Gay Michigan student defends suspended teacher

A 14-year-old who issued an impassioned defense of a suspended teacher has become a bit of an Internet folk hero in a new viral video. Over the weekend, gossip blogger Perez Hilton and several other high-traffic sites picked up the video, which features the dramatic testimonial of Ann Arbor, Mich., teen Graeme Taylor. Taylor told the Howell, Mich., school board last week that he attempted suicide at age 9 because he was bullied for being gay. He was speaking on behalf of Howell High teacher Jay McDowell, who had been suspended for two days for asking a student to remove her Confederate flag belt buckle and for ejecting two students from class after a heated exchange about gay rights. According to Livingston Daily reporter Jason Carmel Davis, McDowell was suspended after he ejected 16-year-old junior Daniel Glowacki and another student from his classroom. Glowacki objected to his teacher asking a fellow student to remove her Confederate flag belt buckle. The school was participating in Spirit Day on Oct. 20, a voluntary event for students designed to raise awareness about anti-gay bullying. Glowacki apparently argued with McDowell over the request to remove the buckle, asking how his classmate's Confederate flag insignia was different from the students wearing purple for Spirit Day. The local union says the student also made “inappropriate and offensive statements regarding gay students.” Lindsey Forbes, spokeswoman for the local teachers union, the Howell Education Association, tells The Lookout that McDowell followed school policy in asking for the belt buckle to be removed. Teachers are supposed to ask students to remove “inappropriate” or distracting clothing, she says. Confederate flags are not specifically listed as inappropriate, but Forbes says the flag is a symbol of hate, especially in Howell. Two years ago, a group of students were investigated by the Department of Justice for starting a Facebook group that used the Confederate flag as its profile photo and featured hate speech. Two students were suspended. An area north of Howell also had an active Ku Klux Klan membership in the '70s and '80s, according to the Livingston County Press. “It's pretty clear in our community what that symbol stands for,” Forbes says. McDowell was suspended for one day without pay after the student in question complained about the removal of her belt buckle. The staff attorney for Michigan's American Civil Liberties Union chapter, Jay Kaplan, tells The Lookout that the case represents a “balancing act” between protecting free speech and creating a safe school environment, but that both students were most likely protected by the First Amendment. “Wearing [the Confederate flag] on the belt buckle probably is protected speech,” he said, based on court precedents. “The situation where the student expressed his disapproval of homosexuality is also protected speech.” He said the “well-meaning” McDowell should have instead started a discussion about why the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate for so many and how denigrating homosexuality marginalizes gay people. The ACLU has offered to host training sessions for teachers about what the law says. McDowell, who is also president of the local teachers union, is appealing the decision, and is back at work while his grievance is pending–a procedure that has been known to take as long as a year. Howell High is holding a “diversity forum” Monday night to talk about the issue. According to the union, the school has no specific policy prohibiting anti-gay bullying. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101115/us_yblog_thelookout/gay-michig… added by: onemalefla

ABC Touts O’Donnell’s Witchcraft Comments: Will Remarks Continue to ‘Haunt’ Candidate?

Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos on Monday asserted that the White House wants to “deliver” the message that the Tea Party is too extreme. He then highlighted 11-year-old comments, asking Representative Mike Pence about Christine O’Donnell’s past comments on witchcraft: “She says it was just a little high school fun. Is that enough?” In a 1999 appearance on Politically Incorrect, O’Donnell told host Bill Maher that she dabbled in witchcraft and dated a Satanist. An ABC graphic hyped, “Witchcraft Talk Haunts Candidate: O’Donnell Asked to Explain Remarks.” Playing up a Republican split, Stephanopoulos cited an unlikely expert, Karl Rove, as he interviewed Pence: “You heard Karl Rove say that Christine O’Donnell is going to have to explain the witchcraft comments.” On September 15 , the GMA anchor pointed out that Rove criticized the “nutty” things the Delaware senatorial nominee has said in the past. The engineer of two presidential victories for George W. Bush isn’t often extolled on Good Morning America. Stephanopoulos, a former top aide to Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton,  recited more Democratic talking points for the midterm election: STEPHANOPOULOS: But, as you know, Congressman, speaking of the message, you know that the Democrats and the White House are going to try to take the position of Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller from Alaska and say that it’s signs of a radical takeover in the Republican Party. Christine O’Donnell also says that integrating women into the military institutes will cripple the readiness of our defense. Joe Miller up in Alaska says that unemployment benefits are unconstitutional. Are those provisions you’re willing to run by? A transcript of the September 20 segment, which aired at 7:09am EDT, follows: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: But, the message is what the White House wants to deliver in this election season. Thanks, Jake. And for more on all this, we’re joined by the man who beat out Sarah Palin and other Republican stars at the Values Voter presidential straw poll this weekend, Indiana Congressman Mike Pence, The chairman of the House Republican Conference. Congratulations on your victory, Congressman. REP. MIKE PENCE: Thank you, George. STEPHANOPOULOS: I know that after that you said you wanted to focus on getting back to the House for Republicans. But is it fair to conclude that your victory Saturday increases your chances that you’ll run for President? PENCE: Well, look, I was very honored and, frankly, humbled as we walked out of the Purdue/Ball State game on Saturday and received word about that affirmation from folks who attended the Values Voters Summit in Washington. But our focus, George, and I think so the focus of every American who is tired of runaway federal spending, borrowing, bailouts and takeovers needs to be on November 2nd. You know, we’ll let the future take care of itself. But, for now, the reason I’m here in Michigan today- gonna be campaigning with Tim Wahlberg down in Battle Creek.. The reason we’re traveling all across the country the American people won back the people’s house for the common sense and common values of this nation. STEPHANOPOULOS: Okay. So we’ll have you back in November when you’re ready to make the announcement. I’ll invite you back then . But, let’s talk a little bit about the midterms and that victory last week by Christine O’Donnell and all the comments coming out over the weekend. You heard Karl Rove say that Christine O’Donnell is going to have to explain the witchcraft comments. She says it was just a little high school fun. Is that enough? PENCE: Well, look, I think that’s up to the voters in Delaware to decide. And certainly, Christine O’Donnell, you know, has an obligation to explain those public statements. But, you know, welcome to the silly season, George. I mean, suddenly now, Bill Maher is the vanguard of religion in America. [Laughs.] Come on. You know, Christine O’Donnell’s success or the success of Joe Miller in Alaska or people like Marco Rubio in Florida is less about that the messenger, it’s more about the message. What’s bringing everyday Americans into the streets, out to Tea Party meetings and town hall meetings is the realization that our government has run off the rails. And the American people recognize they’ve got to take the reins back in the government. And they’re looking for men and women of courage who are willing to stand up and take on the establishment in Washington, D.C. And I expect, come November 2nd, those issues and that message is going to carry the day. And not all of this back and forth. STEPHANOPOULOS: But, as you know, Congressman, speaking of the message, you know that the Democrats and the White House are going to try to take the position of Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller from Alaska and say that it’s signs of a radical takeover in the Republican Party. Christine O’Donnell also says that integrating women into the military institutes will cripple the readiness of our defense. Joe Miller up in Alaska says that unemployment benefits are unconstitutional. Are those provisions you’re willing to run by? PENCE [Laughs]: Nice try, George. Look- STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, what’s the answer? PENCE: Look, look, I’ve been traveling around the country for candidates and I’ve attended Tea Party rallies. Did one about a week ago in Washington D.C. with tens of thousands of Americans. But, in my town hall meeting two years ago, people poured into my home community in Columbus, Indiana because they’re fed up. They’re fed up with runaway federal spending in both political parties. And I think they’re going to see through this typical, nitpicking, and we’re going to pull things out of context. And we’re going to try and put people in the worst possible light. They’re going to say, “Look, just bring us men and women that are willing to go to Washington, D.C., put our fiscal house in order, get this economy moving, respect the common values of the American people.” And I think that’s going to carry the day on Election Day. STEPHANOPOULOS: So, that’s my last question. We only have ten seconds left. Bottom line, do you think Republicans win back the House? PENCE: I think they have a profound opportunity. But it’s up to the American people that cherish conservative values, to do everything they can between now and November 2nd to win back the people’s house for the common sense and common values of the majority of this country.

The pop supernova’s “Bad Romance” and the chart-topping MC’s “Not Afraid” will also face off in the coveted Video of the Year category After pulling off a slew of all-star guest appearances and shutting things down with two triumphant high-energy D-Town shows, Em will hit the stage at the VMAs , which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on September 12. Although she “loves Eminem,” one D-Town fan gave Hov’s set the biggest props. “It had to be Jigga. Coming from underneath, giving a shout-out to [Michael Jackson], it was Jigga,” she said. Another concertgoer said witnessing the hip-hop heavyweights rip up the stage with one of their classic collabos was her favorite moment of the night. “Probably when Eminem and Jay-Z got on the stage together [for ‘Renegade’],” Lindsay said, describing the show highlight. “That was pretty tight.” Fellow audience member Bridget echoed the same sentiment, bellowing, “Renegade!” Some fans loved when Em made a move that few hip-hop stars have the clout to pull off, and brought out his mentor, Aftermath kingpin and rap pioneer Dr. Dre. “My favorite part was when Dr. Dre came out,” said Jen, who was accompanied by a fellow Doc-loving pal. “We’ve been … big [fans] for forever.” As Jay-Z and Em signed off from the Motor City, many fans were amped they were able to witness the historic show firsthand. “I’m glad I was a part of it,” said Dianca. “It was a great concert, it was awesome. Eminem, Jay-Z Fans Travel Across U.S. For Detroit Concert

‘You’ll never see anything like it again,’ one fan says of hip-hop legends’ joint show. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Eminem and Jay-Z (file) Photo: Getty Images Very rarely do two hip-hop titans of Eminem and Jay-Z’s caliber team up to mount a series of stadium shows for their legions of rabid fans. Still, it’s astonishing to see the lengths that Shady and Hov heads would go to see the pair onstage. Their fans crisscrossed the country to see the duo light up the stage at Comerica Park in Em’s hometown of Detroit. The Thursday (September 2) event is the first stop on the duo’s Home and Home Tour and their followers showed major support; braving a possible downpour and donning Jay and Em memorabilia. “We’re all psyched,” said one fan who had rolled to the concert with three other homies. “How many times do you get to see Eminem play in his [hometown of] Detroit?” The fan, sporting a Jigga/Eminem T-shirt, added that the outing was really special because it was the first live show he’d attended. “The fact that it’s Eminem and Jay-Z just helps a lot.” Kipper revealed that he and his buddy J.T. traveled from Green Bay, Wisconsin, to take in the show. “I … came down to [see] something different, something big. This is the biggest concert of the year,” he marveled. “You’ll never see anything like it again.” Two of the rappers’ most dedicated fans not only crossed state lines to catch the Comerica show but even employed their passports, trekking from Ottawa, Canada, for the collabo show. “I really hope Eminem plays ‘Going Through Changes’ [from Recovery ]. I really like that song,” said Karen who, along with her friend, had fashioned homemade tees emblazoned with lyrics from The Eminem Show ‘s “Superman” and two Jay-Z’s smashes, “Run This Town” and “99 Problems.” Another fan, Jay, who traveled from Pittsburgh, was happy that Em was giving back to his hometown in the form of a major musical event. “He should show the love from where he came from. They helped him to get where he’s at. The least [he] could do is put on a big-bang show for ’em [and] show some respect,” he said. He added that he was checking out the show to see some of the game’s most talented MCs show their skills. “I mean, the best two lyricists to ever do it [are performing]. So, I’m trying to come and get some knowledge real quick.” Not even bad weather could stop fans from seeing the Grammy-winning legends hit the stage. “I’m just so pumped to see it,” “D” said. “I’ll see it in the rain, I don’t care.” One concertgoer, who donned a tank top that read “#1 Fan,” had a personal message for Shady: “Eminem if you ever see this, my name is Lindsay and I go to Michigan State and you should totally call me.” Are you going to see Jay-Z and Eminem in concert?
