‘Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment,’ Poison frontman says backstage at the finale. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The only thing Lee DeWyze wanted to do in life is play music. Now that he’s the new American Idol , the former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that. He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour “Idol” finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — offered some sage career advice. Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox. “Here’s the thing: Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you’ll have a long career,” said Michaels, who was at the “Idol” finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart . “That’s really the truth. That’s what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], ‘I gotta do it my way,’ ” he said. “I also would tell him … make sure you love what you do. And don’t ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul.” What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments. ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’: Behind The Song

Rock ballad Bret Michaels performed on ‘American Idol’ was heavy-metal band Poison’s first–and only–#1 hit. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX Bret Michaels surprised millions of viewers, turning up on the season-nine finale of “American Idol” to perform “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The guest spot was Michaels’ first major musical appearance since suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage last month, followed by a series of health-related setbacks. So what’s the story behind that song? To some, it’s a tune made familiar by star Miley Cyrus , who recently covered it. But for Michaels (and Poison fans), the song’s history runs much deeper. In an episode to devoted to him on VH1’s “Behind the Music” , Michaels revealed that he wrote “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” as a way to cope in the aftermath of his breakup from then-girlfriend Tracy Lewis. According to the Poison frontman, the song’s titular rose represented his blossoming music career, while the thorn was a metaphor for how success had cost him the relationship with Lewis. Though forged from heartbreak, “Every Rose” ultimately rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for three weeks, from December 1988 to January 1989. It was Poison’s first, and only, #1 hit. “Every Rose” became not only a commercial success, but also found a place within popular culture. The track played a memorable role in 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” with the flick’s rock-obsessed idiots reciting lyrics from the song in order to gain entry to Heaven. And Michaels collaborated with Cyrus for her remake of the Poison tune, which landed on her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed.” Of course, the song surfaced again during Wednesday night’s “American Idol.” Singing the track opposite third-place finisher Casey James, Michaels provided his supporters with a powerful message: Just as “every rose has its thorn, and every night has its dawn,” Michaels’ troubles are coupled — and exceeded — by his triumphs. Bret Michaels To Appear On ‘American Idol’ Tonight: Report

TMZ cites ‘spies’ as saying rocker will appear on ‘Idol’ finale. By MTV News staff Bret Michaels Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Bret Michaels will appear on the “American Idol” finale tonight, TMZ reported on Wednesday evening (May 26). The site cited its ” ‘Idol’ spies” as saying the singer will make a “cameo” during the show, although at press time it was unclear whether he might perform. Last month, Michaels was hospitalized for a serious brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week due to a “warning stroke.” Despite his serious medical condition, Michaels has bounced back with vigor, making many television appearances in recent weeks — including a victory on the “Celebrity Apprentice” — and insisting that he’ll resume his tour with an appearance in Mississippi on Friday night. “I am not at 100 percent yet, but I have every intention of trying to continue the tour starting Friday in Biloxi,” he wrote in a message posted on his official website earlier this week. “I hope to see your rockin rollin, smiling faces on the road — that is the best medicine I can think of right now. You rock my world.” Michaels is set to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by another 39 shows from New Jersey to Washington. The tour is not expected to finish up until early October in San Antonio. But hitting the road so soon after his multiple health problems seems to carry its fair share of dangers. Michaels admitted that his doctor warned him about the risks of even appearing on the “Apprentice” finale, saying, “Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here. I came to win and I’m glad to be on the show.” Following the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month, Michaels landed back in the hospital last week with a so-called warning stroke. Doctors also discovered the singer has a hole in his heart and have scheduled him for surgery to correct the issue in the fall. Yet Michaels clearly remains upbeat and committed to returning to his strenuous touring life. “With all of my heart, soul and the remaining organs I have left (lol) I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and awesomeness,” Michaels wrote in his message. “All the good vibes and well wishes gave me the strength to go back to New York and win ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ ” Related Photos Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos Related Artists Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels To Undergo Heart Surgery This Fall

‘It’s gonna be a smooth operation,’ the ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ winner says of his hopes for the procedure. Speaking with “Access Hollywood,” Michaels said the surgery would occur once he’s completed taking current medicine to recover from the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month. “What they’ll do is, they’ll go in and they’ll do the heart operation in the fall,” Michaels revealed. “They have to let everything clear out, and then they’ll go in and do the operation in my heart, and then I’m gonna be great. I don’t have any other options except to think that it’s gonna be great, it’s gonna be a smooth operation, and I’m gonna feel awesome.” Despite protests from his doctors, Michaels appeared on Sunday night’s live season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice,” where he was crowned the winner. “Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here,” Michaels said of his decision to appear at the finale. “I came to win, and I’m glad to be on the show.” Winning “Celebrity Apprentice” is far from Michaels’ greatest recent victory, as the Poison frontman beat the odds by surviving the unanticipated hemorrhage in April. On the “Today” show, Michaels revealed his current medical status . “This is the truth: I’m not back 100 percent yet, but I’m one of those guys that I have to have a goal, and I’m very driven, and I say this truthfully, I love life,” he said. Bret Michaels Expresses Shock, Thrill Over Celebrity Apprentice Title

What a difference a month makes… Bret Michaels went from his death bed in late April to the top of the board room last night, becoming the latest Celebrity Apprentice champion when Donald Trump “hired” the ailing rocker. “I gotta tell you, I am so thrilled, I am beyond thrilled to have won,” he told E! News at the show’s after-party. [Photo: Splash News] Due to his recent stroke , of course, Michaels had to jet across the country in order to attend the finale, a decision that was NOT doctor-approved. “We went back into the hospital again, they said, ‘Listen, we don’t advise that you fly, but if you wanna do it, here’s what you need to do.’ And I’m here, and I didn’t want to miss this for the world. I’m ready to rock,” he said. As usual Donald Trump also chimed in with overflowing praise – but, for once, it wasn’t for himself. “Bret has been fantastic right from the beginning,” Trump said. “He almost died a month ago, less than a month ago. He was a little bit shaky tonight, but in the end he came through like he always does.” That’s what countless groupies have said.
