And They’re (Almost) Off: The Preliminary 2011-12 Oscar Index

Ready or not, the Oscar Equinox is upon us: The Venice Film Festival is underway, the Telluride Film Festival launches this weekend, and the Toronto International Film Festival commences a week from tomorrow. Amid that crop of movies will be the bulk of this year’s awards-season contenders, which will compete against an elite class already having opened in theaters and another fistful yet to come this winter. Same game, new players. And Movieline’s redoubtable Oscar Index has the preliminary breakdown of who to watch.

Michael Shannon Lands Key Role in Next Superman Movie

Look out, Henry Cavill. An Oscar nominee will soon be coming your way. Michael Shannon has been cast as General Zod, the main villain, in Superman: Man of Steel . The Boardwalk Empire star is also known for his role in Revolutionary Road. Said director Zack Snyder of the casting: “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.” The next installment of this iconic franchise will be released in 2012 and also feature Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent, respectively. Kneel Before Michael Shannon! Boardwalk Empire Baddie Is General Zod In Zack Snyder’s Superman

Are you there, Zod? It’s me, Michael Shannon. I may have my doubts about Zack Snyder as a director for the upcoming Man of Steel Superman reboot, but his casting has been right on the money of late. After casting Henry Cavil as the titular hero and Amy Adams as spunky girl reporter Lois Lane , Warner Bros. announced today that Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon will be stepping into the black satin tap pants of General Zod.

Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain Nab First Sundance Deal

So you might have heard Sundance gets underway this week, but Sony Pictures Classics isn’t wasting any time on the acquisitions front: The distributor has picked up the Michael Shannon/Jessica Chastain psychological thriller Take Shelter , which premieres in competition Jan. 24. CAA — which represents virtually the entire principal cast as well as writer-director Jeff Nichols — sealed the deal with two days to spare before the fest’s opening night. And thus it falls off Movieline’s annual bidding-war forecast, also coming soon. Congrats to all.

‘I’m What Time and Circumstance Made Me’: Boardwalk Empire Recapped

If the penultimate episode of Boardwalk Empire did anything, it gave the series an epitaph for its first season. As Jimmy told The Commodore — pat on back: I, like many others, had already called that he was Jimmy’s pop-pop — “I’m what time and circumstance made me.” So, too, is every other major character populating this east coast Gomorrah. It’s enough to make Randolph and Mortimer Duke proud.

An Eclectic Cast Plays Russian Roulette in the 13 Trailer

Watching the trailer for this American remake of the nifty minimalist French thriller 13 Tzameti is a bit frustrating. It looks remarkably similar to the original film, and the fact that Géla Babluani directed both versions only adds to my suspicion that this remake is unnecessary and probably kind of dull. But then there’s the cast. And the fact that watching Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Sam Riley and Jason Statham play Russian Roulette under Michael Shannon’s supervision may actually be enough to get me to watch the same movie again.

On DVD: Lost on Planet Werner with My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

Like a missile out of the declared Hollywood underground, the Werner Herzog-directed, David Lynch-produced, Michael Shannon-starring My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done lands in your yard and dares you to get near, lest it finally detonate. Fresh to DVD this week, it’s not a movie you can bring expectations to, unless you’re expecting a cranial injury and a case of vertigo.

You Decide: Did Gerard Butler Grow a Mullet for Machine Gun Preacher?

God bless Gerard Butler’s agent, who is nothing if not relentless. Despite a seeming lack of fans and/or likeability, the burly Scottish actor has what seems like an unending stream of generically titled films playing in a permanent loop. Quick: Tell me the difference between The Bounty Hunter , Law Abiding Citizen , Gamer and The Ugly Truth without resorting to IMD b. While you attempt to suss those out, remember that Butler also has Machine Gun Preacher in the works, too. That film was supposed to be a more serious-minded affair: Based on the true story of Sam Childers, a former drug dealing biker who found God and rescued a bunch of Sudanese children. As Marty McFly would say: Heavy. But then why does the first look of Butler-as-Childers on-set look so… ridiculous. Click ahead to answer the age old question: Is that a mullet or not?
