listening as his daughter was born across the continent in New York. First up was the group named Faith, singing Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” in near enough harmony to allow Charity Vance, Ashley Rodriguez and Michelle Delamor to advance even with Vance’s thin, squeaky high notes and spartan choreography. Lynche was up next with Team Awesome, singing the Temptations’ “Get Ready.” Country hunk Tim Urban did his part, as did Lynche, but the group’s other two members, third-timer Seth Rollins, a father of two, and Michael Castro, younger brother of Jason Castro , didn’t make the cut. For Castro it was strike two in the Hollywood round. Two groups chose to sing Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and, fortunately for Team Neapolitan, they went first. While Liz Rooney’s platinum-blonde hair with pink highlights grabbed plenty of attention, her bum notes appeared to melt the group’s chances. But Thaddeus Johnson and Pussycat Dolls-alike Jessica Cunningham redeemed the quartet with strong vocals. “I actually thought in its own way that was very good,” Simon Cowell said, praising their effort to the chagrin of rival group Destiny’s Wild, who were miffed that Neapolitan seemingly stole their idea to do the song a cappella. Wild had nothing to worry about, as their strong vocals, acrobatic choreography and infectious energy won the day. Between Todrick Hall’s back-flipping gymnastics and soulful vocals, Theri and Jareb Liewer’s impassioned singing and Siobhan Magnus’ scratchy soul bark, Wild made it — just barely. “It really was weird,” new judge Ellen DeGeneres said, comparing their outfits to Cirque du Soleil, but ultimately putting them through. The Mighty Rangers struggled to get enough practice time, and while Tori Kelly and Maddie Penrose did their part on Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” the house fell down when Mark Labriola and Kimberly Kerbow both forgot the words, prompting DeGeneres to ask them to stop. Kelly and Penrose got good news, while a weepy Labriola, wiggy Kerbow and Danny Jones were sent home, with Labriola tearfully begging for one more chance in his last year of eligibility. Just moments before Phoenix took the stage, one member bolted because she couldn’t stand the pressure, leaving Ben Honeycutt, Jeff Goldford, Moorea Masa and Jermaine Sellers to solider on singing Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.” It wasn’t great, with Kara comparing it to “Survivor” and Cowell saying their excuses weren’t cutting it. “The struggle was you had 12 hours to learn the song — that is not hardship,” he said. Gritty crooner Goldford and smooth singer Sellers got passes, while the other two were sent packing. Note to future “Idol” wannabes: don’t pick Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape,” because if you forget the lyrics and toss bum notes, you will fail. Stefani was not kind to Orlando auditioner Matt Lawrence, who spent four years in jail for robbing a bank when he was 15 or Amanda Shectman, who won the panel over at her audition with some drama-queen antics. Both bit it hard on “Escape,” forgetting the words and mumbling so unintelligibly that Cowell didn’t even let them finish. “There isn’t going to be any you stepping forward … it was so horrific,” he said, summarily dismissing the quartet. Middle C brought it with Janell Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory and pretty boy Casey James nailing their version of Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” while early front-runner Andrew Garcia lifted his group Three Men and a Baby higher, anchoring a solid performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One” that also featured soulful turns from 17-year-old Katie Stevens and recent high school grad J. B. Ahfua. The final group was The Dreamers, a five-piece that seemed to spend most of their time arguing. Rock mom Mary Powers started things off by throwing a nervous laugh into her intro on Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” which drew a harsh stare from Cowell. With lame choreography and thin vocals, things weren’t much better for Texas bartender Hope Johnson, tone-deaf waitress Margo May or nervous-looking Texas teen Alex Lambert. “It’s like the dream died somewhere on that stage,” DioGuardi quipped. Despite the drama, Powers, Johnson and Lambert made it through, joining the 68 other singers who made it to the next round. Hollywood continues next week in the wind-up to the choosing of the top 24.
