Brian Williams Announces Leave of Absence from NBC Nightly News

So much for the NBC Nightly News… with Brian Williams . In the wake of a controversy over how he misled viewers regarding an incident in the Iraq War, the anchor announced on Saturday that he’s taking a leave of absence from his post. “In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions,” Williams said via statement. He added: “As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. “Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.” The scandal surrounding Williams began during a January 30 broadcast,, when he erroneously claimed his helicopter was hit by a grenade in March 2003 as he covered the Iraq War. Williams apologized on air last Wednesday. Since then, the network has opened an internal investigation into his coverage of the war and other major events, including Hurricane Katrina. Many have called for Williams to be fired as a result of this lie, despite how attractive his daughter is and despite his ability to rap classic singles . “We have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired,” NBC News President Deborah Turness said in a memo on Friday. 17 Lip Dubs We Loves 1. Poll Shows Most Americans Business Have A Right To Deny Gays Via The Grio reports: While finding that Americans narrowly favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry, a new Associated Press-GfK poll also shows most believe wedding-related businesses should be allowed to deny service to same-sex couples for religious reasons. Roughly half the country also thinks local officials and judges with religious objections ought to be exempt from any requirement that they issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, according to the poll. That view of the same-sex marriage issue echoes that of the Mormon church. Last week, the church called on state legislatures to pass new laws that protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination but also to protect the rights of those who assert their religious beliefs. David Kenney, a self-employed Catholic from Novi, Michigan, said he’s fine with same-sex marriage being legal. He’s among the 57 percent of Americans who said wedding-related businesses — such as florists — should be allowed to refuse service if they have an objection rooted in their religion. “Why make an issue out of one florist when there are probably thousands of florists?” asked Kenney, 59. “The gay community wants people to understand their position, but at the same time, they don’t want to understand other people’s religious convictions. It’s a two-way street.” Kenney isn’t alone. About a quarter of those who favor legal same-sex marriage also favor religious exemptions for those who issue marriage licenses, the poll finds, and a third say wedding-related businesses should be allowed to refuse service. Geri Rice, who lives near San Francisco and works in law firm management, strongly favors gay marriage. She’s torn about whether a public official with religious objections should be exempt from issuing a license but says she believes that business owners should be allowed to tell somebody no thanks. “I don’t like it,” Rice said, “but I think they have the right.” Whether a business can refuse service to someone is a matter of federal, state and local law. National gay-rights groups called the idea of trying to carve out religious exemptions in anti-discrimination statues, such as those proposed by leaders of the Mormon church, deeply flawed. James Esseks, who directs the LGBT project of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the First Amendment’s protection of religious freedom “does not give any of us the right to harm others, and that’s what it sounds like the proposal from the Mormon church would do.” The poll found that 44 percent of Americans favor and 39 percent oppose legal same-sex marriage in their own states, while 15 percent expressed no opinion. But the country is evenly divided, 48 percent to 48 percent, on which way the Supreme Court should rule when it decides the issue for the entire nation this spring. Discuss…

Another brotha throwing away his future Via ESPN The Michigan Wolverines dismissed senior Frank Clark on Monday after police arrested the starting defensive end on domestic violence charges in Ohio this weekend. Clark, a native of Cleveland, was arrested in the early morning hours Sunday. He appeared on video conference in the Sandusky Municipal Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges and bail was set at $3,000. It is unknown if he posted. “This is a tragic situation,” coach Brady Hoke said in a written statement. “Our student-athletes will be held accountable when their actions fail to meet the standard we have at Michigan. There is a legal process that will occur and we respect that process.” Hoke called the report “unacceptable” in a news conference and said he doesn’t want his program to be associated with those types of allegations. Hoke said he has not yet had a chance to speak to Clark, but looks forward to doing so in the future. He said he first heard about Clark’s arrest Sunday morning and spent the next 24 hours collecting as much information as he could before making the decision to dismiss Clark. Hoke said he speaks to the team regularly about domestic abuse. “I’ve told our guys since Day 1 that it won’t be tolerated,” he said. “It won’t be tolerated in this program. I have a daughter who is 29. I have a wife. I have two sisters. That’s always been probably one of the first things I talk about with our teams at least a couple times a year.” Here’s how it all went down according to the cops: In the police report, Clark’s girlfriend said he punched her in the face after an altercation in the Maui Sands hotel in Sandusky, Ohio. The woman’s brother, who was also in the room, said he saw Clark pick her up by the neck and slam her to the ground. Clark was outside the room when police arrived, according to the report. He told officers that he didn’t touch the woman, saying she was having “crazy fits” and may be pregnant. The woman declined to go to the hospital for her injuries and said she did not want to press charges. This is Clark’s second arrest during his career with the Wolverines. He pleaded guilty to a second-degree home invasion felony charge after stealing a laptop from a Michigan dormitory in September 2012. Clark paid a fine, was sentenced to 12 months’ probation and was suspended from the team’s season-opening loss to Alabama. He doesn’t deserve nice things. Image via AP

Ex-Radio Jock Sentenced 25 Years For Raping Young Michigan Boy Via NYDailyNews A former Christian radio host who pleaded guilty to raping an 11-year-old Michigan boy was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison Monday. John Balyo, former host of WCSG Radio in Grand Rapids, Mich., faces between 25 and 50 years in prison on one count of first-degree criminal sexual assault. “I am feeling very deep and constant remorse for my actions,” Balyo said in court, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer. “And I want the family to know I am very sorry and wish I could do something to correct what has been done.” Balyo, 35, was arrested in June at a Christian music festival and pleaded guilty in September, telling authorities he paid Ronald Lee Moser, 42, to arrange for him to have sex with a child. Balyo said an 11-year-old boy performed oral sex on him in a motel room, with Moser in the room, in May. The boy turned 12 shortly after the incident, according to the Battle Creek paper. Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Conrad Sindt mandated Balyo register for the sex offenders list and wear an electronic monitor if he ever gets out of prison. Sick f***er. Asked by The Hollywood Reporter about Obama’s claim to have saved Detroit, the Michigan native and liberal filmmaker bristled. “I wrote Obama a letter and I said, ‘Dear President Obama, God Bless you, but you did not save Detroit. You saved General Motors. You saved Chrysler.'” “Detroit at this point would stand a better chance,” the 60-year-old Moore said , “if it were an Iraqi or Syrian city in term of getting some sort of help.” “And I think Obama sadly has done many, many good things, but he’s also been a huge disappointment,” Moore added, not holding back on the POTUS. “I really wish somebody would say to him – maybe I’ll say to him in case he’s watching, you do read The Hollywood Reporter Mr. President, don’t you?” “When the history is written of this era this is how you’ll be remembered: he was the first black president. Family Sues Direct TV For Hiring Registered Sex Offender Cable giant Direct TV is facing a lawsuit from a family who is livid that the company hired a registered sex offender who ended up taking photos of their 12-year-old daughter during an installation service visit. via Huffington Post A Dallas family has sued satellite television provider DirecTV after a man making a service call at their home was found to be a registered sex offender who took photos of their 12-year-old daughter, their lawyer said on Friday. DirecTV said the man had absolutely no affiliation with the company and was brought to the house by a contractor, who has since been fired for violating company policy, spokeswoman Jade Ekstedt said in an email. Wahren Scott Massey, 48, was arrested as a result of the August 2012 incident. Massey pleaded guilty in October to attempted indecency with a child and attempted sexual performance of a child for the pictures he took of the girl. He was sentenced to four years in prison, according to legal documents. The family said in court documents Massey went into a room where their daughter, who was 12 at the time, was alone. The daughter, who is a gymnast, was stretching and said Massey asked to take photos of her on his cell phone with her legs in the air, according to the police report. When Massey left the room, the victim told her mother, who called police. Officers performed a background check on Massey, discovered he had been a registered sex offender in Texas since 1998, and issued a criminal trespass warning. This perv should be ashamed. SMH. Cleveland Hosts 9th Annual Gay Games Via RawStory Thousands of athletes and fans are converging on Cleveland on Saturday for the opening ceremonies of the 9th Gay Games, bringing the international event to a state that has become a key battleground for gay marriage rights. A federal appeals court in Cincinnati this week heard arguments on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky. Gay marriage supporters have seen a series of legal victories around the country since the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional last year. Cleveland was selected in 2009 over Boston, Washington and other large U.S. cities to host the games, held every four years since they debuted in 1982 in San Francisco. Games co-chairman Steve Sokany said he believes the selection of the Midwestern city was about changing hearts and minds and it has received unprecedented corporate sponsorship. “The tide is turning and I think these games can have a tremendous impact,” Sokany said in an interview. “We are trying to change stereotypes.” Public opinion in Ohio on gay rights has shifted over the past decade, reflecting similar changes in other parts of the country. Ohio voters adopted the gay marriage ban in 2004, but recent polls show a majority of Ohio voters support allowing same-sex couples to marry. For those wondering, no, the “Gay Games” is not playing Twister with Michael Sam. In fact… Organizers expect about 25,000 athletes, spectators and volunteers to gather for the games in Cleveland and nearby Akron over the next eight days, injecting an estimated $50 million into the local economy. The competitions include a triathlon and a marathon, as well as softball, volleyball, darts, bowling and cheering. Figure skating is a crowd favorite, according to organizers. The Games feature a wide variety of athletes – young and old, male and female and both gay and straight. Wonder is Lebron James and Johnny Manziel will be making an appearance since this event is all up in their backyard. No pun intended.

Madonna’s oldest child has grown up before out eyes. Seventeen-year-old Lourdes Leon will attend the University of Michigan in the fall, but before setting off on her own, Lourdes had to had one last high school rite of passage to endure, and she did it with the help of some good friends and a few glasses of bubbly. In a blog post titled “Lola Leaves High School,” Lourdes shared a humorous account of her senior prom with the online world. Unfortunately, the aspiring fashion designer may have been a bit too candid in discussing her pre-party shenanigans. “A week before graduation, I attended the classic party every American teenager goes to despite the really bad music,” wrote Lourdes on her website. “This is known as prom. Of course I had a beautiful time, but I’ll attribute that to the fact that I partied with my awesome friends all night.” Despite that “beautiful time,” Lourdes’ post mainly on the lamer parts of the prom, which included, “Awkwardly avoiding teachers because you may or may not have had some champagne and it would be weird to talk to them.” So, Lourdes had some champagne at prom. Big deal, right? Well, it wouldn’t be, were it not for the fact that this is far from the first time that Madonna has been busted letting her kids booze underage. Earlier this year, Madonna posted a photo of her 13-year-old son Rocco holding a liquor bottle , and even that wasn’t the first scandal involving the Material Girl’s kids and drinking. Just a week prior, Rocco was criticized for an Instagram post suggesting that he raids his mom’s liquor cabinet. So while we can all probably that a 17-year-old getting a little tipsy on prom night may not be huge deal, certainly a 13-year-old knocking ’em back with his mom is not cool. Oh, and a word of advice, kids: if you’re gonna drink, at least keep the boozing to after prom.
