The Egyptian uprising has not yet ended, and with the military banning labor strikes and workers energized by the spark of revolution not heeding this call and demonstrating for better pay and conditions, we clearly have a long way to go before that country’s affairs are settled. The role of labor in the uprising is unique and fascinating, and deserves more scrutiny. For now, however, let’s spin around… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Firedoglake Discovery Date : 14/02/2011 17:36 Number of articles : 3

‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We’ve Seen So Far

Before the hotly anticipated trailer debuts, we thumb through our first peeks at Magneto, Charles Xavier, Emma Frost and more. By Eric Ditzian Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Murray Close The first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” is only hours away from going live on the film’s Facebook page, giving us our first look at footage from the upcoming superhero flick. It’s been a long time coming, considering that Fox first gave a go-ahead for the script back in 2008. Since then, we’ve gleaned all sorts of insight into the project, from interviews with behind-the-scenes players to production rumors to casting confirmations. And since filming began late last summer, we’ve been gifted with a slew of set photos and official production shots. Before the trailer arrives, let’s review everything we’ve seen so far. First Look at January Jones Our initial peek at “X-Men” came early last September, when photos of the “Mad Men” star — in full, fur-hatted costume as telepathic Emma Frost — popped up online. The aesthetic for the outfit seemed to be retro-futuristic, at once in keeping with the film’s ’60s-era setting and the mutants’ ahead-of-the-human-curve outlook. The photos also indicated — based on the presence of a red-starred jeep and helicopter — that the military will somehow factor into the story line. Meet James McAvoy Weeks later, we got our first look at McAvoy as Charles Xavier . Although taken at night and a little blurry, the photos once again showcased the film’s retro vibe. According to a report from an onlooker on the Oxford, England, set, the scene in question features Xavier “getting doctorates in theology and philosophy from Oxford University in the 1960s, his manipulation of student uprisings using his psychic powers and the way he meets best friend-turned-archrival Magneto.” The Fallen Blackbird By December, the production had shifted Stateside and we got a tantalizing look at Xavier’s Blackbird ship. The aerial shots seemed to indicate the ship had crashed on a beach. The actual location of the shoot was an island off the coast of Georgia, but speculation suggested the in-film setting would be Muir Island, Scotland, where Xavier conducts experiments to better understand the mutant gene. Weeks later, a supposed “X-Men” storyboard indicated that a mutant may be responsible for a Blackbird crash. Look at All Those Mutants! In January, a photo popped up showing a bunch of mutants together, including Jones, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). It turned out the photo was an early leak , and director Matthew Vaughn was not pleased. “When I found out, I said, ‘What the f— is this sh–?’ and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well,” he said. “I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it.” Official photos soon arrived: Kevin Bacon as Hellfire Club baddie Sebastian Shaw, rocking an ascot and talking business with Jones; Fassbender and James McAvoy looking stylish and concerned alongside some of their mutant students; a helmet-clad Fassbender as Magneto ; and McAvoy employing Xavier’s gift of telepathy. Most recently, looks at Magento from behind and the full X-Men logo were published on Wednesday, ahead of the trailer premiere. “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again,” Vaughn said. “It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Mubarak Quits As Head Of Egypt’s Ruling Party

Egypt’s hated President Hosni Mubarak has quit as head of the country’s ruling party. Other leaders, including Mubarak’s son Gamal and secretary-general Safwat el-Sharif, have also resigned in a gesture to anti-government protesters occupying Tahrir Square in Cairo. Thousands of demonstrators have occupied the square for 12 days, vowing to stay until Mubarak steps down as president. Earlier, the military surrounded the square, but soldiers continued to let people join the growing rally. This morning, a gas terminal was blown up in the country’s northern Sinai Peninsula, starting a massive fire that could be seen dozens of miles away.It is believed the attack was part of on-going protests against President Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned the Middle East faces a “perfect storm” of unrest, with the looming risk of even greater instability. In a speech to a Munich security conference, she said: “The region is being battered by a perfect storm of powerful trends. “This is what has driven demonstrators into the streets of Tunis, Cairo, and cities throughout the region. The status quo is simply not sustainable.” No injuries were reported in the explosion, and the blaze was quickly brought under control after the gas flow was shut off. The governor of the region, Abdel Wahab Mabrouk, said he suspected “sabotage”, but provided no details. Anti-government protesters have been demanding Mubarak’s removal from power for the past two weeks. The Sinai Peninsula, home to Bedouin tribesmen, has been the scene of clashes between residents and security forces. Source

DoSomething helps young people develop causes they care about, and the organization said Gaga represented that spirit this year more than any other artist. From calling for an end to the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (which was ) to hosting a “Hands Up for Marriage Equality” event, Gaga focused on helping others. Fellow pop star Alicia Keys was #2 on the “Celebs Gone Good” list. As the founder of Keep A Child Alive, Keys worked harder than ever to provide AIDS treatment worldwide and raised $1.1 million with her Digital Death Campaign , thanks to the help of celebrities such as Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Usher and Justin Timberlake. Coming after Keys on the list was America’s newest sweetheart Taylor Swift, who earned her spot by donating $500,000 to relief efforts after Nashville flooded earlier this year, as well as by joining Scholastic’s READ NOW program to promote literacy. Rounding out the top five were Ashton Kutcher and his hubby, Demi Moore, who launched the DNA Foundation to help stop child sex trafficking and met with world leaders to end slavery worldwide, and Ellen DeGeneres, who teamed up with the Trevor Project to combat bullying and raised more than $150,000 for LGBT people struggling with mental-health issues. Nick Jonas came onto the list at #6 thanks to his becoming the National Chair for “Walk to Cure Diabetes” as well as his portion of the Jonas Brothers’ Change for the Children Foundation . Matt Damon placed #7 for his Water.org organization, while Leonardo DiCaprio was #8 for donating $1 million to the tiger-preservation foundation Save Tigers Now. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry React To ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal

Ellen DeGeneres, Pink and more celebrate historic Senate vote on Twitter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Members of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network join Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV VMAs Photo: Getty Images The armed forces’ controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy will soon be history. On Saturday (December 18), the Senate voted to repeal the 17-year-old measure that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the military. The bill passed by a 65-31 margin, according to CNN , which included eight republicans and one independent who joined the Democrat-backed initiative. President Obama will sign the bill into law next week. “Today, the Senate has taken an historic step toward ending a policy that undermines our national security while violating the very ideals that our brave men and women in uniform risk their lives to defend. By ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love,” the president said in a statement . Calls to dismantle the policy ramped up this year with stars such as Lady Gaga decrying the measure and demonstrations cropping up around the nation. On Wednesday, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who had been crusading to end the policy, tweeted to Gaga after the vote, “We did it! #DADT is a thing of the past.” Gaga, who arrived at the 2010 MTV VMAs with openly gay service members who had been discharged or left the military due to the policy, made viral videos and spoke at a September rally calling for the end of DADT, tweeted about her emotional reaction to the vote. “Can’t hold back the tears+pride. We did it!i Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS,” she wrote . Openly gay talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres tweeted , “Thank you Senators for pushing us one step closer towards full equality.” Katy Perry showed her support for the repeal of DADT by responding to a missive that fellow songstress Pink retweeted. “SUPPORTING ALL OUR TROOPS!” Perry added to Pink’s retweet, “RT @Pink: Congrats 2 US!!! REPEAL of DADT & 17 years of allowing Human Rights Violations. There’s hope after all!” Former army lieutenant and gay-rights activist Dan Choi, who has called for an end to the policy since he was discharged from service after publicly coming out in 2009, also gave his take on the vote. “Thank you, Democrats, for your leadership,” he tweeted . “There: I said it. Also, thank you 8 Republicans. You’re on the right side of history.” MTV News also caught up with student Bridget Todd , who once questioned President Obama about DADT during the commander-in-chief’s “A Conversation with President Obama” forum in October. Although Todd said she was skeptical of the president’s commitment to ending the policy after the Obama administration asked for stay blocking a judge’s ruling that the measure is unconstitutional, she said the Senate vote has restored some of her faith in the U.S. leader. “I think it’s fantastic. I’m over the moon about it,” Todd said. “It’s sort of strange that it’s 2010 and we’re dealing with this so I’m happy that it’s done, I’m happy that it’s gonna be over with. “I think I said that he displayed an alleged commitment to gay equality,” she continued. “I think that this sort of proves that perhaps he is actually committed to these issues. They’re not just sort of political talking points that you use to get elected — that this is something that he is willing to make happen.” What do you think about the Senate voting to repeal DADT?
