Bully Will Be Released Unrated, But Will Theaters Let Kids In?

With the MPAA ruling in favor of upholding Bully ‘s R-rating, the Weinstein Co. has announced that they’ll release the documentary as planned on March 30 — in its full, explicit language-laden unrated cut. The question is, will theaters let minors see it? “I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in,” said director Lee Hirsch in a press release, with TWC marketing head Stephen Bruno adding pressure to the theaters to ” step up and do what’s right .” It’s the latest moral prompt about movies, how we watch them, and whether or not we should let our kids watch them stemming from the tightly executed campaign around the doc, which has become a rallying missive against the widespread epidemic of youth bullying. So fervent is support for Bully that it’s no longer parents or the MPAA who have to get out of the way and let their kids watch it, but now the theater owners who might otherwise bar kids from attending showings of the unrated film. All of which actually raises a good question: Should theater owners and operators step in to help or hinder young audiences from seeing unrated films otherwise deemed rated-R by the MPAA? Perhaps on a case-by-case basis, as opposed to unrated films that contain sexually graphic or violent content, and primarily for younger moviegoers; in this case, Bully ‘s awareness-raising merits seem to outweigh the fact that audiences will hear the f-word uttered a number of times onscreen. When I was a kid, watching R-rated movies on cable TV wasn’t just educational, it was formative. Why not let kids hear a few “fucks” with their civics lessons? In contrast to most theaters’ rules when it comes to R-rated films (No one under 17 admitted without accompanying guardian) or NC-17 films (No one under 17 admitted, period), the unrated label is more ambiguously defined in practice. With a film like Bully — and, more effectively, given the media PR blitz it has going — I can’t imagine any chain operator ticket-taker turning away a group of 12-year-olds that come to watch the film. On the other hand: What if those 12-year-olds then sneak into Project X ?? Full press release follows. March 26, 2012 – New York, NY – After a recent plea to the MPAA by BULLY teen Alex Libby and The Weinstein Company (TWC) Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein failed – by one vote – to get the film its deserved PG-13 rating, TWC is choosing to move forward with releasing the film unrated by the MPAA on March 30. Furthering proof that the R rating for some language is inappropriate for a film that’s meant to educate and help parents, teachers, school officials and children with what’s become an epidemic in schools around the country, the fight against the rating continues on. The outpour of support by politicians, schools, parents, celebrities and activists for the film’s mission to be seen by those it was made for – children – has been overwhelming. Nearly half a million people have signed Michigan high school student and former bullying victim Katy Butler’s petition on Change.org to urge the MPAA to lower the rating. Said BULLY Director Lee Hirsch, “The small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real. It’s what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in.” “The kids and families in this film are true heroes, and we believe theater owners everywhere will step up and do what’s right for the benefit of all of the children out there who have been bullied or may have otherwise become bullies themselves. We’re working to do everything we can to make this film available to as many parents, teachers and students across the country,” said TWC President of Marketing Stephen Bruno. For parents or teachers who are looking for more information or who may have concerns about showing children a movie unrated by the MPAA, please read Common Sense Media’s rating details of the film here: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/bully. “While it’s often heartbreaking and deals with tough issues like suicide, the movie addresses bullying in a frank and relatable way that is age appropriate for teens and relevant for middle schoolers if an adult is present to guide the discussion,” said James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO, Common Sense Media. “The MPAA’s ratings system is inadequate when it comes looking at a movie’s content through the lens of its larger thematic issues. Common Sense Media provides alternative ratings for parents who are looking for more guidance and context than the MPAA provides.” BULLY will be released in theaters on Friday, March 30th in New York at the Angelika Film Center and AMC Lincoln Square and in Los Angeles at The Landmark, ArcLight Hollywood and AMC Century City. BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, BULLY opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole.

Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, Details Lifelong Battle With Anorexia

Kirsten Haglund was crowned Miss America back in 2008, but she was hardly the vision of health and happiness she appeared to be, by her own admission. The blonde beauty has suffered from severe anorexia-nervosa most of her life. The Michigan native, 23, has opened up to CNN about the shocking details of her illness, which she says began to take its toll when she was only 12. Haglund says she picked up bad habits from other aspiring ballet dancers. “I was in ballet from just 3-years-old. So from a very early age, the ideal female body type was very thin,” Haglund says. “That was the first image I had.” “I always equated beauty with being skinny. I looked at what they were doing and so many of them were throwing away their lunches and not eating.” “I thought, ‘If I can at least be thin, I know I can be successful at ballet.’” “I was living off coffee, Diet Coke and gum,” she said about her diet. “Every once in a while, I’d have vegetables, fruit or a spoonful of peanut butter.” “I knew there was something wrong , but I didn’t know how to stop.” Her disease continued to worsen, and in the next three years, Kirsten dropped over 30 more pounds before her mother intervened and got her help. After quitting ballet and focusing on recovery, she decided to enter a local beauty pageant – something that ironically helped her cope with the issue. “It was a really good educational period for me,” she said. “From hearing other people’s stories, I learned how to share my own personal struggles.” The stunner has since started the Kirsten Haglund Foundation, a charity that provides financial aid to people seeking treatment for eating disorders. She is currently a political science major at Emory University. [Photo: WENN.com]

Jay-Z’s Blueprint Inspires Jon Connor To Be ‘The Best’

Rookie MC tells Mixtape Daily he wrote The Blue Album in four days because ‘something just hit me.’ By Rob Markman Jon Connor Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Jon Connor When inspiration strikes Flint, Michigan, rap rookie Jon Connor, he just runs with it. His latest mixtape only took him a few days to write, and after he released The Blue Album on Valentine’s Day, Jon Connor sat down with Mixtape Daily and vowed to never slow down his output. “Maybe I’m biased, but I love The Blue Album . I did it in actually four days, wrote the whole Blue Album in four days because something just hit me,” he said. “I have such a hunger for respect and I want to be the best in the world, I’m gonna be the best in the world, that’s the way I look at it.” The Blue Album is a 14-track dedication to Jay-Z ‘s trilogy of Blueprint albums, with Connor taking instrumentals from each of the three albums and using them to suit his own needs. On “Takeover,” the self-proclaimed People’s Rapper commandeers Jigga’s track of the same name, but instead of throwing shots at specific rival rappers like Hov did, the newcomer keeps his darts ambiguous but still potent. “Best in the World” is a retread of “Hovi Baby,” the TLC-sampling track from The Blueprint 2, and the horn-laced “Thank You” pays homage to Jay’s 2009 The Blueprint 3. To craft an entire mixtape using only Jay-Z beats is a tall order for any rapper, much less the still largely unknown Jon Connor, but the nimble lyricist consistently delivers impressive bars throughout. “I feel that there’s people that know about me, but at the same time it’s still people that’s sleeping,” he said. “I had an epiphany, it’s like if I have to drop a tape every two months to make people respect me or bring people in to where I’m at, then that’s what I’m gonna do. Nothing is gonna stop me, and I think that’s what people are gonna get from The Blue Album. ” What do you think of Jon Connor’s The Blue Album ? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Jay-Z

Gillian Anderson: "I Was a Teenage Lesbian" [PIC]

She’s never discussed it publicly before, but in the new issue of Out magazine, actress Gillian Anderson reveals that she was a bit of a donut-bumper back in her high school days. Gillian says that moving from London to the small city of Grand Rapids, Michigan as a teen was difficult and led to some pretty outrageous behavior, including binge drinking, purple hair..and oh yeah, muff diving: “I was in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I was in high school…Yeah, yeah, well it’s… You know, I’m old enough that I can talk about that,” she says. So why didn’t Gillian mention her bisexual tendencies before? Seems like she simply didn’t want to make it a bigger deal than it was: “If I had thought I was 100% gay, would it have been a different experience for me?…It’s possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys.” Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a new chapter to write for our fanfic, The XXX Files: The Fist Is Up There . Black Keys, My Chemical Romance Lead Musical March Madness’ Midwest

U2, Metallica, Nickelback and more battle it out in a heavyweight region. Voting in all first-round matchups is now live! By James Montgomery U2’s Bono and Dick Vitale Photo: Getty Images MTV’s third-annual Musical March Madness tournament tipped off Monday, with voting opening in all first-round matchups. But with a bracket busting with bands — 64 in all, each battling to hoist the championship trophy when the tournament ends April 3 — we realize that choosing your favorites in each contest can be a daunting task (unless your favorite happens to be Tokio Hotel — they’re having no problem racking up the votes). After all, sometimes even the selection committee has a difficult time distinguishing between AWOLNATION and Five Finger Death Punch. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! So with first-round voting open until Sunday (polls close at midnight ET), we’re going to spend the next few days breaking down each Musical March Madness region, starting with the mighty, meaty Midwest, a bracket loaded with meat-and-potatoes rock acts … and, uh, Bon Iver, too. Can the top-seeded Black Keys run the table? Will MMM superpowers My Chemical Romance continue their tradition of deep tournament runs? Or, like last year, will the Midwest go to an upset-minded underdog, like Chevelle or Sum 41? Read on for our picks in each opening-round tilt. #1 The Black Keys vs. #16 AWOLNATION: On the surface, the Keys should win this one with ease. Then again, as any MMM historian will surely tell you, the three-year history of the tournament is littered with jaw-dropping upsets (like #16 the Hold Steady knocking off #1 Nickelback in 2010, or 16th-seeded Sum 41 dumping #1 Arcade Fire last year). Still, with so much momentum — back-to-back breakout albums, a sold-out arena U.S. arena tour — we like Auerbach and Carney over a very game Aaron Bruno. #2 Bon Iver vs. #15 Sum 41: The pride of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, faces off against the pride of Ajax, Ontario, in this opening-round barn-burner. Bon Iver was a surprise second seed in the Midwest (geography was a determining factor, as always), while one could argue that, based on last year’s MMM run alone, Sum 41 should be way higher than a 15 seed. Bad news for the bearded one, we’re taking tourney-tested Sum 41 for the upset. #3 Pearl Jam vs. #14 Five Finger Death Punch: It’s rock legends versus fast-rising, faster-playing metallers here, and though Pearl Jam currently hold a rather-sizeable lead so far, we’re not writing off Five Finger Death Punch just yet. Hard-rock bands tend to do surprisingly well in MMM (they’re fans vote equally hard), which is why, we think by week’s end, it’ll be the Death Punch who roll to round two. #4 U2 vs. #13 Modest Mouse: Last year, U2 were a surprise early exit, losing to eventual champs Green Day in round two, while Modest Mouse have never made it out of the first round of the tourney. Based on that alone, we’re taking Bono and Co. here, though, after one day of voting, this one is still pretty close. #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #12 Death Cab for Cutie: MCR are the only band in MMM history to make the Final Four twice, including a heartbreaking championship-game loss to Coheed and Cambria in 2010. Death Cab? Uh, yeah … they’ve been to the second round. Once. This one won’t even be close: MCR are going far in this tourney. #6 Kid Rock vs. #11 Chevelle: It’s Michigan versus Illinois in this first-round barnburner, which could have been an actual NCAA tournament matchup if Illinois didn’t suck so bad this year. Kid Rock has been getting in touch with his Seger side in recent years, while Chevelle roared back in 2011 with the (actually pretty great) Hats Off to the Bull , and so far, it’s the rockers who hold a commanding lead over the Kid. Can they hold on? We’ll say they do, and advance to the second round. #7 Metallica vs. #10 Guns N’ Roses: A true clash of the titans, this one could go either way (though it hopefully won’t end like the pair’s 1992 Montreal show did, with both James Hetfield and the city set on fire). Understandably, this one is currently the closest matchup in the entire tournament, with the Gunners holding a .02 percent edge. There’s a whole week still to go, but this one might be too close to call. #8 Nickelback vs. #9 Rise Against!: A total style clash in every conceivable way, Rise Against! jumped out to an early lead, but thanks to some feverish tweeting , Nickelback have swung things in their favor. It’s still close, but we think Kroeger and Co. pull it out — if only because we suspect a Black Keys/Nickelback second-rounder will be, uh, interesting . MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is underway! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos Musical March Madness Returns! Ballers: Money Mitt Romney’s Wife Ann Says “I Don’t Consider Myself Wealthy, We Can Be Poor In Spirit”

Whatever beyotch, these Romney characters are worth at least $250 Million, and this heffa is talking about she ain’t wealthy: Apparently “Romneying” — defined as “accidentally bragging about your place high up in the economic stratosphere” — runs in the family. His wife, Ann Romney, inexplicably talked about her wealth this afternoon during an interview on Fox News. “We can be poor in spirit, and I don’t even consider myself wealthy, which is an interesting thing, it can be here today and gone tomorrow,” she said. The couple made $20.9 million last year, making more in a day than an average American makes in a year, and are worth about $250 million overall. From discussing his NASCAR team-owning friends, to saying he likes firing people, to bragging about Ann’s two Cadillacs, Mitt also has a problem with accidentally and inappropriately touting his enourmous wealth. And… She added: “How I measure riches is by the friends I have and the loved ones I have and the people that I care about in my life, and that’s where my values are and that’s where my riches are.” A Romney spokeswoman said the full interview showed what Mrs. Romney meant by her remarks. Mitt Romney has drawn criticism for offhand remarks that point to the wide economic divide separating him and nearly all other Americans. His 2010 tax returns show he earned about $21.7 million from his investments and, after charitable donations, paid about 14 percent in federal income taxes. While campaigning in Michigan, Romney referred to his wife driving “a couple of Cadillacs” as he pointed to his longstanding support of American automakers. At other times during his campaign for the Republican nomination, Romney has referred to the $373,000 he earned in speaking fees over two years as “not very much” and once bet a Republican rival $10,000 to make a point. Romney has also said he was “not concerned about the very poor” and, while referring to insurance companies, remarked, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.” Do you believe this broad??? Mitt Romney Wins GOP Wyoming Caucus

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has won Wyoming’s presidential caucus vote, a series of county straw polls that took place over the last three weeks. At 39 percent, Romney bested Rick Santorum (32 percent), Ron Paul (21 percent) and Newt Gingrich (8 percent). The Wyoming GOP released the results Wednesday. Like Iowa’s caucus, Wyoming’s is not binding and will in no way affect the state’s 29 delegates to the national convention, where the nominee will be formally chosen. More attention will likely be paid to Wyoming’s county conventions, held March 6-10, which will directly elect 12 delegates to the Republican National Convention. Its April state convention , which will elect another 14 delegates … none of which will be allocated (or “bound”) to any of the four remaining presidential candidate. Each will have to announce support for a candidate or “undecided.” Confused yet? Only 2,108 total votes were cast in Wyoming, the least populous U.S. state (fun fact). Nevada, the next smallest caucus to date, saw more than 30,000 GOP votes. Also like in Iowa, the precinct caucuses served another function, besides recording a presidential-preference vote: electing delegates to Wyoming’s later conventions. If Romney’s win in Wyoming is any indication, he’ll receive more backing than his rivals from Wyoming’s unbound national delegates at the GOP convention. Romney won Michigan and Arizona Tuesday. Ten states cast ballots next week, on Super Tuesday, in an increasingly important date for his three competitors.
