By Gil Kaufman Photo: Sandy Huffaker/Getty Images It took a little longer than planned, but Tuesday (September 20) marks the official end of the U.S. military’s controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The 1993 law that allowed gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces as long as they kept their orientation secret officially went off the books as of 12:01 a.m. EDT, putting an end to a rule that drew fire from scores of gay activists and supporters over the years, including Lady Gaga and Katy Perry . While some in Congress have said they oppose the ruling, CBS News reported that top leaders in the Pentagon have expressed confidence that the change will not undermine the military’s ability to recruit or fight wars and will not have a negative impact on troop morale. “The law is repealed,” the Army announced plainly in a statement, which included a reminder to soldiers to treat each other fairly and with respect. The White House sent out an official tweet with the news as well, which read, “As of 12:01 a.m., the repeal of the discriminatory law known as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ finally & formally takes effect.” As of last week, the Pentagon said 97 percent of the military had already undergone training under the new law and the armed services have been accepting applications from openly gay recruits for weeks. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton celebrated with a tweet early Tuesday morning, writing, “R.I.P. #DADT. And good riddance!” Gaga, who arrived at the 2010 MTV VMAs with openly gay service members who had been discharged or left the military due to the policy, made viral videos and spoke at a September 2010 rally calling for the end of DADT, tweeted her emotional reaction to the repeal last year. “Can’t hold back the tears+pride. We did it! Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS,” she wrote back on December 18 when the Senate voted to officially repeal the measure.

South Korean men are required by law to serve for 21 months in the armed forces and must enlist before they turn 30. Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, had previously deferred his enlistment twice. But, IHOP isn’t safe anymore though??? Three people lost their lives to senseless violence at an IHOP in Nevada this morning, and the gunman was too chicken to face the music and at least explain why he thought what he was doing made sense. A gunman opened fire inside a Nevada IHOP Tuesday morning, shooting nine people – five of them National Guardsmen – with an automatic rifle, officials and witnesses said. Three people died. Among the dead were two uniformed Guardsmen, one a man and the other a woman, officials said. After his rampage at the Carson City pancake joint near the state Capitol, the gunman shot himself in the head. He died a few hours later without regaining conciousness, the sheriff’s department said. His motive remained unknown. A spokesman for the Nevada National Guard said a number of uniformed Guardsmen were having a regularly scheduled breakfast meeting at the restaurant. He said the gunman was not a Guardsman. Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong said he didn’t know if the gunman set out to target the military, but it added an urgent new dimension to the investigation. “You just don’t know if this gentleman was working by himself,” the sheriff said. Eyewitness Ralph Swagler told the Reno Gazette-Journal he had a handgun and could have tried to kill the gunman, but was afraid to open fire because the shooter had a powerfil automatic rifle. “This happens in third-world countries, not here,” Swagler said. Cops traced the gunman’s car registration, but did not immediately release the shooter’s identity. The nearby Nevada capitol, governor’s office and supreme court were locked down as a precaution. Swagler, who owns a barbecue restaurant next to the IHOP, said he saw the gunman pull up in a blue minivan around 9 a.m. He said the man shot a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the IHOP and started shooting. After several minutes, Swagler said the gunman reemerged into the strip mall parking lot and began firing at his eatery, Locals Barbecue, and an H&R Block storefront. Kurt Angle has been pinned by the law once again. The former Olympic Gold Medalist and WWE star, and current TNA employee, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of drink driving. The wrestler’s rental car was spotted swerving on I-66 by another vehicle, the driver of which dialed 911. Virginia State Troopers subsequently arrived on scene, pulled Angle over and took him to Warren County Jail, where he was later released on $2,000 bond. Angle was previously arrested in March charged with “being in control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated,” after parking on a median and failing a field sobriety test. He was also booked (though later acquitted) in 2007 for DUI and careless driving.
A number of military veterans are demanding an apology from Soulja Boy after the rapper ignited a wave of controversy with his song, “Let’s Be Real.” After plugging his Twitter page (really), Soulja drops this bomb: “F**k the FBI and the army troops … fighting for what? Be your own man … I’ll be flying through the clouds with green like I’m Peter Pan.” Mmmyeah. Soulja Boy – Let’s Be Real Fred A. Flores, a retired U.S. Marine and commissioner for the L.A. County Veteran’s Advisory Commission, spoke out against this “offensive statement.” Flores, who has two children currently serving in the military, calls Soulja Boy “Ungrateful” … adding, “He should apologize to ALL armed forces.” “[The rap] is very irresponsible, especially for an entertainer for the youth of our country, and especially with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 coming up.” Seriously, Soulja. Just because you spell your name wrong doesn’t give you license to start bashing actual soldiers who protect your ass daily.
