How "Green" Is Gaming?

April 22 is Earth Day, 24 hours devoted to considering the impact we have on the natural world and (hopefully) improving our relationship with the planet. It might seem like gaming is low-impact in terms of the environment — after all, you’re just sitting there staring at a screen as opposed to burning tires or releasing mercury into the water supply — but the video game industry does have an effect on the planet. Gamepro recently looked into it and compiled and interesting and/or enlightening article on the impact video games have on Nature. Among the big three consoles, Nintendo’s Wii uses the least power, but, overall, Nintendo has the lowest rating in eco-friendliness among game system manufacturers, according to a Greenpeace report published in January. This isn’t to say Microsoft and Sony are eco-warriors. In the list of consumer electronic manufacturers, Microsoft was second-to-worst and Sony was in the middle of the pack. While the video game industry

Latest Xbox 360 Update Live, USB Support Added

The latest Xbox 360 system update has gone live, and with it comes the ability to use USB flash drives to store up to 16GB of content (profiles, game saves, downloadable content, etc.). While you can use any USB flash drive you want (assuming the 360 doesn’t flatly reject it), Microsoft is currently taking pre-orders for their own pre-configured 8GB drive from SanDisk, which also comes with a one-month Xbox Live Gold membership, that’s expected to go on sale next month. I haven’t had a chance to throw in a USB drive and test out the configuration and transferring process yet, but I’m guessing some of you have. What’s the verdict? Any problems so far? Remedy Was Too Small To Develop Alan Wake For PC And Xbox 360

By now, PC owners have hopefully come to grips with the fact that Remedy Game’s thriller Alan Wake will not be released on their console of choice when it hits store shelves May 18. Back in February, Microsoft confirmed that the PC version of the game had been canceled, because Microsoft had wanted to match “this specific game to the right platform.” Turns out that this was more of a half-truth, as Remedy recently told Digital Spy a different tale regarding the ill-fated PC version of Alan Wake . “We’re a small studio, about 50 people. Concentrating on one platform is just a lot easier for us where we’re smaller than other studios, and it’s just been focused on one platform and getting that done. We have no plans for the PC right now.” Remedy had always said that Microsoft ultimately had the final say about Alan Wake on the PC, but the “we just didn’t have the manpower to pull off a PC version too” reality of the situation clearly played a much larger role in the 360 exclusivity decision than previously thought. Given what’s been shown of the game over the past few months, it looks like focusing on the 360 version was the absolutely right way to go. Guess we’ll find out in a few months. Source: Digital Spy

Microsoft’s Project Natal Built On PrimeSense Motion Technology

Microsoft announced today that 3D motion technology firm PrimeSense contributed an “important component” for Microsoft’s Project Natal motion control system. “The engagement with Xbox 360 establishes PrimeSense’s position as a leading supplier of 3D-sensing technology,” PrimeSense chief executive officer Inon Beracha said in a statement to the press today. “We are especially honored to have a partner like Microsoft who share our vision for bringing innovative and engaging natural experiences to consumers.” It isn’t clear exactly how much of PrimeSense’s own tech was used in the development of Natal, however according to PrimeSense president and founder Aviad Maizels, “Xbox 360 Hardware Engineering teams developed the ‘Project Natal’ sensor based on the PrimeSensor reference design to support the special requirements” of Natal. Considering this PrimeSense’s demo reel features a couple browsing movies with hand gestures — a scene later mirrored almost exactly in Natal’s E3 2009 promotional video (skip to 3:10) — it appears that PrimeSense’s role has been largely concentrated on the user interface/dashboard control aspect of Natal, as opposed to game integration. But then again, Microsoft has yet to share those details, so nothing is known for sure. Should the need arise, feel free to E-Mail me your tips, suggestions, and/or personal philosophies, or follow me on Twitter .
