Bret Michaels Tells Oprah ‘I’m Just Very Thankful To Be Here’

‘The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family,’ he says in his first TV interview since brain hemorrhage. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Wednesday Photo: Harpo In his first television interview since suffering a serious subarachnoid hemorrhage , Bret Michaels appeared live via satellite on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday (May 19) to discuss his medical emergency and subsequent recovery. “My life didn’t flash before my eyes,” Michaels told Oprah about his experience. “It wasn’t like, all of a sudden, a rerun of my life. What happened was, I got very sad. I went into completely just asking God, ‘You have to let me through this.’ ” Michaels said that while he prayed to God, he didn’t necessarily hear back. “I was doing a lot of asking at that point,” he explained with a laugh. “I know I’ve done a lot of rotten things, but I’m asking for a break here. If you could cut me a break just this time, I promise I’ll be better in the future.” In a video segment, Dr. Joseph Zabramski said that Michaels’ condition was very serious when he first arrived to the hospital. “I tried explaining to him what we would be doing, and he was really unable to stay awake,” he said. “It’s really quite a miracle that he’s done so well.” Zabramski said it’s still unclear exactly what caused the hemorrhage, but added: “The chance for re-bleeding is really no higher than anyone else in his age group. I think this is more common than people realize.” During his struggle, Michaels said his thoughts were affixed on “what matters most,” including his kids, family, best friends and loved ones. His career was not on his mind. “The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family, my kids, and I thank God I’m still around to talk about it,” he said. A photo revealed that Michaels was still wearing his trademark bandanna throughout his ordeal. “It’s like Superman without the cape,” he laughed when asked why he continued to wear it. “If I’m going to go out, I want to go out rockin’!” Michaels’ family and friends appeared in pre-recorded video messages to discuss their fears and wish the Poison rock star well. “I just want to say hurry up and get your bum back to L.A., because your sugar mama needs you,” said Sharon Osbourne, Michaels’ co-star on “The Celebrity Apprentice.” “I want to give you a great big hug, and I want to see those gorgeous blue eyes of yours.” “The scariest part was thinking that my dad could die tonight,” Michaels’ daughter Raine recalled. “All these memories went flashing through my head of him. My first time on stage with him, my first time singing in the mic with him, my first time playing basketball. To think my dad wouldn’t be growing up with me or walking me down the aisle for my wedding was really heartbreaking.” Michaels teared up after both segments: “I’ll tell you, I said I wasn’t going to cry. That got me. I got the lump in my throat.” Michaels revealed that he’s asked his doctors to increase his rehab sessions to twice a day. Currently, he’s having trouble moving in his lower extremities, his neck is very stiff, and he continues to have headaches, though those are getting better with each passing day. “I don’t know what the reason is just yet,” he told Oprah of why he got a second chance at life. “Whatever or whomever blessed me, whatever guardian angel I had when I think of all the crazy, crazy things I’ve done in my life, I’m just very thankful to be here.” What did you think of Bret’s interview with Oprah? Bret Michaels Recalls "Severely Wrong" Feeling to Oprah

Less than one month ago, Bret Michaels was lying in a hospital room, thinking he was going to die from a brain hemorrhage. What was the rocker thinking as he lay on the gurney? I’m gonna keep wearing my signature bandana, he tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview that airs next week, because: “If I’m going out, I want to go out rockin.'” The moment the subarachnoid hemorrhage took place, Michaels said he knew something “was severely wrong.” “It just exploded instantly – ran from my temple down to the back of my skull,” added the reality star. Incredibly, Michaels plans to return to the stage in Biloxi on May 28. He also may appear on the May 23 live season finale of Celebrity Apprentice , where he’s still alive for the $250,000 prize for his charity. Most importantly of all, of course, the singer is simply alive. Period.

Bret Michaels Talks Losing Virginity On ‘When I Was 17’

‘It involved a motorcycle, a blanket and an 8-track,’ the Poison frontman admits on Saturday’s episode. By Eric Ditzian Photo: MTV News It’s been a harrowing but, ultimately, hopeful month for Bret Michaels , who suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in late April, only to recover enough that he was able to tape an interview with Oprah Winfrey , airing Wednesday (May 19). Michaels is also set to appear on Sunday’s finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” It’s a dramatic turn of events for the Poison frontman, but it seems the 47-year-old star has always had a way of putting a theatrical spin on whatever he pursues. “I lost my virginity around 17. It involved a motorcycle, a blanket — I’m going to admit it — it was an 8-track pop-tape player at the Mechanicsburg Fish Hatchery,” Michaels reveals during the new episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. We take it all this added up to one heck of a romantic gesture back in Pennsylvania in the early ’80s. Michaels, though, considered himself lucky to even be in a position to lose his virginity, given his face was covered in pimples at the time. “I worked at Bob’s Big Boy,” he explained. “I was the ultimate busboy, and eventually I got to the ultimate job, which was deep-fry cook. I’ve already got an acne problem, and now the grease flying up on my face isn’t really helping the situation.” Zits or not, Michaels had a way with the ladies. He also had a feeling that he wouldn’t be working at a fast-food joint for long. “I had a couple buddies there,” Michaels said. “We loved to raise hell. We’d go out, hang out by the dumpster on our break, because that was the cool thing to do. You make it work. You had to tell yourself, ‘It’s going to get better than this.’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kevin Jonas, Bret Michaels and Katharine McPhee — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Bret Michaels To Appear On Live ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ Finale

Poison singer is competing against actress Holly Robinson Peete on Sunday’s show. By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels on “Celebrity Apprentice” Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images A few days before Bret Michaels is scheduled to play his first concert since a brain hemorrhage landed him in the intensive care unit, the Poison singer will appear on next Sunday’s finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” Michaels made the cut on Sunday night’s (May 16) edition of the show — taped several months ago — which paved the way for him to make his comeback on this week’s live finale, where he will go head-to-head with actress Holly Robinson Peete. “I came in here as a complete underdog,” Michaels said after getting the news on the show. “You know what everyone’s mistake was? They so underestimated me!” Michaels made the cut after Sharon Osbourne, chef Curtis Stone and model/wrestler Maria Kanellis were eliminated. Michaels has been competing on “Celebrity Apprentice” in support of his chosen charity, the American Diabetes Association. The singer, who was diagnosed as a child with Type 1 diabetes, was first sidelined on April 12, when he was rushed to a hospital for an emergency appendectomy. Ten days later, he suffered a brain hemorrhage that kept him in the intensive care unit for two weeks. After making rapid progress, though, Michaels is in the midst of intensive physical rehab and announced last week that he will make his live return at the Hard Rock Live in Biloxi, Mississippi, on May 28. He is also reportedly set to begin a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd on June 10 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Before any of that, though, Michaels will pay a visit to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday to discuss his recent health travails.
