Diddy Says Nicki Minaj Is ‘One Of The Great Ones’

‘Nicki is up there. Her story has just begun,’ the mogul says of managing the Young Money MC. By Jayson Rodriguez Diddy Photo: MTV News Diddy is expanding his empire. The mogul recently announced the opening of a management firm that he’ll oversee in addition to his existing business holdings, which include a restaurant, clothing line and, of course, Bad Boy Records. Rick Ross was the first to ink with Diddy , describing the knowledge Diddy has as “priceless.” And now, Nicki Minaj is finalizing the paperwork that will allow the Last Train to Paris superstar to guide her career. The Young Money femcee has already been in the studio with Diddy, and he’s been singing her praises. “Nicki Minaj, she’s definitely one of the great ones,” Diddy told MTV News, speaking publicly for the first time about his new signee. “She has a long way to go, but you know how we recognized LeBron [James] was a great one, Tiger [Woods] was a great one, and Kobe [Bryant] was a great one? Nicki is up there. Her story has just begun.” So far, Nicki Minaj has released only one single, the Sean Garrett-assisted “Massive Attack,” which boasts a Hype Williams-directed video. But she’s been prominently featured on a slew of other artist’s records, including Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad,” Robin Thicke’s “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy” and Mariah Carey’s “Up Out My Face.” In February, the Queens lyricist spoke with MTV News and said she’s in no rush to release her yet-untitled debut. “With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it,” Minaj explained. “With the album, I think it’s more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. “It’s nonexistent in categories. We don’t get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come. Honestly, I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things either. We’ll see.” Do you think Diddy will do a good job of managing artists like Nicki Minaj? Nicki Minaj Is ‘Real Creative,’ Producer Alex Da Kid Says

‘She’s one of the top people I wanted to work with,’ the beatsmith says about the Young Money MC. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj ‘s “Massive Attack” producer Alex Da Kid — who has also worked with Rihanna, Rob Thomas, Jazmine Sullivan and B.o.B — said you can expect more collaborations between him and the Young Money MC. “She wants to be an artist like a Rihanna or a Lady Gaga that translates all over the world,” Kid told MTV News about Minaj’s aspirations. “She’s dope. She’s super creative,” he continued. “She knows what she likes to hear. I’ll put a idea down [and] she’ll be like, ‘I like that idea. I don’t like that idea.’ We’ll just go back and forth. You get in the studio with some artists and they don’t know what they want until they hear it. She understands production. She’s dope. She’s easy to work with. She’s very cool. She’s got this cute thing, but at the same time she’s kinda grimy and ghetto. I really like it. She’s out here. She’s real creative and she’s one of the top people I wanted to work with. I think she’s dope.” Alex said songwriter Sean Garrett presented her with the beat to “Massive Attack” around four months ago and she immediately fell in love with it. Some other artists wanted the beat but both Alex and Sean agreed Nicki would do it justice. ” ‘Massive Attack’ … I’m kinda mobile. I make a living on my laptop,” he explained. “Any time a idea hits me, I put it down. I started that track on the train going to the studio. I don’t generally do that. I always kinda wait, but I had a melody idea. So I started on the train and finished in the studio. I knew it was special from the start. It wasn’t like I was aiming for Nicki with this track; I had a idea I thought was crazy. Nicki heard it and the rest was history. “With all my stuff, I base everything in hip-hop,” he added. “I been listening to hip-hop since I was 2 or 3. I try and broaden everything. I love all types of music and I do everything. I do rock, I do pop. Everything I do is based in hip-hop — that’s the foundation.” Alex produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” single (featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Eminem ) and has some beats for Rihanna, Estelle and Young Jeezy on deck as well. “I was in with Jeezy in Miami. Jeezy is hilarious. I been a fan. I had appreciation of him but he’s so open and so cool —” he’s another one that knows what he likes to hear.” Who would you like to hear Alex Da Kid work with next? Nicki Minaj Explains Why She Skipped XXL’s Freshmen 10

‘With all due respect, we felt like we kinda had graduated from the freshman class,’ MC says of her and Drake’s exclusion from the issue. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj said she told XXL magazine, “No disrespect, but no thanks.” The sexy rapper declined the invitation to be a part of the 2010 Freshmen 10 issue because, like her Young Money compatriot Drake , she felt she should have been down last year. ” Drake and I, we love XXL, ” she told us recently on the set of her video for “Massive Attack.” “We just shot for XXL. With all due respect, we felt like we kinda had graduated from the freshman class. We felt that XXL missed the mark when they didn’t put us on the cover prior to that. They have to pay for that. They can’t say, ‘Hey, get on the next one.’ But we love XXL. That’s like a hip-hop classic. So we said, ‘can we have something just a little bit more catered to us, so that we feel like have still grown as artists, so we’re not at all disrespecting the magazine?’ They were cool with that. “We didn’t dictate, we just asked nicely,” Nicki smiled. “Technically, we were freshmen when they didn’t put us on,” Drake told ImFLashy.com in February. “I feel now it’s just returning the favor.” Earlier this month, the publication revealed their Freshmen 10 . The roster consisted of OJ Da Juiceman, Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Pill, Donnis, Fashawn, J. Cole, Wiz Khalifah, Freddie Gibbs and Big Sean. Related Artists Nicki Minaj Drake

Nicki Minaj Loved Making ‘Up Out My Face’ Video With Mariah Carey

‘I didn’t believe until I was physically in the studio that I was doing with something with Mariah,’ Minaj gushes. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj says she was so surprised that she got a call to work with Mariah Carey on the remix of “Up Out My Face” that she kept the collaboration very hush-hush. “That one, I didn’t believe until I was physically in the studio that I was doing with something with Mariah,” the New York native told MTV News last week. “I didn’t even tell anyone I shot a video with Mariah, because I didn’t even believe. In the back of my mind, I felt like, ‘This video is not gonna come out. There’s no way I’m gonna do a video with Mariah Carey before I even put out my album.’ Then, when it came out, I think it was the #1 video on YouTube in one day, something crazy like that. She’s an icon, I’ve loved her since I was little, like ‘Vision of Love,’ ‘Someday.’ I was one of those little girls in the mirror singing her songs with my mother.” Much like her fellow Mariah Carey collaborator and good friend Gucci Mane , Minaj said the real Mariah was nothing like she imagined. “When I met her, she was so funny and silly,” Nicki recalled. “I thought when I was gonna work with Mariah, [she] was gonna be like this diva. But we were cracking jokes the whole day. She’s a sweet, down-to-earth person.” Nicki and Mimi had their names written on two giant baby doll boxes in the video. In the Nick Cannon-directed clip, the two bust out and have a good time changing outfits and playing with men. The doll angle plays perfectly with Nicki’s “black Barbie” persona. “I think it was dope,” Minaj said about the video. “A lot of times, more famous artists or more confident artists take from a younger artist but they’ll never include you in that. I feel like she liked the whole doll thing and she wanted to do it with me. But she said that: She said, ‘Everybody’s gonna say “she’s doing Nicki.” But I told her, she’s always had a doll persona, like all that ‘doll baby’ [stuff]. So it goes perfect with Barbie and we had fun. That’s all that matters.” The remix will appear on Mariah’s Angels Advocate remix LP, due on March 30. Nicki has been making the rounds with guest appearances recently, from Mariah to Robin Thicke’s “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy,” and of course Lil Wayne’s Rebirth, and she recently shot the video for “My Chick Bad” from Ludacris’ forthcoming Battle of the Sexes LP, which is slated for release early next month. “He sent me the beat. He didn’t have verses on it yet,” Minaj said about working beside Cris. “I told him, ‘You could take what I did to the next level because you’re animated and crazy. People know you for that. I kinda went animated and crazy on that. Luda is definitely one of those people — I love when people don’t take themselves too seriously.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj Mariah Carey
