Harvey Weinstein’s Bully Problem — and Ours

You’ve heard about Bully , right? The anti-bullying documentary featuring real video of real teenage bullies tormenting real peers, interspersed with experts and victims alike expounding on our ongoing bullying epidemic? Of course you have, because when The Weinstein Company wasn’t shoving its 2012 Oscar crop down your throat, it was protesting way too much about a ratings “controversy” that would require youngsters under 17 to attend the doc with a parent or guardian. God forbid! Because the last thing we want is parents and teens watching and ideally discussing a film about bullying, right? I privately vowed not to succumb to this most ironic of Weinsteinian pursuits : The most legendary bully of the modern Hollywood era releasing a movie about bullies, and then publicly bullying the MPAA over the last week with his outraged! Campaign! To overturn Bully ‘s R rating for language! For the children! No, really: “I have been compelled by the filmmakers and the children to fight for an exception,” Weinstein said in a statement . ” I want every child, parent, and educator in America to see Bully , so it is imperative for us to gain a PG-13 rating.” That was followed by a riotous threat to take “a leave of absence from the MPAA” after the rating was upheld on appeal (by reportedly one vote, which was awfully convenient for the press-release narrative, but hey). Such altruism, Harvey, seriously. But what do we do when commentators as smart and influential as Andrew Sullivan are taking Harvey’s bait not once , not twice but three times , or when the tired, transparent King’s Speech / Blue Valentine -esque gambits that evoke Harvey’s singular genius transcend PR stuntery to become… uh, this: a ” Human Rights Petition ” launched by a Michigan high-schooler seeking a PG-13 for Bully : When I was in 7th grade, a few guys came up behind me while putting my books in my locker. They called me names and asked me why I even bothered to show my face at school because no one liked me. I ignored them because I was scared of what else they might say and who else they might tell if I stood up to them. When I went to shut my locker, they pushed me against the wall. Then they slammed my locker shut on my hand, breaking my fourth finger. I held back tears while I watched them run away laughing. I didn’t know what to do so I stood there, alone and afraid. I just heard that the Motion Picture Association of America has given an “R” rating to Bully — a new film coming out soon that documents the epidemic of bullying in American schools. Because of the R rating, most kids won’t get to see this film. No one under 17 will be allowed to see the movie, and the film won’t be allowed to be screened in American middle schools or high schools. Wow. OK. Setting aside the exploitation of a young woman’s traumatic bullying experience and the blatant untruth that an R-rating precludes Bully ‘s exhibition in American middle schools or high schools (as though Congress passed some constitutional amendment outlawing parental permission slips), there is no fundamental “human right” dictating that Weinstein Company releases must be viewable by everybody. What’s happening presently in Syria is a human-rights issue. This is a crass, cynical marketing ploy by a man who eats Oscars and shits Tonys . Let’s also not forget many distributors’ long-standing frustration with what they term the inconsistency of the MPAA ratings board — the application of one ratings standard to Film A and another to Film B (often perceived as a major studio vs. indie conflict, but if The Weinstein Company isn’t a major after Sunday night , then nothing is). As it did a little over a year ago with The King’s Speech , the board counted the F-bombs and issued the R-rating consistent with numerous prior films it had also rated R. About time, right? Not for Harvey, who knew both the box-office impositions that The King’s Speech and Bully would face when he got into bed with each of them and the MPAA mileage he could milk from both contretemps. The kvetching commenced immediately. In other words, this isn’t the MPAA’s problem, and anyone who attempts to persuade you that it is is either misinformed or a bald-faced liar. Or he’s Harvey Weinstein, who can be both those things in equal measure but most often plays the showman middle with mastery beyond reproach. This, however, with Harvey himself publicly invoking his “school-age children of my own” and openly acknowledging in one statement how “the Cincinnati school district signed on to bus 40,000 of their students to the movie – but because the appeals board retained the R rating, the school district will have to cancel those plans”? This is just… gross. It’s also socially counterintuitive, as noted by at least a couple of Sullivan’s readers who chimed in on the matter today: “At a movie theater on Friday night, I saw numerous young children (ages 5-10, or so) in line with their parents to see the R-rated Act of Valor , the new action movie/recruitment video starring active-duty Navy SEALs that goes as far as depicting torture. I’m assuming that those parents thought that seeing our country defended on screen so violently would be a positive, character-building experience for their children. Although I would personally disagree, every parent does and should have the right to make those decisions for their children. My hope and expectation is that parents would bring their children to see Bully as well.” “What the R rating for Bully does mean is that teenagers (supposedly) can’t see it with their friends, where they might decide to be assholes and cheer for the bullies throughout. This might be a good thing.” Amen. Anyway, the panic continues and barring some sort of bleep-tastic editing revisions, Bully is and shall remain rated R for strong language. Or maybe we can make it silent, black-and-white and splice in a certain charismatic Jack Russell terrier ? Whatever it takes, Harvey! Whatever it takes. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Mitt Romney Pretends to Love Michigan

Cyborg Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is campaigning in Michigan ahead of Tuesday’s primary, and boy, does he just love everything about that state! Mitt’s pandering speech last week was remarkable in how forced it sounded, even by his standards, as the Michigan native tried to convince residents he is one of them. It was a performance reminiscent of Steve Carell in Anchorman , when Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy asks, “Are you just naming things you see and saying you love them?” Watch a mashup of that scene and Romney’s press conference below: Mitt Romney Loves Michigan So Hard The trees are the right height. Take note, Michigan Department of Tourism. There’s your new tagline if ever we’ve heard one. “Pure Michigan” was so 2011.

Amber Portwood: Turning Down Plea Bargain to Continue Filming Teen Mom?

Troubled Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is considering NOT taking a plea deal because it would effectively end her reality TV career , according to reports. Amber is supposed to be released from jail into the care of a halfway house this week after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance. She may end up changing her plea, however, so she can continue shooting Teen Mom as much as possible, sources tell E! News . Why on Earth … Portwood, who faces up to five years in jail if she violates probation, is not going to change her plea because she wants to sit in a cell instead. It is true, though, that the drug court that’s allowing Portwood to rehabilitate at the halfway house has ordered the facility not to allow cameras. For Amber Portwood , this is a very big deal. Last week, she said she had been under the impression that she would be allowed to live with her grandparents and film Teen Mom while fulfilling the terms of her sentence (counseling, regular check-ins with the court, etc.). Being ordered to a halfway house caught her by surprise. In order to stay out of jail, she was ordered to spend eight months at the halfway house and get a full-time job … one that does not involve TV. The third season of Teen Mom is set to premiere April 3, so that would leave Amber SOL and without the paycheck she’s come to depend on. As such, Amber decided Saturday that she may rather “do her time now and get it out of the way,” and the halfway house is “not the right place for her.” It wouldn’t be the full five years, presumably, if she did agree to serve jail time. We are probably talking about a couple of months, tops. After which, she would be free to film, without stipulations. “The system doesn’t want Amber to succeed,” a friend said. “She needs to stay in the entertainment industry. There are no jobs in Anderson (Ind.). She needs to finish her schooling. She can’t do all of that with a $7-an-hour job.” Baby daddy Gary Shirley currently has custody of her daughter, Leah.

American Reunion Trailer: One Thumb Up!

On April 6, the cast from American Pie will reunite for their 10th high school reunion in East Great Falls, Michigan, and so much has changed. Or not at all. The new American Reunion trailer below shows Seann William Scott in all his glory as the sex-crazed, pot-stirring Stifler, while Jason Biggs’ Jim is married with a kid. When a girl he used to babysit invites Jim to her 18th birthday party, Stifler wants him to hit it, to which Jim says, “I’m not going to cheat on my wife. I’m a father.” Stifler’s eloquent response: “Be her daddy.” Classy as always! American Reunion Trailer (Full Length) Another classic, revolting moment: Jim’s dad telling him all the good things a man can do with a strategically placed thumb. Some things never change … American Reunion also brings back Mena Suvari, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Shannon Elizabeth, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nichols and Jennifer Coolidge.

Our History Makers: Magic Johnson

Continue reading here:

Magic Johnson is in many ways the starting point guard for Black America. To really register this, you have to look outside of Los Angeles Lakers history and really go into his own personal story of life and experiences. This 6’9″ kid out of Lansing, Michigan has dropped some serious dimes on and off the court, and we have indeed benefited. 1. Surviving With HIV – In 1991 HIV/AIDS was the ultimate death certificate. No one had no idea when Magic would go but the world and even he himself thought it would be soon. Magic was forced to retire from the game he loved after severe scare from some NBA players due to lack of knowledge. He would indeed flip this negative to a positive using his status to make people aware of HIV when he shot the video “Time Out” with popular night host and actor Arsenio Hall. His contributions and information has helped thousands and possibly millions protect themselves from HIV or has helped people learn how to live with it. It has been officially 20 years since that 1991 press conference yet Magic is still pushing awareness and protection and wants people to know ”He’s Lucky and just because he has lived this long it doesn’t mean anyone else will” 2. Magic Johnson Theaters – In the year 1994 Magic took a shot at the movie industry. Although at the time his vision of putting plush and high quality multiplexes in urban communities seemed crazy and a sure-fire fail, Magic showed that when he is involved in “Showtime” it’s a huge success! His theaters opened on Crenshaw in Los Angeles California and in Harlem New York. It 10-15 screen theaters with SDDS Stereo and Stadium seating not only became a great entertainment place but it also created more jobs and created economic growth in the cities they were placed in. Some theaters still remain. A merger with Loews Cineplex and now a full ownership by AMC has freed Magic’s hands to work on other projects. 3. Starbucks – Although not founded by him or even created by him…Magic Johnson is a major piece in the success of Starbucks! How? Well he built 114 of them across the US! This then lead to the National exposure through word of mouth, commercial advertising and consistent growth of the business. He went in 50/50 with Howard Schultz and is solely responsible for Starbucks being in minority communities 4. Avant – A common unknown fact is Magic Johnson Music. Magic was on a roll through the 90’s despite his HIV announcement. With all of his business success rolling he took a shot at being CEO of his own record label! Who was his first artist to release and have success??? Ohio native Avant! Check out his cameo in Avant’s first video! Avant would later release “My Thoughts” which would have hit single “Separated” on the album and further make him a mainstay in the R&B world an being compared vocally to R. Kelly. 5. Minority Owner – Before Bob Johnson, Nelly, Usher and Jay-Z it was Magic Johnson who first put in his Minority ownership bid to be apart of the team that he helped take to NBA Titles! The year was 1994 and the estimated percent was 10 which is a MAJOR DEAL for not only African Americans in the NBA but Also Athletes. There had been black Player Coaches [Bill Russell] and GM [Elgin Baylor] but no minority ownership at that time. Magic found yet another way to show there is plenty of life after basketball. Magic has now sold his share of The Lakers and is looking into buying both The LA Dodgers and His hometown team, The Detroit Pistons! The underlying blessing that Magic Johnson has been to Black America is truly immeasurable. From poor Midwest kid, to HIV stricken pro athlete to Multimillionaire and businessman with family Magic proves that no obstacle is too big if you truly want to be as great as your dreams! – written by @itsthecaptain
